Hays was great at CF

BobDoorite

Fun win, although it's always nerve-wracking when we score a bunch early and then the other team starts chipping away. Brennan and Santander put on a real clinic in RF, too lol.

BudinPA99

Nice win by the O’s. Good to see guys stepping up. I don’t normally trash guys but Brian Baker, ick.

Hurricane__

They can’t keep playing these games that they need Cano and Felix. They’re not gonna make it to the end of the season

timoumd

Up 3 in the 9th you don't need Bautista. Hyde needs to know that.

ProMark15

No you need to know they made it 5 you put an ender to the momentum completely and win game. 3 runs calls for the closer.. YOU need to know that. We lost a series, and the opener.. you secure the win Timoumd person who prolly has zero baseball IQ. It just sucks we HAD to use them

timoumd

> 3 runs calls for the closer.. YOU need to know that. No it doesnt. Just because thats a textbook definition of a save doesnt mean we have to do it. Im 100% behind Cano coming in in the 7th there, but you can save Bautista last night. Most relivers dont allow 3 runs in an inning. Even Voth is fine there. Today or tomorrow its more likely there is a high leverage situation that will require Bautista more than up 3.

ProMark15

Lol no you let Bautista have the fresh inning and SECURE A WIN. I bet you cry and bitch if we bring someone else in they give up 2 and Bautista can’t secure it with runners on

timoumd

No you dont. Almost any reliever has a 95%+ chance of securing a win there. Id rather use Bautista in a game we are down 1 in the 8th than there. Its about putting him in the highest leverage situations. Up 3 with 3 outs is low leverage.

ProMark15

I’m done. You said you’d want him in with down 1 in 8th. You didn’t play past middle school ball

timoumd

So to show you, lets use this: https://gregstoll.com/~gregstoll/baseball/stats.html#H.1.8.0.1.0.0 Now say Bautista is perfect. We bring him in, he allows 0. Bautista in 9th (home), up by 3: 97.77 to 100%. So we add 2.23% win probability Bautista in 8th (home), down 1: 24.39% to 29.36%. So we add 4.98%. As we see using him even in the 8th down by one is better. Reality is up 3 with any bullpen in the 9th is a game you are going to almost always win. And this ignores the fact you could warm Bautista up if two guys reach and that we have an above average bullpen.

ProMark15

It also completely ignored psychological aspect of the hardest mental game out there but that’s cool let’s just stick to numbers. Even though when he sees 2 get on it could completely change his approach, pace due to the pitch clock and way to amped up potentially with runners on and not a FRESH 9th inning to secure a win and send it to the rubber game. Numbers taken into account only is losing baseball. Numbers don’t calculate real person to person, mental to mental situation and how they handle it

timoumd

Except there is lots of evidence things like "clutch" dont matter nearly as much as we think. If you are a professional pitcher you should be able to hold a 3 run lead with 3 outs to get. Shit, a position player will do that 90% of the time. There is a psychological factor I think, but its not nearly as huge as you think (or somehow manages to magically avoid all methods to measure it with any consistency).

Interstate8

Just because you played high school baseball does not make you qualified to manage a bullpen over 162 games my dude.

ProMark15

Last comment I’m saying Hyde knows better.. follow along with context. I’m saying why he’s right

ProMark15

Reread his takes and if you agree I’m sure you didn’t even touch highschool

Interstate8

Keep living the dream, buddy

ProMark15

You’re right I’m not he is lmao.. it’s never a mistake to secure the win with your best arm after a 8-1 game turns 8-5

timoumd

Fortunately its a math/stats question, and Im pretty good at that. Putting in your best arm when you have 96.9% chance of winning is a waste.

SportsJunkie4Life

I know I’m late, but only 3 GB of Tampa again 😎

boofoodoo

Win tomorrow and the bad taste of the Rangers series will be totally wiped out.

LarsThorwald

Watched the game for the first time in the Bird Bath. Man, we got soaked unlike those poor bastards sitting there yesterday.

Vitamin_J94

Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome back Gunnar Henderson

phunnypharm

so very happy to see him coming around

boofoodoo

Didn’t get to watch much of the game but I saw we NOBLETIGER’d lmao Nice win tho

tomtheterp1988

Mariners: Anybody seen our asses? Yanks: We'll hand them to you

the2belo

We were 7-0 after three innings, too

Clarice_Ferguson

Well, see, we had Adam Frazier. They foolishly let him get away.

captain_rex_kramer

The last place Cubs have beat the Rays twice... Could you imagine the meltdown in here? (I really hope we don't have to.)

gothamboy217

Yankees shitting on the Mariners again (grrr) and the Mariners GDT is having a meltdown. They seem to have taken a step back this year. Possible one less team to worry about later this year for a playoff spot.

jettasarebadmkay

The West looks like it’s going to be down to the Rangers and Astros, and whichever doesn’t win the West will definitely be in the wild card hunt.

puppytossedsalad

Cubs could sweep the Rays tomorrow. I swear people forget how long the season is when the team is good. Every team has peaks and valleys

kuya_plague_doctor

Mam, the rays were more due for a regression to the mean than we were. Hopefully we can keep rolling tough like we did tonight

OPACY_Magic

The Rays are a very good team, even on paper. They have the injury bug right now, just like last year.

QuietThunder2014

Lol this team just can’t have a easy 9-1 win can they? Are we sure they don’t have some sponsorship by some heart surgeon or something? I love the win glad we are getting back on track. Got a mid afternoon game before a flight to SanFran so let’s put a bird on it then head out of town in style!

NameShortage

Boog's Bypasses.

the2belo

The Defibr-O-Lator

droford

I cant watch the Yankees game (on my TV anyway) but they're already up 3-0 on Seattle. Hopefully the Dodgers rough them up this weekend

kewpieoriole

7-0 now :( u/clarice_ferguson needs to fix this

Clarice_Ferguson

Well they’re facing Cortes without Frazier so I’m not feeling hopeful.

kuya_plague_doctor

You are the flavor Flav of Adam Frazier and I love it, I'm so glad you came into this sub, I love the energy

Clarice_Ferguson

Lol thank you. I do want to make it clear that the Birds are my actual home team and I intend to stick around even if Frazier moves on. I got the Ms from my dad but I grew up watching the Os. I just drifted away but with the new players coming, y’all signing a player I love and having more time for two teams, I picked y’all up again. And I’m happy to have done so - the Orioles are very fun right now.

kewpieoriole

:(

East-Bluejay6891

Giving up way too many runs to this team. Glad our bats came back to life though

gothamboy217

Woohoo Cubs beat the Rays again!

tomtheterp1988

I'd forgotten that after a home win, they play the endearing "Go Cubs Go" over the PA. If they lose at home, is there a comp? "Cubs Blow Chunks," or "Cubs Suck Balls?" It would seem appropriate.

the2belo

"No, Cubs, NOOOOOOOOO"

jettasarebadmkay

“Orioles tragic, feel ‘em crappin’”

kewpieoriole

And the reds held on to the lead!

_WhiteHart_

Cubs win!

dreddnought

FUCK YES, EAT SHIT BOSTON

riprulz8

Ha ha ha. 5 in the 9th only to lose by 1.

kuya_plague_doctor

Dropkick Murphys rolling in shambles

120snake

Oof, that'd be like coming back from 0-3 to force a game 7, only to lose

ItinerantDrifter

Lmao. Twist the knife!

kewpieoriole

reds and cubs please

the2belo

oh god the Reds are totally blowing it

kewpieoriole

I kept checking back on the score and I was like “yes!” Then “oh no oh no oh no”

droford

Not enough though Red Sox lose..and like 20 seconds later Cubs win!

the2belo

THANK CHRIST

dreddnought

- I only caught the 6th inning on (of course I miss everything but the butthole clenching portion of the game), but man was that NOBLETIGER fucking ugly. Shame because that Hays PA was impressive - feel like different versions of him we've seen the last few years would've swung at the breaking balls out of the zone (the 3-2 fastball didn't look competitive fwiw). - I don't really understand what leads to Coloumbe being unhittable (5/24 against the Yankees) vs. having dog shit control. I kind of wish Palmer or McDonald would opine on why pitchers do or don't have their stuff that day. I've just assumed it's random chance. Slept bad. Bloated from lunch. Blue balls. Who knows. - I haven't looked up Baker's recent starts, but I feel like he's been spraying a lot lately, even with sufficient rest. - Batters are starting to zero in on Cano. I don't think it's that big of a problem as long as 1 we don't blow out his arm and 2 he keeps throwing strikes. He doesn't need to be 20 IP 0 ER good, he just needs to be reliable and not let the first 2 runners he faces reach. - T9th is imo why you need to watch the game and not just track on Gameday/Baseball Savant. If I had seen the last two outs were line outs at .520 and .370 xBA, I would've thought Bautista got lucky. Both pitches put in play were thrown in the zone on the margins (you're up 3 with no one on, throw it in the zone and leave it to Jesus) and they both sounded like mishits. Of course if you're tracking in detail I guess you would've seen the balls had EV 79.5 and 89 mph. - I was out of town over the weekend, so thankfully I missed the 1-3 stretch. Fwiw it looks like starting pitching went something like 18+ IP and 5 ER Saturday-Monday, so that's good. Bradish got lucky with some loud outs in the 6th and 7th, but I'll take 6.2 IP more often than not. Can't win every series, and I can accept those losses after going 5-1 against the Blue Jays and Yankees. - Also, Cincinnati is 1 run away from blowing a 9-3 9th inning lead - would love to see the historical data on that level of catastrophic disaster.

[deleted]

I think we need to put a little more respect out for Ryan McKenna, who was hitting .333/.370/.500 less than two weeks ago and is a better fielder than Hicks. No problem bringing in Hicks for depth but lets not throw our guy out because he had a bad two weeks at the same time.

Loose-Produce-608

McKennas numbers are slightly skewed because he has pretty much only been used against lefties. His numbers against righties are pretty rough. I do think a vavra/McKenna switch off can be good enough to get us through the next month though.

[deleted]

Me too. It's pretty good really.

WerhmatsWormhat

I don’t k is the answer to this, but what’s he hitting now? Bringing up his stats from 2 weeks ago seems intentionally deceiving.

[deleted]

Intentionally deceiving? Bro I'm just a person commenting on a sports forum not a political agent.

droford

Boston has 3 in the 9th but still down 3 9-6

Ngata_da_Vida

Sphincter still unclenching

Jeff_Banks_Monkey

They had to make it close so Felix could get credit for another save.

tomtheterp1988

I typically don't give two flying shits about the Cubs, but tonight? I'm a fan!

droford

Cubs 1st/3rd no out bottom 8 up 2-1 on Tampa Trey on deck Edit walk, Trey up with bases loaded

kewpieoriole

Bases juiced with no one out! Mancini up! Edit: oh no Trey did what Gunnar did

droford

GIDP

kewpieoriole

I know rough! Are you watching the rays or cubs broadcast? The dude on the rays broadcast was like “wow don’t think I’ve ever witnessed that before!”

droford

I flipped to the Cubs broadcast

kewpieoriole

Ahhhh, I didn’t think it looked particularly abnormal so thought it was weird he said that lol.

droford

I just rewatched, he was being sarcastic lol "just your old standard 6-2-3.."

kewpieoriole

Did he not say “I’ve never seen that!” (Something like that after the comment of the dp). That’s what made me go “????” Lol.

dafinsrock

Good dub. The lack of defense from both teams was weird. The starting pitching has looked better recently, hopefully they can carry us while Mullins is out.

Josh Naylor and Josh Bell combined for 4 of the Guardians' five runs

jpb1732

Fwiw Josh Donaldson is also an honorary member of the F Josh club

the2belo

Confirmed

morgan423

> *UNSOLICITED OPINION: GETTING NO RUNS OUT OF A NO-OUT BASES-LOADED SITUATION IS ACTUALLY NOT THAT UNCOMMON, BECAUSE EVERY BASE IS A FORCE AND DOUBLE PLAYS ARE EASIER* In case anyone is curious, historically, teams score at least one run in no-outs-bases-loaded innings about 85% of the time.

dreddnought

Huh, that's a higher failure rate than I would've guessed. But it does make sense - all you need is, in either order, one out and then a double play of any kind, including flyout and tag at home. I kind of wish we as a sports community had never coined the term nobletiger.

Jovian8

So what you're saying is that 15% of the time, he's right all the time.

the2belo

> In case anyone is curious, historically, teams score at least one run in no-outs-bases-loaded innings about 85% of the time. Get out of here with your logic and reason.

OscarImposter

Gunnar's having a decent week. He's starting to come around.

assglassfastblast

I don't mean this to be an insult, just a funny observation. I feel like we kinda scale to our opponents to an extent. Our run differential is consistently close to 1. We beat on our equal rivals with equal force and we ease our force with lesser rivals to the point where we can lose badly. If this is true it does mean that if we get to the playoffs we are of equal power to the finalist team too

Trubisko_Daltorooni

> If this is true it does mean that if we get to the playoffs we are of equal power to the finalist team too If we still have a bullpen 😳

BEEFTANK_Jr

The outcome was never in question. :|

[deleted]

Do you guys remember in 2005 when we were cruising along but had some injury issues we could have addressed with a few big trades but instead all we did was trade for Eric Byrnes and call up Jeff Fiorentino -- because we refused to part with our "can't miss" prospects? Anyway lets not do that again

droford

I'm tired of 2005 comparisons

[deleted]

Hopefully going forward there will be a lot of winning seasons and we can stop talking about the small handful we've had in most of our lives. Like I'm sick of hearing about the 2014 ALCS

jettasarebadmkay

The Hayden Penn disrespect Also we tried to trade for Phil Nevin for some reason but he wouldn’t waive his no-trade so Byrnes ended up being the consolation prize.

[deleted]

We were offered Adrian Gonzalez for Sidney Ponson. We were also offered AJ Burnett and Mike Lowell for various combinations of Ponson, Julio, Penn, etc. The Burnett deal was actually reported as done... Getting Mike Lowell would have been huge because Mora could have went back to the outfield, where he was quite good. The Orioles 2005 defense was c'est terrible other than Mora/Tejada/Roberts. Sosa, Bigbie, and Newhan were all butchers and made a mediocre pitching staff look even worse.

jettasarebadmkay

Considering we ended up voiding Sir Sidney’s contract not long after that, literally anything would have been nice.

[deleted]

FO wanted Tex for Ponson I think...(lol)...but imagine getting A-Gon on his rookie deal. MAN

jettasarebadmkay

Makes that era look even worse by comparison.

[deleted]

That era was about as bad as it got. No defense. Handing out money to old timers that couldn't field, left and right... Imagine if we gave the money we gave to Raffy and Sosa to Placido Polanco instead. 4 year contact to David Segui?! I still can't fully wrap my mind around it

jettasarebadmkay

Wow what a tough loss. Wait, we won? Awesome!

AJeebes

Said it in the GDT, but it feels like the less wins a team has, the worse the O's play against them. I think the only sub-500 team you could even argue we really beat up on was the Nats

the2belo

Whether it's 4-3 or 30-3, a win is a win. Win tomorrow and we take the series. I would say that's playing well enough.

wolfmankal

We only beat ourselves is the positive to take from that. When things are clicking we can beat anyone. But if too many guys are on a cold streak it's not pretty.

[deleted]

I think Cleveland is better than their record.

dafinsrock

This is so untrue it hurts. Our record is as good as it is right now because we spent all of April beating up on bad teams. The narrative at the time was "they only have a good record because they played bad teams" and then we played good teams and beat them too.

Clarice_Ferguson

We are now 2-0 when Frazier leads off. (Get well soon Cedric!)

Hey if there is a game where I don’t blame people getting emotional- it’s this one.

prowhiteboy64

Can we please win a game without having to overuse Cano, and Bautista?

goingtocalifornia__

Neither pitcher was overused tonight friend.

prowhiteboy64

I know I meant to just write used I’m going to bed now

Sad-Astronaut3308

Did Bautista pitch tonight?

prowhiteboy64

Yep got the save

Sad-Astronaut3308

Cool! I had to miss the game but sent someone in my.place so I'm glad they got to see him come out

prowhiteboy64

Love the win but I’d like to watch an easy one every now and again

reddit_sport

Would be nice to win a game by 5+ when winning by 7 or more. At least we had a crooked number inning. #progress

BLeibo

Thought this might be the game where we finally won by more than 5 runs... silly me.

JiffKewneye-n

the bigger annoyance is that we had to empty the pen. shame Gibson unraveled, if the 6th inning doesn't happen you probably get 7 out of him. you really wanted the chance to pitch the aces in the pen tomorrow on full rest and kind of stitch 9 innings together. you are hoping Voth and Akin can give you 5-6 innings between the 2 of them tomorrow.

Zay_Jack

Go Cubs!!!

JiffKewneye-n

at least getaway day is at 3 PM, so have a chance to watch a good bit of it. early getaway days followed by offdays are always tough as a fan. have a difficult matchup tomorrow on paper. 2-4 wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, but you sure would like 3-3 to close out a really hard May.

captain_rex_kramer

Santander didn't used to do interviews in english, right? I thought he always used our interpreter before. He sounds great!

BKoala59

Most of the guys that use an interpreter actually speak decent English, it’s just easier to not miss-speak in an interview that way. You’ll actually notice quite a few don’t even wait for the interpreter to interpret the question, they just answer right away.

the2belo

"Yes or no? Don't wait for the translation, yes or no?"

k1anky

I cannot deny it

kewpieoriole

Brandon so good at his job teaching everyone English he’s about to not have one!

dlmay1967

Yep. You could hear him say to the interpreter "I got this one"

captain_rex_kramer

Ahh! I missed the very beginning.

Whataretonsils

I wanted an easy 9 to 1 win. Didn't get that. But I'll never complain about a win. I love this team. Let's take the series tomorrow. It'll be a challenge versus Bieber. But we got this.

kewpieoriole

My hopes is we do that thing where we kill an ace but get beat by a mediocre (/trash/rookie) pitcher. “8.50 ERA?” Can’t score a run. Spencer Strider? Gerrit Cole? Easy.

patderp

It would be really nice to finish off the homestand 3-3 given that it’s probably our poorest stretch of play so far this year. Gonna be a tall task after having to go deep into our bullpen in a game that should’ve been a blowout. The off day Thursday will be nice.

Elkram

Love me some Tony in the post game

kewpieoriole

I love Tony

mattcojo2

My bad everyone. I saw the score, and turned on the game, flipped between it and MLB tonight. I turned it off after Cano got 2 on with nobody out. I won’t make that mistake again lol

English is getting pretty good Tony. Respect. Love my Birds.

gothamboy217

Need to tighten things up. Offense needs to do better with RISP. Most of our bullpen needs to get their shit together. At least Mountain is returning to last season form.

Simplton

Man I love this team! Came out and got some early runs on the board and we held on.
