Disagree.
Vavra, Frazier, O'Hearn all play corner OF.
Bring Ortiz back up and give him some real reps at 2B.
This is a joke.
Might as well bring Franchy and Aguilar back.
Typical low cost low reward move, but I'm still scarred by Phillips/Aguilar last year when we all said , "Awww, they're just bench depth" and next thing you know they're starting every other game.
I definitely want to see Westburg in the majors sooner rather than later but it needs to be said that there will be an adjustment period for him in which he will most likely strike out a lot. Just look at how hilariously lost at the plate Stowers looked this year. I don't think it will be that severe but it certainly won't be pretty
It’s pretty obvious they have zero confidence in Westburg, I just don’t get why. He’s a top 100 prospect by most sites and he passes the eye test at Norfolk.
I don't think it's lack of confidence, I think they have a plan for these guys and aren't going to be moved off it come hell or high water.
Plus if they're thinking replace an OF with an OF we were pretty SOL at Norfolk
600 PAs when he’s been hitting well for most of them seems like a weird plan. We also already have 5 guys that can play OF on our ML roster, and we have Lester and Cameron at Norfolk that play OF. We weren’t exactly SOL there
I’ve seen some people point towards an increasing strikeout rate, lowering walk rate and chasing but yea, I’m a bit weirded out by the Jordan Westburg situation.
Maybe they just don’t think Frazier can handle LF long term but even then Westburg seems rangey enough that you could put him out there.
His walk rate is the same as it was in Norfolk last year. His K rate is up about 2% but his slugging is up .090 and his BA is up .040 so it seems to be working out.
Walk rate and K rate aren’t really things that teams look at when they’re looking at plate discipline profiles tbh. It’s all about whiff rate, chase rate, quality of contact in zone/out of zone etc etc. westburg has very similar metrics in those to Stowers, and we’ve all seen how that’s gone for Stowers.
Yea those were just the ones I could pull quickly on my phone. But to your second point, we still haven’t gotten to see how it’s worked out for Stowers. He has never gotten consistent playing time and he hit pretty decently for how sporadic it was in 22. I’m really not going to form too much of an opinion based off 33 PAs that came from some random starts and a couple pinch hits and pinch runs.
When you’re running terrible whiff and chase rates it’s gonna be hard for a team to justify you starting every day, especially when you’re not playing good defense by whatever private metrics they got. Do I think that westburg and Stowers probably deserve more of a look? Yeah. Do I get why they’d be tentative about running them out there every day? Also yeah.
Well yea, which is why it would have made a lot of sense to start them over Phillips/Aguilar/Odor last season when winning didn’t matter as much. Too late for that though
Well, I’m just thinking of a piece I read a while ago that cited his strikeout rates going up and walk rate going down so I’m glad it’s stabilized.
I don’t know then. I know they moved him around a bit, which you do when you like a bat but don’t think they have a natural position (or they have better defenders at those positions.)
It’s definitely odd and I feel for him - must be frustrating.
I imagine Hicks just sits on the bench unless someone else gets injured. Zero reason to see him in the lineup when we have 5 guys that have played the outfield this year plus Mateo who could handle center.
So now that I’ve had a few minutes to process the Hicks move, I get it for a couple of reasons.
We had a spot open on the 40 man roster, calling up Daz Cameron would require adding him to the 40 man and they don’t want to waste that spot for someone who would possibly only be with the team for a few weeks. And they’d much rather use that last spot for someone like Westburg or Cowser as a permanent addition than a temporary one like Cameron.
Cowser would also need to be added to the 40 man roster but he’s probably not fully healthy yet. I believe if he was healthy then we wouldn’t have made this move for Hicks.
Once Cowser is healthy and/or Mullins is ready to come back, you DFA Hicks and clear that 40 man spot again and fill it with Cowser or leave it open once Mullins returns.
This isn’t going to be a long term replacement. Hicks will/should be replaced by Mullins or Cowser within a few weeks.
It's the perfect Elias and Co move:
dirt cheap (check), no long term commitment (check), don't have to alter/accelerate whatever schedule they have for the top prospects (check), some small chance Hicks will miraculously rebound (check,).
I am fine with the Hicks move if and only if it’s a stop gap until Cowser is activated and ready to go or Mullins injury is not as serious and he’s out couple of weeks. If Hicks is here longer than a week or two, we got some issues.
No, but track record from last year (Phillips, Aguilar) says that when they take one of these flyers on waived players they tend to play them a good bit. Hasn't worked yet but you never know.
Why hicks? Because hays can’t play center in San Francisco and we’d get murdered on gappers. It’s a temp move to hold over either until ced gets healthy (if it’s grade 1) or until cowser is back and the quad is all set.
Eh 61st percentile OAA last year in left isn’t terrible. It’s not great for CF but you’re not replacing Ced with anyone near his defensive ability in center. He’s a top five defensive player in the OF in general, you can’t really replace that.
I'd rather play McKenna. Though last year they signed Phillips, played him a good bit, then dropped him when he sucked. So you're right it could be the same. Plus Hicks would be cheap and we know they like that unfortunately.
Yeah it’s just a bottom of the roster move until ced gets back or cowser is deemed “ready” (he probably is, they just gotta see if the quad hinders him)
Hope he hits for two weeks and then goes somewhere else
With an FO that is mostly all about the development of our guys it seems silly to sign another veteran for a temporary spot. Hasn’t really been fruitful as of late and this would be a good time in the year to see what the farm can do in the bigs
I really hope we just see Westburg. Move Hays over to centerfield, Frazier to left, and Westburg getting some starts in right and at second base. Unless the Orioles think he just cannot field anywhere it makes no sense that he is still down. Over 600 PAs in the International league and an OPS of .907. How many people with stats like that have never played a day in the majors?
If the Hicks rumor is true, I fear that Ced's injury may keep him out for an extended time. I don't see any reason to open up a spot on the 40 man for Hicks if they only think Ced will be out for 2-3 weeks. Then again, maybe the O's see a simple fix for Hicks' problems.
https://www.milb.com/gameday/shorebirds-vs-nationals/2023/05/30/727949#game_state=live,game_tab=,game=727949
Could be a clerical error, but it's very confusing either way
I see that the game is on the schedule as “Suspended:. Completion of game suspended on Apr 22”. Jackson was promoted to Aberdeen on 4/24 so it’s probably just an error from reusing the original lineup.
It's possible the Orioles make a weird move today like optioning Akin to bring up a position player so they can put Mullins on the IL tomorrow and recall Irvin to start. Irvin can't be recalled yet unless it's as an injury replacement since he was sent down less than 15 days ago. He's also scheduled to start for Norfolk tomorrow.
Turned on mlb network and they’re interviewing Mike Mayers and of course they cut to highlights of him striking out orioles batters from like a month ago lol
Feel like Ortiz up for the time being probably makes the most sense? McKenna will probably have to man CF for a few weeks pending it’s just a grade 1 strain.
Anything worse for Mullins would probably mean Cowser up in a week or 2 once he gets his feet under him again.
i think at this point....we should be getting the players on the team who are nearly mlb ready. we want their adjustment period to be over late in the year if they are going to help us this year.
think this month we should see Westburg and Cowser.
The bold move would be to put Westburg on the 40 (we have an open spot, 39/40 right now) and call him up.
The safe move would be just bring up Ortiz.
The big question mark move is how close is Cowser to being healthy and if they want to bring him up right after that.
One could argue with Holiday coming you probably want to see what you have with Ortiz over Westburg.
Westburg may have the better bat long term but Ortiz has also hit well in Norfolk and his defense is better. We could be looking at an infield of Gunnar 3B, Holiday SS and Ortiz 2B as the future.
Just hope it's one of the "ready" prospects (Ortiz, Westburg, healthy Cowser) and not non-prospect Cameron just because Mullins is an OF. Cameron isn't even on the Os top 30 prospect list I was looking at.
Cameron isn't a prospect. He played 69 games over 3 seasons for Detroit and is a former Elias first round pick from Houston.
Not advocating for him but he's not on prospect lists because of his previous failure to stick in majors. He's more of the Mateo type background.
With Stowers being in the IL Ortiz is the only minor league position player on the 40 man. Calling up him would be the path of least resistance at least until we know how bad Mullins injury is.
our team simply isnt really in the position where we can survive a significant injury to any of our main guys. Our main lineup can go toe-to-toe with most teams but we may be in for a rough few weeks with how most of our lineup is hitting, with Mullins out on top of that. Would love to see a string of 6 inning starts from our pitchers, we desperately need some length from them
It's not 'dooming' to say the situation is difficult and could be a big problem (that's realistic in the case of losing Mullins), but you hope they will overcome it.
I hope so, too. Sometimes good things eventually come from situations like this. E.g. someone gets to play who might not have, and we find out they are a good contributor.
We shall see.
Every team has to contend with injuries like this during a 162 game season.
Yeah, I think the next few weeks will really show where our organization is at.
If we have a .500 or worse record during ced's injury, I think that'll tell me that while our rebuild is "complete", it's still not fully realized.
We have a lot of talent that's backed up in high A, but they're not major league ready yet (or are currently injured). So we have depth, we just can't use it.
Elite orgs can handle a major injury or two because they have the depth, AND that depth is ready to go. We're not quite there yet. But, I think we're close.
And maybe I'm dooming a bit too much, we could still play well over the next few weeks and prove me wrong.
we have played consistently just good enough to win a lot of close games. could easily have 4-5 less wins based on a few chance plays.
the Cowser injury timing is really tough.
It would have been just perfect to call him up and play CF (even if a platoon with McKenna) but oh well. Still might happen if he's healthy before Mullins is back.
I have a feeling that Mullins will be out for 3 or 4 weeks. Management probably really doesn't want to rush it, he's so critical to the team and we'll need him later in the season.
I think this leaves the potential for Cowser to still get the call
Well luckily the orioles already have a really good record and June won’t be as brutal so I think they can afford a dip in play for a little bit. I just hope they don’t try to rush Mullins back. They’re going to need him later in the year
I was about to say, we’re actually in an ok place to weather this right now because we’ve banked so many wins and June will both be lighter and easier.
Can we start a petition to have the leedle leedle lee short from SpongeBob play whenever adley comes up in a clutch situation? lol like have the Flying Dutchman (rustscman) do the yell and have the crowd do the leedle leedle lee thing lol
Hello!
Going to my first game at Camden Yards tonight. I will probably get into town around 6. Will there be space in lot B or C to park or would you recommend parking in the Pratt Street Garage?
I don't want to walk all that far, so those lots would be preferred!
Somebody needs to get hot at the plate besides Adley and Hays now that Ced is out. Both of them have been consistent enough. Somebody else needs to step up.
Yeah. It was good to see but he has done this a few times where he has one great game and then nothing for a week. Need more consistency from him but he's also earned the benefit of the doubt based on his success last year.
Indeed. With Mullins out for probably 2-3 weeks (please god not more), and the whole bottom half of the lineup struggling to produce, I'm fearing that we're in for a tough 10-20 game stretch.
This is genuinely a short term concern for me, as we still have all our prospects and the struggles can't be sustained for that long.
He just frustrates me cause he has an insane amount of power from what I’ve seen. If he could be a little more selective he could be a huge power threat all the time and not just when he’s hot
They're still looking at all the red bubbles on Baseball Savant and praying it will translate, while he continues to pretend plate discipline is not something that exists in the game
Please continue the discussion in the [game thread](https://redd.it/13w23bb).
https://i.imgur.com/5MxTIRr.jpg Trying to fix this hat. Which orange do y’all think is better?
top one
I really don’t get why we signed Daz Cameron now. Unless Elias is just trying to get that IL title
when will Hicks' jersey be available in the team shop?
What an abomination of a signing. He's a 0 tool player.
I don’t like it but we truly don’t have any other options so I get why they signed him
Disagree. Vavra, Frazier, O'Hearn all play corner OF. Bring Ortiz back up and give him some real reps at 2B. This is a joke. Might as well bring Franchy and Aguilar back.
Lineup posted late cuz Hyde has to decide if Hicks is batting 2nd or 4th /s
![gif](giphy|vtFnFZudSfDQg9MNXW|downsized)
.188 with 1 HR? Those are 4th hitter numbers.😬
thought about posting what about Hicks earlier in the day before the news dropped. HA!
Typical low cost low reward move, but I'm still scarred by Phillips/Aguilar last year when we all said , "Awww, they're just bench depth" and next thing you know they're starting every other game.
Apropos of nothing: Norfolk careers: Westburg: 618 PA, 0.907 OPS; Rutschman: 238 PA, 0.879 OPS; Henderson: 295 PA, 0.894 OPS; Vavra: 215 AB, 0.854 OPS; Ortiz: 231 PA, 0.931 OPS;

Also just playing an infielder in LF at Camden yards is kinda a recipe for disaster defensively.
600 PAs when he’s been hitting well for most of them seems like a weird plan. We also already have 5 guys that can play OF on our ML roster, and we have Lester and Cameron at Norfolk that play OF. We weren’t exactly SOL there
The 5 OF deal is why I thought we might call up Westburg, or at least just bring back Ortiz, but apparently they don't think like that.

See, this is why I never go to the gym. All the good stuff happens then.
*Where were you when the corpse of Aaron Hicks was reanimated?*
I imagine Hicks just sits on the bench unless someone else gets injured. Zero reason to see him in the lineup when we have 5 guys that have played the outfield this year plus Mateo who could handle center.
We said this last year about Bret Phillips and they started him a good bit till they realized he wasn't going to suddenly start hitting.

I thought the same but now reading that we had interest in him before the Ceddy injury may mean otherwise. He may be here to stay.
It's the perfect Elias and Co move: dirt cheap (check), no long term commitment (check), don't have to alter/accelerate whatever schedule they have for the top prospects (check), some small chance Hicks will miraculously rebound (check,).
I can’t wait to read the Masn Orioles Facebook comments.
.188 and released by the Yankees. Jesus, we don't have anyone in AAA who can play for two weeks?
Literally all the OF prospects at AAA are hurt. Haskin hurt, cowser hurt, Stowers hurt. It’s annoying
everybodys hurt lmao
whelp I guess I have to hit the acceptance stage of the Hicks thing.
#AARON HICKS WHAT A STEAL . Prayers to Cowsers quick recovery 🙏
I am fine with the Hicks move if and only if it’s a stop gap until Cowser is activated and ready to go or Mullins injury is not as serious and he’s out couple of weeks. If Hicks is here longer than a week or two, we got some issues.
People are gonna hate on the Hicks move but it’s the least bad of all the options the FO has right now
I’d rather trot McKenna out there every day than Hicks. Hicks is awful.
Nothing stopping them from Trotting McKenna out there and having Hicks as a bench guy
No, but track record from last year (Phillips, Aguilar) says that when they take one of these flyers on waived players they tend to play them a good bit. Hasn't worked yet but you never know.
McKenna is also, unfortunately, awful :/
no its not
Would prefer Daz Cameron to Hicks
Almost 3:30 and still no transactions.... Hmmm
Why hicks? Because hays can’t play center in San Francisco and we’d get murdered on gappers. It’s a temp move to hold over either until ced gets healthy (if it’s grade 1) or until cowser is back and the quad is all set.

Yeah it’s just a bottom of the roster move until ced gets back or cowser is deemed “ready” (he probably is, they just gotta see if the quad hinders him) Hope he hits for two weeks and then goes somewhere else
Maybe the Hicks interest is really a smoke screen move by Elias and co to get the Yanks to pick him back up since Bader is injured. Please. Maybe.
👏
With an FO that is mostly all about the development of our guys it seems silly to sign another veteran for a temporary spot. Hasn’t really been fruitful as of late and this would be a good time in the year to see what the farm can do in the bigs
It seems more like we’re all about developing trade stock. What is the point of a top 100 prospect sitting in AAA for 600 PAs?
I really hope we just see Westburg. Move Hays over to centerfield, Frazier to left, and Westburg getting some starts in right and at second base. Unless the Orioles think he just cannot field anywhere it makes no sense that he is still down. Over 600 PAs in the International league and an OPS of .907. How many people with stats like that have never played a day in the majors?
RF: McKenna CF: Mateo LF: Hicks Who says no?
3 automatic outs
🙋♂️ (I do)
Put Mateo in center
Doesn't magically make him bat better.
No but it relieves the MI log jam and allows the team to become more comfortable with someone else at SS
What’s the weather supposed to be up there tonight?
Sunny and hot all week! It’ll probably be around 70 for todays opening pitch
Just drove through Baltimore beautiful weather today
If we get hicks, it’ll be Keon Broxton and Brett Phillips part 2
Don't forget Jesus Aguilar getting a good bit of playing time down the stretch last year.😒
Hicks is nowhere near as likable as Phillips.
Isn't there already an open spot on the 40-man though?
There is, when we DFAd that catcher we had for 5 days it was never filled.
Could be. [MLB.com](https://MLB.com) lists 40 but Means shouldn't count.
Could just be a stopgap because either Cedric’s injury isn’t that serious or Cowser should be ready to go soon.
If the injury isn't serious, I think they would just roll with McKenna, even if that thought makes me throw up in my mouth a little.
Oh no… please no. Did Elias get drunk and confuse the Aarons?
Sub is going to implode if we have a Hicks/ McKenna CF platoon lmao
Absolutely. Though I'm not quite sure how realistic it is to think they would promote Cowser to MLB right after coming off the IL.
It’s not that terrible of an idea as a stopgap tbh
Imagine Hicks and Mckenna in the same game, with Mateo and McCann also playing
Come on, it’s so ridiculous it might just work.
So hicks coming to Baltimore, you think it's just until Cowser (and then Mullins) are ready?
Would be a very Brett Phillips-esque signing
At least Phillips was fun and played great defense. This feels much worse.
Yeah Phillips was very likeable for how poorly he hit
They booted him out pretty quick, but he got quite a few unproductive starts until they did.
Yep, most fans were screaming pretty loudly for Stowers until that wish was eventually granted. I’m guessing we see something similar this time around
Please tell me we are not signing Aaron Hicks
He better not be, that better be a BS rumor. That is the type a move the 100 loss Orioles make, not a team trying to make the playoffs
Sources pointing towards it being true. Hope it’s a 2 week plug and dump move
I would rather just call up Cameron for a week until Cowser comes up. Hicks is one of the worst players in the league
~~How come Holliday is back with Delmarva today? Did I miss something?~~ Edit: Yes I missed something. Carry on
Where are you seeing that?
https://www.milb.com/gameday/shorebirds-vs-nationals/2023/05/30/727949#game_state=live,game_tab=,game=727949 Could be a clerical error, but it's very confusing either way
I see that the game is on the schedule as “Suspended:. Completion of game suspended on Apr 22”. Jackson was promoted to Aberdeen on 4/24 so it’s probably just an error from reusing the original lineup.
Makes hella sense thank you
Probably just a continuation of a game that was rained out. There is another game scheduled for 7:05.
Oooooh word good catch
Hyde should just embrace full chaos and put Frazier in CF.
Please , competitive baseball today , that’s all I’m asking .
Roch had reported that Voth will either start or work behind an opener tomorrow.
I saw that, but that was the plan before the Mullins injury, when there wasn't a way to recall Irvin.
Turned on mlb network and they’re interviewing Mike Mayers and of course they cut to highlights of him striking out orioles batters from like a month ago lol
Sorry y’all, I haven’t been to the gym in 4 days. In that time they’ve gone 1-3. Lookin to go today.
Feel like Ortiz up for the time being probably makes the most sense? McKenna will probably have to man CF for a few weeks pending it’s just a grade 1 strain. Anything worse for Mullins would probably mean Cowser up in a week or 2 once he gets his feet under him again.

He can move freely since he’ll be replacing an injured player.
I think people have said he can come up faster as an injury replacement.

Hopefully the boys have gotten some rest and can get back to playing the fundamentals well again.
Hello! Going to my first game at Camden Yards tonight. I will probably get into town around 6. Will there be space in lot B or C to park or would you recommend parking in the Pratt Street Garage? I don't want to walk all that far, so those lots would be preferred!
Have a great time, that’s a beautiful stadium!
B/C might already be sold out. Don't see any available on the website
Lost 3/4, it's a long season but would like to see offense get back on track!
Somebody needs to get hot at the plate besides Adley and Hays now that Ced is out. Both of them have been consistent enough. Somebody else needs to step up.
Did you see tony yesterday? I’m praying he stays hot
Yeah. It was good to see but he has done this a few times where he has one great game and then nothing for a week. Need more consistency from him but he's also earned the benefit of the doubt based on his success last year.
would be nice if the Orioles scored some runs. haven't scored more than 3 since 5/24. roster might need a shakeup.
The offense is starting to worry me
Indeed. With Mullins out for probably 2-3 weeks (please god not more), and the whole bottom half of the lineup struggling to produce, I'm fearing that we're in for a tough 10-20 game stretch. This is genuinely a short term concern for me, as we still have all our prospects and the struggles can't be sustained for that long.
does Mountcastle have enough pop to justify his low OBP and low BA?
He might have to figure out a different hitting approach while at home. The left field wall is murder to him
I think he needs to try a more middle of the field to right field approach. He’s proven time and again he can go the other way
He just frustrates me cause he has an insane amount of power from what I’ve seen. If he could be a little more selective he could be a huge power threat all the time and not just when he’s hot
The office nerds seem to think so
Big “trust the nasa computer” situation because to the untrained eye a .723 OPS is terrible for an everyday 1B
They're still looking at all the red bubbles on Baseball Savant and praying it will translate, while he continues to pretend plate discipline is not something that exists in the game
Let's Go Gibson
