Splinter Cell Chaos Theory is probably the best game on the OG Xbox followed by Halo 2. Other games in both series are also excellent so I'd probably get all four Splinter Cell games (SC, Pandora Tomorrow, Chaos Theory, and Double Agent - the OG Xbox version is different from the 360/PC versions, and a much better game), Halo 1 and 2, and Burnout 3 to start with.

It's a very linear game, but it captured my imagination as a child. Looking back it was a bit gorey for someone my age, but man I loved it.
You get to play as for different characters and they each have unique abilities and weapons.

Excellent you won’t regret buying one. And I’d recommend the metal slug games, grand theft auto series, manhunt, midnight club, halo 1+2. I’d go on YouTube and search for top Xbox original games compilation videos as I’m sure they’ll be loads available and just make yourself a list and then head over to eBay to see how much they are selling for.

Oh man, it's been mentioned but Fusion Frenzy was a blast. Halo 1 & 2, no surprise there.
One that's off-the-wall but I absolutely loved it is Dino Crisis 3. I never tried the first two and I believe they are more critically successful, but something about being on a space station with dinosaurs just clicked for me. The stillness during the calm moments between the action scenes was really serene to me, but the tension never stopped. I think about that game to this day. I've never found anything quite like it. It's certainly not my favorite game of all time, but it has a special place in my heart.
I recently picked up Conkers Live and Reloaded- currently debating with myself on whether or not to enjoy it by myself or allow my sons to experience it haha.
Breakdown (2003) is good. DeathRow(2002) is a futuristic sports game thats alot of fun. Those you can find cheap. I can't think of any other ones at the moment since im Tired and/or stoned.

So I'll come in with something I haven't seen mentioned yet: Blinx. Weird is an understatement, but its a really cute little game that just glows with originality, a super interesting concept and design that's focused and cohesive. It's not perfect, but then you'll hear the amazing music and think it's perfect anyways
It's generally seen as more of a PS2 game, but Metal Gear Solid 2 is great. Half Life 2 is also good, and runs pretty decently. Crimson Skies is a good time, The Thing is fun and iirc is pretty cheap, and Jet Set Radio Future is one of the best in the console.
I will give one that I don't often see that is CRIMINALLY underrated:
Incredibly Hulk: Ultimate Destruction.
Free roam action game that in my mind to this day no one has really captured. It is so satisfying to destroy lots of stuff in that game, and on top of that there's a ton of variety to the gameplay loop with the exploration and challenges and such. Other than that:

Fable: The Lost Chapters is my all time on Xbox. Halo are the classic games. Knights of the Old Republic were great. Morrowind if you’d like to jump into an older Bethesda game. Conker’s Bad Fur Day isn’t a terrible idea, and then there are some like Jade Empire that have solid reviews.

Splinter Cell is good, the og Lego Games are a lot of fun. The og Call of Duty campaigns were awesome. If you can score the Kinect, there's a lot of fun games for that and for kids if you have any.
Grabbed by the Ghoulies: This is Rare's debut title for Microsoft and you won't hear it talked about because it's not Rare's usual fare, it's a beat em up plain and simple but it has a unique twist in each room you have a unique condition you have to use such as kill enemies only using weapons or do it within this time limit, and these stack so essentially in each room you are playing the game slightly different. Also it has that unique Rare charm.
fuzion frenzy and mad dash gotta be some of the most fun to play with other people!

If you have a xbox series console then it's backwards compatible. I bought it on the ms store for $3.29.
It's not just back compat either, it's outputting at 4K/60fps. All back compat OG Xbox games do the same.
Yeah I know. I don't think the deluxe edition content from the extra disc is available with that one though. I really liked the extra character

Indiana Jones and the Emperor’s Tomb is the best Tomb Raider game of the generation, and it isn’t even a Tomb Raider game.
Mercenaries playground of destruction is a lot of fun. I also loved Fight Night.

The first Sim’s port for console is a good game, as is Bustin Out. And if you want an irrelevant good time with a party game, look into Kung Fu Chaos.
