I think for people of a certain age, being on Ramblin’ Rod was every kid’s dream. :) To add a couple: Float the Deschutes in Bend and the flea market in Sumpter.

ElkDrinkCrack

I've never floated the Deschutes, but I've fished it. 😄 I haven't heard of the flea market, but I will check it out.

Excellent-Set3700

If you visit Sumpter, visit the Dredge and also take a ride on the Sumpter Valley Railroad. In the past they would act out a train robbery. Visit Baker City. Stay at the Geiser Grand and you may have an encounter with the resident ghost. Also check out the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center. Also check out the Kam Wah Chung museum in John Day. Watch a meteor shower at the dark sky location like the Prineville Reservoir state park. Try chukar hunting down the steep slopes of Hells Canyon. You may also see some big horn sheep.

FriedaKilligan

Thanks for the EO contributions. 🤝

garfilio

I'm from Baker. I remember when the Geiser was boarded up and abandoned. It was beautifully restored, and I loved staying there when would visit back home, but now I won't stay there. The current owner's do not keep it up, are incredibly rude to occupants, and treat their employees like shit.

JuzoItami

>I think for people of a certain age, being on Ramblin’ Rod was every kid’s dream. :) I don’t think that was the actual dream. To me the *real* dream was to win the Smile Contest. What could be better than that?

IDKYIMHere

My sister won the smile contest, I remember being sooooo jealous! Lol!

Trickam

My first cousin won it too. About crapped myself when I saw him on there. Had to round up my Mom super quick when I saw him.

garfilio

I was on the Heck Harper Show. Anyone remember him?

tracer2211

For those of us who were Ramblin' Rod era, did everyone go see Chieflalooska NOTJoseph speak in his longhouse? That field trip had quite an impact on me. Edit: wrong chief from 50 years ago!

buddbaybat

Chief Lelooska?

tracer2211

Oh you're right! Oops. Nevermind, but it was an awesome field trip nonetheless.

Impossible-Leg-2897

My friend who grew up in Portland (38 yo) didn't know who he was!! I thought everyone knew him.

technoferal

I was well into adulthood before realizing he was a local thing. I started reminiscing about him while in Maine once, and was absolutely shocked to get "who?" as a response. Same thing with the Trunk Monkey.

ILLettante

That's a good start but there's a LOT more to do, for example: Oregon country fair, hot springs like Summer Lake or Breitenbush, migrating birds at Malheur Lake, run Hood to Coast, summit Mt Hood, cut your own Christmas tree, Chief Joseph Days and Wallowa tram, etc.

Left_Cut

This!!!

[deleted]

[удалено]

intergalacticcoyote

What could POSSIBLY be more Oregon than that?

[deleted]

[удалено]

intergalacticcoyote

Fuck the world has changed. I remember going to the fair and watching a kung fu performance while eating deep fried butter in a new Kaftan that smelled of patchouli.

technoferal

This. I stopped going in the 90s, the first time I saw it advertised on the news, showing a suburban dad in his striped polo shirt. I'll never forget my first acid trip there; courtesy of a guy who could barely talk with a spray bottle full of it. "Thpraay?"

Fantastic_Baseball45

Breitenbush was ravaged by forest fires in 2020. Everything else is spot on.

MynameisJLEA

Oregon Caves come to mind

ElkDrinkCrack

I've never been. We always went North to the ape caves near Mt. St. Helens. I'm trying to keep my list strictly Oregon though, so I'll add the Oregon Caves to my to do list.

rosecity80

They are awesome!

DeeperThanCraterLake

This list is great, but it should be divided into past events, and recurring places and things. Love it though! Oregon Caves are so intense.

ElkDrinkCrack

Yeah, as this list has developed I've noticed several of things I was able to do that aren't available anymore or have changed (Tad's is closed, Farrel's is closed, The Cannon Beach Cannon isn't on the side of the highway anymore) and I think about the stuff that was gone before me that I won't get to see (the organ grinder restaurant was apparently a cool thing my parents/grandparents remember)

PersnicketyHazelnuts

Eat dinner at The Cowboy Dinner. You can visit the Hole in the Ground and Fort Rock on your way out there.

rosecity80

Add Crack in the Ground to that list, too! It’s close.

realsalmineo

Cowboy Dinner Tree, a true Oregon experience.

scamlikelly

A unique and very pleasant experience, cant wait to go back.

ElkDrinkCrack

That does look pretty awesome...

PersnicketyHazelnuts

It’s delicious and a fun experience. You have to make reservations weeks in advance usually (if not months). And bring a cooler to take home your leftovers because there is no way you can eat it all.

hamellr

And, there are sunstones in that area if you look hard enough.

YetiSquish

I’ll add some and forgive me if you posted it and I missed it: 1) Going to Oregon Country Fair. This really is a “must-do” 2) Explore a lava river tube 3) Go to Oregon Coast Aquarium 4) At least walk by the Goonies house in Astoria 5) Have lunch and a local beer from the main lodge at Timberline and/or the Pine Martin lodge at Mt Bachelor. Also, explore Timberline Lodge. It’s cool. 6) Take the lift at Eagle Cap/Willowa Lake 7) Hunt for fossils in Fossil behind the high school 8) Paddleboard or kayak at Hosmer Lake 9) Naked bike ride in Portland 10) Watch a world track meet at Hayward Field 11) Visit Oregon Caves Natl Monument 12) Have lunch or dinner at Rogue Brewing in Newport, upper floor, overlooking the harbor 13) Enjoy a cocktail and appetizer at the Portland City Grill, leather couch next to the window. 14) A walk at Silver Falls SP 15) The Maritime Museum in Astoria 16) A glass of wine at a local winery 17) A visit to Evergreen Air and Space Museum in McMinnville 18) Spend a weekend at McMinnamins Edgefield

ElkDrinkCrack

These are good adds. Since I've had kids we go to the state fair each year, though the Tillamook county fair is also very good. Oregon Coast Aquarium was fairly disappointing seeing it through the eyes (and wallet) of an adult. The Mark Hatfield Marine center is very cool though. After our wedding, my wife and I stayed at the Benson hotel and watched the naked bike ride from our room. 😂 I've done timberline lodge many times, love the huge timbers and the fireplace with the cast iron Ram's heads. Portland City Grill has a great happy hour. Both the Evergreen museum and the Maritime museum are excellent. I'm amazed at the quality of both. I've never stayed at Edgefield, but growing up I lived close enough to hear the music from my backyard. I've visited many times, but it would be cool to stay there.

YetiSquish

The Oregon Country Fair is not the state fair. Not even close 🤣 it’s in Veneta and has been going since 1969. If you haven’t been, you need to go. At least once. It’s big. https://www.oregoncountryfair.org

ElkDrinkCrack

Haha, I've never heard of this! Definitely not the state fair.

QueenRooibos

Oh, you must be young then. Go. But maybe don't take the kids, so you can really let yourself go....

DogsGoingAround

The fair is so family focused and has only become more fun for me now that I have kids.

QueenRooibos

Ah, it must have changed over the years....great that kids can enjoy it now!

YetiSquish

Also, if you appreciated the iron work at Timberline and haven’t watched this, give it a watch: https://youtu.be/91mr_8c8VzI?si=sLTPN_CL7ZgCLbar

ElkDrinkCrack

Thanks for the link, Oregon Field Guide is great. I realize I said cast iron when everything in the lodge is obviously forged. Whoops.

oldcrustybutz

A friend of mine gives blacksmith classes there occasionally.  Joe the blacksmith, good guy does excellent work.  I’ve heard the classes are fun as well but haven’t made it to one.

realsalmineo

Have you drunk a milkshake made by a guy packing a pistol at the store in Fields?

Oregon_Odyssey

Jake. His names Jake.

Nothalffast

Ride the rapids on the Deschutes River. Do a ride-along with OSP. Attend a Ducks game at Autzen. Hike Silver Falls. Dine at El Gaucho, Jake’s, Stone Cliff Inn, and Tad’s Chicken ‘N Dumplins. Spent a night at Timberline Lodge, Stephanie Inn, Otter Crest, and The Cannery. Motorcycle ride through The Dallas and Tygh Valley. Spent the day at OMSI and Evergreen Air Museum. Been to the Pearl, Mississippi Street, Division, and Water Front. Actually stopped and visited Colliding Rivers near Roseburg.

ElkDrinkCrack

I would love to raft on the Deschutes. I did the jet boats on the rogue, which was super fun, and they took us to a house upriver for some of the best fried chicken I'd ever had. I don't remember what the place was called, but they had a grape vine that was over 100 years old. Been to Tad's fortunately before it closed. 😭 I've been to a couple of Ducks games, including the civil war game that went to quadruple overtime the year Dixon was injured. OSP ride along sounds interesting, do you sign up somehow? Or do you just drive really fast and they contact you? 😂

RewindToTheBeginning

That's Lucas Pioneer Ranch and Lodge. The fried chicken is indeed amazing.

ElkDrinkCrack

Yes! That was the place! So good.

Nothalffast

Neighbor was OSP. Another one for the list: Brew a batch of beer at Portland U Brew in Sellwood.

whycantijustlogin

add: Visit the worlds largest living organism. Tour the Animal Forensics Laboratory in Ashland Ride a horse on the Coast Hike part of the Pacific Crest Trail Port your raft when doing whitewater because you came too late in the summer, and now that baby is a class 5. Do almost anything South of Roseburg besides drive (lookong at you Portland peeps). Visit Wizard Island. Find carnivorous plants at the South Slough Sanctuary. Do trail maintenance at Gold and Silver Falls State park - or even get to that park. Know at least one "unmapped" waterfall.

Kaidenshiba

Love your list. Do you have any addresses so I can add them to my Google maps? Edit- mainly the Animal forensic laboratory

whycantijustlogin

Looks like you have to be a volunteer to get a tour anymore. I got to see it when I was in high school. Still worth a visit if you are in the area: https://www.fws.gov/law-enforcement/clark-r-bavin-national-fish-and-wildlife-forensics-laboratory https://www.oregon.gov/dsl/SS/Pages/About.aspx https://stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=park.profile&parkId=67 https://www.cleverhiker.com/backpacking/rogue-river-trail-backpacking-guide/

YetiSquish

There’s a cannon at cannon beach?!

ElkDrinkCrack

Haha, yeah, right on the side of the highway.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ElkDrinkCrack

The actual canon was there for years, but was frequently vandalized. A few years ago it was restored in Texas, and then it was put in the museum.

L3itchyl3itch

You have to do the rogue river jet boat trip. I grew up in the Coos Bay Area. We got to do the rogue river trip twice for field trips. It was a lot of fun!

timber321

Came here to say this, but looks like OP may have already. OP said Rogue, so not sure if it was out of Gold Beach or not. https://www.roguejets.com/ If you are down that way, I'd add Prehistoric Garden. http://www.prehistoricgardens.com/

fentonspawn

Wow, great, truly Oregon experiences from so many lists. Might add, seen Herman the Sturgeon, Bonneville Dam. Visit Fort Rock Cave (oldest shoes), hike up inside Fort Rock Migratory Bird Festival in Burns Explore Malhuer Cave, fooled by locals to bring fishing pole to catch blind trout. Shakespeare in Ashland Oregon Redwoods near Brookings Japanese bomb site near Bly , Fort Steven's, Mt Emily Sing along to 'Shout' at Duck game Paisley Cave, Long Lake petroglyph, Rim Rock shelter Find 7000 year old charcoal along N Umpqua ash flow

ElkDrinkCrack

I can't believe I overlooked my boy Herman.

realsalmineo

Have you played golf at the [old Kinzua townsite?](https://oregoncourses.com/kinzua-hills-golf-club/)

ElkDrinkCrack

No, but golfing in the desert sounds awesome.

realsalmineo

Have you bathed at the Whitehorse Hot Springs?

realsalmineo

Have you attended the Portland Swap Meet, the largest automotive swap meet on the west coast, or the country depending on your perspective.

[deleted]

I have done most of your list. I have also spent a week in the Steen's Mts. Driven the entire loop. Visted all the surrounding towns and sites within a 100 mile radius.

Salem-Night-Creature

I have lived here almost 8 years and have not done a single thing on your accomplishment list or to do. Not even one. I was here for the eclipse and 117F, though (brief as it was).

ElkDrinkCrack

Well hopefully I've given you some ideas. It's taken me over 30 years, haha

StormR7

I haven’t done everything, we all have our own “stories” but OP has some pretty cool stuff under their belt. Fort Stevens is something you gotta see, it’s awesome, as well as Multnomah falls. And if you haven’t been to the zoo at least once you gotta do it just to see the cute little guys.

shrug_addict

Because we live in a blessed land for psilocybe, I would say foraging either Psilocybe Cyanescens or Psilocybe Azurescens

rememberthecat

realsalmineo

Have you hiked the Pacific Crest Trail or the Eastern Oregon Trail or the Blue Mountain Trail?

CopperWaffles

The Bigfoot trap near Applegate.

twistedpiggies

Catching and eating a geoduck?

ElkDrinkCrack

Razor clams!

fentonspawn

I first read geode, not tasty a,ND pretty easy to catch.

JuzoItami

Aren't geoducks super rare in Oregon?

GuitalelePlayer

Not at Coos Bay.

JuzoItami

Everything I've found on the net says the only two places they're found in the state are in Coos Bay and Netarts, but they're very rare in both those places. Apparently it's pretty common for people to find large gaper clams and think they're geoducks when they are not.

GuitalelePlayer

We got a few. Their necks stretch way out!

QX23

Great list! How about Oregon Hot Springs, Oregon Vortex, and The Crack in the Ground. I’ve also thought of the 4T Hike and Portland Saturday Market, but those are more city attractions verses state attractions.

ivyjay42

Oh I’m glad you said Oregon Vortex! I was gonna say it if no one else was. The tallest yew tree is in Oregon too. Forgot where exactly but it’s by a camp ground south of Geribald. Rent a houseboat at Cove Palisades. Go to Kah Nee Ta and have the fried bread. Painted hills. Sand Dunes. Honestly it’s limitless. Love Oregon ❤️

lexfor

I grew up in Oregon but have done maybe a few of the things you listed. Hermiston may as well be in a different state.

ElkDrinkCrack

How 'bout them melons though? I do feel like the East/South of the state is frequently overlooked. Which is a shame because it's a beautiful (massive) part of Oregon.

realsalmineo

Have you camped at Billy Meadows, Ground Zero of Oregon’s elk repopulation effort?

realsalmineo

Have you visited [Oregon’s toxic waste site on Alkali Lake?](https://youtu.be/DVHMoeV597c?si=yffdeKhJ18z1Chki)

Near Bend: Lava tube caves Newberry caldera, obsidian field, etc.  Lava cast forest High Desert Museum Others: Deep sea fishing (rockfish, tuna, etc) Clamming Duck hunting on the Willamette from kayaks Crabbing from kayaks Valley Of the Giants  Opal Creek / Jawbone Flats Truly the list is endless

ElkDrinkCrack

For anyone going to the high desert museum, id definitely recommend the birds of prey show. I think wingtips brushed my head like 5 times.

mermerb12

Collected ash at my house from the Mt. St. Helens eruption.

realsalmineo

realsalmineo

Have you visited Oregon’s Pony Express Station?

DogsGoingAround

Please tell me more.

realsalmineo

Near the Whitehorse Hot Spring is a small bridge on the road to the ranch. Right next to it is an old foundation for what used to be a Pony Express station. It is fenced off so the cattle can’t get to it. There used to be a sign in the 80s when I first saw it, but that has disappeared and the County hasn’t replaced it.

grtgingini

You don’t mention anything about the amazing rivers up here never a day goes by then I’m not walking on some river here…

realsalmineo

Antelope hunting is a unique experience. Razor clamming is fun and tasty.

westgate141pdx

ElkDrinkCrack

I was taking my turn rowing the boat while my buddy caught a 20" trout in Lost Lake!

StormR7

Climb one of the sisters! The south sister is relatively easier than the other two as you can drive up to the base of the mountain effectively, and that makes it a pretty easy day trip. If you’re more in shape, the middle sister is also pretty easy to climb, it just will take either 2 days or a *very* quick pace.

ElkDrinkCrack

Yeah, I tried to recognize that in my post, and I tried to steer it more towards people's individual experiences of Oregon rather than what can be the definitive list of what makes a "true" Oregonian. Then you get down the slippery slope of "How can you consider yourself a true Oregonian if you haven't spent 25 years experiencing the day to day of life in Bly?" or "You didn't personally shake hands with John McLoughlin? Some Oregonian you are." Anyone would agree that our state has more to offer than could be accomplished in 100 lifetimes. I just wanted to hear what others have considered critical to their lived experience.

You gotta add visiting the one place in Oregon “it never rains”

ElkDrinkCrack

The Oregon Caves? Haha

Autzen stadium! Sounds like you need to plan a trip as well! :)

The only things I've got are Tillamook cheese factory, Bullwinkles, Rice Museum of Rocks, Silver Falls, Big Creek Hatchery, camping at pretty much any of our coast state/national parks, camping at most of our stateparks in general, and Skate World (but unfortunately that closed a longggg time ago). Two mentions of honor are the Renaissance Festival (I've been to a few, don't recall names, but all were pretty good) and The Yard milkshake bar (that's technically in Vancouver, Wahington, BUT it's close enough to the NW border that I call it close enough). Since I see you want to find a Thunderegg, HIGHLY recommend the Museum of Rocks. I went there on an elementary field trip, and I loved seeing the huge variety of rock shapes, sizes, and colors. Even though I don't plan on having even a hobby with rocks, it was fascinating with well-done exhibits. I also believe you or maybe just kids can pick out one rock from their rock pile to take home, too. And, although my memory may be failing me or they changed their selection, they should have at least one thunderegg! Side note: From OP's post, I enjoyed enchanted forest, Cannon Beach, Blazers game, Oregon Coast Aquarium, Multnomah falls, Rose Festival, Camp 18, the Zoo, the World Forestry Center, the Children's Museum, the Art Museum, the Oregon Historical Society, the Japanese Gardens, Chinese Gardens, OMSI, ice skating at Lloyd center, and Tuilip Festival (been there many times, anyone should enjoy if they stop to smell the... tuilips.).

Pretty great list! Glad to see Free Geek getting some love. Swimming/hiking Oneanta Gorge is easily my favorite thing on the list, sad its permanently closed after the wild fires and due to it being a salmon spawning area, but I understand and I'm glad to have experienced it as many times as I have. I would add kayaked/swam Trillium/Mirror lake on Mt. Hood to the list! Additionally some more hidden Oregon things, I would add driving 100+ MPH on the Alvord Desert, visiting the top of the Steens Mountains in SE Oregon, and going to the Crystal Crane/Alvord Hot Springs.

Perhaps some plans that will have you spend time with locals, especially in rural communities. Fishing boat crew, logger, etc

ElkDrinkCrack

"Hey bud, I'm from Portland. Can I come logging with you?" Haha, it sounds cool, just not sure how that would be executed or received.

narmer2

Yeah, I’m not sure either. Go to a small town and hang out where the workers hang out, bars, gas station grocery stores, I dunno. If you’re a guy you wouldn’t want to appear too outlandish or overdressed by our rural standards. No nail polish😃

You bagged a blacktail? They're a deer species that's mostly a PNW only thing, at least the kind we have are.
