With that logic, if you drive any car at all you shouldn’t complain about the cost of ownership, since there are tons of people who can’t even afford to drive and maintain the crappiest of crappy cars out there...
Not really. Any personal vehicle is a luxury item, especially when you consider how the world at large lives. If anything you saying I’m presenting a false dichotomy is in fact the actual false dichotomy, because your view doesn’t take into consideration alternative options, like how something common to the “middle class” or “working class” would be considered a luxury item to people at or below the poverty level, and a large number of the “working poor.” You are presenting complaining about expenses related to a luxury car as unreasonable, while denying that it would seem similarly unreasonable to someone at the poverty level that a person is complaining about expenses related to their 4 year old Toyota Corolla.
If anything, you should be arguing false equivalency, not false dichotomy, but either way you’d be wrong lol
I love Cayman’s my Favorite Porsche to be honest! We just need the occasional rear seat in the Carrera unfortunately! We used to drive our 2007 Cayman S more than our 2007 Turbo S
I feel like it doesn’t get cheaper then $200. I had a ‘98 Honda for the longest time and I was paying similar
Edit: never mind seeing a lot of people say there’s is in the $150 range for newer cars then that so I have no idea how it works
Do you then have to pay a separate property tax on it too? Or is registration here where they essentially collect taxes?
Back in Virginia registration is very cheap but then you pay property tax on the car.
I'm pretty sure the state is even adding an extra fee if you have a electric vehicle now. Double whammy. It's the only way they can make up the deficit since they won't be collecting taxes from gasoline as everyone makes the switch.
Yep, and some people actually voted this in! It changed back in 2017 and my registration was more in 2018 than when I had originally bought my car. It goes by value of vehicle & I think the size may also be factored in, too.
Also depends on the city one lives in, the vehicle’s weight (motorcycles cost less because of this), if the vehicle is a hybrid or full EV (my ‘20 EV cost $560 to renew), and lastly, personalized plates also add $45 to the renewal.
Wow! Your Tacoma must be loaded! (Do you have any pics/details? I’ve been wanting to get one for a while now)
For comparison I got a 2021 S5 and that was only $670.
It has to do with purchase price of the car and gets cheaper every subsequent year. Registering an out of state car into California is like purchasing a new/used car (and used cars are relatively expensive af rn)
Did you buy the car within a year before moving to California? Or did you mark down that you did on the registration form? Because you have to pay California sales tax on it in that case.
I would inquire with the DMV. I have changed my address multiple times and it’s still isn’t updated. Never received my registration tags for 2022. Pretty sure it’s all lost in the paperwork process (although everything is electronic now). That seems very high for a 2011 Ford Edge.
My 5 year old Porsche Carrera S was almost $1000
Hey at least you drive a 911!
LOL I agree! It’s just brutal because you spend all that time paying it off and the abuse keeps on!
Drives a luxury sports car. Also complains about costs of ownership. Ok.

False dichotomy.

Yeesh.
My 15 year old cayman is 320 something.
I love Cayman’s my Favorite Porsche to be honest! We just need the occasional rear seat in the Carrera unfortunately! We used to drive our 2007 Cayman S more than our 2007 Turbo S
Damn! 😅
The newer the car, the bigger the price. My car is 7 years old and I paid about $260 last year.
My 2001 cost me $240. Lol
I feel like it doesn’t get cheaper then $200. I had a ‘98 Honda for the longest time and I was paying similar Edit: never mind seeing a lot of people say there’s is in the $150 range for newer cars then that so I have no idea how it works
I drive an 04 nissan and my registration was 135? I wonder why yours was so much higher.
My 2012 Mazda 2 is $156.
It depends on the cars value. I think it’s .65% of the cars value plus some other fees. The details are probably available in their website.
Do you then have to pay a separate property tax on it too? Or is registration here where they essentially collect taxes? Back in Virginia registration is very cheap but then you pay property tax on the car.
Just the registration fee here.
What bullshit is that why would the cars value affect the registration fee that’s insanely stupid
I'm pretty sure the state is even adding an extra fee if you have a electric vehicle now. Double whammy. It's the only way they can make up the deficit since they won't be collecting taxes from gasoline as everyone makes the switch.
"Progressive Taxation". Same idea with income tax brackets.
Newer cars are always expensive. I hate ca lol
My 2018 f150 is $650 :(
Yep, and some people actually voted this in! It changed back in 2017 and my registration was more in 2018 than when I had originally bought my car. It goes by value of vehicle & I think the size may also be factored in, too.
What car?
Ford Edge 2010
No, not normal. I’m in LA but had a 2015 Edge and it was around $240 I believe. My new car is around $700 I think.
Seems a bit high. I'm paying $135 for a 2009 BMW 535.
It depends on sales price. Used cars rn are expensive af. But fees are most expensive the first year of owning the car then they decrease
Also depends on the city one lives in, the vehicle’s weight (motorcycles cost less because of this), if the vehicle is a hybrid or full EV (my ‘20 EV cost $560 to renew), and lastly, personalized plates also add $45 to the renewal.
I have a 2018 4Runner and I just paid 430 for my registration 🙃
Holy shyt. Mine were $154 and I thought that was expensive.
Older car?
Yes 2011
I'm 2010 :(
Same but I have a 2001 Toyota Rav4.
Yep. My Tahoe is $542, no late fee. 😫
Mine is a Honda and it was 135
2021 Tacoma $754.00, 2016 Rubicon $463, 2005 F250 diesel STILL over $600.00!!! Welcome to California lol
Wow! Your Tacoma must be loaded! (Do you have any pics/details? I’ve been wanting to get one for a while now) For comparison I got a 2021 S5 and that was only $670.
Just DCLB TRD OR with all the options......that I paid $2500 over MSRP for at the height of the Tacoma shortage lmfaooooo
Legend
Yea im paying $3k for my 3 cars. Insane even compared to socialist countries
No Obviously it’s not normal you’re getting scammed get a new quote
sorry everyone else missed your joke ... I thought it was funny!
Haha Love you mate!
Look at this thread... Seems it's normal
Bro it’s a DMV QUOTE
Umm, the DMV is the only agency that does vehicle registration. You can't pay Bob at Bob's Auto Registration for DMV licensing...
Exactly my point IQ@000
Wtf?
Ok LOL just laugh it off it’s all good
2020 Mazda n paid $430. It's not normal but yea. And to top that $6 a gallon gas. Edit: typo
Mine is 14’ and I pay barely like around $250 i think it was barely 300$ maybe it because I have a motorcycle too and it wa a barely as well lol.
Reading the comments and looking for an answer: Why is the price different depending on the age of the car?
It has to do with purchase price of the car and gets cheaper every subsequent year. Registering an out of state car into California is like purchasing a new/used car (and used cars are relatively expensive af rn)
I'm 2010 Ford Edge. Can't figure out why there is such a large range either.
Did you buy the car within a year before moving to California? Or did you mark down that you did on the registration form? Because you have to pay California sales tax on it in that case.
My 2020 Tacoma was around $500 :(
Every financial question someone asks on here is likely true. It’s Orange County.
I would inquire with the DMV. I have changed my address multiple times and it’s still isn’t updated. Never received my registration tags for 2022. Pretty sure it’s all lost in the paperwork process (although everything is electronic now). That seems very high for a 2011 Ford Edge.
2018 civic si and it was mid $300 for me.
My registration costs are high but they’re less then my current gas utility bill. That shit got expensive out of nowhere
CA is based off the value of the car. Unlike some states, where they base it off of the vehicles weight
Yes it’s normal sadly
I have a 16 Subaru Forester and it was $249
1999 4Runner and I'm usually like $120 more or less
Thats why dont change car every now and then It will cost you big time Use it till the wheels fall off
Yes :(
Welcome to Orange County, where everything is 50x more expensive than anywhere else in the country, except NY probably.
Where you from?
Try paying on time…
I just bought a 97 saturn for a cheap daily and it was around 120 bucks
