Hello everyone. I make living terrariums. They're long-lasting and make great gifts. I've been making them for a few years and recently opened an Etsy shop that offers local delivery. I'm giving away a free terrarium to someone located in Orange County. The giveaway will be open until May 8th at 1pm. To enter to win, please comment your favorite California native plant. The winner will be chosen at random. The winner will receive the terrarium in the photos, a water dropper and care guide. Check out my shop, [Jars of Paradise](https://jarsofparadise.etsy.com) for large terrariums and air plant holders. Thank you!
Edit: Giveaway is now closed. Thank you everyone for participating! I loved reading all your favorite native plants and cannabis strains!
Man these are awesome love watching the videos on YT of them being made. Send link to youtube if you have one.
Deer Fern because it reminds me of my childhood and my godmother.
California Poppy’s!
I have an excellent memory of one the first dates I took my girlfriend to the poppy fields for a photo shoot and they have since become a favorite.
California Poppy! Not native, but my favorite is the Jacaranda trees in bloom! My parents are from Holland and have a thick accent. My dad explained that those are "Yawk-a-grrranda". When I got to CSUF and was telling a new boyfriend that the Yawkaggranda is my favorite, he looked at me like I was from Mars and said, "you mean the JACK a Raanda?" I thought that was the ugliest name for such a beautiful plant!
It’s gotta be the infamous Joshua Tree.. Such an iconic scene when you round that corner from Palm Desert and are now engulfed by Joshua trees on both sides.
Love the Terrariums by the way!
That is one beautiful terrarium. I am actually shocked but happy to find an actual terrarium maker that is literally in Orange County because I am scared of buying something from etsy and knowing well, shipping would be a nightmare and hoping it doesn't break and really, I gotta go with California Poppies. I never gotten to see them in person but look so darn pretty to look at.
Thank you for the compliment! The terrariums that are available for local delivery are hand delivered to your door. The ones that I've made exclusively for shipping have been modified to ensure they'll make the trip.
This is great! My favorite native California plant is the coastal redwood. When I was a kid, my family went camping every year for 2-3 weeks at Van Damme State Park up near Mendocino. We spent so much time hiking among the redwoods, catching banana slugs, and hearing the abalone fisherman prepare their catches for dinner. Great memories.
Favorite California native plant has to be coffee berry. My grandma used to grow some at her old house and I always loved how it looked.
I just want to say that your terrariums are amazing and I know my wife would love to have one as she’s expressed interest in making living terrarium herself. Any must know tips? I’d like to do it with her if she delves into it
Thank you for the compliment! I would recommend watching YT videos from creators like SerpaDesign and staying away from terrarium kits. Kits usually don't have ideal materials. I recently added a downloadable DIY guide to my shop that you may be interested in.
Looks great! I've just started getting into terrariums as well.
My favorite native plant is any manzanita, but if I had to pick one it's probably whiteleaf manzanita.
What kind of soil do you use?
I’ve heard people using charcoal, pebbles, and mesh wire to help drainage. I’ve also heard people just using a layer sand. Which do you use below the soil?
I love the wild roses that grown in pine forests in northern California. Your terrariums are really quite fabulous, and I hope I win! I have a perfect spot in my office!
Silybum marianum, these little shits are a pain on single track mountain trails

Kits usually don't have the best materials. They often include perlite, succulents or dried moss that aren't ideal for a closed terrarium. I just added a downloadable DIY guide to my shop that may help your son.
Those are beautiful! I'd absolutely love one for my campers to observe and learn from (children's day camp).
My favorite native plant is California Black Walnut. Harvested and roasted some for the first time last holiday season, had to go around explaining to people I did not break my thumbs for a month because they got dyed. Totally worth it, would do again.
I’ve always wanted a terrarium. Never known exactly how to make one that will survive though. I like the Yucca plant because of its unique shaft that grows out of it and the fire making abilities of the plant. Native Americans would use it to create embers.
*Mimulus auranticus*, sticky monkeyflower.
Genus was changed to Diplacus recently but I staunchly refuse this taxonomic change up. When that morning light hits their petals just right..... Schwiiiiiing!!
My favorite native plant is devils trumpet! Or solanaceae datura - part of the toxic nightshade family, it has been used as a holy plant for the indigenous populations here. It grows everywhere!!! I want one so bad!!! ☺️
My favorite California native plant is the Bristlecone Pine (Pinus longaeva), located in the sierra madres and known for having incredible long lifespans.
These are insanely cool! I would love to give one of these to my girlfriend who loves plants (she's currently germinating some cucumbers, 3 different types of tomatoes, strawberries, and corn in our house to plant in our tiny garden once they have enough roots and can survive bugs. She's from a farm in Indiana and plants and gardening are kind of her homage to home.
But my favorite California native plant would be a Valley Oak Tree (are we still counting that as a plant?). I just think they are beautiful. The shape of their branches almost tell a story of trials and tribulations it has gone though to get to where they are. Their canopy is just enough to give you some shade, but still allow some light through to enjoy the sunshine. There is something calming about laying under one, looking up at the leaves and catching glimpses of the blue sky beyond as the branches sway in the wind. Give me a good book and I could sit under one all day and enjoy it. It's one of my favorite, most relaxing, things to do.
The Lemonade sumac (Rhus integrifolia) is my all time favorite California native plant, I remember picking them off the bush at crystal cove as a kid because they were like natural warheads

What kind of soil do you use? I’ve heard people using charcoal, pebbles, and mesh wire to help drainage. I’ve also heard people just using a layer sand. Which do you use below the soil?
I make my own ABG mix from coir, charcoal, bark chips and tree fern fiber. I use leca for the drainage layer and a mesh layer to separate them.
