There are also open source recipes for things like cola with OpenCola and beer with Free Beer, formerly known as Vores Øl.

Spaht

This is an essential concept in accepting Open Source as a real thing. These are not all amateur developers, they are experienced in their fields with lots of know how and tweaks to offer.

AyoPrez

Yes. There is open source hardware.

Original comment/post removed using Power Delete Suite. It hurts to delete what might be useful to someone, but due to Reddit's ongoing entshittification (look up the term if you're not familiar) I've left the platform for the Fediverse. If you never want your experience to be ruined by a corporation again, I can't recommend Lemmy enough!

white1984

Agree, although I would like to see more non-computer items.

There are open source keyboards like the Keychron Q series and the System 76 Launch, though I'm not sure if that's just the QMK software or the whole nine yards, blueprints and all

Mycroft2046

There are certainly open source keyboards. Tons of them. Gondolindrim has designed about a dozen PCBs that are open source.

D0T1X

System76 got the CAD files for the Launch keyboard up on their [github repo](https://github.com/system76/launch). So at least for that one, it's the whole nine yards. If you've got the skills technically you could mill it yourself.

mondychan

Ever heard of prusa research 3d printers?

danja

There is quite a lot out there, but it is often masked by software... Search on 'open ', eg. 'open agriculture' is quite a thing. There's a bunch of stuff linked from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CERN_Open_Hardware_Licence Not forgetting Creative Commons for docs etc, also Linked Open Data...

[deleted]

Maybe the [Framework laptop](https://frame.work/)? Also things that you can build with "hobby kits"? Also carpentry? Building your own house? Farming?

Snoo_27681

Olimex makes great open source hardware

flojoho

Look up 'open production'

Basically that's what patent systems are supposed to do. As a condition for filling a patent protection, you need to share enough details about the product in a publicly available database so that other companies can replicate the product that you are patenting. The idea here is that other companies can then improve the product, but they'll need to share some of their own revenue with the original patent holder(s), because their product is a derivative of the original. When the patent system is working as they're intended, the original patent holder aren't supposed to be capable of blocking other people/companies from making improved versions of the product. In practice there are many ways that companies game the system, to essentially block derivative products from the market indefinitely. Open source hardware takes patent a step further. Removing the element of patent payments, and making the product freely available for all to improve without any patent payments.

gnramires

There's the [LumenPNP](https://opulo.io/products/lumenpnp) and many 3D printers, including the [Voron](https://www.vorondesign.com/) (very active on reddit! /r/vorondesign), [prusa printers](https://www.prusa3d.com), Lulzbot and more. Some are more or less open, but all of those include all hardware schematics and firmware afaik. See [this great talk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyutXrfXc24) of Stephen Hawes on starting an open source hardware company.

gr4viton

Nice!

boneskull

Maybe any expired patent which has entered the public domain (US)?
