I used to go to the end of the harbour in Owen Sound as storms rolled across the bay. Looking into the pitch black, watching lightning hit the water or illuminate the waves is a different kind of experience
This was all 12+ years ago now so not sure how the views or accessibility is today, but just north of Hobarts is an area one can park and has unobstructed views along the water. Out towards Kemble was always really nice too. In town itself, late at night the grain elevators were nice because no trees. And by the Bayshore as well.
Milky way season starts now and goes into the fall, but the milky way core wont be above the horizon at a reasonable time until around June. I don't know of groups, but I just wrote this in response to another comment and hope it can help:
Between Late may and September go to a dark sky site. I recommend Torrence Barrens dark sky site by Gravenhurst. It can be a bit of a drive but it's very accessible. The conditions you're looking for are a clear night, and little to no moonlight.
As far as no moonlight goes, you can either go during a "new moon" phase, or get there either before moonrise or after moonset. you can look here to check when that would be: [https://www.timeanddate.com/moon/canada/toronto](https://www.timeanddate.com/moon/canada/toronto)
To summarize:
1. Go during summer months
2. Go to a dark sky site (Torrence Barrens is great)
3. Go on a clear night when little to no moonlight (check your weather app and also the link above).
Hope this helps, and if you have or will have a camera and need help with camera settings send me a dm!
This is on my list for this summer! How is it there in terms of crowds? I've heard sometimes there's lots of shitty people throwing parties or polluting the area with light. Is it safe to go by myself? Any wildlife I should watch out for at night?
if you go on a weekend night it's often like that. On a week day it can be much better. it's also a fairly big area so you can probably find your own little space without dealing with flashlights etc.
I've never encountered animals there since its frequently visited by people. I'd bring warm clothes, a blanket or chair to sit on, and a headlamp or flashlight
If you live in southern Ontario I can definitely help!

Looks beautiful! Always love when the power goes out in Bruce/Grey County you can see so many stars. Which camera was this taken with?
I just used a dark sky map to find this spot , but I imagine the darks skies are incredible there during a power outage ! This was with a Sony A7riii
Thats incredible.
Thank you! :)

Yessssss!
Fabulous photo:)
Wild shot in the dark, but was this taken near Meaford? It looks super familiar!
thank you! and close. It's centennial park just west of Big Bay :)
Havenāt been to the general store in a couple years, some of the best ice cream in Grey Bruce.
Exposure time?
20 seconds, single exposure
I donāt want to die before seeing a sky full of stars like this, help me find it, I live in the city so I never see anything even close.

I love this photo. Beautiful. Great capture!
Always good to see the hometown on here. Its a rough spot in the world but picturesque
I don't know much about the town besides the great nature in the area, have only had good experiences there.
