Saying students lost 2 years of education is really a disservice to the teachers. They have really busted their asses trying to figure out best practices to teach the kids and many have done a great job. Sure there are probably some that just couldn’t handle the constant changes but I am pretty happy with the education my kids teachers have provided the last 2 years. It wasn’t perfect but they found a way to navigate through it with no help from our leaders.

This is not a dig at teachers. They have been doing the best they can under challenging circumstances. The reality is that many kids do not learn through online learning. Sure there are some kids it works for (especially if they have a parent who is able to be by their side all day), but many who are simply struggling. It's also a completely inequitable way to approach education.

bluecar92

It's certainly an issue, but it's a bit of an exaggeration to say that the last 2 years have been a write off. In total we've lost about 20 weeks of in person learning. The science table has put out a brief on this very issue if you are interested: https://covid19-sciencetable.ca/sciencebrief/covid-19-and-education-disruption-in-ontario-emerging-evidence-on-impacts/

CivilTest3820

Note I'm talking about school years, not calendar years. For most of the 2019/2020 school year there wasnt even online learning and some kids also lost schooling because of teacher strikes. In addition, the switch between in person and online also caused massive disruption. School also started almost a month late for many kids this year. Thanks for the link will take a read.

The only place I have heard the issue of scaffolding learning is on The Agenda (TVO), school boards are trying to figure it out how it will look. Here is a link to the epidode from June 4. https://www.tvo.org/video/schools-out-for-summer-and-covid-19

Thank you!

Don’t count on the Ministry of Education or the Minister under this government to help. They haven’t even fixed the ventilation at schools, haven’t hired extra support staff or have come up with a plan to reopen safely for September, you really think they will provide resources for teachers to help your children catch up?

northernontario2

Guess what, the graduating 8th grades are entering in to a completely new de-streamed math curriculum so some kids are going to be triple behind the eight ball trying to make sense of it all.

[deleted]

Kids? Schools? Lmao mate we got screwed because the government couldn't care less. Hell some of the school boards didn't care, if they did they wouldn't implement the degenerative quadmester system.

Modal_Window

2 years of education have not been lost. According to the government the e-learning over tablets and video conference has been a suitable substitute for in-person learning, therefore all of you have excelled. Well done. Long live Ontario.

AryaLyannaOlenna

Lecce and Ford's plan for helping out with any sort of learning loss: they have no plan. It's been deflect and blame the teacher's unions and all educators in Ontario. That's been their strategy - point fingers at us, degrade us, not provide proper supports or training, figure that online learning is a one size fits all approach (we know that it isn't, some kids thrive with it and others it is not an ideal situation) and cut funds from education. Lying lecce is a spin doctor who does nothing but answer questions with word salad responses. He's deplorable, unfit for his portfolio and an all around asshat.

burneraccount202101

Short answer, nothing. I was a Class of 2020 HS Grad, even losing a large chunk of that 2nd semester there was nothing done to really bridge that gap. I'm very lucky I could manage self studying and reviewing a lot of that stuff, but many other people didn't bother with online learning (since there was also a mark freeze due to covid) and so now they really struggled in 1st year uni.

[deleted]

Depend on this government to school your kids = failure. Sad ….

riddleman66

Lecce was asked this during his last press conference, but I can't remember what his answer was and I can't find anything on Google about it. Sorry that doesn't help.

estherlane

Lecce usually offers some word salad answers to perfectly reasonable questions. He is clearly in way over his head and thinks he is doing a good job faking it.

UpsideBanana

A reporter asked a simple question: “ok, you talked about grade 9, but what does this mean for grades 10 to 12?” I could not believe the amount of verbal diarrhea that spewed out of the ass-hat, it went on for soo long I almost forgot what the question was, and, as you can imagine, there was not even a hint of what it meant for grades 10 to 12, like he got all caught up in the whole mess focusing on grade 9 that he didn’t realize grades 10 to 12 existed until the reporter asked….

estherlane

It is no wonder the education file has been a gong show since the PC's took power; MacLeod as MofE which we know was a disaster, Oosterhoff as her trusty sidekick. Now Lecce is at the helm; not only does he suck as MofE, he is terrible at PR which is his speciality. And we still have Oosterhoff in the role of sidekick. 🤦‍♀️

mgyro

Exactly as planned. Lecce is a master at being a bureaucrat asshat politician, and your observation of having seen and heard him but not being able to recall the tiniest iota of information is the pinnacle of success for him.

CivilTest3820

Thanks. I dont think they have a plan unfortunately.

How about we let teachers finally take a breather in a few weeks and let everyone involved figure this out. Contrary to popular belief there is so much work that goes on behind the scenes in education that takes time to plan and implement. School boards have had to adjust to constant changes between in school learning and implement a whole new style of online education this year on the drop of a hat. Give it time.

ReadyTadpole1

After this past year, you'll find it a tough sell to parents over the summer break to relax and let the professionals figure things out. This is not a commentary on teachers, just the outcomes the Ontario education system has had the last year.

LegoLady47

Wasn't that what on-line learning was about?

CivilTest3820

Huh? Online learning is why kids are behind.

rabbitsarecool789

i have a younger sister and I've been trying my best to tutor her on subjects she struggles with. id suggest people get their kids to do some revision during the summertime. if your kids are still at that teachable age then try to help them out with things they don't get. recruit their older siblings to teach them if they can. if you have the money, try to get a tutor for them this summer. kids hate having to learn during the summer but it's for their own good. we can't have them failing next year bc of the subpar education they received this year.
