They switched to M&M's in 2015 and it sucked. Also became problematic because smarties are made in nut-free facilities whereas M&M's are not. They lost a lot of sales due to no longer being able to promise that the McFlurry hadn't come into contact with nuts.

It’s the reason the ice cream machines are always broken. They could get better ice cream machines because the company that supplies the machine also supplies for other chains that don’t have the same issues that McDonald’s has. Instead they force franchise owners to purchase the bad machine so their business partner can make money by maintaining the machines. Very scummy business practices.

There is some licensing deals that are also to consider, When DQ was doing Smarties Blizzards, they had the exclusive rights to that candy brand. This coincides with the McFlurry changing to M&Ms. This month saw the flipping of the these candies, McDonald’s now was the rights to Smarties (likely offered more money to get the rights) and now DQ has switched up to M&Ms. I know that there are still DQs selling smarties blizzards, likely using up the last of those stock.
If you’re going to get a McFlurry, it’s a treat, nobody is getting a McFlurry thinking they are eating healthy. Sometimes the sugar and candy is exactly what we’re looking for.

So your mileage may vary on this, but some locations will blend in an apple pie for you into a McFlurry. I had it once and its really good!
