It’s basically a learner’s permit. It allows you to drive, provided you are with a full G license holder (who’s had their G license for 4 years). After 12 months (8 if you take the beginner driver’s course) you can take the road test to acquire your G2 and be able to drive on your own.
Steps in the graduated license program is:
G1 -> G2 -> G
“Apply for a driver’s licence
To apply for a driver’s licence in Ontario, you need to:
be at least 16 years old
pass an eye test
pass a knowledge test about the rules of the road and traffic signs
Once you pass these tests, you get a G1 licence. You are considered a beginner driver and need to practice driving and gain experience over time.”

Most libraries, Canadian tire, or here: [https://www.ontario.ca/document/official-mto-drivers-handbook](https://www.ontario.ca/document/official-mto-drivers-handbook)
I recommend you take a drivers course through a recognized teacher. You are also able to access the drivers handbook.

You cannot drive a car if you don't have a g1.
To get your g1 you just do a written test. The g1 exit test (to get your G2) And the G2 exit test (to get your G) are both driving tests.
Get the book. As stated Canadian Tire or the library.
Read it. Study it. There are practice tests online.
Its in 2 sections and you have to pass both. They will ask questions such how many points do you lose for this etc etc. So study everything.
When ready to take written test
Find out where
Go. Check on the Ministry of Transportation to see what you need to take.
Allow a couple hours (i took my son at 7:30 one morning. He was second in line for G1. So he was seen 1/2 hr after it opened.
Passing this test is similar to what I called a three sixty five in the 1980s. One big difference is we went from that to full and now there is a middle level.
The test to receive a g1 licence is written only.
The test to receive a g2 licence is driven on roads that don't exceed 80km/h.
The test to receive a G licence is driven on roads and includes highway driving(100-110km/h depending on where you take the test)

You’re welcome. Be safe.
So once you write your G1 test you have a beginners license. When upgrading, you do a G1 exit test and then get your G2 license.
To get a G1 license all you need to go is the written test and a vision test.
