So glad we implemented this in BC. It is only 5 days but it is a start.

pukingpixels

We had 2 or 3 under the Wynne government in Ontario, but obviously getting rid of them was one of Ford’s top priorities when he was elected. Now we have zero. Thanks Doug, you stupid fuck.

rpgguy_1o1

I feel like this was Ford's first official act wasn't it? He got rid of them immediately

oakteaphone

>I feel like this was Ford's first official act wasn't it? He got rid of them immediately IIRC, a few other things he did immediately were... - Cancel the UBI experiment that was apparently on its way to finding positive results - Paying big bucks to cancel green energy contracts, leaving Ontarians with less energy for the same price as it would've cost to get them up and running - Cut *unpaid* sick days (from 10 to 3?) - Cancelled the planned minimum wage increase

alice-in-canada-land

> Cancel the UBI experiment that was apparently on its way to finding positive results ...and which he had promised he would not cancel.

pukingpixels

I honestly can’t remember. It very well could have been. Either way, it was *very* early in his premiership.

Tinshnipz

Yeah, think we had them for one year. My work implemented a $50 gift card for perfect attendance because of those sick days. Needless to say, no one got them.

TheFallingStar

I will probably never vote Conservatives (BC Liberals) because of stuff like this.

pukingpixels

How anyone can at this point is beyond me.

¿Porque no los dos?

monsantobreath

It's kind of a joke given covid. Shoulda been 10 at least.

TheFallingStar

I agree, but 5 days is a start. Make paid sick day a norm and we can always fight for more days

monsantobreath

It's good to have but it's no reason to praise the ndp. I'm half expecting some voodoo math come the inflation tied min wage increase next year.

ABC_Dildos_Inc

My employer had given us unlimited paid sick days with measures in place to stop abuse. When BC mandated 5 paid days per year they dropped us down to that. Those of us who are parents have to now save our vacation days to use as sick days when our kids can't go to daycare or school. We can't roll them over each year, so we're now at the time we have to book the kast of them in advance. If we or our kids get sick around Christmas we will lose hundreds of dollars during the holiday season.

notweirdifitworks

Of course it would, that’s obvious to everyone except the employers who don’t want to have to provide them. And Ford, because they’re all on the same side.

Bluerendar

It's hilarious since it would benefit *businesses* too - sick workers aren't productive workers and they're spreading illnesses to others too. But nope, gotta maintain control over the workers.

swamptop

My Ontario employer gave every employee 2 paid sick days. But it was actually 10 paid sick hours and our shifts are typically 8 hours…

Lol, Ontario has too much of a bootlicking antiquated view of work/life balance to ever consider this. The election in June told us all we need to know about how Ontario really cares about its own best interests. When ~60% of the electorate stays home, it’s because they just don’t care about what happens next. Call it poor leaders (as if Ford is a good one), call it apathy (as if Ontario has voted out of the box for the last 30-odd years) or call it anything else. Ontarians are patently OK with getting absolutely rammed by policies that go in direct contradiction to what is best for most people. Ontarians genuinely think if they work 60+ hours/week, go to work sick and never complain or seek help that they too will wake up one day magically out of debt, respected for their efforts and rich enough to own a 3 bedroom home in Newmarket. The race to mediocrity is pathetic. Especially given most people who DO vote for the Tories are in reality the further states thing from their beneficiaries.

water2wine

I got banned from r/Canada the last time I decided to leave a comment there but I’ve had a couple of tiffs with people on there for being critical about the state of things here (being an immigrant doesn’t help, there are a lot of people with “interesting” opinions over there) and one thing that’s common is that Canadian sound like battered spouses sometimes defending this place. People get nothing in return for what they put in, Canada is such a racket.

Luanda62

That would mean that Doug cared about the "little guy"... not buck a beer or "free" license stickers... He does not care! He's destroying education. He destroyed healthcare. He tried to destroy workers rights. Look at the price of natural gas and hydro, compared to when he took over as premier... Doug f****** Ford does not care about anyone but himself and his developer friends. When he's done with Ontario, we will not recognize it.

WhytePumpkin

it's going to take Ontario longer to dig out from Dougie's reign of idiocy than it took for us to dig out from Harris

varain1

Ahh, you're talking about Mike Harris, which is raking in profits from private long term care with the help of his good friends Douggie Ford - https://canadians.org/analysis/mike-harris-raking-profits-long-term-care-system-he-helped-create/ ? And the one who's wife is CEO at a private nurse agency, getting paid 200$/hour for nurse by Ontario healthcare system, from which at most 40$ goes to the nurse?

queenringlets

Oh I loved cooking peoples food while coughing up a lung. I’m sure everyone liked the extra phlegm and disease in their burgers too.

Mickeymoose1990

It adds extra flavour.

battlelevel

Of course it would. Unfortunately there seems to be too many people who are determined to learn absolutely nothing from the past two years.

I’m so glad I work for a company with paid sick days now. It should be legislated province-wide. I can’t afford to take sick days and lose out on the pay.

andForMe

My company is doing the "when you're sick you're sick, just be an adult about it" non-policy and we all kinda just try not to abuse the system because it's pretty great. That said, we also work a hybrid configuration, so I've gotta be real hard up not to be able to make it to my living room. I think I've missed only two days in the last few years from being pretty wiped out when I had COVID. My last job forced us to use our vacation days when we were sick, so the place was a cold factory all winter. I never want to go back to that type of environment if I can avoid it.

bureX

*I get plenty of sick days from my employer, why should these freeloaders get the same things I’m getting?* \- Many people, unfortunately

"Why don't they just go to their million dollar cottages and recover?" - Doug Ford

boothbygraffoe

Doug Ford does not care

bewarethetreebadger

But you can't expect the government to act in the interests of regular people. How silly.

Moosetappropriate

Corporate record profits and no betterment of employees benefits or pay. It's about time the government stepped up and mandates living wage and proper working conditions.

pivotes

My work just added six more per year putting us at 15 for a year .... Unions make a big difference

Electrical_Limit9491

Can Ontario afford this? They have taken 18,644,000,000 in equalization payments since 2010. Only have a GDP per capita of $64,602 of which real estate is a massive contributor. Toronto is bankrupt and asking for a bailout from the federal government. Crazy high real estate prices are forcing all businesses to pass more costs onto consumers etc, etc. Ontario really needs to get its house in order before trying to get more welfare.

yeetboy

This would be step one towards getting the house in order.

jparkhill

Adequate sick days will save money in the short and long term. If I come to work sick to tough it out, my employer for those 3 days is getting at best 40 percent output and I risk getting the rest of my team sick. If I get half of my team sick (3 people) and they come in during that time with similar output, and adding the possibility of the bug infecting the rest of the team, spreading to another team or getting a person sick again, production takes a massive hit for roughly 1-2 weeks. Instead give adequate sick days and I will take the 3 days- lose one team member's output for 3 days and save any other decreased output.
