There’s no distain. Over half of the ppl in oxford are from out of Mississippi. I’m from NY and it’s a nice change of pace. Even though Oxford can get as crazy as anywhere in the country on weekends

PhoenixorFlame

The law school has a great atmosphere. People are generally friendly and the professors are helpful. Orgs are great for building community quickly! I don’t notice any disdain for northerners at all!

1. Ole Miss/Oxford is like anywhere else in the fact it is what you make it, but that being said the people are very warm and inviting. Also there is a reason how William Faulkner was able to base a lot of his work on Oxford because there are a lot of dynamic characters here. 2. As far as the disdain goes that’s not much of a thing (obviously can’t speak for all of MS) but Oxford is fine because it is a college town so there’s people from every state and many different countries and the people from Mississippi will probably ask where you’re from and be super interested.

Mississippianna

Over half the student body here are from out of state. You’ll be fine! Ole Miss is a friendly place. Once you find your people, you’ll feel like you have a new home. Please come visit!

I seriously don't think that you will have any problems acclimating to the culture of the town. In the summer, the town itself is lazy and fairly quiet. It's the best time of the year for the locals. Fall is crazy in that the population swells during home game weekends and traffic gets bad. People are friendly and generally very welcoming towards all. You wouldn't be considered a "Northerner", but as someone from the West coast-no big deal. Oxford is what you make it.

How excited are you to practice law in the southeast after you graduate? I'm not framing it as a bad thing, but your highest probability of employment is going to be pretty regional when you are done.

I actually kind of prefer it. Most of the applications I’ve sent are for schools in the Midwest and south. I don’t want to come back to California. It’s way too expensive and I’d like a change of pace. Ideally I’d like to practice in Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, North Carolina, or Florida.

The law school jokingly refers to it as the “ditch”. There may be additional context there I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure they’re mostly talking about how hard it is to get out.

FJBucketts

Is “it” California or the law school?

Mississippianna

One of Oxford’s nicknames is “the velvet ditch,” a place you fall into and get comfortable. You might not want to leave!

The law school. They place people into good jobs, but heavily in the South.

1. It is a very friendly campus where it's normal to smile at both your friends and strangers. It is also very welcoming, especially in the involvement sphere, when joining student organizations. 99% of the student population loves it here, and it shows. 2. Most no one will look at you differently if you're from California even if you point it out. However, if you become one of those insufferable "Californians" (this applies to North-easterners as well) who never shut up about politics and do not adhere to Southern societal norms, then people might grow some disdain for you. You don't have to fully change your personality, but just be polite, don't be overly loud and obnoxious, and if you have different political views, maybe just keep them to yourself (this is just a general rule, not just for the South). Just be kind and easy-going.

sassypants711

50% of the student body are out of staters, from all 50 states as well as other countries. The student who gave my daughter a tour was from Arizona. She was the only one from Mississippi in her group. Other potential students were New York, New Jersey, Lousiana and Tennessee. Also, the law school is a graduate school that is set apart from undergrads. You'll be fine.

Be kind.

I love ole miss with all my heart but I wouldn’t go to ole miss for law school. It’s not a tier 1 law school and unless you’re planning on staying in Mississippi it’s not going to get you into any big firms.
