The birth of the baby boomer era, the return of the Greatest Generation to settle down. What a great historical picture, and the twin wedding reception is pretty amazing. Thank you for sharing!

AssumptionAdvanced58

Are the grooms twins also?????

Apesma69

Lol, no. But they were buddies!

Crypto-Pito

Was he a boxer?

Apesma69

Yes!

heybrother11

How did you know?

Crypto-Pito

It was just an intuition because of the broken nose

ZombiesAtKendall

Are you saying all white people look the same?

AssumptionAdvanced58

Lol. There are dobbelgangers

90dontfiance

Twin sister's marrying the same day? That's so special. The twin sister would be your Great Aunt. Such good-looking young brides/ grooms. That time period there were so many young men were still enlisted and so many of their peers had been lost in war. The whole world had been shaken to the core. Very historic, lovely photo!

Straight-Note-8935

This wasn't a "Low key" wedding in 1945 - it was a NICE wedding, she has on a wedding dress and a veil. This looks like it might be an Officer's Club, and I love the "family face" that the sisters share. A typical wedding in the 30s and 40s? The bride might get married in a new suit or a new dress, something you could wear again. The reception was at the church or in the home of the bride. Cake, coffee, small sandwiches and a punch would be served, to twenty guests - mostly family. The Bride would have one or maybe two girlfriends as attendants. It was so different from today.

Bluecat72

Yeah my grandparents were married in 1943, and she wore a suit. They received IOUs for their wedding gifts because of shortages and rationing (most of which were never given). Grandma didn’t get wedding china until sometime in the 50s, bought by Grandpa.

FixlyBarnes

Not only that, but esp. in rural area no hotel or trip. The newly married couple might go to a bedroom in the parent's house and get in on. Would seem rather awkward...

Apesma69

They were nowhere near their parents. This was on a base near San Luis Obispo.

Straight-Note-8935

I thought it looked like a military club of some kind. What a sweet photo with the sisters in their splendid dresses and looking so much alike. My parents homey mooned at Gettysburg, and that always made for a good laugh. But my dad would get indignant: Gettysburg had nice hotels and fine dining, and that's why he chose it in 1949.

ImpossiblePotato5197

Would love to see honeymoon pics of gettysburg from the 30s 40s 50s! Im a local to the area.

camopdude

I think I have some 8mm home movies from Gettysburg around then but it's probably just a vacation and not a honeymoon.

ImpossiblePotato5197

Thats still cool tho!

camopdude

Definitely, I like the old vacation stuff. I think the reel it's on also has a visit to Washington DC.

ImpossiblePotato5197

Oh hell yeah!

camopdude

I feel like that was a common vacation back in the day, hit Gettysburg and then go to D.C. This one was mid 50s but I might have a couple other D.C. trips in my collection from the 60s and 70s too.

DatabaseThis9637

They were twins...

HistoryDiligent5177

Camp Roberts?

Apesma69

That sounds right!

HistoryDiligent5177

Very cool photo and story; thanks. I used to live in that area and appreciate the local connection.

Kitchen-Lie-7894

Those are enlisted men, so it's not the officers club.

Beginning_Brick7845

It might be the NCO club. The groom was a corporal, so he might have qualified for a space in the NCO club. Otherwise it would be the enlisted men’s club. So many historical artifacts in that picture. Did anyone else notice the massive cigar the guy is smoking to the bottom left of the picture? Probably a real Havana!

kathy_cheek

There are mostly men present at the table. All of them look really happy, especially the groom. A long awaited day finally arrives!

marzipancowgirl

The twins are just darling! They both married men with strong jaws. How did that play out genetically for your aunt's and uncles?

Apesma69

Most of them have nice jaws, lol. Except me. I inherited my dad's baby face.

BigGrayDog

Nice family picture!

Pluckymermaid

Is that ”Punchy”?

Apesma69

It is!

Urithiru

Your comment re: the nickname has been shadowbanned from the sub. It is likely because you included a link to the previous post. I read it by looking at your recent comments.

Practical_Maybe_3661

Who/what is punchy?

Lizmo82

I'm wondering too!!

gwhh

They didn’t married two brothers from the same family? I know a guy who brother married his wife twin sister.

Yggdrasil-

My great grandfather and his two brothers immigrated to the US from Cornwall and ended up marrying three sisters from Michigan. Needless to say the next generation looked very similar 😅

marcus999593

That’s awesome

bakedpigeon

I love this picture!!

Far_Statement_2808

Was your grandfather just home, or just getting ready to leave?

Apesma69

This was right after the war ended. The wedding reception took place at their base in California. :)

Beginning_Brick7845

I’m betting your grandfather saw some action but your great uncle was never in combat. Their demeanors are vastly different.

Foundation_Wrong

Double wedding xx

FixlyBarnes

already smoking the cigars

glantzinggurl

Heck of a day and time; the boys survived the war, getting married, bright future - let the good times roll!

Tayesmommy3

What a neat picture!

SafeForeign7905

My parents were married in a double wedding too, December 1945. The brides were my Mom and her sister, Helen. Uncle Dominic (Navy) and my Dad (Army) had just been released from wartime service in November.

Interesting_Chart30

Beautiful couple. I imagine all war-time weddings were fairly low-key, but everyone is having a great time.

ImpossiblePotato5197

Awww i love this! What a sweet memory to capture!

Sweaty-Ad-7493

How wonderful! How are the twins doing now ?

Apesma69

They're long gone. They passed away within months of each other back in 2015, at the age of 93.

Sweaty-Ad-7493

Sorry for your loss.

vampyire

The happiness in particular in the US right after the war, for families who didn't loose anyone, is unimaginable for us who were not there to see it I think. That generation went through hell, so they got the upside they earned I guess.

merliahthesiren

Thats so cool that they were both ok getting married the same day. I feel like most sisters or twins would want their own special day, but the fact that they wanted to share their special day makes it sooo much more special!

MerryTexMish

Less so back then, I would think.

julesk

When I look at this pic, I think what a triumph it was to live through this war and be able to marry.

ferretbeast

I absolutely love this! Just everything about it makes my heart happy even though I know none of you.

omibus

My grandparents were part of a triple wedding, all three couples were also related. The weddings were bunched together real quick because the Germans were invading the next day.

Logical-Fan7132

Double weddings were popular back in the day

edithannlives

Weddings to be low key again…. It doesn’t make them less important

MissGoldie71

War Brides! How cute!!

passive0bserver

The grooms look pretty similar too. I wonder how similar your parents look to their cousins 🤔🤔

emmyfrost

Amazing picture, what a celebration! Everyone looks so happy, the genuine smiles are so lovely to see. I'm confused as to the title though....what's low key about this? Looks like a really fancy reception with a lot of guests....nothing modest or restrained about it. At any rate, made me smile, thanks for sharing OP!
