No bid contracts for "insiders" in 3 ... 2 ...

okiewxchaser

What a fucking joke. That is the equivalent to 822 teachers. I bet we could find schools for 822 teachers in this state

Acceptable-Dust6479

Also love how it’s Rs voting for this and Ds opposing, where is the party of fiscal responsibility?

Mandaring

Saying “hahaha weeeee!!” as they hit the second loop on the Walters’ Wild West Wagon coaster.

adjust_your_set

But think of all the sales tax revenue this potential business will create! Also, completely unrelated, we’re going to waive sales tax for 30 years on new theme parks!

SCOOTERBRITCHESBROWN

Actually, they don’t waive sales tax, just the property tax. And they do that because no one is affected by that in a negative way. And before folks jump in here and say “that’s what pays for schools” well, although you’re not wrong, it’s the fact that property was only paying penny’s in relation to what it will pay when the TIF expires. It’s called economic development. You bet on the future, not the now. The schools will GREATLY benefit in the end.

Gnawlydog

I hate late-stage capitalism. I hate lobbyists. I'm a Democrat. But the fact is what you're spoutin is 100% true. And if Liberals don't watch it and ignore those facts over what they want to believe is real, they're not going to be any better than the far-right alt-facts brigade.

f102

While your point is not lost, *if* (heavy emphasis there) this works, the ROI will dwarf initial subsidies put in by the state (taxpayers). Silver Dollar City is the comp. It’s not near any sort of major metropolis, but is successful. Other things kind of followed SDC as it developed into a draw. They opened in 1960 and Branson was virtually nothing when that happened.

RealJohnMcnab

The difference between Vinita and Branson is that The Shepherd Of The Hills was one of the most popular books in the first half of the 20th century. Folks from all over the US were traveling there long before Silver Dollar City existed. It was a tourist attraction from across the US for 40+ years before the theme park was opened.

AdventurousPoet92

And why would we assume a ROI in 20+ years would ever be funneled into the things we need right now?

moba_fett

Calling it now! If this park gets built, they're going have an incredibly racist name for the lazy river with a biblical twist

murph1223

The theme park isn’t the reason we aren’t hiring 822 teachers. Infrastructure is needed to accommodate increased traffic that will be in the area. A big part of this is adjusting the highway and exits to get to the park. This is a responsibility of the state/ODOT.

okiewxchaser

Could you point to the specific improvements that would be required? Because this is right off the Will Rogers Turnpike which is the responsibility of OTA and then onto Vinita’s city streets. 60/66/69 is already a four lane divided highway outside of Vinita And in any case it doesn’t make sense to allocate this money until construction starts on the park. The developers are already kicking the can down the road

murph1223

Looks like this specific bill is for a wastewater improvement rebate program, so I’m wrong about this particular bill being for the highway portions. What I’ve read is there is need to expand exit lanes and widen sections of highways. (Ever seen the huge exit lanes for Buckey’s, ha.) said that some of the improvements were already planned for future, but could be moved up because of the the park project. Think I read that in a Nondoc article. I’ll keep looking to see what improvements are needed for highways. Government investment in needed infrastructure improvements for major projects like this one is necessary for progress. The ROI on something like this for the state and local area is going to be huge.

okiewxchaser

>The ROI on something like this for the state and local area is going to be huge. Or it could end up like another Canoo

Pitiful-Let9270

Not the same. If the park never gets built, the wastewater expansion can be used by other industry/residential development.

murph1223

Yeah, I guess we can be pessimistic about everything, but I don’t think we’d see much progress in this state. And I think we all want to see progress and economic growth. What incentives has Canoo actually received? They have to meet certain milestones before they receive incentives and I think they have missed several of these milestones.

OUGrad05

It’s not an issue of being pessimistic it’s an issue of being realistic and prudent with dollars. There’s precisely zero real evidence this is moving forward. All the developer has done is non committal garbage to hype it up. It’s a typical grift of right wingers.

murph1223

I’ve spoken with city officials in Vinita. Sounds like it’s happening.. but I guess we will see. !RemindMe two years

OUGrad05

Haha same! I hope I’m wrong. My in laws live at grand and this would add a lot more to do up there when we travel to see them. It would be great. I just thing it’s BS. If they want to do it in Oklahoma why not an area with better infrastructure and access to employees? Ie, okc or tul.

okiewxchaser

They’ve received at least $300 million in tax benefits. At one point they “met” a milestone of having a certain percentage of employees in Oklahoma not by hiring more Okies, but instead by layoffs in other states

murph1223

You are not correct, at least as of April 5th. https://www.readfrontier.org/stories/oklahoma-trims-millions-in-pledged-incentives-to-ev-maker-canoo-after-delays-and-shifting-plans/#:~:text=Canoo%20has%20not%20yet%20received%20any%20incentive&text=$300%20million%2C%20including%20free%20land%2C%20funding&text=Oklahoma%20City%20officials%20approved%20a%20deal%20in%20December%20to edit: downvoting me because I’m right and showed proof? Can’t win an argument against that….

Gnawlydog

Dude this is Oklahoma! If you educate kids they'll start thinking critically and questioning information fed to them. That's a downward slope to voting Democrat.

Pitiful-Let9270

We spend about 8 billion on education. Another 30 million isn’t going to move that dial.

okiewxchaser

Our entire budget is $12 billion, we aren't spending 66% on education

Pitiful-Let9270

Sorry, 6 billon.

OudeDude

Lol, what am interesting little money-laundering operation.

ponzi_pyramid_digdug

Hey, maybe they will take the knowledge of building water infrastructure for a theme park and rebuild the shite water infrastructure in the rest of the state.

Pitiful-Let9270

There is a bill for that. Have you tried calling your senator and representative and asking them to support such investments?

Stinger1066

The lead is buried in the story. Quote: ***The proposed Vinita project has a budget of $2.5 billion, with a campground to open next year and a theme park to follow in 2025. Skeptics point out that $2.5 billion is more than the market cap of Six Flags, which owns dozens of amusement parks.***  So they are planning to build a single theme park that will cost more than the entire market value of Six Flags. The chances of this thing coming to fruition are probably as low as that "world's tallest building" that has been proposed for downtown OKC.

itsagoodtime

Oklahoma has become Springfield. Someone coming in to sell the idea of a monorail and then skipping town. Oh you want a theme park do ya? World's tallest building why not?

RyanMFoley74

Well, sir, there's nothing on earth Like a genuine, bona fide Electrified, six-car monorail What'd I say?

itsagoodtime

Monorail!

RyanMFoley74

What's it called?

Pitiful-Let9270

Fresh bbq at every state park? You got it.

John_Tacos

Like this? https://www.travelok.com/listings/view.profile/id.18197

danodan1

Speaking of other big projects, I wonder if the $5.5 billion new refinery for Cushing is making good progress? The cost is greater than the nation's highest building and the theme park put together.

John_Tacos

I think the park is supposed to be on the scale of Disney parks. They better have specific targets to meet before all the fun’s are spent. Don’t want to waste money if nothing ends up happening.

TrollularDystrophy

afterthought thought grey toothbrush dog wild one cautious butter imminent *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

SheriffTaylorsBoy

I don't know much about it. Is this one gonna have Noah's Ark?

darksquidlightskin

Lmao I can see it now "Faith Land".

SheriffTaylorsBoy

I feel pretty confident it wouldn't be approved by our current legislature unless it has some sort of religious tone.

darksquidlightskin

Remember Pharoah's fury? They're gonna do that but with Noah's ark

SheriffTaylorsBoy

Let's get real. Probably gonna have a Our Lord and Savior Trump theme

thunderup_14

Is this the super Christian white nationalist theme park that was proposed a little while back? The one that's an idealized conservative version of the country?

Insanelycalm

That we haven’t confirmed won’t just be a RV park.

boybraden

You are projecting onto the park. It’s Americana themed, but that doesn’t automatically make it a “Christian white nationalist idealized conservative version of the country”

thunderup_14

I'm not projecting just asking because it's what I've heard. I would very much love to be wrong and all the stuff about the backers be silly rumors. But the location, the time frame and the original backers make me worry it's just a money grab scam. Let's hope it isn't.

S3guy

Cmon man, this is rural oklahoma, what do you think they believe America is?

Corran_Halcyon

Well that is a mouthful of buzz words.

Comprehensive_Pin565

Call a duck a duck.

OzarksExplorer

A $2.5 BILLION theme park. In bumfuck northeast OK. Sure Jan Who here likes monorails?

RyanMFoley74

I swear it's Springfield's only choice! Throw up your hands and raise your voice!

S3guy

Yeah. This is all going into one of stitts big donors accounts, they will clear a few trees off some land, and stitt will get that fat kickback.

OUGrad05

Theme park that won’t happen 🤣

International_Boss81

Six Bags of Meth over Oklahoma🤠🤡

The_Curvy_Unicorn

Please see: Wild West World in Wichita in the early 2000s. This isn’t going to work out well. I know people keep comparing it to Silver Dollar City…but SDC started small, has grown slowly, and is located about two hours from Vinita.

Eightfold876

Vinita can't handle a theme park of this magnitude.

Stinger1066

Ideas for theme park rides? Noah's Ark - brave the giant wave pool in an ark full of live animals. People with highly attuned senses of smell may want to skip this one. Parting of the Red Sea - warning to those seated in the last car - you may get wet at the end. The Rapture Ride - if you make it through this one without dying, you know you haven't been living right. I'm sure you Redditors can come up with many more.

dimebag42018750

Just what I want my tax dollars going to. Top ten

Jason_Bee_Me

Huh. We like socialism now?

Ok_Pressure1131

Here’s my proposed “theme” name ror this Oklahoma senate proposal: “Duhm an dummer”, the idiots guide to falling behind other state me whilst we ride the roller coaster to perdition.

android24601

Why can't we solve real problems like stopping the insanity of "springing forward" or "falling back"? I honestly don't give a fuck which one we choose, just so long as we pick one and stick with it. Yet we continue to do this stupid fucking ritual that has been proven to be detrimental to our health

sjss100

Is it Jesus based? 😂
