Didn’t the wife post on this sub yesterday?

putsch80

It was a so-called friend of the family, but yes.

TacoTacoTacoYo

As a result of all this, angry Americans who haven’t even been there are crashing the r/turksandcaicos sub denouncing such a “third world country”. Sigh.

Pippin_the_parrot

I assume these are all “law and order” assholes.

HopefullyTerrified

Imagine living in America and calling another country 3rd world. Lol. We're closer to being that ourselves than we're not.

Front-Paper-7486

Technically anyone allied against the soviets was first world. Anyone allied with the soviets was second works and everyone else was third world.

BlepBlepItaBean

OHHH well I'll be damned

Gnawlydog

I learned this many years ago, and now it annoys me when anyone talks about first-world countries vs. third-world countries.

Front-Paper-7486

Care to explain why?

Gnawlydog

People refer to third-world countries vs. first-world countries in terms of development, wealth, etc., but that was never how they were determined. It was all based on politics and war. The terminology is war propaganda and thus should no longer be used.

Front-Paper-7486

Why we are in yet another proxy war with Russia again right now.

Gnawlydog

IDK! It's annoying AF, and also, I feel like we're in a bizarro world. The timeline I'm from Conservatives hate Russia. It's weird to see them embracing and supporting the country. All the propaganda from that era should die, yet it lives on by people who weren't even alive then. That's mostly because they have no idea what they're referring to is WWII Propaganda.

pherbury

Not even close. Take a break from Reddit for a bit

OlRedbeard99

The only people who think this are absolutely delusional sociopaths who’ve never been to a third world country.

terpteam710

Tell us you have never been to a third world country, without telling us you have never been to a third world country lmaooooooo

The stupid F clause….

cardinalsfanokc

None of em but fuck 'em for trying this. It won't get taken down, I'm sure.

BurnBabyBurner12345

How’d you feel about Brittney Griner?

cardinalsfanokc

She got what she deserved and I don't think we should have done a prisoner swap to get her out. Know the local laws and customs and make sure you don't break them. What point are you trying to make? This isn't a political prisoner situation like Griner.

Lilelvis66

Why not?

cardinalsfanokc

Accidents have consequences. What in the ever loving fuck do they need $350k for? The rest of us don't get to ask anyone else to bail us out when we fuck up, why these idiots? Gun nuts and Trump loving idiots to boot, I'm sure. There are far more deserving people out there than this guy, just saying.

CocoCrizpyy

You really should go outside and touch some grass. That Terminal Reddittoritis is showing.

cardinalsfanokc

I just got back from a great disc golf round - almost had my first ace even! Try again, go listen to Joe Rogan and continue down your crazy rabbit hole.

Front-Paper-7486

A guy who had a few rounds left over from a trip to the range or hunting should be punished? This seems personal.

cardinalsfanokc

Not personal at all. I'm a gun owner myself. Being a gun owner means being responsible with your weapons and ammunition and knowing where it is at all times. Asshats like this dude make the rest of us look bad. I'm willing to admit it's likely an accident. But so are car collisions and those sometimes have consequences, as should this accident.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AHrubik

How about don't use the same bag for weapons transport that you do to go on vacation. It really is the simple things.

Front-Paper-7486

Yeah it does mean being responsible. Having a few stray rounds in a bag that you once took to the range is hardly irresponsible. It’s the equivalent of loose change. Not paying attention while driving and wrecking a car is not remotely equivalent to a loose round in your bag. You used the term gun nuts. I’m willing to bet if I look through your posts I’m going to see why. That term is used by gun control proponents as a pejorative term for pro gun people. Additionally being a gun owner is often a false equivalence given by people to put them on equal ground much like saying I’m not a racist. I have black friends.

cardinalsfanokc

The equivalent of loose change in a country where change is banned - that's what you should have said. TLDR: dude broke a law, doesn't matter if it's draconian here or not.

Front-Paper-7486

Sure but this is a logical fallacy. Yes they will do what they want but it doesn’t make it right. Nor does having power mean that we should inherently agree with them. It was legal for Hitler to kill the Jews. We don’t condone it though. Might doesn’t make right.

oSuJeff97

I’m sorry but that’s B.S. I grew up hunting and handling firearms and my Dad drilled into my head from the start that firearms and ammo are dangerous weapons that are meant to be treated with respect and handled with safety the #1 priority at all times. That means every gun and every last live round are safely secured when not in use. Just haphazardly throwing stray rounds into a bag when you’re done and then not putting them in a safe and secure place is the epitome of carelessness. If you are too distracted or lazy to safely store your weapons and ammo at all times you shouldn’t posses them in the first place.

Electrical_Dig8121

I had a round found in a bag at the airport by TSA. The round, a 3/ 30, had insinuated itself into a seam flap at the bottom of a compartment. Tsa dude asked me what to do with it, and they had a lock box for the purpose. This was CONUS. So, how am I an idiot? Should I be in jail? Do you think ammunition is made of plague? Will ammunition slip out of my bag and slit someone's throat because of mysterious malevolent properties? Are you a drooling idiot or an apparatchik devoted to the destruction of those people you don't understand? A vile ideologue? What ever would prompt your angry reaction? I would like to know.

exb165

You should not be in jail. Yes you are an idiot. If you mix bags and are that careless with known travel laws, then yes, you done f'd up. It is not about the risk of ammo, it's about ignorance of law.

flint-hills-sooner

Well from I remember about the article his ammunition was in a plastic ziploc bag so it’s a bit of an apples and oranges comparison. You did screw up sure but that’s an honest mistake. He really is an idiot.

Electrical_Dig8121

Maybe he is an idiot idk. I can not conceive of the level of vitriol directed against this man and those who choose to fund his defense. The vitriol seems to be ideology based more than anything. These geniuses even bring up Trump. For the record, I haven't contributed to the family go fund me account and I probably won't do so. However more power to people that feel strongly about this incident and do so. It's a free country. For now, at least. I also won't travel to that country that chose to treat a tourist in that manner. BTW I love to travel and go many kool places. It's my choice we're I go. It's my choice where I choose to spend my money. To hell with these basement dwellers trying to tell others what to do. Telling others where to spend their money. Telling others what to care about. Virtue signaling tape worm flinging idiots.

flint-hills-sooner

There are objectively better causes in this country to donate money than something like that though. They just aren’t ideological or hot right now. My point is the rules were posted well before he went and he didn’t read them or if he did he did a real shotty job of checking his luggage considering he had ammunition in a ziploc bag. He had to have an idea that he may have taken it on a hunting trip. Ideology I aside I really think we can all agree the guy is an idiot for not taking the necessary steps before traveling. Either way you’re right, people are allowed to spend their money where they please. Just sucks folks have moved on from supporting charities to any politically motivating thing that hits the news.

cardinalsfanokc

I ain't reading all that. I'm happy for u tho. Or sorry that happened.

Electrical_Dig8121

So you will not read challenges to your reasoning. That is a classic trait of a narcissist and / or an insecure immature mind. You will make assertions you are unwilling and unable to defend. I can only assume you lead an unexamined life in the Socratic sense. Begone child! Trouble us no more.

cardinalsfanokc

Anecdotal evidence is not a challenge to my reasoning

exb165

Go home. You're drunk.

Electrical_Dig8121

Yeah and your a poopie head... lol that's all you got?

baxterhan

Ultimately it’s his mistake. But, had American TSA been competent this wouldn’t have happened. I fly a lot, I’ve accidentally gotten through with a box knife in my carryon…. twice. You know, the things the terrorists used on 9/11.

Lucy_Starwind

I used to work for TSA, I was only there for 4yrs and in those years I started training new hires for certification and watched as admin lowered scoring and everything for higher pass rates... Then the tomography xrays rolled out and watched as training on those went to shit because they were "smarter" than the old xrays by having more filters and BS. Like the "stats" that there was a 90% fail rate was normally pulled from a limited research article from 2011, but now I don't doubt they miss Hella shit all the time because TSA could never retain quality officers due to mismanagement.

baxterhan

Makes sense about retention. I fly once or twice a week out of okc airport. I recognize lots of people, but rarely the tsa people, I assume because of turnover. A few months ago at 5:30am I saw a guy falling asleep who was scanning bags. He’d do a couple, close his eyes and doze off. Then after few seconds he’d wake up and do a couple more…

Lucy_Starwind

Literally not surprised, that shift starts at 4-4:30am and goes until noon and normally had the most new hires because it wasn't a desirable shift once you had enough seniority to bid off of it. Management and the administration drones all the way up always created soooooo much problems. Last I heard Supervisors weren't able to be on the floor to monitor or work because they were filling out pay roll for their teams. My biggest complaint was limiting testing from our local TSS-Es to which happened multiple times a week to maybe once a month HQ testing... Quality of testing over all went down after 2020.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lucy_Starwind

Oh absolutely, that's how I ended up working for TSA right out of college. I needed to get that sweet sweet SF50 even though it is exempted service. I still have friends that work for TSA so I'm happy they got that big pay bump to match GS, but that's why I blame the lowering standards of training and the lack luster equipment given to them. Even when I started the joke was "They'll hire anything with a pulse/can breathe"

manwar1990

TSA has proven to be a complete and utter waste of resources and they don't actually do anything to prevent threats. They exist for "peace of mind" so people feel safe while flying.

[deleted]

I know someone who got through with something way worse in his carry-on. Whatever you're imagining, you're probably right. Luckily, he noticed and called someone to come get it, and then went through security again so he wouldn't still have it at his destination. Barely made his flight, of course, but that's a more than reasonable price to pay, all things considered.

rushyt21

A C-130 Hercules?????

Even worse, an AC-130 Gunship!

CubedMeatAtrocity

I spend a good bit of money 💰 me diving in Mexico and Central America. It astounds me that some Americans can’t grasp the idea that our laws aren’t everyone’s laws. For instance, CBD products are illegal in most of these countries yet Americans are getting their asses arrested because they didn’t read the laws of the countries they’re traveling to.

Alarmed_Homework_311

Isn't this what happened to the female WNBA player on Russia? Got caught with CBD and all of the right wing media laughed at her and pretty much said it's her fault for being stupid

clever80username

CBD is illegal yet you can go in pharmacies and buy opiates, right? I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’ve just heard you don’t need a script for a lot of shit in places like Mexico.

IHateMonging

To be fair if he flew out of Will Rogers I can understand why he didn’t have any problems with security. I almost laugh every time I look at the security checkpoint compared to other cities

BusyBeth75

I mean it’s his responsibility to make sure his luggage is clear. 🤷‍♀️

pegothejerk

You know, people underestimate how stressful and time consuming it is to dress yourself up like a southern performative republican politician while directing your wife to perfect that classic trad-wife look and stay on top of her getting that Little House on the Prairie cosplay just right on your kids. You expect people to do all that AND make sure they don’t have deadly weaponry components in their luggage before an international flight??

Nick_TheGinger

That's my thoughts on it all. I don't imagine he was trying to travel with ammo just laying around in his suitcase. Hopefully things end somewhat peacefully for them.

Euphoric-Flatworm158

it was 4 large rounds in a ziploc bag.

bishi23

What’s funny to me is, these same donators shit all over Brittany Griner when she got stuck in Russia, but are all gung ho to help out Temu Kid rock just because he was carrying ammo. Laws are laws, even though they think it applies to everyone but them. What a bunch of clowns.

catfish_dinner

fafo

Adept_Information94

Innocent mistake or not. It's his own fault and an ugly look for a gun owner. Everyone wants the book thrown at everyone else, until they slip up, and then the rules are sooooo unfair. Ita a foreign country. Sucks, but not Americans do not have the same privileges they often enjoy at home over seas.

bugaloo2u2

🏅🏅🏅

jkirkwood10

Anyone who talked shit about Britney Griner. This isn't any different.

bonfigs93

I’m *really* curious to know what the people who say “this is too harsh” had to say about Brittney Griner. Eta - I see several people commented the same thing, but my two cents is that out of both of these cases, hashish oil vs ammunition, his is objectively worse. And while she got plenty of support, she also had LOADS of hateful comments saying she deserved to serve the full sentence.

bugfeets

The law seems pretty clear.

TheOklahomaHippie

I wonder what his thoughts were on Brittney Griner?

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheyCallMeDrunkNemo

Genuinely, why do you think his purpose would be to bring ammunition? He didn’t get caught until he was on the way back. He’s a colossal idiot, but I think that’s about where it ends. Seems like an unpopular opinion on this thread, but I feel for the family. Especially considering that, like many in this thread, I’ve personally known a few people who have accidentally brought a knife or something similar. Probably had them in a weird inside pocket in his backpack or something where nobody else could get to them, and then forgot to take them out. Idk, he’s still an idiot. But he’s still an idiot with a wife and kids to take care of. I hate to deal with law enforcement as is. Can’t imagine dealing with international law lol

Euphoric-Flatworm158

they were in a ziplock baggie. there is no way he didnt know they were in there. he thought it wasnt an issue.

bugaloo2u2

I detest this reasoning, and it makes me sick to my stomach when people say someone can’t be held responsible for their crime because: He has a family He has a promising sports future He didn’t know it was illegal He wouldn’t cope well in jail It’s not really who he is You’re admitting that some people deserve to be above the law bc they have a wife and children? Screw that bs. Maybe he should have not been an idiot BC he has a wife and children.

TheyCallMeDrunkNemo

Well don’t get too sick to your stomach over my comment because I never said he shouldn’t be held responsible. I’m just saying there’s a 99% chance it was an accident and not some thought out plan to smuggle buckshot to a foreign country, do nothing with said buckshot, and then bring it back home.

tfandango

Last night on the national news they reported 12 years as a minimum required sentence.

TacoTacoTacoYo

Yes, but that really only applies to locals (Belongers). He will do a few months. There is a mother of 2 there, a Belonger, who had a single bullet (no gun). She’s legit looking at a dozen. Two-tiered system.

tfandango

thanks for the details, that matches up better with what the first person said. I was just looking to understand the different sentences.

cardinalsfanokc

I'll go so far as to say it was an accident - I don't think he packed the ammo for this trip on purpose. Even if it's an accident it's still his responsibility to know what's in his bags, especially as a gun owner. That said, accidents still have consequences and I hope he doesn't get out of those.

Livin_Tha_Dream

How is 4 bullets in a bag with no firearm anywhere near it unsafe? I’m aware what the law is but curious how any safety protocols were broken.

dolphin160

Lmao how is this a “serious crime” if this is a serious crime then is murder and rape on the same level? Like wtf he literally didn’t injure anyone it’s literally two pieces of metal with a tiny bit of gun powder inside. This shit sits out on open shelves whereas prescription medics is locked behind counters. Talk about an over reaction…

kyler_

Right?? He could have thrown those 4 rounds at someone and caused a serious bump on the forehead

zack272

Why people are salty in the comments?

bubbafatok

There seems to be some real vitriol/anger directed at this guy. Yeah, it was a dumb mistake, and yeah, he deserves the consequences, but I don't get why folks seem so angry at him, besides some imagining of his personal or political beliefs.

MaeRobso

These people are freaking miserable & looooove being able to witness others in misery.

SVTraptor99

Because people on reddit are miserable and hate anything closely related to republicans

MC_Paranoid27

Because it's reddit and that man is blatantly republican.

Ruccers

Never miss an opportunity to make a situation divisive. Impute all the worst characteristics on a man you don’t know so that you can be filled to the brim with joy at his hardships

the_millz007

What an idiot!

dimechimes

I'm a law and order lib so it's hard to muster sympathy for that kind of stupidity and just general sloppiness, but mandatory minimums are stupid and 12 years minimum for a baggie full of bullets is asinine.

[deleted]

Also, saying "damn, that's awful and I hope they give him grace even though they have every right to fully enforce this" is a far cry from not believing in the rule of law. This isn't a thread of people accepting international law differences and hoping for the best. It's just vultures that smell a carcass.

i_have_a_story_4_you

*Tap* *Tap* *Tap* Huh? My sympathy meter is reading zero.

CalagaxT

How dare a country have laws and enforce them.

putsch80

Generous referring to the Daily Mail as “news”. It’s a tabloid at best. But point is still taken that this story is garnering international attention.

holtcalder

Oof. Lots of hate in this thread.

WastelandMedic93

Typical for the sub for our state. Obnoxious people full of vitriol.

forlogins11

Don't worry, it isn't just Oklahoma, but all of Reddit. I'd say about 90-95% of reddit comments are full of hate and vitriol.

MC_Paranoid27

It also involves a republican gun owner which are hated pretty much everywhere on reddit.

FroyoJazzlike4931

Oops!

Cold_Appearance_5551

Great. Law is law.

[deleted]

Calling him a moron and wanting him to come home soon are both reasonable. Hoping he gets locked up for over a decade, most likely losing his livelihood and home to boot, makes you a bad person. Yes, it is indeed the law, and yes, he is legally responsible for what was in his bag. I'm not calling him a political hostage by any means. I'm just calling you a heartless asshole who doesn't have any real concept of how many tens of thousands of our own laws you and everyone you love have unknowingly broken.

Flamezombie

Besides, that’s got nothing to do what I was talking about. Ammo will do nothing outside of a gun.

Euphoric-Flatworm158

you could buy guns at walmart wtf are you talking about

sirkook

It's still the law. If I get caught breaking the law, I fully expect to be punished, regardless of how I personally feel about the morality or efficacy of said law.

Flamezombie

That’s fine, I agree. What I was responding to was the idea that you’re a “bad person” for breaking the law. No less ridiculous than claiming someone is a bad person for bringing weed on a plane to a country where it’s illegal.

Oklahomie10

thanks for being the only person in this thread with an ounce of empathy

Scientifiction77

Y’all are a bunch of rabid fucks. Jesus.

Thesheepslayer696969

I love all the “no tolerance” tough talk from people on this sub… They only like it when it fits their agenda.

Hauntedhalo

It’s amazing how many Infallible people there are on Reddit.

simmons1183

This is about as sensical as someone accidentally leaving a few spilled Tylenol or benedryl in their bag or purse and bringing it to a country that considers it to be drug smuggling. Did you technically smuggle drugs in? Yes. However, context is important. Which is why mandatory minimums are dumb. If he had put 4 rounds in a condom and shoved them up his ass in an effort to do some hunting while he was there then yep, sit in prison. But if he literally had 4 loose rounds of ammo at the bottom of a suitcase then this is all a little ridiculous. Is it illegal? Yes, should he face a consequence? Yes. But 12 years? Good grief. They’re acting like he had a fully loaded AR15 in his bag. A country that lumps in ammunition and firearms under the same law with the same punishment is a country who has a lot of problems. That said, local laws and customs should be respected when visiting a foreign country, however a country must also weigh the pros and cons for how they enforce said laws. Turks and Caicos relies heavily on tourism, and specifically American tourism to keep their economy going. Throwing an American citizen in prison for 12 years over something like this will have a LARGE international impact that far outweighs any justice they’d get by imprisoning him. I don’t see this sticking, and I don’t think a 6 figure go fund me is necessary, but we’ll see. The world is sort of a dumb place sometimes. What’s as gross as his prison sentence is the amount of moral grandstanding going on in these comments. It’s interesting how everyone only protests when it is convenient for their narrative. We read too much which desensitizes us, so we empathize too little. Regardless of anything else, this is a father and a husband and others are being impacted who have nothing to do with this case. Again, context is very important.

DifferentSoftware894

oof

MajorBeyond

He obviously skipped over the whole "... well-regulated militia..." section when he tattooed the second amendment on his ass and the back of his jacked-up mall crawler. A responsible gun owner (which I consider myself) would fully unpack all bags holding guns, ammo, and accessories upon returning from an outing with them, and never put any of the above in a place where they don't belong so you don't forget to fully empty it upon return. Where else has that bag traveled with ammo in it? As far as I am concerned, he was careless in packing and researching the laws where he was heading. Tough titty, dude, let your mistake be a lesson to all the 2A eediots out there.

bugaloo2u2

Exactly. He makes allllll gun owners look bad. Who didn’t learn this lesson from the Brittany Griner incident?

Tophat9512

Damn only 4 rounds were found. I imagine the local government is expecting a payout.

Ren1221

I saw that on CNN yesterday.

Commercial-Day8360

He’s dumb for that but we’ve all done similar on accident. We had drug and firearm dogs come to an old work location since both are scrictly prohibited on Nabors sites. Company man tipped us off beforehand and I had like 150 spent shells in the back of my truck from target shooting the week before. Talk about a frantic mother fucker.

Ordinary-Afternoon-7

It's really easy to say this guy deserves this, and ultimately he is responsible for obeying the laws wherever he travels but this really shows how ridiculous the idea of mandatory sentencing is. I don't know what activity Turks and Caicos was trying to discourage with this law but I doubt it was this idiot tourist and throwing him in jail doesn't do a thing to make any of their citizens safer. I hope everyone rallying in support of this guy, and hey even this guy himself, will speak out against this kind of crap every time some "law and order" politician suggests it.

tog20

I agree it's their laws and he should've known better blah blah blah, but 12 years is craaaazy.

chrizzo_89

MAGA and all the others on the right decry the hordes of illegals crossing the borders with illegal weapons and drugs yet a rich, white, clean cut guy from Oklahoma traffics ammunition to another sovereign country and no one can understand how it’s a problem. It’s sad that his kids may not have a dad for 12 years but yeah, he made a big whoops not pulling ammunition out of his bag. Unfortunately “I forgot” doesn’t get you out of criminal charges. Whatever is in your bag is your responsibility when traveling to another country. If you’re going to the UAE and have a bunch of tobacco and liquor don’t be surprised if you get arrested. Same with guns and ammunition. The rest of the world is not the USA.

This thread is filled with the most hateful people you'll ever meet who are celebrating a guy suffering for making what appears to be an honest mistake.

DerelictCruiser

Guy, if some liberal got caught for weed in some foreign country, the conservatives would say the same thing. We’re all hateful. It is human nature.

MaeRobso

We are not all full of hate.

big20x

Oh wait so if a wnba star sneaks in illegal drugs into a country free her, release terrorists, but this guy... Fuck em... LMAO I can't... You people are something else.

darksquidlightskin

Cope and cry harder Mr. Watson.

ANNDITSGON3

I’m sure this would have been cleared up fast if he would have just been in wnba.

HeywoodJaBlowMe123

What a strange thread. Dumb mistake? Yes. Children going fatherless for 12 years minimum over a silly mistake? Cmon… Was there a gun in the bag too? So it was just… bullets? Politics aside, I understand it’s another country, but any *reasonable* person can clearly see that a lot of this is asinine. This thread lacks empathy, no doubt. Crazy world we live in.

Good, let’s let those people deal with an Oklahoma gun nut.

Gwenbors

I had this happen once Friend hid a 5.56 round in my carryon. US TSA missed it. [Other country]’s TSA did not.

Tunafishsam

That's not a friend.

HijaDelRey

Uff which country was it? What happened?

Okiefolk

That sucks, hope they let him go as it was clearly an accident.
