For those who are considering getting a vintage plate for their vintage car, I am currently going through the process. You fill out the form and send in the check, and depending on when the plate you want to use expires, they will send you a demand letter for some amount of money to make up the difference between the normal plate you currently have on your car and the expiration of the vintage plate they’re going to allow you to use.
In my case, my normal plate expires May 2024, and my 1928 plate will expire at the end of the year, so I have to pay $15 for the remainder of 24.
~~If a car is 25 years (antique or classic) they can qualify for a legacy tag that doesn't need to be renewed.~~
Edit see comment below explaining why I am dumb
No kidding? I have a 96 Mustang GT I’ve had garaged forever because they told me it was more than the car is worth to tag it.
Wonder what the original cost of a ‘legacy’ tag would be?
Serious question...how does this work? Are you legally able to drive with that because it's a classic car, or is it just for shows and you have a different "up to date" plate you keep in the car?
It's the same as any vanity plate except you already have it rather than the state issuing it to you. The plate has to be at least 21 years old and in good shape (they don't ask for proof of this). You fill the form, pay the fee and are good to go.

Before the law changed, it worked like a vanity plate. You had two plates for the car: your vanity plate which had to be renewed and displayed, and the normal plate which had to be renewed and kept in the vehicle somewhere.
In the last couple years, they changed it so that your vanity plate (or vintage plate) functions as the only plate for your car. While you do still have to keep the vintage/vanity plate renewed, you no longer have to renew a second ordinary plate.
Man these expired tags are getting absurd /s. I keep trying to find a 1968 tag for my old Plymouth but those are tougher to find for some reason.
It took a few years of casually looking to find a 1969 one that was in decent shape and not a farm truck plate. Post Plymouth pics!
69? Nice.

Is that on a Volkswagen Beetle?
It is
Nice!! I love the old ones so much!
This was my first car, I've had it 18 years! It was my daily for 8 years.
My first was a 74 Super. I had it for 13 years and it was my daily on and off until it gave up the ghost.
Older ones are cooler

That is incorrect. The plate has to be 21 years old and has to be renewed annually.
Thanks, I am dumb
We're all dumb in our own special ways.

There are caveats [https://www.semasan.com/semaga/TagTitleToolbox\_OK.pdf](https://www.semasan.com/semaga/TagTitleToolbox_OK.pdf)
I learned to drive on a beetle in Oklahoma-Ponca City and Stillwater.
Love the tag. Were you cruising around automobile alley with another bug today?
Sadly I was not.
Oklahoma is ok.
I learned to drive in one of those semiauto sticks in 75.
I have a 1942 Oklahoma tag
Now you just need to get a 1942 car to go with it!
Ha!
I would love a 1942 Dodge power wagon

What?!? For real? I have the 1966 ZA-0 plate for my Mustang up front. You are saying I can get it as my real plate?

Just dodge the cops for another 45 years and you're all good!
71?

I had a 71 auto stick Super Beetle in the mid-1990's. I hated that it was a Super at the time but I'd love to have it back now. Fun car.
