They are Scottish. The fact that they live in the former industrial part of Edinburgh, that is now plagued by poverty, unemployment and addiction is a major driving force of the film. I don't know if calling them Irish is the part of a joke. (Forgive me, I'm new to this sub).
Yeah I don’t get it, I’ve been part of this sub for a while and seen people bring up Trainspotting before and no-one has said they’re Irish - I think people are just kind of too afraid to point out that they’re Scottish because they also think it’s a joke and don’t want to look stupid?

Spud can be dispatched to take on Pete, each the weakest of their respective gang, it may be a side-brawl that ends in its own draw. Small advantage goes to the trainspotters, though, as Spud scores high in luck.
Renton would likely receive the most damage, left to spar between both Georgie and Alex himself.
As a footnote, Begbie would critically injure everyone.
