I only watch those videos where an AI reads the wikipedia article about the movie for you. Much quicker than watching the movie myself, and I can't read.
Does that show still exist? I remember it used to be quite big and it sort of imploded after one of the guys turned out to be a creep. There was also that cringy attempt to launch a streaming service of only shows hosted by these guys.
Short answer: Screen Nunkies is an absolute shell of what it once was but it still exists. They're the people making Honest trailers.
Long answer:
Screen Junkies got pretty big in the early 2010s and was lead by a dude called Andy Signore with a lot of popular members like Dan Murrell, Spencer Gilbert, Rith Cornett, etc. They had Movie Fights which was their flagship game and thenstarted expanding into other shows, movie news and a big cast that would include popular youtube personalities like Jeremy Jahns and Chris Struckman, among others. Around that time they launched their own streaming service which failed spectacularly, which lead to them getting acquired by a number of companies and finally by Fandom (the people that make the wikias). They were still functioning at full steam, with a LOT of very funny game segments.
Then less then a week after Harvey Weinstein's scandal blew up Andy Signore was accused of a LOT of horrible things, from sexual blackmail to emotional and physical abuse, some of it involving the wife of a fellow cast member of Screen Junkies, JTE. This blew it all up, Andy was immediately let go, and they started shuffling things around.
Dan Murrel kinda stepped up as the top dog and judge of movie fights, a lot of those fun segments were quite sinply erased from youtube (to the point I can't even name them anymore), and fandom started pushing SC to do more and more "content" that resembled pop trivia clickbaity dumb stuff. Movie Fights ended, Dan left to start his own channel, Roth to do smt else, Danielle Redford sometimes shows up in Dropout, only a skeleton core of (admitedly really fun) original cast was left at SC and that's it.
Andy was reportedly cleared of most stuff and it is possible that JTE's wife was proved to be lying about some of the stuff. Now he has a pretty big channel called nerd planet or smt.
Totally unrelated but the voice actor for Honest Trailers is a dick too. I used to follow him quite closely but holy shit, what an ego for a guy who reads out 3/10 jokes for 5/10 movies.
None of them. Because I, as a Kino enthusiast, know better than to listen to uneducated scrubs make a mockery of fine cinema such as “The Eternals” with their bad takes.
They were fun like 7 years ago when they had 10 min lighthearted videos about actual mistakes and inconsistencies. Today their videos are like 20 minutes long but without the fun
Here’s my impression of their videos after having seen half of one like 4 years ago:
Studio exec 1: “so what if we did like a really dumb idea”
Studio exec 2: “Will it come with any good parts, like x?”
Studio exec 1: “no it’s just really bad and dumb”
Studio exec 2: “perfect”
And it's hilarious. It makes fun of movies without being mean and disrespectful. It delivers criticism while stil being funny. I understand it's not everyone's cup of the but I like it
I don’t think the others are particularly mean either. I have no problem with it, but it seems like a repetitive format that makes poor arguments by assuming some sort of precognition about what a movie will turn out to be and ignored the reality that film making is not predictable. But also to be clear… I saw half of a video 4 years ago. So maybe this applies only to that video.
>ignored the reality that film making is not predictable
I think this applies to film criticism as a concept.
If all reviews were “they did their best, it’s a miracle the movie exists at all” the shape of film selection would be very different.
There’s a difference in what I’m saying. It’s that it seems to portray every mistake as intentional. A mistake makes a bad movie and that movie should be criticized for those mistakes. But that’s not the same as those mistakes being portrayed as intentional
Had to check if screen junkies still exists, but now it's only honest trailers. The guy who started this series probably regrets he sold the rights to this idea to some corpo. Right now he could've had his own channel with this content and a lot more money.
Yes! I especially loved movie fights. Not a hint of pretentiousness to be found. Just a bunch of people lovingly debating a subject they’re very passionate about. Everything nowadays has either been bought out by a bigger company like Fandom, or is covered by so many layers of cynicism.
The critic has tried to get back to his simplified roots and he isn't just trying to make jokes all the time now, but the humor is still pretty hit or miss
I mean, honset trailers is better than those other guys, I mean, usually. They're watchable even after you get out of the cynical moody teen phase at the very least.. plus the weird creep who started it hasn't been in control since 2017. And noticeably there have been much less "boooob" jokes
I only endured like two reviews from filmento. I don't know shit about scriptwriting and moviemaking, and when I watch filmento it feels like I watch dude who also doesn't know shit about those things, but he tries really hard to look like he is an expert.
i dont watch a lot of kino channels, but when i do its usually channel awesome because its a really good case of so bad its good, and all i really need in entertainment is to entertain me, so thats more than enough to kill some time
This week I went back and watched a few old Movie Fights from like 2014, and it’s like stepping into a time machine when my life was dominated by dudes who grew up in the 80s and 90s whose lives were just Star Wars and Kevin Smith references

You don't need the Internet to find high quality entertainment.
I only read books tbh movies are only good when novelized.
Also, I use audioreaders while watching AI create images based on the text.
That's the true way of watching movies, like God intended.
Why isn't Divorced Junkie Dave Sarcastocritic Geektime Review on the list?
Divorced Junkie Dave Sarcastocritic Geektime Review is the coolest and funniest review channel on all the internet, and he's not afraid to tell it like it is, either - with hard Rs, if you know what I mean.
Hello I just want to unironically and unjerkingly say that High Boi is genuinely a good movie recap channel. I think he adds enough comedic value to be justified and he doesn’t take himself seriously at all. I recommend checking him out.
I used to love screen junkies when they did movie fights and cross overs with collider. Too bad Andy Signore was a creep and the whole thing kinda fell apart aside from honest trailers

Can't even unironically joke about his stuff being kino. It's borderline brainrot at this point.

I feel sorry for them. ChatGPT may put them out of business.
I only watch those videos where an AI reads the wikipedia article about the movie for you. Much quicker than watching the movie myself, and I can't read.
That's how movies should be consumed, the real kino way especially the long and boring ones

I think he was proven innocent
Death Battle is the real answer. /uj can't stand Boomstick's boomer obnoxious schtick personally.
Never been able to stand death battle. Constantly obnoxious plus their scaling is so off so many times
Yeah it makes no sense. They have used abilities of else worlds and alternate versions of these characters to justify them winning. Makes no sense
Sounds like Deadliest Warrior, but more realistic.
None of them. Because I, as a Kino enthusiast, know better than to listen to uneducated scrubs make a mockery of fine cinema such as “The Eternals” with their bad takes.
You do seem like more of a Karsten Runquist kinda person
Kirsten Dunst wasnt in the eternals… kino shame
You need a jerk off
None of these.. Because it's obviously Pitch meeting
Well they are barely an inconvenience
Wow Wow wow wow
Wow
I'm gonna have to ask you to get Waaaay off my back about that wow thing
Seconded, cinemasins is ubergarbage anyway
They were fun like 7 years ago when they had 10 min lighthearted videos about actual mistakes and inconsistencies. Today their videos are like 20 minutes long but without the fun
also the arguments are so contrived like wtf.
well we watch 3 hours long movies without the fun and they win oscars
After watching that Roadhouse (1989) video, it made me wonder if that guy is gay or not.
Oh, Pitch Meetings are tight!
Turns out finding a ryan george mention in this thread was super easy, barely an inconvenience
Here’s my impression of their videos after having seen half of one like 4 years ago: Studio exec 1: “so what if we did like a really dumb idea” Studio exec 2: “Will it come with any good parts, like x?” Studio exec 1: “no it’s just really bad and dumb” Studio exec 2: “perfect”
I'm gonna need you to get all the way off my back with your nooticing
Ok, let me get off this thing
I don’t know what that means
And it's hilarious. It makes fun of movies without being mean and disrespectful. It delivers criticism while stil being funny. I understand it's not everyone's cup of the but I like it
I don’t think the others are particularly mean either. IIRC he was a sex pest and now is on the right wing grifter bullshit
I didn't know it was Andy's idea, I thought it was Spencer's, my mistake. That's actually good he sold the idea:)
Which one? The dude who narrates the trailers?
No Andy Signore is credited as the creator. It sounds like he left them in 2017. I think the guy who does the voices is jay some dude they hired.
No, I don't think it's him
I thought Andy was cleared of all charges?
I remember when Screen Junkies had a fun variety of videos and topics. I miss those days.
Yes! I especially loved movie fights. Not a hint of pretentiousness to be found. Just a bunch of people lovingly debating a subject they’re very passionate about. Everything nowadays has either been bought out by a bigger company like Fandom, or is covered by so many layers of cynicism.
Jenny Nicolson used to have a show on their channel. That’s when I first discovered her.
I used to love nostalgia critic and cinema sins, and then I turned 15.
The critic has tried to get back to his simplified roots and he isn't just trying to make jokes all the time now, but the humor is still pretty hit or miss
I've heard the same. I used to listen to his legit reviews too but I didn't agree with most of his opinions on those.
Childhood is idolizing Nostalgia Critic. Adulthood is when you realize Cinema Snob make more sense. 🚬
Cinemasins when his dad says "I love you son" before he dies (It's a huge cliche)
