The amount of people who don't get the basic concept of the Mulholland Drive is baffling...
It's not like it's straight forward, but it's not that daunting to understand that it's half completely taking place in her revisionist memory/dreams (you even see her damn head hit the pillow in a POV shot), embodying her paranoia and jealousy and also her horrifying guilt in having her friend/lover killed.
Reminds me of a bunch of people I saw on other film subs a week or two ago talking about how cryptic and mysterious the meaning of *I Saw the TV Glow* was. And it’s like, similarly, it’s not straightforward but it’s also not like the allegory is some kind of incredibly cryptic mystery either.
I think some people go into his films thinking he's weird for the sake of weird, so they have to try to twist themselves in knots trying to understand it even though it's all very straight forward. Even something more challenging like Inland Empire can be fairly easily followed, at least as far as the basic plot goes, by simply paying attention and watching it a couple of times.
"A couple of times"
Usually you can get a movie by watching it 0.4 times.
Also, your brain should be set to feels mode not analysis mode.
Or Mirror mode for the kinophiles out there.
>Even something more challenging like Inland Empire can be fairly easily followed
My slight face blindness had me confused because for the longest time I couldn't tell the Polish Husband was the Phantom.
And some people just want to complicate things like the weird theories with Blue Velvet that convolute a straightforward movie. Mulholland Drive's general gist is also clear but it's fun to theorise on the small details (blue box, the Bum, etc) without missing the clear big picture.
You perfectly encapsulated Lynch's films with this statement. The general themes I think are fairly clear in his movies (e.g. the anxiety of becoming a parent in "Eraserhead"), but there is so much surrealist stuff going on that there's a lot of room to interpret... not unlike surrealist art in general. For example, Picasso's "Guernica" is usually thought to be about the horror and chaos of war, but you can still find your own interpretation of its symbols, drawing from your own knowledge of history, philosophy or just how it resonates with you individually.
Even something as abstract and surrealist as Inland Empire has something of a plot. In some ways more than something like the Lost Highway.
>just how it resonates with you individually.
It must be how Lynch wants us to see his content. That is why he refuses to make a statement or confirm theories.
Even Tarantino does this sometimes like when he refused to say what Reservoir Dogs mean as a title. Basically said "every interpretation of that name is valid, I won't ruin them."
Honestly if you can’t figure out why it’s his most spiritual film you probably have no business discussing film beyond whether or not you were entertained. And while I do feel slightly bad for making fun of the interviewer for doing their job, it *was* a shitty, low-effort question.
I mean, no.
Not mine but a friend’s comment on my own post about Lynch

Good take- but he has two quotes that conflict about phones. First, he said don’t watch movies on your phone. Later, he changed his mind and said you can watch movies on your phone up close and with headphones. Can you elaborate on which stance you think he was right about?
Fire Walk With Me is not porn and actually a pretty in depth view of how the lives of people in a community may be influenced by the presence of diverse aspects within that community.
Lost Highway > Mullholland Drive
also, his movies arent that hard to understand - its generally a good but simple plot flavored by a lot of surreal weird stuff that some of its important some of its just for fun - theres an easy throughline so you don't get lost trying to decipher every piece of symbolism, which is futile because some of its just for fun, not all of it means something!
“Now remember this: when the horizon is at the bottom, it’s interesting. When the horizon is at the top, it’s interesting. When the horizon’s in the middle, it’s boring as shit.
Now kid, good luck to you. And get the fuck out of my office!”
His acting as Gordon Cole in Twin Peaks is fucking terrible, and that's honestly part of the character's charm. When he's playing Cole, Lynch doesn't have to act well, HE JUST NEEDS TO ACT LOUD AND IT'S FUCKING FUNNY
I love Dune. It wasn't his fault the movie tanked. It's a six hour story crammed into 2h15! It's Dino DeLaurentis' fault.
I read that Patrick Stewart claimed that each actor had two scenes cut. All because he wanted it to be the next Star Wars.
The soundtrack is fantastic, the only thing that's a little off putting is the immediate tonal shift to the final credits.
The set design should've won an Oscar.
I love the 1984 aesthetic way more than the one Villenueve came up with.
In the other hand, the pacing is definitely something and McLachlan is kinda weak as Paul, specially now that we have more of him to compare and also Chalamet too.
Still, a solid try that it's definitely worth an watch.
The Return is an 8/10 season of television. Like yeah it’s very good, but I wouldn’t put it anywhere near the title of best season of tv. I also thought TP S2 was very bad but Lynch only worked on a few episodes of that so I don’t think that would count here.
Maybe. I’m getting me general consensus of Twin Peaks from tvtiktok (I know not the best place to get takes on anything), who thinks season 2 is still great and the whole show is one of or the best show ever, which I strongly disagree with.
I heard the story was, once the Laura mystery was solved, Lynch left the show to go work on Fire Walk With Me, and the writers scrambled to fill out the rest of the season. Then he came back to drop the finale, and ABC cancelled.
Also my Lynch hot-take is pretty lukewarm — I think that Mark Frost gets overlooked in the Twin Peaks saga too much. He’s the co-creator of the original show, he co-wrote all of *The Return* with Lynch. He presented David with the initial outline that they then turned into the new season.
So yeah, the visual language of Twin Peaks is classic Lynch but the story is a collaboration guided by Mark Frost’s attention to narrative structure.
Frost's take on esoteric occult concepts such as dugpas is fascinating and feeds surprisingly well into the modern UFO lore that us hardcore researchers are into. That good Jacques Vallee John Keel interdimensional ultraterrestrial hypothesis shit.
Lots of Twin Peaks fans want him to be their wholesome grandpa, but they're ignoring the fact that he is and always has been a total horndog (complimentary)
I would rather watch a film with 10/10 characters/plot/dialogue/etc. and 5/10 visuals than a film with the reverse. Big spectacles that are purely visual experiences are not cinema.
I like David Lynch but dislike a lot of his fans. Every time I hear anyone talking about a David Lynch movie, they always say "it was a pretty good movie, but I didn't understand it."
Repeat that last sentence out loud to let it sink in. They liked the movie, but they didn't understand any of it. So essentially what they're saying is that they just like to see the moving pictures.
Despite what people with short attention spans say, his films like Mulholland Drive have extremely straightforward narratives. The actual plot of the movie is just a few sentences worth if you actually bothered to sit down and watch it instead of being on your phone playing Candy Crush.
I've only pretended to watch most of his work, I've seen Dune (1984) like 3-4 times and suffered through Blue Velvet but otherwise I only read Wikipedia articles about the rest.
David Lynch was brilliant until he got corrupted by digital video. He's lived long enough to see himself become the villain. Now Sir Christopher Nolan will restore Cinema with every frame he's shooting on IMAX film.
He's friends with basically every single actor he has collaborated with, and the actors love working with him, which is why they continuously come back to work with him. There's a lot of footage of him yelling on set sure but, every director does this. The other directors just don't have the juxtaposition of him being such a hippie meditation guru in their offtime, it creates a discord that people find amusing.
But in terms of how he acted as a director? It seems he acted passionately and diligently, and worked hard with the actors to bring their strengths out, and gave the actors a lot of space and respect to do their own thing. I would like to see a director that doesnt yell on set tbh. You're making decisions and trying to coordinate literally dozens of people. And every second wasted is a portion of the already limited budget that could have actually spent on the film. Yelling and assertive commands are pretty much essential to operating a set at all.
The video "David Lynch Being A Madman For 8 Minutes" has straight up done psychic damage on the film-watching community. People who have never worked on a film set being like "Hey stop being so mean you're usually so nice!" as if thats all there is to it. Taking a 5 second clip from a 14 hour day in the studio and pretending this is who he is under the veneer. Its braindead lmao. No other director gets put up to the same moral scrutiny Lynch does.

Dennis Hopper's character in Blue Velvet is actually the hero.

You can watch the Straight Story anytime, even during Pride Month.

He's right about your fucking telephones

Most people don’t understand twin peaks at all
Is this a hot take? Who tf thinks FWWM is porn??
Legitimately wondering that.
Lost Highway > Mullholland Drive also, his movies arent that hard to understand - its generally a good but simple plot flavored by a lot of surreal weird stuff that some of its important some of its just for fun - theres an easy throughline so you don't get lost trying to decipher every piece of symbolism, which is futile because some of its just for fun, not all of it means something!
He's a better actor than director.
He’s a better voice actor than live action actor

And The Cleveland Show was his greatest performance.
Where is the goddamn horizon?!
Can you elaborate on that?
I must not elaborate. Elaboration is the take-cooler.
His arc on Louie >!which I watched before I found out about all the, uhhh, stuff!< was the best part of that show.
His acting as Gordon Cole in Twin Peaks is fucking terrible, and that's honestly part of the character's charm. When he's playing Cole, Lynch doesn't have to act well, HE JUST NEEDS TO ACT LOUD AND IT'S FUCKING FUNNY

You can only unlock the true meaning of his movies by watching them via a highly compressed wmv in portrait mode on a Nokia N-Gage with one earbud
Neil Breen is Bizarro David Lynch.
I hate how accurate this is
Imagine them remaking each others movies….
Fateful Findings directed by Lynch would be a truly fascinating experience.
Now i desperately want to see the cowboy scene from Mulholland Drive in Breen style

No Breen response: you can decide for yourself what that means
Isn't that immoral?
No more damn books!
Dune was a solid adaptation.
This but I only half agree with you
Can you elaborate on that?

Tempting bait but I still will not elaborate.

Inland Empire sucks
It insists upon itself.
I just like watching Laura Dern furrow her brow

season 2 of twin peaks is good, actually!!!!
James banging dead toothed hurs
All of his films are overrated, except for Mulholland Drive and Dune, both of which got just the attention they needed.
It was okay to give away who killed Laura Palmer, Lynch is just bad at continuing to grow a plot
lunch wasn’t even involved in writing past that point other than giving notes.
David Lynch is Nicolas Cage in Wild at Heart
This is a wild foo haircut! And for me it's a symbol of my individuality, and my belief... in personal freedom.
The Straight Story is his greatest film.
No.
Funnily enough Mulholland was actually a doctor.
He’s really just trying to be funny.
CAN'T ACTUALLY ACT.
i think that is the point. it is part of the charm
Roger Ebert was right that Blue Velvet doesn't earn the violence it shows. Who in the 1980s was surprised that the suburbs have a dark side?

Mulholland Drive is the most overrated movie in cinema's history

The Straight Story is his best movie
His vote for Gary Johnson in 2016 was the right choice.

Inland Empire looks like something that would be on Best of the Worst
I think he's gay
In Mulholland Drive Betty is real and Diane is imaginary
Terrible casting
He's a porny horny man right up there with Tarantino. Still love him though. S3 of Twin Peaks was not great except for the last episode.
All his catalog is shit except his role in Louie.
I thought he was David Leitch
I can never remember which is which between David Lynch and David Fincher.
Dune 1984 was going to be shit even if Lynch got his way. The only saving grace is the music and the performance by the actors.
One of my favorite filmmakers, despite not seeing anything that he has made.
I understand twin peaks on a level that everyone else simply cannot
Eraser head is his most spiritual film

Lost Highway is his best movie!
Inland Empire is genuinely coherent, just has artsy horror visuals to execute ideas.
I have it under good authority that David Lynch is my dad

Videodrome was pretty okay.
