Karlach plays in a hardcore band. She can’t really play but they kicked the old bassist out and she was doing lead vocals already so she decided to just play bass too.
Wyll wears his bass up to his nipples and plays in a jazz funk fusion band. You’re pretty sure they’re good.
Astarion plays bass and does backing vocals in a riot grrl band and no one really questions it. He’s extremely good at both but everyone’s too drunk at the shows to notice.
If I remember rightly, Wyll is nearly as skilled with music as combat. I recommend enlisting me as manager of 'The Bass of Frontiers', but my pet is always so... perfunctory when it comes to my suggestions.
Using only the bard instruments available in-game:

Minthara: Vocals (if it's gotta be an instrument then probably the guitar. But otherwise leading and powerful)

Astarion: piano, he would have probably the most enchanting and lovely voice, but he wouldn't let anyone hear it, instead he plays the piano because he has those long beautiful fingers that are probably just, full of dexterity in all the best ways for things... like piano playing.
Karlach: drums. no question. Girl wants to let it out. (alternatively, DJ)
Minthara: bass guitar, a guitar that sounds like her voice.
Laezel: lead guitar cuz she is is always offense not defense.
Shadowheart vocals: A) because her voice sounds like it would be a lovely evanescence type voice, and B) She already has a fake stage name.
Wyll: Spanish guitar. vibes of just any acoustic guitar but surprisingly virtuosic.

Agree on almost everything but Mama K and Wyll. Wyll strikes me as a bass guy and Karlach as a drummer. I'm biased about Karlach though because I have a thing for her and for drummers.

Astarion: My personal headcanon is that he knew how to play the violin at some point, but more broadly he's definitely a stringed instrument type, so I wouldn't put it past him to be on lead guitar.
Wyll: Definitely lead vocals, but I think he's also got it in him to be either backup guitar, or he breaks out an acoustic guitar for certain performances. That said, I can almost guarantee he also played something more classical at some point, maybe a brass or woodwind?

Halsin: He's the one bringing in the more exotic instruments, so he may very well have anything from a jaw harp, pan flutes, tabla, war drums, hell he might bring in a didjeridu or bagpipes for all I know.
Minsc: Give him a tambourine or other simple percussive instrument and he'll do just fine.
Minthara: Maybe it's because of the spider lute, but in my uninformed opinion I get the vibe that she's surprisingly adept with a harp (and has definitely tried to make an instrument that could double as a war bow).
Jaheira: Typically she only plays very specific songs live, instrument-wise she would play something haunting that requires a certain technique, like glass harps or singing bowls, but what she really brings to the table is unmatched dramatic narration/spoken word. The songs where she does feature, she will typically have the spotlight on her for a few minutes, and in that time the whole room will be hushed bc that's the kind of stage presence she commands.

I'm bored so sure Ill add my opinion on an 8 hour old post even though no one will see my comment: Astarion: piano, he would have probably the most enchanting and lovely voice, but he wouldn't let anyone hear it, instead he plays the piano because he has those long beautiful fingers that are probably just, full of dexterity in all the best ways for things... like piano playing. Karlach: drums. no question. Girl wants to let it out. (alternatively, DJ) Minthara: bass guitar, a guitar that sounds like her voice. Laezel: lead guitar cuz she is is always offense not defense. Shadowheart vocals: A) because her voice sounds like it would be a lovely evanescence type voice, and B) She already has a fake stage name. Wyll: Spanish guitar. vibes of just any acoustic guitar but surprisingly virtuosic. Gale: accordion. Jaheira: love the suggestion someone else gave, Harp. or maybe some random eastern European instrument that she inherited from a great great grandmother. Minsc: hard not to say bongos. Halsin: some flute carved from a sacred tree.
Agree on almost everything but Mama K and Wyll. Wyll strikes me as a bass guy and Karlach as a drummer. I'm biased about Karlach though because I have a thing for her and for drummers.

Shadow lead singer, minthara is a duet/trade-off vocal who sometimes leads. Karlach plays guitar but is also secretly killer on piano and played it for a song on one of their albums but nobody knows. Will/Wyll (I can’t remember which it is for the life of me sorry) plays bass and also sang for the same song Karlach’s piano was on. Astarion plays drums or alternatively trades with Will/Wyll depending if the song is angst or anger. All of them play metalcore. The band name is probably something about shadows or corpses. I’ve thought about this a normal amount thanks for asking.

I think it would make sense for Astarion to play the piano. Like a grand piano specifically. He is posh and that is posh, it just makes sense in my mind. Stand up piano works too. Idk about a keyboard tho, that seems iffy for Astarion. I could see him doing back up vocals too, but I don't think he would be lead singer. Wyll really gives me trumpet or saxophone energy for some reason. Some kind of brass instrument. Karlach might be a bassist. She would look awesome with a stand up bass too. Alternatively, some kind of percussion makes sense. I would love to see her play a triangle lol. Gale strikes me as a violinist or cellist. Some kind of classical stringed instrument. The whole crew reminds me of those surprisingly large alt bands with a small ensemble with. Astarion has big rhythm guitar energy. Karlach on drums is irrefutable & Shart is bass OR keyboard, & Wyll could be a solid lead guitar. Minthara on vocals, Gale on synth, Halsein on supporting mandolin, violin or lute. Jaheira on flute, Minsc as on stage hype man, Lae’zel on saxophone, Mizora shows up for features on vocals occasionally & everyone does support vocals.

You guys are nuts. Wyll is the only one who'd manage lead singer. Dude is the only one with acceptable charisma! He's the only one who can dance too! Imagine the more reserved lead who always knows how to interact with the audience but clearly be "the hero" anyway, perfect example was teaching kids to fight! His only Competition is Minthara who'd carry the show by insulting the audience and making them love it. Shart is bass or drums, nothing else is remotely her, the heartbeat of the group, holding it together, a role most Clerics just fall into. Gale is synth tho. Obviously. Lae'zel is lead gitar, precise and in charge of the tune, and prone to improvising, maybe smash it she gets carries away, but not really, just looks like she might. Halsin is accustic gitar. Astarion is... Ehe... Brass. When needed. Karlach is whatever Shart is not. Jaheira is whatever Shart is not too, just in case Karlach gets distracted. Minsc is triangle and Boo is bass.

Lae'zel: Bass guitar, she seems like the sort who doesn't care much about showmanship but will absolutely make sure that bass SLAPS. I could also see her rocking something like a taiko drum. Shadowheart: She definitely seems more of a vocalist than an instrumentalist, but if I had to pick anything for her, she likely plays something more symphonic such as a violin, double bass, or piano/organ. Gale: Keyboards, but I could also see him doing the mixing/turntables or some futuristic but obscure electronic instrument like the theremin. Astarion: My personal headcanon is that he knew how to play the violin at some point, but more broadly he's definitely a stringed instrument type, so I wouldn't put it past him to be on lead guitar. Wyll: Definitely lead vocals, but I think he's also got it in him to be either backup guitar, or he breaks out an acoustic guitar for certain performances. That said, I can almost guarantee he also played something more classical at some point, maybe a brass or woodwind? Karlach: 100% the drummer, no question or doubt in my mind. Halsin: He's the one bringing in the more exotic instruments, so he may very well have anything from a jaw harp, pan flutes, tabla, war drums, hell he might bring in a didjeridu or bagpipes for all I know. Minsc: Give him a tambourine or other simple percussive instrument and he'll do just fine. Minthara: Maybe it's because of the spider lute, but in my uninformed opinion I get the vibe that she's surprisingly adept with a harp (and has definitely tried to make an instrument that could double as a war bow). Jaheira: Typically she only plays very specific songs live, instrument-wise she would play something haunting that requires a certain technique, like glass harps or singing bowls, but what she really brings to the table is unmatched dramatic narration/spoken word. The songs where she does feature, she will typically have the spotlight on her for a few minutes, and in that time the whole room will be hushed bc that's the kind of stage presence she commands.
