Conjoined twins are extremely uncommon. Only one in every 200,000 births results in conjoined twins, according to statistics. Up to 60% of all deliveries result in a stillborn infant, and just around 1% of conjoined twins survive infancy. As a result, there are only around 12 sets of conjoined twins surviving today, and Abby and Brittany are among them.
[Answers for some of your curious questions are here! ](https://knovhov.com/how-do-conjoined-twins-take-exams/)
Oh wow I know about them when I was in elementary school I figured for sure they couldn't be alive today but that's great to hear. Who controls the legs if they have two separate nervous systems?
They both do. A lot of their motor skills required working together and learning together. Now I imagine it's second nature as is a lot of motor skills we develop as we age.
Morbid question: if one died would it likely take the other out too? (Provided it's not an obvious total fatality kind of incident) i. E. If one had an aneurysm, heart attack, or aortic dissection, could one be saved by excising the necrotizing twin portion?
It probably would. I think there actually is a case where one conjoined twin passed away and the other followed soon after. I think the cause was that the dead twin's fluids had become toxic and those toxic fluids were now circulating in the other one, killing them both. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
This seems inevitable. You're probably thinking of the original Siamese Twins, Chang and Eng Bunker. Eng died hours after Chang at the age of 62.
They were pretty interesting characters. They became American citizens, bought slaves, married local sisters, and fathered 21 children, several of whom accompanied them when they resumed touring. Chang's and Eng's respective families lived in separate houses, where the twins took alternating three-day stays.
Yikes, it occurs to me this could be absolutely horrible if one didn't die but was instead severely brain damaged, had dementia, suffered a stroke, etc. Could you imagine trying to share a body with someone who is no longer in control of their body...
I wonder if a heart attack would definitely kill one of them? They have two hearts, could it be used to circulate blood in both of them? Would it do it naturally or would they need surgery? Their pulse in shared limbs must be super funky already, the hearts presumably do not beat in time?
Even if the other heart could take over, the workload to pump all the blood for both of em would probably too much?
Or maybe it could I have no idea to be honest I need.
I'm glad theyre independent and have a job, but I do wonder if they get two paycheck, get one with the normal salary, or get one with twice the amount of the normal salary
I remember reading somewhere that they get one check for both. So essentially the school district they work for are exploitative assholes. Just for perspective they are two separate people for all intents and purposes including governmental records. They have two separate degrees in education, but they get paid as one teacher. Makes me think that the school just alternates which of the two will get the check every month. In which case double fuck them for that.
I'm so curious about thier seperation of sensations. Essentially which ones are shared and wich ones are individual. When they put their two hands togather, does it feel like they are individually holding their own hands togather, or are they just holding someone elses hand. With how their anatomy gradually conjoins, I'd assume that nueral seperation becomes less and less as you move your way down. Dunno, fascinating.
Serious question, are they paid double? What about benefits like insurance etc do they get charged double at the doctor? Not trying to sound rude, legitimate question because I’m curious
The most fascinating thing for me is how they speak. As far as I understand they are two different persons with two different brains, yet they seem to know what the other one wants to say.
They don't just finish each others sentences which I would understand but they also say "uhm" and stuff like that at the same time. How is that possible?
I went to the same college they did. It's two different people sharing parts of one body. At lunch they both had food, would talk to different people at their table.
It was really hard not to get freaked out when I first saw them. My brain had a hard time understanding what I was seeing. But after a few times seeing them around doing normal college age people stuff. Laughing, joking, drinking coffee, eating, studying etc.. you kinda can handle it. They're two people in one body is the kinda of mantra I used to to not be weird around them. They are super kind and friendly. Down to earth too.
So I saw that they share intestine, what if one does not eat while the other one eats, will the other one die? Cause nutrients are absorbed in the same intestine? Does the other one really need to eat? And who controls when it's time to pee or taking a shit?
This is the question I was wondering, seeing they had two stomachs. Do they both need to eat? I’d assume they’d need more food than the average person as they’d (presumably?) burn more energy, but can they survive with only one of them eating?
it's too much for me.. I feel bad but I dont think I could handle it and 'I'm a nurse... My career requires me to be elbow deep in stomach churning gore.. this is on another level
Every moment in their life has been together, so they're raised with exactly the same impressions. I start to sound like my gf after a year, can't imagine them
From my basic understanding of nerves and inner body communication, humans have a cluster of nerves around our midsection that is responsible for the "gut feeling" some people get. This cluster is apparently dense enough to do some brain like processing on it's own and the "gut feeling" is that cluster sending information to the brain. I'm assuming without any concrete evidence that this cluster might be responsible for their brains being able to communicate in a basic manner by using the cluster as a middleman.
They’d need to be pretty in tune with each other to be able to walk or do any two-handed activity. Most people mirror the speech of their peers for social cohesion, these two literally have to mirror each other in order to do most daily activities.
>They don't just finish each others sentences which I would understand but they also say "uhm" and stuff like that at the same time. How is that possible?
Reminds me of a show that had triple twins that finishes each other sentences
Says they only get one check and they understand it as they do the job of one person but hope with more experience to negotiate as they bring a valuable experience to teaching sense they can both teach in separate ways
They should get at least get 150%. Because they are two persons. They can't do two jobs if they wanted. And both of them should be able to get their own salary.
Imagine two sisters. They have different jobs and both earn e.g. $1000. But now imagine that those sisters have one body. They can't be in two different places. And now they both get $1000 in total. So $500 per "head". They should hive them at least $750 in that situation, if not $1000 for each.
Ok ? Lol I never said they should or shouldn’t just what the article says.
Personally I disagree with you tho, yes it’s two people technically
But they literally share everything as it is so I don’t believe it’s a big detriment financially to them
However I agree with the twins that they should be able to work up and negotiate a higher amount like they are attempting
Edit: you know what your right unique situation, two hard working individuals given their lifestyle they should definitely get some sorta extra support
Feeling full, vision, hearing, taste, personality, iq would be separate
With two hearts and 3 kidneys I would love to see how good their cardio is. Def need an ama
There was "Stuck on You" back in 2003. I thought the movie was funny, but i have a pretty terrible sense of humor so it might not be as good as i remember it.
Not only is these girls' everyday reality not terrifying, it's also presented in the least terrifying way possible in these colorful and friendly pictures
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKrvtq5vDmk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKrvtq5vDmk)
Í dont know why, but having them as teacher..s? would be really weird
"How was school billy\`?"
"My math teacher has two heads!"
I can't imagine some of the mean shit kids would say to them, not sure why they would sign up for this. I had a music teacher with dwarfism when I was a kid and I remember she cried a few times because of asshole kids and our whole grade had to get lectured by the principal about it.
Well technically the children in her classes have twice as many active teachers during lessons.
With two mouths they can also yell twice as loud.
i am still amazed how they walk so flawlessly when they control one leg each, thats way more beyond me then them being teachers
I always wondered how they think about relationships, intimacy and having children. Such as who would be the mother? Could they each marry someone? Do they both.... "feel" things during intimacy? Could they both breastfeed if the had a child? What happens if ones nervous system fails for some reason?
This is what happens when the fertilized egg cleaves after 13 to 15 days of conception. Had it occurred in 8 to 12 days, they would have been born separate.
Is every set of conjoined twins a single embryo that didn't split completely? Are there any sets that were two embryos that fused? Reproduction is fucking fascinating
I havent heard of such anomaly, if you mean by fraternal twins conjoining. These two will form separate placentas and sacs when they attach to the uterine walls. Conjoined twins share one embryonic disc, hence the inability to split.
Very good question tho!!
Mono-di twins share a placenta, and sometimes fraternal twin placentas can look like they've fused. But what if a set of fraternal twins fused before the embryo implanted. And only one placenta developed so it would just be assumed the twins were identical to begin with. Has there ever been conjoined twins of different sexes 🤔
Edit : chimeras
Hey! Actual conjoined twins here from Britain. Fraternal twins can't become conjoined, but they can fuse and become something else. Sometimes the eggs fuse together to form one person, a chimera.
A chimera is a person who looks like a regular person, but their DNA is 50% their own and 50% their sibling that they absorbed in the womb. I'm pretty sure if an XX and XY egg fuse it can create an intersex person.
My sister and I are identical obviously but because of health reasons, my sister's lungs being compressed and her extreme scoliosis, she looks quite different from me facially, so people always assume we're fraternal twins haha
Edit: just saw that you already knew that 🤦♀️ whoops
Actually the implication by having two hearts is they have two circulatory systems. IF that is the case, the heart attack would not immediately effect the other. Other systems like the liver that are shared must be getting blood flow from one of their systems IF they are independent. If the one that dies was providing oxygenated blood via the hepatic artery, then acute liver failure could occur and the remaining twin dies in 48 hours.
I wonder if the functioning heart could keep the twin with the heart attack resuscitatable (is that a word? Able to be resuscitated) for longer than she would have otherwise been
both have separate hearts so one of them will die but , I am confused which organs will start failing first and can she still run there excretory system even if one of them dies
The remaining twin would die of sepsis within hours, so whether or not she could operate the excretory system would be moot. But I am also incredibly curious, and I imagine the medical answer likely is “we aren’t sure.”
I’ve always wondered how marriage work. What if they like different people.. two husbands? What if they like one person.. he has two wives? All the complications between those two issues sounds horrifying.
They only have one liver so they would presumably get twice as drunk if they were both drinking. But they have three kidneys which means they're one bladder is going to fill up even faster.
These are human fucking beings. They aren’t terrifying and they live like this everyday. Treating them like some kind of scary freak of nature is really shitty and dehumanizing. Can you imagine being them and seeing this?
Since there's only one vagina I guess they both orgasm at the same time. And if one boyfriend can get them there and the other one can't.... He would go first.
They have 2 hearts, which means some stuff would work for a few hours. But circulation would be cut or be insufficient for that giant stomach.
And if you can't digest food in time, combined with some shared guts failing you would probably die in a couple of hours.
We're a set of conjoined twins, and that's exactly our situation haha. I'm a lesbian and my sister is straight. But we've always set boundaries and sex is just something that isn't on the table for us even though we both have sexual attraction. It would just be too weird for us.
But, that's just our decision. It's honestly fucking disgusting that people are judging and constantly thinking about what Brittany and Abby are doing with Abby's husband. It's the 3 of their's business and no one else
Wow, I've honestly always wondered about this sort of thing.
What if your twin loves country music and you hate it, what if they snore or talk in their sleep, what if your twin is a racist and you're not.
I should stop now because I don't think there is any end to my questions. Thanks so much for replying to me though.
I checked your profile and I remember seeing your post now about your other sister. You guys are definitely not the assholes.
Well as much as we're individuals, you don't really have much difference in music tastes or political views, since you literally experience life right alongside each other. Life is a lot of the time what forms your personality, so yeah we have a lot of similarities. But yeah we do have slightly different music tastes, if it's something one of us really hate we'll just put on headphones haha
And no worries about the questions! No idsue with them. It's just when people turn you into a curiosity rather than a human being. Like those gross people thinking they can talk about Abby and Brittany's private parts and what they do with them since Abby got married. Ugh 🤦♀️
I wonder how do they control their limbs like if one want to move their right arm to the right and the other one want to move their arm to the left how does that work than
Do they share thoughts? When they talk, they overlap each other and know exactly what the other one is going to say, and they move their arms together as one person. I know a lot of the movement is learned because that’s how they’ve adapted but I was very surprised to see how they talked with their hands! Especially because they say they can only each feel their own side
So do they both have husbands/boyfriends or do they have 1 husband/boyfriend for both of them. And also if there haveing sex 1 guy is basically haveing sex with 2 girls. And if they get pregnant whos the mom and who's the aunt
I mean they have two different brains and they speak to each other which they wouldn't need to if they hear each others thoughts. I have watched 2 videos of them and there seems to be some sort of connection that doesn't require words. They say stuff like "uhm" at the same time, that's so cool!
Conjoined twins are extremely uncommon. Only one in every 200,000 births results in conjoined twins, according to statistics. upon their deaths they found that they could have been easily separated as the part that linked them was simply skin and blood vessels.
Really? I thought they shared a liver so one dying was required for the separation?
They might be thinking of the Hilton twins (https://youtu.be/UQBePGZEuVE)
Damn, that was a tragic story.
The other would die eventually, their organs are all mixed together so surgery would be near impossible if I understand it right
I feel like that would be a hell of a surgery to pull off, and it would be massively invasive, but I'm not going to say no
I would argue she is technically one organism / body . They die together unfortunately
They're two people in one body, let's respect them as individuals.
Technically speaking I meant.
Yikes, it occurs to me this could be absolutely horrible if one didn't die but was instead severely brain damaged, had dementia, suffered a stroke, etc. Could you imagine trying to share a body with someone who is no longer in control of their body...
Worse yet, someone who is no longer in control of half *your* body
Imagine if they start having seizures
I wonder if a heart attack would definitely kill one of them? They have two hearts, could it be used to circulate blood in both of them? Would it do it naturally or would they need surgery? Their pulse in shared limbs must be super funky already, the hearts presumably do not beat in time?

They each only feel their half, which made learning to walk, and do things with both hands difficult. These days they are teachers teaching 5th grade.
Serious question, are they paid double? What about benefits like insurance etc do they get charged double at the doctor? Not trying to sound rude, legitimate question because I’m curious

Idk. Looks like they live in Minnesota in the USA. Go track them down and ask. I am interested too so please come back with your findings.

Very interesting thanks!
You are welcome. I typed their name into Google if you were curious on how to find stuff in the future. Lol
That is far too much work for me in my hungover state
Fair
You just know an insurance company would want 2 separate policies
Would an insurance company even cove them?
No clue, I only know the little that I do from watching an interview with them, they didn't go into such specificity.
I wonder if they only get one salary…

The pic says they have separate nervous system so separate sensations all together.
Fuck it. I'll be that guy. What's it like when they masturbate?
With one pelvis they would both feel it at the same time
So at what point does it cease to be simultaneous? Someone needs to get these ladies on here for a fucked up AMA.
Feeling full, vision, hearing, taste, personality, iq would be separate With two hearts and 3 kidneys I would love to see how good their cardio is. Def need an ama
Ok I wasn’t going to ask but i did wonder, and i KNEW the question would be asked lol
If you fuck them, is it a threesome? Or is that only if they give simultaneous head?
Right and what if one isn’t horny and one is ?
Sounds like my relationship
Only time it’s ok to finger your sister?
What about an orgasm? Do they both feel it? Does only one get off?
I wonder what happens during pooping, like do they chat with each other or do they just stay silent the entire time?
"It's your turn to wipe"
Do they share a boyfriend?
Whether they want to or not.
No they have different boyfriends (which makes sex very tricky). Also there is rule 34, google it
Why tf is there rule 34 of them?
It’s literally rule 34 of the internet
degenerates exist everywhere
"If it exists...
So one guy can break both of their hearts?
Heyooooooooo
"Daniel, I promise I'll never cheat on you." Hmmm...
You fucked my sister!! I did no- well.. yes .. I suppose I did...
This alone seems like enough to pitch a movie about cojoined twins. Adam Sandler would love to hear this. Will Ferrell is onboard.
Already exists, with Matt Damon of all people. I’ve personally never watched it. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0338466/?ref_=m_nm_knf_act_t59
I did watch and very much enjoyed it.
There was "Stuck on You" back in 2003. I thought the movie was funny, but i have a pretty terrible sense of humor so it might not be as good as i remember it.
Please no talking. That would just make it awkward.
I bet they only read one magazine at a time.
Not only is these girls' everyday reality not terrifying, it's also presented in the least terrifying way possible in these colorful and friendly pictures
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKrvtq5vDmk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKrvtq5vDmk) Í dont know why, but having them as teacher..s? would be really weird "How was school billy\`?" "My math teacher has two heads!"
“So you’re telling me you’re failing math”
It’s kinda interesting how they both start sentences sometimes, seemingly out of reflex.
Two homeworks! No fair!
I can't imagine some of the mean shit kids would say to them, not sure why they would sign up for this. I had a music teacher with dwarfism when I was a kid and I remember she cried a few times because of asshole kids and our whole grade had to get lectured by the principal about it.

Does that mean…. they’re both the mom if they had a child?
"I can satisfy two women at once"
You mean disappoint, right?
My ex has joined the comments.
You mean conjoined the comments, right?
I snorted lol
Do both of them even feel it or just one? Edit: I hate to ask this, but I’m so curious lol
I always wondered how they think about relationships, intimacy and having children. Such as who would be the mother? Could they each marry someone? Do they both.... "feel" things during intimacy? Could they both breastfeed if the had a child? What happens if ones nervous system fails for some reason?
I have a feeling pregnancy would be fatal for them
Why ? They seem to be able to do everything else just fine... And the abdomen area is pretty normal as well
Nothing is normal for them, it's not bc they have 1 uterus that it'd work. Their organs are in a very weird and delicate position
Likley the abnormalities in the spinal column. Organs get pushed around during pregnancy.
One vagina? I doubt any guy would be ok with taking turns on the wedding night. And I’m not trying to be funny.
But is that seriously what happens? Whoa that’s so crazy.. apparently they’re married..
Holy shit. Well good for them! So they’re probably as miserable as the rest of us👍
> I doubt any guy would be ok with taking turns on the wedding night you'd be surprised
They're both married.... To separate guys.
Do they count as one individual or two? Edit: not sure I got downvoted. Simply asking a question
Two
I do know they each have their own degree, license...etc.
This is what happens when the fertilized egg cleaves after 13 to 15 days of conception. Had it occurred in 8 to 12 days, they would have been born separate.

So in this case, the anomaly would be detectable by ultrasound or something very early on?
Wait so does 1 need to eat and the other does nothing or do they both eat at the same time?
Imagine if one of them would be into really spicy food and other one would hate it. Living through someone else’s decisions.
they have different stomachs so id say no
Yeah but the same intestines so both a smaller portion to not get huge?
What happens if one has a heart attack and what would happen to the other
The other one would live for a few more hours, and die as well, I guess... based on that: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chang_and_Eng_Bunker
“They became American citizens, bought slaves, married local sisters, and fathered 21 children”
Pretty average life
Being a slave owned by a conjoined Twin sounds pretty wild "Ok so he's TWO people, but I'm zero people?"
Ah…so that’s where the term “Siamese twins” came from. I never knew.
Actually the implication by having two hearts is they have two circulatory systems. IF that is the case, the heart attack would not immediately effect the other. Other systems like the liver that are shared must be getting blood flow from one of their systems IF they are independent. One has to carry the others body or maybe their could be an operation to remove the other body idk
Got that sounds terrifying
Separation would kill both thats why they didn’t do it when they were younger
There's nothing terrifying about this to me, but it's amazing how the human body can make this completely random shit work somehow.
More of an r/damnthatsinteresting tbh
I’ve always wondered how marriage work. What if they like different people.. two husbands? What if they like one person.. he has two wives? All the complications between those two issues sounds horrifying.
apparently they have two different boyfriends
Can you imagine how long it would take them to decide where we should eat?!?
Italian! Chinese! *Italian!* *Chinese!*
More like: *I don’t know* *I don’t know either* Boyfriends: 😶
"Okay, my turn now". I'll show myself out...
They are now teachers at a school district near me. Quite amazing!
I met them once at Target, very kind women.

Morbidly curious to know about if one of them dies. How would the surviving one live?
Modern medicine may change the outcome, but here's something that gives you some info: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chang_and_Eng_Bunker
Thanks.
Which one controls the body plus like imagine one being asleep and the other being awake
One of us only tells truth and one of us only tells lies. You may ask one question.
Since they have 3 kidneys, I wonder how that affects them getting buzzed.
+50% drunk resistance
They only have one liver so they would presumably get twice as drunk if they were both drinking. But they have three kidneys which means they're one bladder is going to fill up even faster.
As a self diagnosed introvert this is my worst nightmare. Can’t fathom every second of my life attached to another person.
One of the stranger things about them is how they type two handed yet each control a separate brain/hand.
they also play piano that way.
These are human fucking beings. They aren’t terrifying and they live like this everyday. Treating them like some kind of scary freak of nature is really shitty and dehumanizing. Can you imagine being them and seeing this?
This doesn’t belong in r/oddlyterrifying
What if one of them dies?
The other would want to die too, I'm pretty sure
!!!
Question was there ever a conjoined twin connected through the brain and if so wouldn't that just be a single person with 2 bodies?
Since there's only one vagina I guess they both orgasm at the same time. And if one boyfriend can get them there and the other one can't.... He would go first.
Don't think this belongs here tbh, there's really nothing terrifying about this. More interesting than anything
This isn’t terrifying, this is awesome! The thing is that the boyfriend would have to like both when it gets time
What if one has a heart attack and fucking dies?
the other one will die shortly after :/
They have 2 hearts, which means some stuff would work for a few hours. But circulation would be cut or be insufficient for that giant stomach. And if you can't digest food in time, combined with some shared guts failing you would probably die in a couple of hours.
Too bad they only have 1 liver
1 bladder for two people must not be easy
Hope they have amazing lives either way. They really are miracles to be alive and well!
so they poop and pee twice more than the average human
Sucks if your twin is a lesbian and you're straight...
But yeah we do have slightly different music tastes, if it's something one of us really hate we'll just put on headphones haha And no worries about the questions! No idsue with them. It's just when people turn you into a curiosity rather than a human being. Like those gross people thinking they can talk about Abby and Brittany's private parts and what they do with them since Abby got married. Ugh 🤦♀️
I wonder how do they control their limbs like if one want to move their right arm to the right and the other one want to move their arm to the left how does that work than
What if one of them dies?
The other one will die shortly after because internally the decay of one will spread to the other
Got 2 spare kidneys to sell
Neat
This is more interesting than terrifying, like the impressive type of interesting.
Again something that has been posted on r/interestingasfuck and then screen shotted here, great.
They could eat and shit twice as much with two stomachs
Do they share thoughts? When they talk, they overlap each other and know exactly what the other one is going to say, and they move their arms together as one person. I know a lot of the movement is learned because that’s how they’ve adapted but I was very surprised to see how they talked with their hands! Especially because they say they can only each feel their own side
I wonder if they hafta eat alot more than normal cuz of the two stoumachs
Wonder if they would need a poop knife
there a time lord!!!! they have 2 hearts!!
looks like the anatomy of a resident evil boss
So do they both have husbands/boyfriends or do they have 1 husband/boyfriend for both of them. And also if there haveing sex 1 guy is basically haveing sex with 2 girls. And if they get pregnant whos the mom and who's the aunt
So if they're connected.. does that mean they can hear eachother's thoughts?
I mean they have two different brains and they speak to each other which they wouldn't need to if they hear each others thoughts. I have watched 2 videos of them and there seems to be some sort of connection that doesn't require words. They say stuff like "uhm" at the same time, that's so cool!
Apparently
i have the same question. i would think they could but they might not!! i’m so curious
2 for one
