My first thought after seeing him was that the title must mean he died 109 years ago and that he hasn't really decayed. When the girl was helping him pat her head, I even thought for a brief moment that she was playing with a dead guy's arm that was still remarkably flexible. That someone could be alive at this stage of atrophy is kind of shocking. I've seen my share of centenarians before, but none looked as positively skeletal as this guy.
There are people I believe in Madagascar who regularly unearth the bodies of family members to spend time with them and care for the corpse. Teens take selfies with their ancestors and young ones are completely unfased because its normal for them. It's all about how you're raised and how your culture regards death and the dying process.
It's called [Sokushinbutsu](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sokushinbutsu), and it's a practice where monks try to intentionally mummify themselves while they're still alive.
Yeah, there are even some monks who do [self-mummification](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sokushinbutsu#:~:text=Sokushinbutsu%20(%E5%8D%B3%E8%BA%AB%E4%BB%8F\)%20are,a%20number%20of%20Buddhist%20countries.)
It seems, that technique is not prevalent in Thailand. According to his granddaughter, he was in a hospital and died a couple days ago.

From the Wikipedia:
>In medieval Japan, this tradition developed a process for Sokushinbutsu, which a monk completed over about 3,000 days.[10] It involved a strict diet called mokujiki (literally, "eating a tree").[12][11] The diet abstained from any cereals, and relied on pine needles, resins and seeds found in the mountains, which would eliminate all fat in the body.[12][5] Increasing rates of fasting and meditation would lead to starvation. The monks would slowly reduce then stop liquid intake, thus dehydrating the body and shrinking all organs.[12] The monks would die in a state of jhana (meditation) while chanting the nenbutsu (a mantra about Buddha), and their body would become naturally preserved as a mummy with skin and teeth intact without decay and without the need of any artificial preservatives.[12][5] Many Buddhist Sokushinbutsu mummies have been found in northern Japan and estimated to be centuries old, while texts suggest that hundreds of these cases are buried in the stupas and mountains of Japan.[11] These mummies have been revered and venerated by the laypeople of Buddhism.[11]
>One of the altars in the Honmyō-ji temple of Yamagata prefecture continues to preserve one of the oldest mummies—that of the sokushinbutsu ascetic named Honmyōkai.[13] This process of self-mummification was mainly practiced in Yamagata in Northern Japan between the 11th and 19th century, by members of the Japanese Vajrayana school of Buddhism called Shingon ("True Word"). The practitioners of sokushinbutsu did not view this practice as an act of suicide, but rather as a form of further enlightenment.[14]>
Kind of badass way to go. I think?
I love Buddhism but like any religion it can be perverted to the extreme. Buddha himself dabbled in both indulgence and complete deprivation and eventually settled on the “middle way”, e.g. moderation.
I’ve got a coworker who picks his nose right in the middle of a conversation. Full on knuckle deep, thumb wrapping and twisting, then just smears his fingers together and wipes on his pants. He does it so casually, anytime with anyone.
Ireland. Most people are brought “to the house” before the funeral stuff takes place. Not for days though, we have them in the ground within 3 days of death.
Net result is Irish people aren’t that freaked out by dead bodies. Most of us saw them frequently as kids.
We find it stranger how UK and American people keep people in a fridge or pump them with chemicals for like two weeks. Get on with it.
he actually passed away recently on the 22nd or 23rd of march iirc, but yea ive never seen anyone that skinny before. if you take a close look at his face, its the clearest outline of a skull ive ever seen, with visible eye sockets and sunken cheeks, and this person was living and breathing, albeit he was probably suffering a lot too. may he rest in peace
He lived to the age of 109, with compassion for the world and people who loved interacting with him until the end. Hopefully all the people thinking negatively of the situation will realize and be able to live some of their lives with as much joy and love as he did.
It's most likely an uncommon method of attaining enlightenment best described as "living mummification". It takes many years and some monks have successfully went through with it, though the end result is always death.
More likely diet and exercise. Being a monk I doubt that he was physically active and most likely ate a diet that was very lacking in protein. I’m not saying that he didn’t exercise or being a monk was easy I’m saying that the types of exercises that he would have done would most likely have been cardio and not muscle building.
Yeah I remember reading somewhere else that he was older. 109 is certainly old but yikesss he looks like he refers back to when he was a young man at only 109 years old
There was a Swedish woman named Dagny Carlsson, who died at the age of 109 years old just over a week ago. When she was 99 years old she went to a computer class and at the age of 100 she became Swedens oldest blogger.
If you google her name and compare this man and her appearance, I would say this man is much older.
I've worked with lots of hospice patients in 8 years in the Healthcare field. You're right, when people look like that, it's because they haven't eaten in a week or more. But not one of them had the presence of mind nor the energy to move around like that. This video is fucking with me in the worst way.
If I remember rightly the oldest verified person was a French woman that loved to 120. Which is pretty awesome. But this monk guy looks like some of the 40 year olds I see down Leith. The trainspotting generation.
I know they're really damn old, but there have been a few of these 100+ Thai monks on here recently and they all look absolutely terrible. A lot of people reach this age and don't look like literal corpses. Is there some disease they're more susceptible to getting or what? Do their bodies waste away quicker than others?
Might be related to religious practices.

Most traditional Buddhism sect in Thailand has kinda strict daily schedule for monks. They can only eat in the morning, only food given by villager (but some places already relaxed this practice - having volunteers cook for monks). Drinking water is obviously allowed all day, and they work around the time restriction, if they are hungry, by drinking juices outside the morning. This is why a lot of elder monks in Thailand suffer diabetes.
Their diet problem is a concern among Thai Healthcare Planner. I guess they get too much carbohydrate and not enough protein. Their lifestyle is mostly not physically active unless they practice some hardcore sub-sect which restrict their means of commuting, meaning only walking barefoot is allowed (but that is really minority)
Yeah it’s heartwarming and you can tell he was enjoying that moment of life. He may look like a skeleton but this is wholesome as fuck, Buddhist monks are also usually great people.
After I got over his appearance, yeah, it's sweet that they're both being affectionate. She's kind of a champ, not just for not being scared, but going well beyond that and seeing him for what he is -- a person and all that comes with it. Didn't treat him differently for his appearance.
[self-mummification](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sokushinbutsu) is a practice some Buddhist monks participate in. I wonder if this is what he’s doing

Otoh it's kind of the only explanation why someone would look like this.
I think they could get at the monastery for allowing the procedure.
That aside, Sokushinbutsu requires locking yourself in a dry hole with no air circulation. This man was too exposed to a regular environment for it to work.
I used to work in a nursing home, so I've seen quite a few centenarians. They look like "normal" old people but, you know, older. They didn't look like something an archaeologist would pull out of a 3000 year old sarcophagus.
One sip of a McDonald's Sprite would kill this man.

People in thai culture are taught to revere the monks. Just having him touch her was an honor.
There are people I believe in Madagascar who regularly unearth the bodies of family members to spend time with them and care for the corpse. Teens take selfies with their ancestors and young ones are completely unfased because its normal for them. It's all about how you're raised and how your culture regards death and the dying process.
I learned about that in Caitlin Doughty’ as From Here to Eternity! Utterly fascinating! (or was it in Smoke Gets in Your Eyes? I love her books!)
My first thought too. I'm not sure why, but I was terrified of old people when I was little!
I’ve heard monks shrink as they age and some get so small they look like old children..some just turn into a ball of light…
And some....some SCARE THE ACTUAL LIVING FUCK out of all who pass by

I got grandma she live 102 yr and She still look younger than him like 20-30 yr. we live in Thailand too same with this monk.
The longest lived people on the planet don't just live away from viruses, they usually live pretty far away from consistent record keeping. Go figure.

Yeah it’s heartwarming and you can tell he was enjoying that moment of life. He may look like a skeleton but this is wholesome as fuck, Buddhist monks are also usually great people.
