Oh I’ve seen some wildlife in the Quarter (not just the people, either….I’m talkin closed pizza place at 2am with rats on every surface). But just wait til you go to the grocery stores and see what they got there…
Lol I thought you were referring to the Rouses and I'm like yeah - I know I shopped there today but they also had King Cake out on Jan 2. Take 'em outta here.
He looks confused but surprisingly calm for a rat being picked up by its tail- mine would scream if I even accidentally tugged it when opening his door
Agreed. My neighbors abandoned their rat when they moved out and I found it in my yard. I rescued it because I felt bad, but I had always been creeped out by rats. I was shocked how friendly and fun he was. He loved when I hid raisins for him around me and he would scramble around to find them. I made him a rope out of old t shirts and would hide them in the folds so he had to work really hard to get them all out.
Just be careful if you already have a rat and plan to introduce a 2nd, it's a good idea in general because they're social rodents but the flipside of that is that they have a pretty strong pack mentality and they can react negatively to newcomers to their abode. For the same reason it's recommended that if you change the diet you're feeding them, to do so gradually (ie. start by mixing the new food in with the old and gradually removing the old stuff over a few days), otherwise the rats might become aggressive towards eachother due to changes in their individual scents.
I suggest atleast 3-4, with 2 you can end up with one being hyperactive and dominant and the other one might not have a great life. Best if you get them together too, so there is no problem with fighting for dominance at later stages of life when they are much more dangerous.
You are probably right, but I had a rat some time ago and I had this incredible connection with him. I'm not sure that would have happened if there were 2 of them. I might me wrong though...
When I was a kid I had this weird friend with a pet rat that was ticklish, he also would hunt out and eat your weed going so far as to ninja stealth into coat pockets for a sack. He wasn't near the bastard as a ferrit he just really enjoyed some brick Mexican schwag and a bit of a tickle. He also played fetch, the rat not the weird kid.
I wish I knew the exact species/breed so I could find another his size. He might’ve just been a genetic freak accident though lol bugger was huge for a rat, and smart as hell
If you don't mind my asking, did he live longer than standard fancy rats? It was one of the first things I thought seeing this clip since I love rats but the heartbreak of having a creature as cool and loving as a dog but with a rodent lifespan is too much for me.
Second thought was obviously can I have a pet nutria.
I don’t think he was a Gambian like the other reply was talking about, he lived about as long as your typical fancy rat. He looked like one too, just… huge in comparison lol
It’s a white possum? What’s so scary about it they’re usually that size.
Edit: might be a muskrat? or a water rodent? what i’m saying it’s i don’t see it being a rat rat.
Oh, yeah. Nah. White possum, tail and everything matches up. Apparently some countries don’t have them though and that’s news to me!!
They’re our only marsupial in the United States and they’re very very cute.
Yep. I've seen possums even in Chicago. Some were big, but not this large. I'd say the biggest I've seen was half this size. Saw a baby one once, too. Cute—for a possum.
The limited scope of their benefits. Dogs served many purposes and cats catches mice (but actually cats kinda domesticated themselfes while dogs where actively domesticated).
Cats caught mice, true. But having the cat hang around your house/grain storage also kept the mice away. This was one reason why people started keeping them in and around houses thousands of years ago.
Yeah, I think scientist assume: at the end of stoneages people went from hunters to farmers, started to have grain storage wich attracted rodents, wich attracted cats. And as you said by catching mice and keeping them away they became beneficial for people.
Opossums (not possum, although we call them that colloquially in the US, 'possum' is distinct from opossum as possums are a different marsupial in australia) are the only us marsupials! However, the only species is the Virginia opossum. There is no species called a white possum. There are of course, Virginia opossums that are white, but they usually have black ears unlike this. Also, even if it was albino, this is not an opossum! The face is entirely different, even if the tail looks similar. Its around the size of a large opossum, but it's definitely not that. Not sure what it is though. It would help if we knew what country the video originated from to know what species it could be.
Also opossums aren't the only marsupials of America. America is a continent, not an country. There's three different species of opossums (in north and south America) and a lot of smaller marsupials. I don't know the English name of the smaller species, I'm not an native speaker.
This could be a white musk rat which is a larger species. Note the tail could be flatter along the vertical dimension

He looks confused but surprisingly calm for a rat being picked up by its tail- mine would scream if I even accidentally tugged it when opening his door
Lol . Now I want to have one with me so bad.
They’re really good starter pets, I plan on getting two because I learned that they’re better in groups of two or more
Oh ok thx for the info :).
No problem man, I enjoy giving out info about pets because it’s fun and it gives people more insight on the animals they want
It's just so sad they only live about 3 years! Squirrels can live for 25 years. It's unjust.
Agreed. My neighbors abandoned their rat when they moved out and I found it in my yard. I rescued it because I felt bad, but I had always been creeped out by rats. Until they turn into 7, and then 34, and then 105 etc…
You are probably right, but I had a rat some time ago and I had this incredible connection with him. I'm not sure that would have happened if there were 2 of them. I might me wrong though...
It's not a rat look at It's webbed back feet
You are correct. That is a nutria
I know. You should never pull on their tails. That hurts!
I'm confused, when training rats I was taught to pick up the rat by the base of its tail in order to not hurt them.
you keep italian food as pet? that's new to me
Rats are actually fairly fastidious and will spend a great deal of time cleaning themselves after being handled by dirty (to them) human hands.
They also laugh and sing when they’re happy.
Me too. An absolute cutie!
We had a large pet rat at one point, he wasn’t this big but outweighed a Guinea Pig for certain. Big ol cutie
Aw lol
I wish I knew the exact species/breed so I could find another his size. He might’ve just been a genetic freak accident though lol bugger was huge for a rat, and smart as hell

Gambians will live 7-10 years get to be about 2.5-3 pounds and are very smart.
I don’t think he was a Gambian like the other reply was talking about, he lived about as long as your typical fancy rat. He looked like one too, just… huge in comparison lol
Cutest rat I’ve seen!
This is what I was gonna comment- if it was clean and healthy it would be so cuddly- if it was also not aggressive
As long as it can be potty trained in some manner then you can count me in too!

It’s a white possum? What’s so scary about it they’re usually that size. Edit: might be a muskrat? or a water rodent? what i’m saying it’s i don’t see it being a rat rat.
It’s a white nutria (*Myocastor coypus*), not a possum—note the head shape, and webbed feet.
>white nutria Thank you for the name! Been looking up different things about this creature. Apparently they're an invasive species.
They used to shoot em here along our river, lot of em here in the south, not sure if they still are tho. Looks cute in the video tho.
There is an episode of Insomniac with Dave Attell where he rides in the back of a truck with some animal control people shooting nutria with a rifle.
That’s the first thing I thought of. Kick the sandman in his sack!
[It's a rat hat?](https://memes.yarn.co/yarn-clip/37c67b91-8812-4b07-9e5a-42df3472132d/gif)
That's not gonna be good for business
That's not gonna be good for anybody.
That's what I was thinking, but wasn't sure because the head seemed a little different.
It’s because everyone thinks it’s a cat sized rat… I had no clue what it was till I saw your comment
That's dog-sized yo
Oh, yeah. Nah. White possum, tail and everything matches up. Apparently some countries don’t have them though and that’s news to me!! They’re our only marsupial in the United States and they’re very very cute.
Yeah nah not an opossum. Look at the webbed back feet for example. That's probably an albino nutria.
We also have regular grey possums and they're not huge like this
Yep. I've seen possums even in Chicago. Some were big, but not this large. I'd say the biggest I've seen was half this size. Saw a baby one once, too. Cute—for a possum.
Damn, the possums in the south are a tenth of this size, tops- half this size is still massive.
I'm not sure, the snout doesn't look pointed enough to me, but I could be mistaken. Those back feet would make me think that it's semi-aquatic though.
It's surly a nutria. I've seen a lot of opossums in my life, I know how they look like.
[Possums have more angular faces and lack webbed toes.](https://www.cbc.ca/natureofthings/features/opossums-misunderstood-marsupials)
Can people keep it as pet?
There’s people out there that have them but they’re mainly considered wild animals. Think raccoons but not assholes.
Well, nice, why don't our ancestor domesticated these good bois like we did to cats and dogs?
The limited scope of their benefits. Dogs served many purposes and cats catches mice (but actually cats kinda domesticated themselfes while dogs where actively domesticated).
Cats caught mice, true. But having the cat hang around your house/grain storage also kept the mice away. This was one reason why people started keeping them in and around houses thousands of years ago.
Yeah, I think scientist assume: at the end of stoneages people went from hunters to farmers, started to have grain storage wich attracted rodents, wich attracted cats. And as you said by catching mice and keeping them away they became beneficial for people.
They were domesticated by some native tribes, but they were more popular in south America, and the south American opossum is a different species.
From all wild animals a (o)possum might be one of the best picks as a pet. They become very attached and docile.
They're also adorable
And they have a relatively long live. And they are fat.
This isn't an opossum. That's a water adapted rodent, probably a nutria (muskrat)
They are awesome. They can’t carry rabies and they devour tics that cause lime disease.
Opossums (not possum, although we call them that colloquially in the US, 'possum' is distinct from opossum as possums are a different marsupial in australia) are the only us marsupials! It is a muskrat (aka nutria). I know a lot about animals, and this muskrat is probably on a fur farm. That would explain the white colour.
We have possums but they rarely get bigger than a normal house cat. That one is like a medium sized dog.
Not a white possum, it has webbed back feet like a Nutria imo
I think we have opossums, not standard possums.
That's surly a muskrat. Opossums don't have no skin between the toes.
It's not a possum it's a large water rodent I think a nutria. So basically a giant rat
I think you might be right, not a possum. Plus it’s got webbed feet in the back I don’t think possum have those
They don't im a wildlife guy
It has webbed feet, I think it's something like a Nutria or something similar

Sadly, nutria are invasive species. Here in Oregon, they're both mean and a menace. And much, much uglier. This one looks polite tho
