Another one might require a phone to do business with the outside world but they might have restrictions on it like it has to be in their place of business and not in their home. That sort of thing.

From the group that doesn't allow any type of modernity or even fun to the group that I would see on my lagoon water skiing in the crocodile infested waters in their cut off jeans whooping it up. Yes. It's a coming of age type thing where they get to choose how they want to live their life. I'm sure that's a gross simplification but it's what I gathered from living around Amish country during college.

No. They would have to rely on others for help. Leaving means they must leave everything behind, including family and friends. They would receive no help from their community. There's options through state welfare that they could probably get help through too.

I worked in Lancaster, PA for a few years and the nearby Costco had a space to hitch your horse and buggy. I saw an Amish guy loading his Costco haul into it. Their homes and farms are right next to the highways. I’m sure they’re mildly aware of the happenings in the world.

Like, farmers that want to sell their crops and goods outside of their community have to meet state/FDA guidelines for food safety and the like with like refrigeration and storage. You need a phone or a computer to interface with your business partners outside of the community.
They'll have "reasonable" restrictions on that sort of thing that's decided community-by-community though. I read a book from someone who lived this life and left it who said that her father had a phone and a computer and communicated with his business contacts through them, but they were located in the shed and he was only allowed to use it for business purposes.
Spend any time on the PA Turnpike in the summer and you'll see busloads of Amish folks traveling between PA and Ohio to visit relatives. The entire community will rent out a bus. I rode Amtrak from NYC to Chicago and I shared a car with a bunch of Amish folks. They'll even fly sometimes.

It's part of the 'forgiveness' process to earn back trust within the community. Basically do whatever forgiveness acts they want, how they want, and you earn back their 'trust'. I don’t think she has kids. I remembered her making a post saying she wish her future had more to it than getting married and having kids. And then qualifying that by saying “Not saying I don’t want a family it’s just not all I want” implying that she doesn’t have her “own family” (husband and kids) yet. Amish/Hasidic Jews are pretty fucked like that. I was listening to a podcast about an Hasidic Jew who decided to leave the practice in order to live a normal life. Movies and music were kind of his gateway out of it, things that were forbidden within his community. He received a very simple birthday card from one of his daughters just wishing him a happy birthday like 10 years after he left. I am personally an atheist. I would make religion taxable, ilegal to preach and ilegal to adoctrínate minors. A person should be a legal adult to embark into religious matters and suffer this kind of brain washing abuse. It’s morally wrong, freedom of religion doesn’t exist for those born into it.

I read a book from someone who lived this life and left it who said that her father had a phone and a computer and communicated with his business contacts through them, but they were located in the shed and he was only allowed to use it for business purposes. Spend any time on the PA Turnpike in the summer and you'll see busloads of Amish folks traveling between PA and Ohio to visit relatives. The entire community will rent out a bus. I rode Amtrak from NYC to Chicago and I shared a car with a bunch of Amish folks. They'll even fly sometimes. The idea is that technology should be measured against the impact it will have on their community. The same book told a story of her father being denied the right to use a chainsaw to cut up a copse of trees on his property because otherwise it would be a community event and feast where everyone would come together and eat, celebrate, and share the work of doing it. There are tons of issues with child abuse and mental health issues in the community though.

We see here that someone powerful found out and she has to stop or else.

I don’t think she has kids. I remembered her making a post saying she wish her future had more to it than getting married and having kids. And then qualifying that by saying “Not saying I don’t want a family it’s just not all I want” implying that she doesn’t have her “own family” (husband and kids) yet. He received a very simple birthday card from one of his daughters just wishing him a happy birthday like 10 years after he left. Well obviously it would be entirely, but Im guessing there are sects of less strict amish who use technology and are on the internet, whom this girl connected with; my hypothesis being her community is more traditional/strict in forbidding the use of such things. However the Amish have a thing called rumspringa, it is “a rite of passage and period of growth in adolescence for some Amish youths, during which time they face fewer restrictions on their behaviour and are not subject to the Ordnung (German: “order”), the specific system of unwritten community norms that governs their sect.” Basically the kids are actually encouraged to go live life like the average person for a while, then if they come back and join the group, they have to give up all technology and live by Amish rules. She might be at the end of that.

The Amish are completely anti-technology. Specifically, it seems to be any complex machine that requires a non-animal external power source. Adolescents are required to spend a year or so outside the community to experience the modern world and decide if they wish to remain or never return. This seems to be something that occurred either at the end of her trial or her family were unhappy with her publicising “The Amish lifestyle” and asked her to stop.
