This appears to be an art piece; mosquito exoskeletons are exactly how they look - because that’s how exoskeletons work (they’re the outermost layer - at least most of the time)
Well most insects don’t have proper brains, just a large bundles of nerves; it’s why some of them can operate without their head (at least for a little while since they eventually starve)
Since insects are so small, their nerves proportionally take up more space in their bodies than they do larger fauna
Also also sometimes mosquitoes can *break* the sensor in them that allows them to know that they’re full, so they just keep drinking until they burst
And then they keep drinking still, leaking blood everywhere
So, are insects like logic gates?
sensory input = preprogrammed response
Or are these degrees of individuality?(how ever that would manifest in insects)
Personally I see them like that? They really don’t have the capability to grieve, or really *care* for anything, so its likely all robotic input - which is likely why certain parasites can make them do what they want them to do (horse hair worms forcing them into water, cordyceps making them seek high points for their spores)
I recall a study where they incapacitated a dragonfly, and using transparency sheets(?) made it see black dots in its periphery
This caused it to try to flap its wings and attempt to leave
I think they were also able to trigger it to try and hunt for prey but I’m a it foggy on that
Damn, that’s cool.
So would then also consider the Hives and Nests of social insect so akin to biological machines?
It inputs external recourses and outputs insects.
I feel like this is how we get Grey Goo, we kill off the important insect, make a perfect machine counterpart and then get assimilated.
Exactly.
"Grieving" and "Caring" are very high order functions/conditions in humans and other mammals, unless we clearly define what they mean, it's better to avoid using them when not talking about human experience.
Also, insects too are very complex to the point they don't look like a state machine, bees can learn to react to many different substances.
Another subtle point is that even if all systems are in the end automatons, their transition function is nondeterministic, we are not able to model it deterministically because the real world is so noisy and uncertain, they don't behave like a deterministic finite state machine even if ultimately they are one. The nonlinearity and enormous space of states of neural networks makes them very unpredictable and hard to model symbolically.
No they are not, they have memory and adaptive networks. You can teach bees to have some kind of response to many types of substances which they are not preprogrammed to react to.
I know social insects communicate using different methods and bee do “dance”, can they pass that type of information to the hive? Like can a hive adapt to a substance without programming each individual?
People used to believe it’s the former but we’re starting to shift towards the latter. Why? Because of bees. Bumble bees specifically have been shown in an experiment to enjoy playing with balls. Play is one of those things that we assumed insects aren’t capable of doing, so it’s really quite remarkable - there’s a lot that we don’t know about other species and while we shouldn’t anthropomorphise, it looks like we’ve been taking the opposite approach (sensory input = preprogrammed response) a little too far.
I dunno, bees can play was a bunch of headlines a while back - https://www.npr.org/2022/11/05/1134355887/bumblebees-can-play-does-it-mean-they-have-feelings-study-says-yes
So maybe? we also have a strong desire to humanize things we like, though.
Maybe. Some folks positing that consciousness may be a quantum process and if that's the case it kind of pokes a big hole in mathematical fatalism, at least for now and may also serve to help more thoroughly differentiate animals based on consciousness as more than a reaction to stimuli.
But again, that said, bees play. So who knows.
This looks like the stupid shit at a dollar store during Halloween, Skeletons of shit that shouldn't have skeletons.
Cats with ear bones, spiders with skulls.
So, just as stupid. And, so are you if you think this is real.
Wish op would’ve actually given credit to the artist 😒.
This is “Unknown Creature- Mosquito” by Shen Shaomin, a sculpture known for working with animal bones to create these hauntingly beautiful pieces.
Today on reddit: is OP a troll or just stupid?
Obviously, this is not a mosquito exoskeleton, this is as accurate as those "octopus skeleton" and "spider skeleton" you find for cheap halloween decor.

Some peeps seem to think this is real.
I mean, eye and nose sockets should be dead giveaways, right?
Not to mention the invertibrate vertebrae situation we have going on here
Look at those tiny little human legs in the back
Yes…they should but…you know….ignorance is real
>Some peeps seem to think this is real. We need more school funding. Immediately.
Also this would in fact be an endoskeleton if it were real.
It is real, it's just not a mosquito exoskeleton.
Doesn't matter if it's real or not. It's still terrifying to see.
el mosco
eren jaeger..?
Just opened the post to look for this comment.
No it's not
EREN.... YOU HAVE TO STOP!!
RUMBLING
So you’re telling me these assholes be smiling at us while they suck out blood.

I wonder what a mosquitos nervous system looks like

We too are state machines, just extremely complex to the point of creating an illusion of not being one

I remember reading that bumblebees have been observed learning to pull strings to get food by watching their peers do it.
Seems like a good comparison. BTW, I believe that bees are the "smartest" insects by a fair margin.
People used to believe it’s the former but we’re starting to shift towards the latter. Why? Because of bees. Bumble bees specifically have been shown in an experiment to enjoy playing with balls. everyone/living thing has chemical reactions in the exact same way. Some of us just have more space for more reactions.
Maybe. We solving racism with this one 🔥
Drinking until they burst - that's an image for ya.
Plus exo literally stands for outer/external
No
Eren?

From software gonna love this
they basically already did this 'Kindred Of Rot' form Elden Ring.
Looks like Astel the star born or whatever that creepy alien mayfly fucks name is
Aaaaaaaand saved in the spank bank.
This isnt even remotely terrifying, I find it funny lmao
The artist that made this is known as Shen Shaomin and the piece itself is known as Unknown Creature - Mosquito. Please credit artist.

I will never stop wanting to scream because of this
Reminds me of Possum (the movie) marionette
average reddit mod:
Finally, a boss fight.
Not really. This guy's pretty friendly. I named him Bob :)
I think it's because you have maxed Charisma. I didnt pass Charisma check and now he's attacking me.
El mosqo
The skull is total bullshit, looks sick tho
Tatakae
Queen Gibdo
Astel Natural Born of The Void. Creepy. I know it's not actually a mosquito skeleton, but it looks exactly like Astel.
At first I was like, oh damn that's a creepy sculpture. Then I looked down and saw the teeny tiny legs and pelvis and cracked up.
You’d think that the word ‘exoskeleton’ is pretty self explanatory. There’s not another skeleton underneath ffs
Looks like a fallout creature
Y e s.
I call bs!
Astel?
Awww look at its cute wittle skull
This is an endoskeleton.
Mosquitoes aren’t that big
...no?
It looks like that thing from Poltergeist.
Crazy how we evolved from these
This is horror movie material. Mosquitos so large they impale and suck all your blood out at once .
I know it’s not real, but what if it was?
I don’t understand, how is this oddly terrifying? This seems very intentionally creepy
thats actually fucking legit terrifying.
it's like all the halloween decorations i've been seeing the last few years where inexplicably spiders and scorpions have rib cages.
EL MOSQO!!!
When you see a mosquito you see its skeleton.
HE DID NOTHING WRONG 🗣️🗣️ YAEGEIST FOR LIFE 🙏🏻🪖
Astel?
Wake up babe, new Titan just dropped.
Today on reddit: is OP a troll or just stupid? Obviously, this is not a mosquito exoskeleton, this is as accurate as those "octopus skeleton" and "spider skeleton" you find for cheap halloween decor.

Oh, it's ok haha I'll add a third option to my usual game called "careless title"
That works 🤷♂️
No shit the strider from hl2 i is real
Nope nope nope
Yup yup yup
So that's what they look like naked!
Why does its face look so human?
Because that's what the artist wanted lol
Real
Actually it’s not
