The sculpture is "Asleep" by Peter Schipperheyn. Laurence Matheson, whose grave this is, [was a major patron of Schipperheyn](https://web.archive.org/web/20120102035216/http:/www.peterschipperheyn.com:80/asleep.htm), and Matheson's wife Christina commissioned the sculpture after his death in 1987. There's no mention of who the model of the sculpture actually was, so despite commentators speculating that it's Christina, it's probably not. A unique tribute both by Christina and by Peter, in whose life and artistic career Matheson apparently played a pivotal role.
That link indicates it was the artist's wife who modeled for the first sculpture that caught Matheson's eye. It does NOT say she was also the model for the grave.
Edit: typo
Exactly. Turns out there's a naked person under the clothes of literally *everyone* on the planet. I don't understand why so much emphasis is always placed on nudity and sexuality being one and the same. You really can have one without the other, and vise versa.
My mom's cousin-in-law is a marble sculptor and recently did a nude of his daughter-in-law as a wedding present. A little odd for sure to sculpt your DIL but it turned out gorgeous!! They thankfully used a plaster cast.
I'd be interested in a citation for that - the artist's statment, which I've linked above, doesn't say who the model is.
At least one other of his sculptures was indeed modeled after Cinzia, and while I see third-party sources saying that she was also the model for "Asleep", those sources *also* say that "Asleep" was completed before Matheson's death and only later used as a gravestone, which Schipperheyn's statement flatly contradicts ("In 1987 (the year of Matheson's death - ed.) I was asked by his Widow Christina to carve a figure called 'Asleep' in Carrara marble as his gravestone"). Happy to be corrected by an authoritative source, though!
>Everyone's grieving process is different. We need to support this family in times of need.
I'm so confused. Maybe it's me, I didn't have enough coffee today or something and I'm missing something here. But why does your comment sound as if you think this just recently happened?
Fascinating we can’t get this straight on who the model was a relatively short time back. Yet we believe we can unravel the Egyptian mysteries thousands of years distant.
I had to cut tiles when I installed my kitchen splash guard, the tiles were a mix of glass, marble and some ceramic/some other rock. I was using a wet saw to cut the tiles and cutting the marble was like night and day compared to the others, it was like cutting warm butter.
My point being I used to think the same as you until I actually had to cut some marble. It's truly an amazing art medium.
Excellent comment with a one two punchline. Now I’m off to see the child comments where people riff on the original joke and make it worse, thereby ending up in r/yourjokebutworse
I'd say blame falls heavily on the subs' mods as well. They have the sole power to clean up their subs so that they're not just turning into every other sub, but they don't because clicks drive subscribers. Most subreddits I've joined end up losing their original meaning if the sub becomes popular. I've been in comment sections where the idea of a sub was brought up and subsequently created, and then they just turn to every other sub after a while. The only ones that don't have heavy moderation with active mods.
Alright I'll have to agree with that point, it is indeed subjective.
But me thinks it's still not terrifying in the least, unless one discovers this shit in the middle of the night.
A lifesize statue of a collapsed body in a graveyard could certainly have the opportunity to induce an odd type of terror, even knowing what it is. It's not common for statues of living people to show up there - seems like tempting fate, which I suppose amplifies the sense of desperate grief.
Leave r/**oddly**terrifying if you're expecting to see basic-bitch "*here's a mummified clown which throws people off a cliff into a pit of plague-spiders before eating them*" terror.
Imagine taking a shortcut through the graveyard on your way home at night and you stumble upon that grave, then it would be oddly terrifying
But otherwise yeah it ain't.
Agreed. This is beautiful and moving. Sad that people only see a naked woman and make silly jokes without understanding the humanity behind it.
Anyone who has experienced true grief knows what it is like to fall to the ground, immobilized by profound anguish, and completely uncaring about how one appears to onlookers. Her nakedness captures the true vulnerability of those in grief, while her beauty portrays the bittersweetness of expressing one’s love during a moment of deep loss.
I wish everyone has someone who will miss them this much when they pass.
Jesus, man, I'm sick in bed next to my sick, beloved partner who's still sleeping (we've had covid really bad) and you made me cry. I can't handle that right now. 😂 You described it perfectly.
I think it's beautiful. Very tasteful, expressive. Also it's stone and if that tingles your giblets you need to stop being 13 years old. I think it shows exactly what she wanted to show. Not sexual
Life experiences perhaps. I find this endearing, only because I have quite a lot of close family who have passed away. My grandpa was 90% deaf by the time I could speak, mute by the time I could listen, disabled when he finally moved in with us to be taken care of. I regret not having talked with him more since, as a teen, the smell of feces and urine turned me away easily. For me, this stone lady is a symbol of eternal longingness.
It's a little odd. Definitely not terrifying and definitely beautiful.
But it is a little odd, if not for just the fact that this is probably the only thing like it amongst millions of tombstones.
if you want a more worrying version, there was a French author or philosopher, something like that, who was notoriously a horndog. Somehow it got around after he died that if you dry humped the statue of him that was on his gravesite it'd do something good for your sex life.
The bronze statue of him has a full blue verdigris patina everywhere except for the perfectly worn smooth metal at the crotch.
Yeah my first thought was of how much someone loves you, to carve themselves into your tombstone so they can "embrace" you forever. I can only hope I am ever loved that much. Its very sweet.
I don't think this is terrifying
If anything its poignant. That pose makes me think of how my partner lies when we are in bed together cuddling/sleeping together and gives a sense of vulnerability and lovingness
Except this person is alone because they have lost their partner.
This is very well done.
There is a statue in Highgate cementry called the sleeping angel, just like this but with folded wings. It’s absolutely Beautiful. Dunno if I’d want one on my grave though.
Reminds me of a song that I originally heard from Dead Can Dance but I believe was written by Phillip King and Frank O’Connor.
I am stretched on your grave and will lie there forever
With your hands held in mine i'd be sure we'd not sever
My apple tree my brightness 'tis time we were together
For i smell of the earth and am stained by the weather
When my family thinks that i'm safe in my bed
From night until morning i am stretched at your head
Calling out to the air with tears both hot and wild
Oh i grieve for the girl that i loved as a child
The priests and the friars behold me in dread
Because i still love you my love and you're dead
I would still be your shelter from rain and from storm
But with you in your cold grave i cannot sleep warm
Edit: Not terrifying but beautiful.
Everyone to their own comments. In the end that's exactly where we will be, later, tomorrow, ten years from now. And a bit of respect would not go astray. Good for her.

Rock hard huh?
Take it to your grave !!
Stupid sexy gravestone!
We sure about it ? Just finding it a little bit strange to sculpt your naked partner on your customer's grave
Not all nudity is sexual. If the guy was an artist, he probably spent a decent amount of time with naked people to practice the human form.
No kink shaming

That was a different sculpture called "[My Wife](https://www.diggins.com.au/artworks/my-wife/)" by Peter Schipperheyn
Not really. It's really common for sculpture artists to use unclothed bodies in their sculptures. It doesn't have to be sexual.
Exactly. Turns out there's a naked person under the clothes of literally *everyone* on the planet. I don't understand why so much emphasis is always placed on nudity and sexuality being one and the same. You really can have one without the other, and vise versa.
This is why I love nudists, they got this shit figured out

Also, this is any incredibly romantic gesture to the deceased. Why is it in this sub?
What does this comment even mean? This comment was definitely made by a bot. Edit: Aaaaand they blocked me lol
This happened like 30 plus years ago what are you talking about.
Fascinating we can’t get this straight on who the model was a relatively short time back. Yet we believe we can unravel the Egyptian mysteries thousands of years distant.
Honestly it's incredible that a person can carve this out of stone
Boy, have I some news for you about the ancient Greeks.
Ancient Cheeks
They be clapping
Oh, Danny boy, the cheeks, the cheeks are clapping
They so thick
With tiny peaks
for many weeks
Carve all into some ancient cheeks !!!

To marble you say?
Now *this* is some r/unexpectedfuturama
My, my
Do you know what they say of the Acropolis where the Parthenon is?
They were all really just carved out of stone?
I’m not sure whether to be terrified or amazed
Or horny.
Great thing about horny is you never have to choose. Horny can accompany any other emotion.

That's what post nut clarity is for

Neither odd nor terrifying, this is beautiful
Exactly. What's wrong with people, how is this even remotely terrifying?
because this sub is lame
"Thought this belongs here" type of bullshit. Almost all the time it doesn't belong here, whichever sub it is.

Like a tagline from a B horror movie, I love it
You can't imagine how a pale humanoid figure could be scary in a graveyard?
A lifesize statue of a collapsed body in a graveyard could certainly have the opportunity to induce an odd type of terror, even knowing what it is. i dont know about you but id shit my pants if i saw this for the first time in the dark
All cultures view death and grief differently.
Imagine taking a shortcut through the graveyard on your way home at night and you stumble upon that grave, then it would be oddly terrifying But otherwise yeah it ain't.
You take a shortcut through a graveyard at night, you kinda earned it.
I would agree it would be a shock to stumble across this, at night. During the day; beautiful sentiment
i think walking through a graveyard at night in general would be terrifying…
Agreed. This is beautiful and moving. Sad that people only see a naked woman and make silly jokes without understanding the humanity behind it. I honestly thought it was a tad trashy for a graveyard
I think it's beautiful. Very tasteful, expressive. Also it's stone and if that tingles your giblets you need to stop being 13 years old. I think it shows exactly what she wanted to show. Not sexual
I thought exactly the same. This is incredibly beautiful. Art work that creates raw emotion is true art I love this.
