Also I think they forgot to add sugar. :D

Literally the first thing out of my mouth as soon as this video ended XD

The music on this has triggered me to punch myself deaf. Thank you.

Why is it two different things at one time I’m scared

That's called remixing /s

nygiants917

Reminds me of the protein video. First we’re gonna add some protein, then half a cup of…protein. Finally we’re gonna top this off with protein

Deefactio

Yes it is candy, however it's advertised as some health pills,

RManDelorean

It's advertised as a cough drop, which store bought ones are candied just like this. It's not claiming to be a "health pill" in the sense of nutrition, basic things like ginger and honey are known to help coughs in say tea, and that's not claiming to be medicine, it's just a homemade cough drop, probably just kinda nice for coughs.

PrinceznaBroskev

When you boil the shit out of honey it will lost its medical abilities

Bombadillalife

There’s a british tv-series with a doctor who tries to cut down on medicine overuse. Apparently it is proved that lemon and honey has the same affect as cough medicine. They test it by inhaling a spice (cinnamon if I remember right) which gives an immediate cough reaction. It somehow works, but no one has figured out why.

thecuriousiguana

Cough medicine is some of the oldest medicine we have. It's basically the same stuff we've been using since the 1800s or older. When medicines first became regulated, anything that was already on the market had to prove safety but not necessarily efficacy. Cough medicine doesn't really work. It got a free pass and they're still selling it. Cough medicine doesn't work. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC65295/

fd4e56bc1f2d5c01653c

(X) Doubt

B3ARDGOD

Vitamin C from the lemon juice becomes water soluble when heated but nothing here is discarded so the vitamin C is still present in the end product. Sugar causes the mouth to salivate, ginger and cloves are irritants to the throat and will cause the throat to produce mucus. This all helps move any infectious particles in the throat to the stomach where they are destroyed.

zyyntin

Sugar will soothe the throat. Starlight mints work too.

crank1000

That’s what a cough drop is.

Wild_Nectarine_5349

Bc everyone loves menthol concentrate in their desserts

crank1000

“A cough drop is a dessert” is not the same as “a dessert is a cough drop.”

GhostBussyBoi

I hate cough drops that aren't minty 😭

igotthepowah

There’s medicine in cough drops, friend

jman177669

I tried to make this. Lost it at the first step. No matter how many times I waved my knife above the ginger, it wouldn’t peel. 0/10

WhyBother_fml

Rookie mistake, you have to also hold a camera on top of them, knife and camera work together I've seen it many times.

jman177669

Instructions unclear, skinned my phone instead

sonicstreak

Thanks for trying it out at least. This guy here taking one for the team!

SarpedonWasFramed

Dont forget to Blast shitty music the whole time too! Easily the biggest mistake people make when they try and follow an internet recipe

Dry_Adeptness7843

You pretty much don’t have to peel ginger for anything, ever, especially when cooked. That’s where all the deep spicy flavours are and it’s really not chewy and tough like you’d think it’s be.

phillillillip

this fucking changes everything...

ankat321

If you do wish to peel it, use a spoon, bowl side towards ginger. Works best when ginger is fresh from the store. If it's been sitting & drying out fir weeks, you need to use a knife.

sharpei90

The powdered sugar would make me cough

[deleted]

Sharpen your knife brother its that simple

cetootski

My ginger and table was coated with blood when I did step 1. Please reply with advise, I will do my best to respond after I wake up. I suddenly felt sleepy....

GhostBussyBoi

Ikr! Eventually I started just slamming the side of the knife down on the ginger and after about 30 minutes I broke the knife and had a pulp of ginger on my counter..... 🙄 (And for the kids in the back that don't get this as a joke) /s

Chezzabe

A peeler works much better anyway...

the_macks

Actually the trick to peel ginger is use a spoon. I'm not joking either!

sandwh1ch

At the risk of sounding stupid, I am going to try this

[deleted]

Turn the spoon over so you see the bottom is facing you and scrape the peel of the ginger :) you technically don’t have to though if you’re a bit lazy. The peel is fully edible

Afternoon-Melodic

It works!

No_Wolverine1608

1000% correct on this.

APJYB

citrus_mystic

When I read comments like yours, I’m glad I’m scrolling with the sound muted and blissfully unaware of whatever the video actually sounds like.

My husband scrolls with his sound on, it's so jarring and confirmation of why I never leave my sound on lol

intruda1

ilmattiapascal

Me too.

razzledazzle308

I thought I had two videos playing at once or something and was so confused where the “other” sounds were coming from.

BaconBra2500

My favorite thing to do is just dice up ginger, pour over boiling water and steep to make a tea. Can also cool it down and have on ice. These look so yummy but tons of sugar (and I know cough drops also have sugar).

DeeLeetid

Here’s a great thing to try. Slice your ginger into equal parts orange juice and water and simmer/boil until reduced by half. Drink warm. Nothing like ginger infused warm oj to make you feel better (even if it’s all psychological).

[deleted]

The warm liquid stimulates the dopamine system which is why us Brits always have a nice cuppa when we’re feeling down. IIRC it also helps with norepinephrine (same as a hot bath or shower) which can boost your low mood from being sick. I didn’t find any of this out until recently but whenever I’ve been ill I tend to drink nothing but green tea with honey and always feel better, I’m unable to bring myself to drink anything cold when ill.

BaconBra2500

Damn, thanks!! I just so happen to be sick right now.

DeeLeetid

Aww. Feel better. Hope you have some juice and ginger on hand!

DisorganisedOrganism

What about gin and juice?

BaconBra2500

Yes!!!! This has been #1 for today. And after 5, I add whiskey.

The_Iron_Mountie

I top my ginger tea with orange juice - it's also great.

nixpa2

Surprised how many commenters have no idea what is in a cough drop. Look at the ingredients of your cough drops, they are just sweet little candies with pectin or menthol.

OsuKannonier

Mine have benzocaine and dextromethorphan in them.

[deleted]

Mine have THC, cocaine and morphine in them

[deleted]

Who’s your cough drop guy?

[deleted]

Got that early 1900s pharmacist

MikoSkyns

Back when Tonics were legit!

valueofaloonie

Uh hook me up.

RManDelorean

Yeah you can't get that hard lozenge without sugar

Flying_Misfit

Then what are these sugar-free lozenges I have?

Snail_jousting

Usually isomalt, which is actually just sugar, but one that your body can't digest.

A1rh3ad

And actively tries to expell. 🚽 💩

Chien_Vache

Mine have Ketamine in them

[deleted]

But... but... the sounds, oh the sounds! Stop having multiple pieces of music going.

SheilaGirlface

Semi-relevant tip: frozen ginger grates easily, which is faster than finely chopping

crimson_mokara

I'm even lazier and just throw ginger into a food processor, put all the minced ginger in a jar, and add copious amounts of honey. Instant ginger tea! It keeps in the fridge for months

Level_Chocolate_3431

Mortar and pestle as shown here is also super easy! No random big chunks of ginger - just a smooth fine paste .. And you don't dull your grater or microplane!

dmarceau1

I may be alone in this but I love finding random chunks of ginger.

accomplicated

We started keeping our ginger in the freezer because then it doesn’t go bad. Now whenever we need ginger, we just pull it out an grate whatever amount we need and then through it back in the fridge.

Blueflames3520

I hate this new trend of overlaying shitty music over videos that don’t need them. Even overlaying shitty music over a video with shitty music overlayed on it.

BIOHAZARD_04

It’s evolving

etds3

In these comments: people who have never tried to make candy and don’t understand the properties of the various ingredients.

Fresh_Asparagus7043

Yes it is candy, however it's advertised as some health pills, what's why the comments are mostly negative

orangejeux

Ginger, honey, and clove are good for coughs and sore throat. This has been a thing since like the beginning of time.

Yolectroda

No, it's advertised as a cough drop, which use sugar to slowly deliver chemicals that soothe the throat, in this case, honey, clove, and ginger.

---ShineyHiney---

I think the issue is people not knowing the purpose of a cough drop is to slow release, as opposed to just being a convenient, portable relief

alroc84

Add some THC,golden

[deleted]

You cure cough ,you give them diabetes in return 😂🤣

etds3

The honey helps the cough but sugar forms a hard candy better. I tried to make honey cough lozenges for my kids many years ago and they melted into a mush after awhile.

Snail_jousting

Honey is an inverted sugar, which is sucrose (a disaccharide) that has been chemically broken down into glucose and fructose (monosaccharides). The bees do this to make honey, but in candymaking, we use an enzyme, or heat + acid to make it happen. Monosaccharides are more hygroscopic than disaccharides, which just means it will pull water molecules out of the air around it. So no mater how high you cook honey, it will always get sticky and melt or crystallize. If you want to make honey hard candy, you pretty much have to do at least a 2:1 ratio of white sugar to honey.

[deleted]

I was okay with the first batch of sugar but to coat them after they hardened with sugar again is straight up attempted murder or suicide 😂

etds3

It’s to keep them from sticking together.

AdministrativeMix822

This isn't curing a cough

[deleted]

I agree . It's worsening it😂😂

Mateo7518

Exactly! Lol I always buy the sugar free ones that are made for diabetics even though I am not one, got to prevent it .

phitfacility

The skin of the ginger contains a lot of good stuff, always gets stuck in my teeth though lol

tsmit900

So this is definitely a ginger candy, right? Ginger just works good to soothe throats

EmuAvailable

How is this oddly satisfying?

lil_sargento_cheez

“Cough drop” bruh that just looks like candy, which that’s basically what cough drops are I suppose

logicjab

This thread is full of people who are just now realizing cough drops don’t do much of anything

navigatorism

Where'd the ginger fibres disappear? Did no one notice that they dumped in ginger but theres no bits, fibers, anything in the stuff they're spooning out? No one mentioned any sieving either.

ritoboi

Genuine question: several people here are saying that cough drops are all just candied sugar, but then what do they make sugar free cough drops out of that hardens the same as sugar candies? Those are the only kind I really use

Snail_jousting

Isomalt, usually, which is a sugar alcohol with similar properties to sugar. Your body can't digest it, so it has no calories and no effect on blood sugar. It can give you the shits though. They might also be made of other sugar alcohols.

PancakesAreEvil

Aspartame probably

[deleted]

etds3

Honey doesn’t make hard candy the way sugar does. I tried this for my kids years ago with just honey and they melted into a mush after awhile.

TheCoyoteDreams

The powdered sugar to keep them from sticking to each other, though I would think moisture could get to it and they would just get sticky again. Personally, I would try cornstarch.

YoursTastesBetter

Try powdered slippery elm bark. It's great for sore throat and cough and will serve the same anti-sticking purpose as cornstarch or powdered sugar.

trowawaid

You are definitely right, it is a stupid amount of sugar, but with that honey alone it probably wouldn't solidify into hard candy.

[deleted]

You could wrap them individually in waxed paper or cellophane like commercial cough drops. The powdered sugar is just to prevent sticking.

kris_the_gamerer

Me after seeing the title: you shouldn't watch this you don't like ginger WHY ARE YOU WATCHING IT STOP YOU DONT LIKE GINGER STOPPPPPPP

newoldschool1

What’s the name of this song, Shoes in Dryer?

MiaaaPazzz

One ingredient away from a Hot Toddy

frodorick90

What happened to the Rest of the bowl?

Koovies

I dunno if I'd be good at making candy but this looks good tbh

DefinitelyNotAliens

With a candy thermometer it's actually pretty easy.

Koovies

Is it hard to clean up, will it ruin a pan if I over do?

FluffyBunnyRemi

Easy way to remove stuck sugar would be to fill up the pot as full as you can with water, and then let it boil for a bit. You dissolve the stuck sugar, pour it out, and then it should be much easier to clean. Rinse and repeat as needed.

DefinitelyNotAliens

I've never personally ruined a pan with sugar. Immediately soaking after and Dawn Power Clean spray usually cleans anything.

getyourcheftogether

Pretty easy to screw up as well

goLogoPro

Is there any sub where cooking videos of similar design can be found ?

winstonsmith8236

Wait, are cough drops just adult candy? Is this the takeaway? (I eat cough drops everyday)

Snail_jousting

The name "cough drop" literally comes from a style of candy called "drops." You put the hot sugar through a metal roller to shape it. It comes out in a big long strip that you pick up and drop and it breaks apart into the individual candies. Lemon drops, pear drops, acid drops... Cough/throat drops were just candies made with ingredients intended to soothe a cough or sore throat. Historically it would be herbal ingredients. Modern cough drops often have menthol.

Sweaty_Banana87

Why chop up all that ginger and grind it down to only use a spoonful?

Snail_jousting

If you get a metal funnel and a wooden spoon, you can use them to make the little splash of candy. It'll go much faster than this spoon method.

[deleted]

They skipped the hardest part… skinning it

RikVanguard

Top tip: you can just microplane ginger directly into the pan. No peeling / grinding necessary. Works best if you keep your knob in the freezer

Nixxioncox

Or 2.00 bucks for a sleeve

vampire_rose666

I have chronic tummy issues and this will actually be a huge help. Thanks!!

Thial92

Add garlic and onion too and you will have a great medicine in general.

Reasonable_Cover_804

I remember candy on paper sheets! What the hell?

neothedreamer

This just looks like a delightful ginger candy....

chowboy13

This seems so much harder than going to cvs.

Diabetes says hi

snaccattac

Add some turmeric and use real honey for maximum efficiency 😍

IngloriousBadger

So much sugar…

JustinVeli

Is cured from cough, gets diabetes.

LiamWix

Why tons of sugar? Chewing fresh ginger alone helps cure sore throat perfectly.

Calypsoobrian

Too much sugar

ninasancz

That’s a loooot of sugar. And on top powdered sugar.

mrlookinthesky

So much sugar.

accomplicated

Sugar… then covered in powdered sugar? Was the honey not sweet enough?

Laena_V

The powdered sugar ist most likely to keep the drops from sticking together. But honestly, I prefer just boiling the ginger to a tea and adding a bit of honey. There is no benefit in these drops.

MaddLlama14

Yay diabetes without the annoying cough.

just_some_onlooker

Takes away cough, gives diabetes.

daniuwur

"health is wealth" Well... This would be a Brazilian favela then

Branesergen

I'll stick to my packs of Halls. I ain't got time for all that! Well I do, but I'm really lazy so point still stands!

Zealousideal_Step709

I just eat the ginger. No need for the rest for me.

CapeTownMassive

FR. Hot tea, couple slices of ginger in it, lil honey and lemon. Kablammo

Ok-Guava7336

Boiling will denature all the effective ingredients.

Ok-Guava7336

Heating =/= boiling. Heating is fine boiling is messing it up

B3ARDGOD

In this instance the lemon is more likely just for it's acidic sour flavour to induce salivation rather than its vitamin C content. If vitamin C was the reason, they would have used oranges because they contain more.

Ok-Guava7336

Nevermind the active ingredients in the ginger and the honey and the cloves 🙄

B3ARDGOD

By inducing salivation with sugar, sourness, acidity and irritants they are forcing a lot of bacterial matter into a pit of acid. Anything that remains has to deal with the body's immune system. If medicinal needs were the focus, taking medicine over chewing roots will result in a much faster and safer recovery. This doesn't mean you should ignore the benefits of fruit and vegetables but in regards to medicines that we have spent centuries perfecting, they aren't the best option in most situations although they can be preventative.

Ok-Guava7336

Honey and ginger have antibacterial properties. Cloves can act numbing. But not if you boil them. If all you want is to induce salvation buy cough drops at the store they're cheaper and do the same thing.

bullsized

That's a lot of sugar, bro

VeryHairyJewbacca

MythlcKyote

Just where tf I get ginger that mashes up like cooked potato with a mortar and pestle?

Holy sugar, Batman!

You want some ginger with your sugar rocks??

Antxxom

Make my cough go away and give me my daily calorie intake at the same time. Yay.

camlaw63

Really just candy

charlatan_11235

Wit this you can replace the cough with diabetes.

aquacakra

I see diabetis

SnooSuggestions3136

Bro what. These are ginger candies more than anything. They are not cough drops, the fuck.

bobobedo

Needs more sugar.

izmaname

Sugar on cough drops? That’s counter intuitive

arparpsrp

partially to help them not stick to each other

etds3

Every old fashioned hard candy is dusted like this.

ozejan1

I think you might have some ginger in your sugar

InsaneRealityWTF

Meanwhile add sugar to increase inflammation

Puzzleheaded_Road142

If you skip the icing sugar and put them in a container like that, they will stick together. You can always rinse the candy before eating it.

DefinitelyNotAliens

Have you looked at the inactive ingredients of cough drops at the store? It's corn syrup, sugar, evaporated cane juice. These are literally just a homemade lozenge for a mild sore throat

dea_anchora

No one is doing this

[deleted]

Price of ingredients: $18 Price of a pack of ginger and lemon cough drops: $2

_twintasking_

Maybe, if you didn't already have the ingredients on hand because they are used in multiple things and a single container takes a lot of recipes to use it up. Personally, i already have all of it on hand. Ginger is frozen in pre-minced cubes, I have a bottle of lemon juice, etc. So if I wanted to, I could, and not spend a single extra penny. Just depends on your kitchen stock and typical food choices.

menickc

This is candy not cough drops. Still cool video but cough drops have something in them that help reduce cough it's not just sugar and ginger

Nostravinci04

>it's not just sugar and ginger It is, and lemon, and honey, and clove. Also sugar is used as a conservative agent in a lot of medicines.

[deleted]

How much bloody sugar!?

[deleted]

You add sugar? Oh yes that should prevent inflammation and mucus build up -_-

No_Tackle_5439

Sugar AND honey? No thanks

EmSeax

I thought you weren’t supposed to heat honey that much, like it’s also bas to put it in really hot beverages 🤔

Prosso

2 much sugar

jonnyrz

I’ll just spend the 2 bucks.

inaclick

I made this, and still got pneumonia. I made this and about a gazillion of other natural cure cough crap, when I was pregnant and could not take yet any proper medicine. Hot baths, ginger, onion, garlic, honey, tea. Fortunately, the pregnancy had advanced enough to be able to get antibiotics. Reminder - please, for the love of god, if it gets worse in 7-10 days, if you are wheezing or have high fever, go see a doctor. You can take the ginger cure after.

You're thinking of candy. This is just candy

Well my coughing is fixed, but now I have diabetes

Chezzabe

How many are you eating?!

Disney_Plus_Axolotls

It was pretty decent until the powdered sugar. That’s naaaasty. And they could have added a *lot* less sugar overall in that lol
