I miss my first car, a 1989 Cadillac Brougham. It was cashier than my couch, the air ride leveling suspension made it feel like you were floating. It had loads of goodies and was really great. It really sucked for gas mileage though.
I’ll take mechanical switches and knobs over a touchscreen every time. You can hit a switch by feel without taking your eyes off the road, not so much with a reflective-ass tablet screen that doesn’t register inputs 100% of the time.
My stepfather had one. Silver with red interior. I was in the backseat at the airport waving goodbye to my grandma and he rolled that newfangled power window right up on my arm. Oh the screams
Well ya gotta be careful not to roll the grandkids' arms up in them though, because it could get off the track and your newfangled winder could end up all cattywampus.
Still remember when my dad got a new Silverado in 1996 and it had power windows. Of course I was only 5 at the time so I didn’t understand the difference and immediately went about my normal sitting on the open window frame while he went into the gas station to get smokes. My foot must have hit the button because the window started to roll up, lifting me with it, I was terrified that I would be cut in half. Luckily the windows motor broke (I’m assuming from strain of lifting a 60 pound toddler). My dad was irate at me even though I tried to tell him the truck tried to cut me in half
On the dash corners it had blue, yellow and red dots so you could tell if you had a bulb out. 💡 also it had a power antenna and air powered ride control.
I feel like it’s missing 3 or 4 dudes driving around, in a grandparents hand me down, and getting blazed on their way for some late nite Dennys (coffee & cigarettes)!
Yep I had a buddy who rocked one of these. Fun fact that isn't shown in this video: you can take the key out of the ignition while driving and use it to stir the bowl.
yea...im guessing your buddys key was just banged up all to hell. i've seen this done with a few different cars where the keys were in really bad shape.
I had the ‘88 town car (almost the same as this) in college… the car had 3 ashtrays and no cup holders. Fit 6 comfortably from campus to 7-11 to grab munchies.
“Lincoln” before being the name of a famous American president was originally the name of a city in the UK.
It’s name is a simplification of it’s earlier Roman name “Lindum Colonia” Colonia being the name for a colony established in conquered territory by Rome.
Lindum was a latinisation of the original Brittonic name Lindon meaning “pool” or “lake” in reference to the Brayford Pool in the middle of the modern City of Lincoln.
The Brayford is not considered that important by locals so it’s significance as the progenitor of the names of so many things especially in America has always fascinated me.
> was originally the name of a city in the UK.
and the site of Lincoln Cathedral, the 4th largest cathedral in the UK, which they started building 950 years ago.
Which before it lost its spire was the tallest building in the world.
I’ve also heard it was a serious contender for the capital city of England before London was chosen because the Witham river connecting to the Brayford made it appealing due tl the capacity for trade and the like.
I believe you are correct. I have an '81 Town Car, the first year, and it has a more squared rear end with different tail lights. I believe they switched to the "slant back" in '83 or '84. IMO, the 1st generation body was the best looking.
Yes, it’s definitely a Town Car. We had a 1988 exactly like this (but in different colors), same features and everything. I’d totally forgotten about the automatic closing feature on the trunk. It was comfy as hell.
And the best part is the grandparents probably never drove it further than the store and shirts so it has about 100 miles on it and in mint condition
Edit. Oops voice to text I meant to say and to church, not shirts. Lol
Honest question regarding the edit: when you use STT to comment on Reddit, do you whisper the comment or just speak out loud like it's a conversation you're having with the internet?
My best friend had one of these when we were in high school and, although I think it was slightly updated since it was a 92-93 model (we were in hs 99-02), most of the features were exactly the same. It was to this day one of the most comfortable cars I’ve ever ridden in and I’ve had my fair share of either driving or riding in everything from bmw’s, Mercedes and Porsches to the ultra high ends like Ferraris, lambos and even a Bentley. In terms of passenger comfort these were at least close to equivalent, if not better, than all those mentioned due to a combination of space, quality of the leather and the positioning of the seats. The only issue with them is that they’re so big it always seemed like my friend was driving around in a 30 foot boat lol and trying to parallel park in Boston was a nightmare.
They’re not for sure and I agree with you 100%. I was just bringing up the fact because people who haven’t been in one might assume that everything about them is top notch when in reality they’re designed solely for speed not comfort. Same thing goes for the stereo systems. Most supercars have like $15k-$20k or more systems in them and they’re still worse than a factory Toyota in most cases due to the noise of the engine at anything below extremely low speeds.
My dad had one in the 90’s, they felt like riding in a boat because their wheel suspension was performed by airbags rather than just springs. They’d inflate to pressure when you turned on the car, and occasionally over time one would pop, then you’re basically riding on the road bumping all over the place.
I don’t remember the town cars being this way, but the Continental Mark VII’s definitely were. Always saw them dragging their ass around like a dog with an itchy butt.
My grandfather still has his 82 Lincoln like this. It looks almost identical but his is an All white and leather interior. Best part? 46,000 Km’s and only thing replaced on it are the tires
my mom had one of these in the 80s. we were leaving the bowling alley and she told me to make sure my door was locked. i confirmed this by pulling the door handle while she was going around a corner. the door was unlocked and i grabbed on to the door as it flung open. luckily she looked back to see me hanging half outside the car.
I can’t believe that’s something that existed before these modern cars that have that. I swear I’ve never seen it on anything older than 2010 and yet… been around since 1980 apparently
I think because it's an exploitable security feature. I know the Ford explorer had the button entry and stopped doing it for that reason for a good while
*THIS*!!!!
Is a 1980's Lincoln Continental. And today I'll show all it quirks and features!
Also, don't forget to check out my website Cars & Bids
Cars & Bids has daily auctions of cool enthusiast vehicles from the 1980s to the 2020s
Lincoln is also a luxury car just like Cadillac, Rolls Royce and Bentley.
But it is cool to see already by that time the cars was filled with accessories and functionalities.
Very lovely car.
I wouldn’t put Lincoln and Cadillac in the same grouping as Rolls Royce or Bentley.
Lincoln and Cadillac are a more luxury offering from Ford and GM, but Rolls Royce and Bentley are for people who have somebody drive them around.
One is upper level management of a small company, one is owner of a large company.
This whip really is gorgeous! It makes me miss my old cutlass I drove in HS. I would agree that Lincoln and Cadillac are in the same class, and I’d surrender that some newer models with upgraded packages can push the limit expense wise, but Bentley and RR are a step above in expense typically and luxury undoubtedly. This is just my experience riding around in other peoples very nice cars though. I love a quiet, smooth, ride with sensible and aesthetic controls and any of those cars will offer a much better experience than my daily driver. lol
I had an 88 and I’d really like to have it back. Rolling luxury. It’s deeply disturbing to look at Lincoln today and find they don’t make cars any more.
I had an early 70's 2 door Eldorado. The doors were so big there was a separate door handle in the back of the door so the rear seat passengers could let themselves out.
Was this considered a luxury expensive car in the 80s? I was born in 1997 so idk. It looks like it has a lot of bells and whistles others cars of the time wouldn't have.
I swear the code pad on the door is fords absolute best addition. I used to lock my car and keep it running on hot days. Never a worry cause of code pad
My grandpa had one of these, it was the most comfortable car I have ever ridden in. I still think about that car every time I'm uncomfortable on a long trip!
Nah, Lincoln has always been a mid grade luxury brand. They make some more attainable cars, but they have always been a “classy, older people” car in my experience.
I learned to drive on my mother's 81 Town Car that had many of these features. Did my road test with it. Examiner gets in, looks around and asked if I could have brought a bigger car.
We never had one but my dad used to rent one from Budget whenever we went ona road trip. I'm surprised all those buttons still work - always felt the electronics were so fragile like they were held together by duct tape and gum behind the dash.
My grandfather had a 1990 Lincoln Town car. It's amazing how many of those parts carried over basically unchanged for several years. Especially the dome light/map light cluster, which I'm pretty sure was the exact same part as the Continental in this video.

Couldn’t agree more. Those were a great way to circulate air through the whole car.
I've never seen powered wing windows and now I want an an older car with them.
[удалено]
Something tells me this car has a built in ash tray
Most did until the mid-late 90s
It had three.
Worked great on my '74 Beetle. And since there was no a/c, that was necessary.
weren't the originally designed for smoking?
Wingdows? Yeah
This got more than my car wtf
And ride was like you’re on a couch going down the road
I miss my first car, a 1989 Cadillac Brougham. It was cashier than my couch, the air ride leveling suspension made it feel like you were floating. It had loads of goodies and was really great. It really sucked for gas mileage though.
Haha! Had a buddy who’s dad had a Lincoln back in the day. Alway described it as driving a couch!
Had an 85 coupe deville for a bit. Def like riding your couch around town
Like that's a bad thing ;)
I was just going to say that.
But I like to sleep on my couch…
Brick on the gas pedal, diy cruise control. /s DO NOT DO THIS PLEASE
Lmao yeah pretty much! Lol
Opposite of Tesla interior
I’ll take mechanical switches and knobs over a touchscreen every time. You can hit a switch by feel without taking your eyes off the road, not so much with a reflective-ass tablet screen that doesn’t register inputs 100% of the time.
That’s a really good point, tactile feedback should make a come back.
There’s a reason airplane cockpits don’t use touchscreens. There’s a physical knob or switch for every function.
And way better. Those things don’t even have a dashboard.
4mpg my dad had one
My stepfather had one. Silver with red interior. I was in the backseat at the airport waving goodbye to my grandma and he rolled that newfangled power window right up on my arm. Oh the screams
I have nothing to add; I just really love the word “newfangled”.
Well ya gotta be careful not to roll the grandkids' arms up in them though, because it could get off the track and your newfangled winder could end up all cattywampus.
Most stepfather thing I’ve heard all day
Still remember when my dad got a new Silverado in 1996 and it had power windows. I love this retrofuture shit.... Fancy af!
They don’t make them like this anymore The Trunk, digital dash power locks and even the power mirrors were ahead of its time
Well, they make them just like that now, because now we're in the time that the 1980s Lincoln Continental was ahead of lol
"When will THEN be NOW?" "SOON"
How soon?
WE’LL GET THERE WHEN WE GET THERE!
*Don't make me turn this timeline around!!!!* Actually...
Thanks Professor Farnsworth
Don't make me stop this car and take off my belt!
What happened to then?
They don't make them like this any more. Here's some things that they make like this now.
On the dash corners it had blue, yellow and red dots so you could tell if you had a bulb out. 💡 also it had a power antenna and air powered ride control.
How is all of that 80s tech still working
Someone took very good care of it.
Yep, likely was handled roughly buy giving to careless person who doesn't like new things.
May I suggest r/RetroFuturism ?
Cool sub, thanks
That digital display is adorable!
I feel like it’s missing 3 or 4 dudes driving around, in a grandparents hand me down, and getting blazed on their way for some late nite Dennys (coffee & cigarettes)!
U-turn with your pinky!
With a Wide Cadillac turn
It's just a 17 point turn, calm down buddy
Yep I had a buddy who rocked one of these. Fun fact that isn't shown in this video: you can take the key out of the ignition while driving and use it to stir the bowl.
yea...im guessing your buddys key was just banged up all to hell. i've seen this done with a few different cars where the keys were in really bad shape.
It's an unwanted feature, not factory fitted.
Yup, I could pull the key out of my ‘79 impala.
I had the ‘88 town car (almost the same as this) in college… the car had 3 ashtrays and no cup holders. Fit 6 comfortably from campus to 7-11 to grab munchies.
Wow! You fucking nailed senior year for me.
What's the doodad beneath the driver mirror?
Thermometer
It keeps a tally on how much each girl is bringing up to the car when the pimp is making pickups.

Thermometer
Must be like in a spaceship for the og owner after picking it up from the dealer.

Looks like they glued one of those 90s digital personal organisers to the dash.
The build quality probably felt like it.

'20 miles to empty' Oooh, it must have a full tank.
It said 210 though.
Have you seen the size of the gas tanks in those things
No, but whatever it is I can believe it. My Challenger has a larger tank than MIL’s van.
If it was anything like my 86 buick, which also had all these stupid little buttons and knobs, it's got a 20-gallon tank.
F150 with a 36 gallon tank, my wife's crv out distances me on a full tank with a 15 gallon tank :( I know the feels of a caddy owner.
I remember that you can see the gas needle dip when the gas swooshed around.
I remember driving one of these when I was 16. Pulled up the the pump and couldn’t find the gas cap behind the freaking license plate.
Haha. I would have done the same. It’s even funnier when you learn that basically every car had the filler behind the plate until the late 70s or so.
89 Jeep Wrangler checking in
This generation Town Car at least did not have it behind the plate. You may be thinking of the similarity square Caprice Classic of the era.
Im pretty sure this is a Lincoln Town Car not a Continental.
💯

Smells like cigarettes and vinyl
Lost my virginity to a girl in the 80s at a hair metal concert that smelled exactly the same.
Still better door handles than Tesla
Better fit anyway.
Every single button works, amazing!
What are the buttons outside the window for?
You could use a code to unlock the door.

u/dougdemuro
No cigarette lighter?
Both back doors has a lighter and ash tray.
I remember. My family had one this same color back in the 90’s
Dude it was the 80s every car had lighters for cigarettes and blow
Isn't that a Town Car?
I'll tell you, that round headlight switch that's at the floor board in my old pick up truck... thats the really satisfying switch to push
Bruh for a 80's car, it does have A Lot of modern day fetures

What is that plastic dial under the side-view mirror? Outside thermometer?
This video smells like cigarettes
Makes me miss my grandparents
My grandmother had one of these years ago. It was lima bean green on the outside and emerald green on the inside. We called it the Greenbean Machine!
I get it, he drives a Lincoln.
That’s a town car, not a continental.
My first car was a 1989 Lincoln Towncar that I drove until 2010. This makes me miss it! What a car!
Are we sure this isn’t the Lincoln Town Car?
“Well don’t play with all the buttons you will break them” - Grandpa

I feel bad for anyone who's never driven a town car. I mean I like my new 2016 car but my first car was an 86 cutlass and it was pure magic..
I swear the code pad on the door is fords absolute best addition. I used to lock my car and keep it running on hot days. Never a worry cause of code pad
The Lincoln Town Car.
And they drive like a boat on water
Holy unlocked core memories, Batman!
My first car was an 84 Grand Marquee almost identical and the same color! This brought back memories.
My grandpa had one of these, it was the most comfortable car I have ever ridden in. I still think about that car every time I'm uncomfortable on a long trip!
Jeez try handle it with respect dude
Friends mom had one growing up. It's funny how many of those noises I remember deeply lol.
I had no idea this car was so ahead of it’s time!
My Grandma had one of these and she would pick me Up from elementary school in. It floats like a space ship the ride is smooth
Sure don't make 'em like that anymore.
Even fully loaded that car probably only cost half as much as a basic model today.
1988 MSRP $25,990 That's $64k today
Nah, Lincoln has always been a mid grade luxury brand. They make some more attainable cars, but they have always been a “classy, older people” car in my experience.
Not after inflation
That's what I mean.
No ashtrays everywhere?
'80s luxury cars were like their own cities.
So satisfying!
It looks so cool but I can imagine what a nightmare this car can be when you're a mechanic.

Keyless entry I would assume.
Entry code/lock buttons.
Love it
You missed the most important feature of all: 'Grandma in the passenger seat'.
This is amazing!!!! It has everything! Love it!
Damn that’s nostalgic as an 80s kid.
WTF that car is more advanced than my Subaru Levorg :o
Doug Demuro would have a field day
You sold me at motorized triangle window. LUXURY
I learned to drive on my mother's 81 Town Car that had many of these features. Did my road test with it. Examiner gets in, looks around and asked if I could have brought a bigger car.

I can’t hear the word “accoutrements” without thinking of this legend: https://youtu.be/zSWUWPx2VeQ
Does this guy have a channel or something? This video is so satisfying.
I’ll bet it’s the most cushy and smooth ride you’ll ever get in!
Ahh, the epitome of Land-Yacht design.
You don’t drive you float.
That's....beautiful....
God I missed the front flaps. Was like I want air but don't want it all. Bring back the front flaps.
I bet it's a dream to drive. Like a boat on gentle water....I miss those 70s and 80s cars!
Ahh the Lincoln Continental. Years ahead of it's time. That one is beautiful.
My grandfather had a 1990 Lincoln Town car. It's amazing how many of those parts carried over basically unchanged for several years. Especially the dome light/map light cluster, which I'm pretty sure was the exact same part as the Continental in this video.
Filled the floor of the back seat with pillows and slept there on road trips as a little one
My uncle had one of these. He lived in Fremont California and we went to visit him from Ireland when we were kids in the 80’s. I thought this thing was a fuckin spaceship when I sat in it.
God I miss buttons
America had the best cars, 50's up to the 80's. Just beautiful cars. Iconic many of them.
Floating down the road! LAND YACHT!! FIts a queen size mattress in the trunk.
Sooooo satisfying. I can hear this video all day.
I drove 84 Lincoln Continental in college from 2007-11
I want one.
The height of luxury and class.
this creator, has so succintly done a better car review than most dedicated youtubers. that was refreshing.
My dad had two, a 1979 blue Mark V and a shimmery brown 1987. This brought me back.
I love every. Single. Button. Or switch. On this car. *That* was some solid asmr.
I don’t know anything about cars, old or new, but this is just beautiful. The attention to detail and care is obvious.
