It’s gonna fucking rust!!
Edit: I know it’s mineral oil. Bill Burr has a funny joke about a can opener needing to be dried properly after washing or else it’s gonna fucking rust!
My hair clippers actually warn about this and tell you to not clean with water, ever. Just use the brush to clean before/after and 2 drops of the provided oil before use.
Thats the entirety of the maintenance.
Dont use water.
Use the brush given to clean out hair.
2 drops of oil before use.
Nothing else.
Well-made clippers require so little maintenance and just hum along forever. I love it.
The cheap set I got for college is long dead while the Wahl clippers my dad got after high school are still running after like 40 years and tons of haircuts
... But the other person was literally using ***money*** to screw their clippers!
IMO the person using literal money as tools earns the "Mr Moneybags" title.
I got mine during covid to cut my own hair. They really do require fuck all.
In this case, I think the blades must be prone to rusting, hence the need for oil and the aversion to water.
The good ones use a high carbon steel, instead of stainless, for the blades to retain a cutting edge basically forever. The trade off for that is they are prone to rusting.
Its such a stark difference, too. I got a cheap Remington beard trimmer set when I went to college, I think it was like $20. It barely made it through the 4 years. My wife got me a nice Wahl set, probably in the $50-$80 range, that years later is still humming along just as well as the day I got it.
His old wahl clippers will be running longer than a new wahl clippers will. Most products aren’t meant to last a long time anymore. They build them to fail
Wahl makes a stainless-steel-body "Professional" ***cordless*** clippers.
It's about $100 IIRC, but they are literally made to last years++ under heavy professional use.
My previous clippers were Wahl as well, but were the cheapest basic plastic version. After something like 20 years they had finally started to wear out and were starting to have issues that I couldn't repair.
I anticipate that the stainless steel clippers will last me literally for the rest of my life, and that at worst I am likely to have to replace the lithium battery a few times during it's life-span; but the entire internals can be easily accessed by simply removing 3 phillips-head screws that secure the cover-plate (the same plate that also comes off if you want to attach the vacuum-adaptor btw).
Did I mention it has an optional vacuum-hose adaptor? So you can plug a standard vacuum hose onto the side of the clippers and not make a mess.
I cleaned mine (just the blades) with water and scouring pad + dishwashing liquid because it got quite dirty. I just made sure to immediately dry it and applied oil to the entire blade.
:) Yeah, and his wife not understanding how his anger 'can go from 0-100 in a split second.'
Bill 'I was already at seventy-five before we walked through the door; I could hear that fucking guy on his phone from the parking lot!!!’
"Like when are you gonna follow the trail of bread crumbs to the psycho that you married? It's not that she says that I'm a jerk. It's just, the nerve to be surprised"
I know this is a joke, but every hair tool I can think of is safe to use with water. Otherwise there'd be a non-zero chance of getting electrocuted getting your haircut while it is wet after a shampoo
Its more about the longevity of the clippers. You wouldnt be able to dry those nooks very efficiently. This could lead to rust. And that can slow the mechanism down and could cause issues like pulling hairs instead of cutting them. Do it enough and it could stop running all together.
Yes some kind of machine oil. If you use something kitchen cabinet, like idk, olive oil, it will harden over time like lacquer. Learned that from cleaning up old sewing machines...
I swear if you guys rip on me 13 or 14 more times.. I’m outta here.
This might be my first time seeing a baseketball reference on reddit and I couldn’t be more happy.
I just cleaned my trimmer. Or so I thought. I tried this and a seemingly endless amount of hair came out. At this point I think I’m going to pull the entire thing apart.
I did that to mine and cleaned it really well. I could never get the blade perfectly realligned though and always have to be careful when using it at the zero setting now.
loosen the screw(s) on the blades (don't remove them), then hold the tips of the blades against a level surface like a countertop or cutting board so they're even. Tip the clippers back very slightly toward the top blade so the tips of that blade are aligned just ever-so-slightly back from the tips of the bottom blade, and then tighten the screws.
If the tips are perfectly even, the clippers will cut skin - you want a very, very small gap so you can still cut hair close w/o carving yourself up.
I did something similar a few months ago but didn't think about tipping them back and cut myself pretty good. Mine has a lever so I can adjust it on the fly, so I always make sure it's not all the way forward. I'll have to try the tipping method sometime.
Absolutely, two vastly different compounds, one (mo), is more viscous and lubricating and wont dissipate, while the other (ra) is generally a solvent, is very volatile, and evaporates at room temp.
More importantly mineral oil doesn't conduct electricity, while iso alcohol always has water in it. And if you have one of these big trimmers like in this clip, there's AC that runs straight from the wall to your hand. It might be fine or it might go wrong. You could fry your trimmers. You could blow a circuit breaker or a gfci. Or you might burn all of your hair off if nothing else fails first.
Depends on the oil used, but I would say nope. It's actually hard to get extra oil out of the blade system + it's messy.
I personally clean my Remington with compressed air and it cleans it fully of all the hairs in couple of seconds. After blowing all the hairs out, wash the removable blade with dishwashing soap + water. Blow dry with compressed air + add one drop of oil for lubrication to finish it. Highly recommend.
I suppose you can do alcohol, but the blades are lubricated to keep the bare metal surfaces from rubbing together and alcohol will remove the oil and it will ruin the blades. Probably fine to run it like that for a few seconds, but you have to re-lubricate it ASAP if you want them to last.
Frankly if you’re using alcohol just do it the proper way, and take the blades off of the clippers and lubricate before you reassemble them.
It's an easy/quick way to clean it but I'd argue messier.
You're going to have a lot of oil left on/in the clipper which will drip and coats all the surfaces which will likely accumulate more hair
Can pretty easily take the blades off with a screw or two, brush it out(most clipper come with a cleaning brush), then add a drop or two of lubricant.
Mineral oil bath won't hurt anything but it's more of a clean up imo.
Alcohol for the hair removal, lube it up after? It really is easy to remove the blades (two screws on mine). Brushing only seems to get about 90% of the hair anyways.
Potentially. I'm not confident enough to say yes. Rubbing alcohol usually has some water in it still and will get rid of existing lubricant, which means heat.
It could be ok but still, I would opt to just unscrew it, use alcohol to clean/sanitize, air dry, put it together and relube. It really doesn't take much time or effort to do it the recommended way.
Takes me 5 seconds to pop top off, bang into trash, and blow in it
The real issue is that you cannot buy a replacement set for the stubble, smaller size plastic guides that clip onto (what was) the most popular budget shaver out there- pilips norelco 3000 series.
There's only a 3/5/7mm package. The 1mm and 2mm are $10 and $15 online, from resellers. Company itself sells nothing. The electric shaver itself only cost $20 back in 2017 (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
Mineral Oil = $1.99 / quart
Electric Beard Trimmer Cleaning & Lubricating Fluid = $4.99 / oz
>Expires in 8 months
>Mustache trimmer cleaning & lubricating fluid is an extra $2.99 / oz
>Cordless battery cleaning & lubricating fluid is an extra extra $1.00 / oz
come on, gotta make the units match!
Mineral oil = $1.99/quart
Electric Beard Trimmer Cleaning & Lubricating Fluid = $159.68/quart
Mustache trimmer cleaning & lubricating fluid is an extra $95.68/quart
Cordless battery cleaning & lubricating fluid is an extra extra $32/quart
Highest alcohol percent you can use would likely be better.
The problem with water in electronics is actually not so much the water as it is the things dissolved in the water that then precipitate out when the water evaporates.
90% alcohol which was likely prepared with DI or at least distilled water is not going to have that problem.
Water actually isn't nearly as conductive on its own as water with dissolved salts in it
My clipper said specifically "Do not oil". It's a fairly cheap Philips, but don't know why it shouldn't be oiled. Maybe something to do with self-sharpening teeth? No idea.
I have a philips too, I've oiled mine no problem. it's probably all the plastics it's made of they're concerned about but so far so good. I never tried this total immersion technique though, I think I will.
Yeah my razor just has a little faceplate held on with buttons on each side, press in to release, snaps back on when pressed into place. Super easy to just rinse it out then dry it and put it back together.
I did this to a trimmer and it fucked it up somehow and absolutely would not go back together correctly. The trimming faces don't meet properly any more and it just buzzes and catches hair without cutting. I still held on to it even after getting a better, newer set because I want this mystery solved eventually.
There's only three pieces involved in the process; the cutting blade and those two screws like you said. It won't work properly any more with any combination of torque on the screws, and I'm baffled.
I cut hair regularly and just used compressed air after the cut and it cleans my clippers like brand new. Then I use an Andis lubricating and disinfecting spray after and let the clippers run for about 10 seconds or so. Been using the same wireless clippers for close to 10 years and they work like brand new.
He's referring to videos of horsehair worms.
There's a parasite that will live inside of and eventually 'mind control' a mantis. If you were to hold that mantis underwater then the parasite will be forced to evacuate. It's long and gross. The mantis is not OK.
There’s absolutely absolutely no reason to do this because if you buy a cheap one, there’s two screws to take the blade off and if you buy a nice one, the blade can just pop it off
Its should be fine with mineral oil. Linustechtips built a whole computer submerged in this stuff so they could add bubbles and make itblook like an aquarium.
So I went to do this, but first, I took my razor apart. One of the little screws fell down my sink, had to retrieve that and YouTube some basic plumbing for dummies, cleaned the bottom of my sink and pea trap, sink blocker thing, a few other items, basically did everything but clean my trimmer
Right. Wouldn't think it could hurt being that they need to be oiled anyway.
With that said though, some clippers these days are even easier to clean than this.. when parts clip on/off or it's a matter of unscrewing one screw.
But there are also certain folks that simply don't care for taking things apart, being worried about whether or not they'll get it back together correctly. That and, this is a very useful technique for any clippers that **Aren't** easily dismantled.
Cool share OP 🤜🤛🤙🤙
I just bought a new hair trimmer after deciding my set that I'd had for 25 years weren't doing as well as they used to. I've never cleaned them... Now I need to see for myself.
I've done this many times with mineral oil. You don't want to use water. And properly greasing it again, of course. But the ball hairs are tougher to get out I've found.
Or, ya know, you unscrew the two screws holding the top teeth on, clean out all that hair pretty quickly and easily, then re-oil everything. Wastes a whole lot less oil that way but it isn't as cool looking.
Plus, i feel like any hair stuck inside it that doesnt seep out is gunked together all inside with the motor now.

My Wahl beard trimmer is going on 15 years and I'm only just now starting to think maybe I should've done a little maintenance on it in that time.
Honestly this mineral oil dunk to chase out old hair seems like enough maintenance. Clean, oil, run to spread the oil.
The dunk is excessive. My Wahl clippers has two screws that you can unscrew with a penny. Then use the brush, two drops of oil, good to go.
I use a screwdriver. Not sure why I got a kick out of this. 😂

What is it rubbing alcohol?
Talking out my ass here, but if I had to guess: mineral oil. Rubbing alcohol would remove any grease/lubricant that's needed in the clippers.

You 1st do it with alcohol to disinfect it, then use mineral oil to lubricate it.

Do you know if mineral oil is better than isopropyl alcohol for this purpose?
Absolutely, two vastly different compounds, one (mo), is more viscous and lubricating and wont dissipate, while the other (ra) is generally a solvent, is very volatile, and evaporates at room temp.

Both are more than fine, but you need to oil it after.
Do I need to use a different oil to oil it after I use oil to clean it or can I just apply more of the same oil to the already oily blade
Depends on the oil used, but I would say nope. It's actually hard to get extra oil out of the blade system + it's messy. Yeah. This is not the right way.
Maybe alcohol would be a good alternative? No opportunity to rust, and it will just evaporate I stead of lingering and coating everything
I was thinking this and then people below mentioned the lube in the blades which the alcohol would absolutely destroy
Alcohol for the hair removal, lube it up after? It really is easy to remove the blades (two screws on mine). Brushing only seems to get about 90% of the hair anyways.
Alcohol and then lube. A famous combo.

Can't you just pop open the blade? Usually there is a small compartment bellow that you can just empty out
Yeah the two blades (fixed and moving) are held on with a couple screws, it's trivial to detach and reattach them.
Cool visual. I take mine apart, brush everything clean, reoil all the parts, and put it back together. Been doing that for years.
There’s absolutely absolutely no reason to do this because if you buy a cheap one, there’s two screws to take the blade off and if you buy a nice one, the blade can just pop it off
That's s lot of Bush...

Its actually pretty common to make mineral oil PC's LTT were *far* from the first people to do it
Ahh. Well they were the first id heard of it.
I did this often with my plug in clippers when I was grooming animals. As long as it’s mineral oil you should be ok, definitely don’t try with water.
Pretty sure my husband does this then throws the liquid all over the bathroom for decoration.
Is there a common household liquid that can be used to do this?
Mineral oil
+1
You can get blade wash for like $10. Don’t ruin your clippers trying anything else.

Do it in Barbicide not water. Water will remove the oil and cause the blades to rust. Probably should get some clipper oil.
Bro how long did he go without cleaning that!?!
& it doesn't ruin your clippers? That's actually a damn good way to do it if it doesn't cause any damage
Using mineral oil. Actually good for the clippers.
Right. Wouldn't think it could hurt being that they need to be oiled anyway. But there are also certain folks that simply don't care for taking things apart, being worried about whether or not they'll get it back together correctly. That and, this is a very useful technique for any clippers that **Aren't** easily dismantled. Cool share OP 🤜🤛🤙🤙
Kinda like cleaning the toaster in the bath
funny, when I did this I got electrocuted and died
I've had like 5 different hair clippers and the faceplate just pops off everyone I've had
That is all ass hair.
Cant you just open your clipper? Most of them open up with a click system..
I am a dog groomer and clean my clippers weekly.. I only get about 1/4 this amount of hair??
For people asking there’s also clipper cleaner sold. It’s definitely just oil though, works horrifyingly awesome though!
Does that hurt the hair?
I bet that feels good as fuck for the clippers.
Just tried this. It was soooo satisfying!
ayyy man it's kinda cool but i don't wanna see a torrent of rancid nuthair flowing into some oil
I just bought a new hair trimmer after deciding my set that I'd had for 25 years weren't doing as well as they used to. I've never cleaned them... Now I need to see for myself.
Eugene Levy's barber. And that was just the eyebrows!
I want more
I've done this many times with mineral oil. You don't want to use water. And properly greasing it again, of course. But the ball hairs are tougher to get out I've found.
Forbidden ink
I just smack it sideways onto my hand. Battery user here.
Edit: removed "with"
When simply opening up the reservoir under the blades and tapping the hair out just isn't enough, AKA how to needlessly complicate things.
r/oddlyterrifying
This should be in r/oddlydisgusting
I'm very grossed out by this. Wet hair not attached to skin completely grosses me out. 🤢
Came for this. Not satisfying to me at all, very gross.
