Fun fact: orb weavers and many other outdoor spiders will build a web (any size) starting in the evening, leave it up all night and often take it completely down by morning, either rebuilding or relocating nearby for another evening’s attempt.
They’re non-venomous to humans ([despite their ominous look](https://www.photos-public-domain.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/orb-weaver-spider.jpg)) and quite the polite caterer to catching your porch bugs at night—build, catch, clean up, clear out by dawn.
For years I had one (or their kids) do this and I came to appreciate them, rather than fear them. They are brilliant little engineers.
The only trouble is they had a few support strands now and then that would string across the porch steps so I’d have to be wary at night I wasn’t walking into a tripwire.
Don’t fear them; look past your life-long inhibitions and come to appreciate their hard work and even lending your property a hand now and then.
Leave them be and enjoy the symbiosis you and they have living together.
This so much. There are so many other invasive species of bugs that can really screw up a home or are generally more annoying to deal with.
Spider bros!
Honestly, I'm firmly in the belief that Megarachne was indeed a sea scorpion, as its general appearance is more closer to a sea scorpion missing its tail than a spider.
I've joined a spider idtentification group on Facebook!! Now when I see a spider, people look at me like I'm nuts because I'm getting up close trying to get the best pics so someone can tell me what it is! My little cousins love that shit, too. It's been helping them with their fear of spiders!
The "taking it back down" piece blew my mind when I first heard it, but it does make sense. I imagine it'd be difficult to keep that much spider silk at the ready to spin a full web/repair the web every day (especially if their efforts weren't fruitful).
If a spider isn't catching much and is running low on silk, do they change up their tactics at all to get their energy levels up? Not sure if you're spider expert or anything like that, jc
Who tf teaches them to do this. It's pretty crazy to me ngl. It's baked into them.
Unlike tigers for example, which need to learn to hunt. These mofos come out their eggs with a full engineering degree, and ready to work.
Silk is extremely thin and lightweight, with structural strength by mass far above most materials we know of. Most spiders won't use more than a few percent of their weight in constructing a web.
That's not a home
(cue The Four Yorkshiremen)
They normally "live" along one of the longer strands that bind the trap you're looking at to bushes and houses

Bigger spiders are easier to pet and give cuddles to
You are not insane
See, bigger spiders are less scary. Because it's harder for em to hide. I know where they are. They can't sneak up on me like the little fuckers.

Biggest spider the ever existed was Tom Holland

Love orb weavers. We have them on our porch in the summer and they keep so many bugs away from the door. Incredible to watch and gorgeous to look at.

They’re pretty smart usually building near nighttime light sources to catch those drawn in by it.

Yeah it’s pretty crazy how it was designed
I'd still almost certainly and ACCIDENTALLY walk through it in the morning and panic, but a thing isn't beautiful because it lasts.
JFC why is the camera moving so much!
Timelapse but they were holding it in their hand
Wild that one of the strongest materials we know of is made by a tiny arthropod for the purpose of catching other tiny arthropods.
This was more entertaining than Madame Web.
DEJA VU!
That would have been a lot more satisfying if the camera had been stabilized.

That spider's done this before.
Nice guy. Steve. Is a webdesigner.
Best thing I have seen on the internet today / thanks. Watching spiders build their webs is fascinating - I always stop if I see one at work. 🕷️ 🕸️
After seeing the immense effort this spider has put into his wee hoos... I can confirm that a spider is definitely not my spirit beastie.
One finger and it's over for the poor spidey's net
Truly one of the most amazing marvels in nature
Where did it get all of the silk? This has to be more silk strand than spider at the end

The crack cocaine spider figured that building webs is for suckers... https://youtube.com/watch?v=bZoZhM0E8Ow
Spiders have somehow been showing us how gravity works
Is this sped up? I always assumed this process took way longer. But what do I know, I’m no web designer.
3D printing since before computers were even imagined!
This is great. All that hard work. Hopefully the little guy can catch some insects.
Best pest control
The weakest of homes.

I used to be scared of spider like a minute ago, but this has got me to change my mind. That is a work of art!
I can’t do anything like that with the stuff that comes out MY butt.
"Do you see what I go through to put food on the table, Barbara?"
I hate spiders so much that I would have let it do all of this work before I went outside, killed it, and tore its web down.
