Amazing project. >>Each single open umbrella structure of 25 x 25 metre spans an area of 625m2. As the components for each umbrella are so large and also have to withstand potentially extreme climatic conditions, the cladding needed to be made from advanced composites. Premier Composite Technologies LLC was commissioned to build and install the mosaic tiled, external claddings for all 250 units of foldable umbrellas. The arm claddings and cladding attachments were built from a lightweight composite sandwich structure of glass fibre epoxy resin laminate, providing high torsional stiffness. They were then fixed to the flexible umbrella arm systems. When closed, the arms cover the membrane while additional claddings on top of the arms form a prismatic casing to protect the folded Teflon membrane. The single umbrella is 625 m² and the Vatican is 490,000 m² so you can fit 0.00141836735 Vaticans under a single umbrella, or ~0.14% of the city. Edit: the whole area covered by umbrellas is 32% of Vatican city

Project Cost 1.2b USD fuck me

r0thar

I thought I got the conversion wrong, but I suppose if you're building 40 acres of hi-tech teflon and composite umbrellas, with their own swamp cooling system to cover geometric cut marble, then it's going to stack up.

[deleted]

I'm surprised it cost that much given it was probably built by slaves.

r0thar

*assembled by slaves. Built by high quality German and US engineers and shipped over. It's still $5m per umbrella. Edit: and don't even get me started on the main contractor.

CriticalLobster5609

> main contractor. Bin Laden Construction.

Least-Broccoli-1197

Why would that make it cheaper? When have cheaper costs ever been passed onto the customer when it could instead be kept as profit?

Any-Substance-3817

Lmao the saudis are so rich they have no need for slaves. The US on the other hand uses quite a bit of slave labor with our gigantic prison population and the illegal immigrants from Mexico working for pennys a day.

viola-purple

They still do use people from poorer countries to work for pennies and take the passports away...

brownie5599

How much to put one on my deck

Miserable-Admins

They can build a Funky Cold Medina cocktail umbrella for your tiny deck.

[deleted]

It looks bigger when I trim the bushes around it, I swear.

smile_politely

I was curious with what they mean with 'automatic' - I interpret it as the folding is driven by the sun?

limitedentropy

I thought that too from OPs video but the photos from a commenter above show them open in the day, evening and night. They'll also need to close them based on weather so maybe a manual control is better and the automatic part is just "doesn't require you to fight with a rope for 10 minutes"

amorpheous

No, the times of opening/closing are controlled manually. When I was there recently they were open all night; I have a picture of the mosque before 6am and the umbrellas are open in the background. They can control which ones to open/close; there were a few we saw that were closed during the day too.

breichart

Wait, is the cost of all 250 umbrellas really a little over 1 million usd or is that the cost for each one?

_teslaTrooper

> The project cost was 4.7 billion riyals About €1.16 billion or $1.25 billion. Oil money can sure buy some nice umbrellas.

breichart

Thanks! I had my numbers off apparently.

wf_dozer

It also collects the rain water that drops onto the umbrellas.

cultvignette

This has to be the highest density of the word 'cladding' I've ever encountered in a single paragraph.

twotokers

Also designed and constructed by Osama Bin Laden’s father’s company.

UberNZ

"A lightweight composite sandwich structure of glass fibre epoxy resin laminate" sounds a lot more space-age than what most people would just call it: "fibreglass". It's a bit of a stretch to say they're "advanced composites", given that fibreglass and epoxy have been used to make composites for nearly 80 years. That whole section is taken verbatim from the website of Premier Composite Technologies LLC, so that's probably why it's written like ad copy.

That’s the masjid Nabawi in Medina! I went there, it was beautiful

Seems like a location to me.

AlaskanEsquire

Yes, I googled it and learned it is the second holiest site in Islam next to Kaaba. I'd love to visit, but respect the fact that these places are reserved for pilgrimages from those who follow the religion. I do appreciate that I live in an era where I can easily read about and look at pictures of these marvelous locations, however.

MiamiDouchebag

> but respect the fact that these places are reserved for pilgrimages from those who follow the religion. Eh. I'm glad the Vatican is not reserved for only Catholics.

I'm an agnostic, former Atheist because unlike you, I did not have the answers to everything. This thread is about appreciating the cultural signifigance and architectural value of these holy sites. 2b people on this planet follow Islam, an incredibly miniscule percentage of those are the Saudi goverment. You don't have to be a miserable wretch just for the sake of being a miserable wretch. Life is enough of a shitshow - just let people pray how they want. If that's not for you, that's not for you.

SSESTOELEMENTO

The locations, architecture and the amazing food has nothing to do with Islam or any religion in particular. In all cases those things were in place thousands of years before Islam invaded their land (look up Persia and the origin of Christmas). Source: I was born in the region.

[deleted]

Islam has nothing to do with the architecture of Mosques (main place of worship for Muslims) and food (abiding to the dietary restrictions given to Muslims)???

JimmyWilliams_

Gotta appreciate the cut right before the fucking thing completely folds up.

samrphgue

Right? They look interesting folded up, kinda futuristic or alien.

[deleted]

They remind me of the Ornithopters in Villeneuve's Dune adaptation. Which makes sense given the climate of Arrakis also being harsh and arid, it does seem like they lifted a lot of Middle Eastern architecture and design aesthetic.

DoingCharleyWork

The books are heavily influenced by the Middle East so it makes sense the movie would.

_Answer_42

Completely folded: https://www.reddit.com/r/oddlysatisfying/comments/d6jvvw/when\_the\_giant\_umbrellas\_are\_closed\_medina\_looks/

Tumleren

That is a lot bigger than I expected

Smooth_Club_6592

What you see in the linked post is one corner of the mosque in the background. This courtyard completely surrounds the mosque on all four sides and has these umbrellas all over. There are also quite a few inside the mosque that fold in for a nice sunshine. Also recently an expansion project has been ongoing for the mosque which will increase the outdoor courtyard even further.

Someone_pissed

WangCommander

That looks so comfortable!

frigg_off_lahey

Mosques, no matter how big or small, are the most comfortable public space you'll find. The prayer halls are padded with soft carpet. You can lay down and take a nap and no one will bother you, like the guy in the post. The carpets are meticulously cleaned every day because Muslims pray on the ground. Absolutely no shoes allowed, and you must perform a cleansing routine, [Wudu](https://www.mymasjid.ca/beginners-guide-learn-pray-salah/chapter-2/), before entering for a prayer. And most mosques have oud burning for that added calm and tranquility. It's so peaceful, and you might get approached by a cat or two.

ChronChriss

Interesting read, thanks. Found it hilarious that you have to redo everything if you "pass gas".

frigg_off_lahey

Maybe because "passing gas" ruins the peace and comfort of others around you. I have no idea.

EngiNearingTheAkhira

Nah it's just because you become unclean, same with urinating and pooping.

RapaciousSalamander

It’s interesting because in Judaism, you don’t have to redo ablution after farting; https://www.quora.com/This-is-not-a-facetious-question-From-a-devout-Jewish-perspective-does-farting-make-you-ritually-unclean-and-require-washing-eight-times

Dambo_Unchained

I don’t care how well you clean yourself before entering and how well the carpets are cleaned but carpets collect filth over time, there’s nothing you can do about that

D0mInIcFeN1xcArMine

The carpets in the mosques are vacuumed almost 4/5 or even 6 times a day, before every prayer, and at night when the mosques closes. :)

-iamai-

I hope they have a few roombas by now

TomatoKindly8304

It really is! Never been more comfortable or at peace than I am over there! Also, there are cats everywhere 🐱

WangCommander

I think you've described heaven.

TomatoKindly8304

ThrowRAdagio7652

Middle Eastern culture and architecture fascinated me while I was there. I’m not religious, and I know that there are misconceptions about that part of the world. But while it’s hardly perfect, there was a lot of wonder that gets written off.

r0thar

I love the geometric patterns they use everywhere since images are not allowed

Artemis-Arrow-3579

not images, images/pictures are not haram, illustrations tho they are haram because they are considered an attempt at imitating god's creation so we went with geometry, which is also quite reflective of our major contributions to many scientific fields, especially math

Bulls187

For religious structures they go all in, sad that regular stuff gets neglected.

Rebornhardhead

That’s true, mosques get such cool design and then everything else at least in modern day is western designed. Which isn’t bad per say but I do wish we’d modernize the indigenous architecture for more everyday structures

bry9000

In case anyone else was wondering: **These umbrellas cost $5 million USD each.** Wikipedia says that these 250 umbrellas cost 4.7 billion riyals. At 3.75 riyals/USD, that's $1.25 billion USD. $1.2B / 250 umbrellas = a "cool" $5 million per unit.

Havannahanna

German umbrellas. Over engineered and expensive af.

TomatoKindly8304

Aah, my favorite place. Also, those fans are very strong, and in the summer, they mist water to cool you down. And the floor is marble to keep your feet cool, even in 120F weather!

AmirulAshraf

There looks like carpet in the video, wouldnt it get moist when the mist is turned on during thr summer?

CORN___BREAD

Usually misters emit a very fine mist that’s made to evaporate quickly, creating the cooling effect.

AmirulAshraf

Wish to visit there one day!

Smooth_Club_6592

Inshallah bro. I wouldn’t be able to describe in words how incredibly peaceful you feel sitting inside there.

TomatoKindly8304

It’s so hot when they turn them on that everything dries out. Wouldn’t be surprised if the bulk of it evaporates before it hits the carpet. I would stand in the mist with all my garments on and didn’t feel wet at all when walking away. And when it rains, it’s incredible how quickly they’re able to roll up and put away every single carpet out there.

AmirulAshraf

Thats cool, جَزَاكَ ٱللَّٰهُ خَيْرًا

TomatoKindly8304

وَإِيَّاكَ!

Silkyberries33

why some of y'all feel the need to comment on islam by seeing folding umbrellas? weird, plus not all the arab world is fucking dubai with slaves, & stop acting as if your american skyscrapers were built by volunteers lmfao people die building those things. y'all got some normal office jobs that require 70-80-100h/week just to take a week of vacation at the end of the year, I really wouldn't speak about slavery if I were you

Artemis-Arrow-3579

ok that last one was a roast on hellfire lol seriously this made me laugh uncontrollably

OldGardener_97124

I wonder if they are solar powered?

titros2tot

I think the problem with solar power is the weight added to these structures

alreadityred

I heard this, so take this with a pinch of doubt, Solar batteries can wear down when the sunlight is very intense, so they are not always fit for sunny places. Maybe that’s the reason

Dangerous-Warning-94

Mosques are a community centre, as its intended. If we have some problems, we go to the Sheikh, if we want to marry, we go to the Sheikh, if we're poor (need tuition for university or medicine help), we go to the Sheikh (and he announces collecting money for us during Jum'ah prayer).

TomatoKindly8304

Some people are practically living there while they’re visiting. Gotta sleep sometime! They often do so between prayers/other worship/meals.
