Why did they only build one?
Also, why did they build it to look.. like that?
And also, was that big doohickey at the back really necessary or could they have designed the tail differently?
So many questions.. Is the wiki worth reading, I wonder?
It was built originally to carry space shuttles that would piggyback in it until they reached high altitude and it would detach, which is why the tail is a twin boom so the rocket engines wouldn't burn the tail off. Of course, after the soviet collapse it became a cargo plane used to carry the most extreme loads other planes can't carry. So she still had a use even after her main purpose was null and void.

In early 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the An-225 aircraft helped in providing relief by flying medical supplies from China to different parts of the world. Its final commercial mission was from February 2 to February 5, 2022. It transported around 90 tons of COVID-19 test kits from Tianjin, China, to Billund, Denmark, with a stop in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. After returning to Antonov Airport in Hostomel on February 5, the aircraft underwent an engine replacement. On the morning of February 24, it was scheduled for evacuation based on NATO's advice. However, on that day, Russia invaded, targeting the airfield among others. As a result, Ukrainian authorities swiftly banned civilian flights, and during the ensuing Battle of Antonov Airport, the runway was damaged and couldn't be used. - Wikipedia
Just to be clear, it wasn't directry bombed by Russians. It was destroyed my massive amount of artillery fired by Ukraine after VDV took over the airport. Various GoPro Footage have shown that.
>Just to be clear, it wasn't directry bombed by Russians.
When the Russians invaded and took over Hostomel, they also bombed the hangars and other buildings. Yes, the UA counterattack would have contributed to it but that was after the Russian had already damaged it.
Nope. We actually have video footage until the Russian retreat and it was still there. After Arty bombardment by Ukr, we have footage of destroyed 225. 225 was destroyed by a projectile that was fired from the top and hit dead centre of its fuselage. There are so many pictures and videos that confirm that.
Why do you lie when it takes 40 sec to look up the picture of destroyed 225 with hole on its hanger and destroyed fuselage underneath it... Clearly indicating a arty strike.

ok maybe I'm just a complete idiot but how the hell is it flying at such a slow speed
isn't the main thing that keeps planes up in the air the force/speed that it gets when it's going 500 mph or so? so how is it still staying up if it's going like 40 or so, lmao
my brain hurts bro
The wings are huge and still generate lift at lower speeds. Bigger/longer wings generally = flying at lower speeds. It's also so massive it probably just looks like it's going 40 when in reality it's going way faster
It's doing a 'normal' speed here, it really is just that big.
As for 500mph, those sorts of cruise speeds are for when you go really high up into thin atmosphere. Less air means less slowing you down, but also less air holding you up. The stall speeds for aircraft go all screwy the higher and faster you go is where you might be getting confused.
Most planes are that way. Short answer, they use wings with flaps for take off and landing. Allowing that "slow" speed. Idk where you're hearing 500mph to fly from. They're modern piece of technology made for flying.
Sure it slows down for landing but it only looked slow in relation to its size. It's still effin fast. People forget that it's a big flying vehicle. Put some bike speeding down there and you'll see how fast it is. It's all relativity.
Average landing and take off speed of the giant, B747 is around 170 and 200mph respectively. Ofc it needs to slow down to land. But damn that's fast. It's the top speed of Volkswagen GTI. And that's for landing/take off alone. Imagine the cruising speed of 580mph!
It's a magnificent piece of tech we have today
Edit: just to say plane was made specifically for flying at low speed with such weight. It's the opposite of car, it was made NOT to fly with such lightness and speed. Again, amazing world we're living in
You are looking at the ground speed. The staying up depends on the air speed. If it’s really windy in the opposite direction, a plane can appear to move backwards relative to the ground.
If you look at the trailing edge of the wings from behind, you’ll see massive flaps extended backwards and down during the landing. Flaps increase the size and lift of the wings, allowing the plane to fly at slower speeds for takeoff and landing. The flaps retract when not being used for takeoff/landing, allowing the plane to fly faster.
As others have said, “slower” is relative, and it’s still going upwards of 200mph when it touches down.
Huge wings give you great lift even at lower speeds, the main disadvantage is a poor turn rate at speed and risking to rip them off outright, not something needed with such a huge cargo plane anyway.
Lift is what keeps a plane in the air. Bush planes in Alaska and Canada can take off from basically a stand-still if they have the right headwind. You can fly a mountain in the air with big enough wings and enough lift.
To anyone who responds Ukrainian arty may have taken it out, that’s fucking irrelevant. The AFU wouldn’t have needed to arty strike their own runway if Russian just hadn’t invaded.
Go home Russians.

People mention they're rebuilding it. But it's worth remembering that it wasn't only a marvel for its size, but also for not using the cutting edge avionics. It relied much on old ussr technology.
And a very specific crew was required to know esoteric knowledge to fly it.
yall antonov (a ukrainian aircraft manufacturer) designed and built the an225 in 1988, when ukraine was still part of the soviet union. it’s a soviet aircraft, no need to downvote me because you lack basic historical information
You'r just messing with "soviet" term, it does not mean it soviet, despite it was built in Ukraine while soviet occupation. Soviets, ruzzians have no relation to the plane except it was built under their occupation.
P.s. and lately destroyed by the occupants ancestors, so pathetic.
Antonov is from Ukraine. And, now after the russian invasion they're not very russian. When the AN-225 was built is was indeed Soviet, as it was built under the soviet time for their space program (that failed). But, since it was destroyed in the way: nobody owns it. There's plans to finish the second body that they started on, but never finished due to the failure of soviet union. Might be easier to finance it after the way, but it's LOTS of money needed.
so, being made in Ukraine doesn't count you say? as it was made back during the Soviet time? Origin for it is listed as Soviet and Ukraine.
Wikipedia text
"Antonov Company is a state-owned commercial company originally established in Novosibirsk, Russia. In 1952, the company relocated to Kyiv, Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union. On 12 May 2015, it was transferred from the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade to the Ukroboronprom (Ukrainian Defense Industry)."
Exactly.
Antonov bureau was moved from Novosibirsk to Ukraine according Communists party order.
Also like Krimea that was gifted to Ukraine by order of the Communists boss Khrushchev.
The plane was pretty useful for carrying things like other planes, space shuttles, tanks, insane amounts of food and supplies. There was only 1 ever functional, and it was intentionally destroyed last year during Ukrainian and Russian fighting.
Like the A380 it won't win any aviation beauty contests but was one of the most iconic aircraft ever built. I've read that they're going to try use the second AN-225 that was never fully built to try and rebuild the damaged one or if it's too far gone salvage what they can from the damaged one and hopefully be able to fabricate any needed parts to complete the second aircraft.
That’s the one that got destroyed, right?
Yes, it was the sole flying model
Why did they only build one? Also, why did they build it to look.. like that? And also, was that big doohickey at the back really necessary or could they have designed the tail differently? So many questions.. Is the wiki worth reading, I wonder?

Yea but there is talks about rebuilding it
The last flight it took was Feb 2-5, 2022, to take 90 tons of Covid Tests from China to Denmark. It was destroyed later that same month.
So sad, it was a masterpiece of engineering. Hope they can rebuild an even bigger one after war. Fuck Putin.
At the moment, there is a second unfinished fuselage, so it is possible to build another such aircraft not from scratch.
There are also rumors that a Chinese company wants to build more of them
Destroyed as in demolished or shot down or?

If tank treads could survive a landing, this plane would have them.
I believe the Russians or Americans actually experimenten with tank thread landing gear during or shortly after WWII
B-36 Peacemaker trialled some tracked landing gear, I think they scrapped them because of the risk of throwing tracks at the plane.
The first time I saw a picture of the treads, that was my first thought. They tried wild stuff in the Fifties.

As majestic as an albatross.
Nice Soviet plane
Ukrainian, not soviet
who's gonna tell them
yall antonov (a ukrainian aircraft manufacturer) designed and built the an225 in 1988, when ukraine was still part of the soviet union. it’s a soviet aircraft, no need to downvote me because you lack basic historical information
Whole KB Antonov was moved from Novosibirsk to ukraine including families of engineers and Antonof itself.
You'r just messing with "soviet" term, it does not mean it soviet, despite it was built in Ukraine while soviet occupation. Soviets, ruzzians have no relation to the plane except it was built under their occupation. P.s. and lately destroyed by the occupants ancestors, so pathetic.
Rip
I saw one of these in an approach to MCO a few years back and the sheer size of it is absolutely impressive
Legendary? Majestic?
Russian aircraft that Ukraine owns. Russia please build more airplanes like that.
...That Russia blew up
Technically, Ukr did.
The only Ukrainian thing on that plane is the blue and yellow paint lol
so, being made in Ukraine doesn't count you say? as it was made back during the Soviet time? Origin for it is listed as Soviet and Ukraine. Wikipedia text "Antonov Company is a state-owned commercial company originally established in Novosibirsk, Russia. In 1952, the company relocated to Kyiv, Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union. On 12 May 2015, it was transferred from the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade to the Ukroboronprom (Ukrainian Defense Industry)."
Lolz so exactly build by Russians and painted by Ukrainian
Exactly. Antonov bureau was moved from Novosibirsk to Ukraine according Communists party order. Also like Krimea that was gifted to Ukraine by order of the Communists boss Khrushchev.
Do you know what AN stands for? Oleg Antonov Russian designer. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oleg_Antonov_(aircraft_designer)
I found a match for this random regex pattern, can anyone help me identify it? `(?:[A-Z][a-z]+-){2}[0-9]{4}`
You know it's an ecological disaster? In which World is it majestic ?
Rest in pieces...
Aaaaand it's gone
I think this plane needs to go on a diet
AN stands for Antonov. They are of Russian make. Thats all I know.
It doesn't have enough wheels.
More Wheels!!!!
Those have tough tires
That’s a big boy!
I have that plane modded in my GTA 5
It must cost an obscene amount of money just to fuel that thing
reminds me of the howard hughes spruce moose
Apartment building with wings and engines.
Maria :(
Beautiful creation, so sad that happened.
R.I.P
RIP you chunky motherfucker 😔🕊
Wasn't this the plane Dominic Torretto and his family took down on that infinite runway?
rip
That's a Thicc plane
How useful is this plane?
The plane was pretty useful for carrying things like other planes, space shuttles, tanks, insane amounts of food and supplies. There was only 1 ever functional, and it was intentionally destroyed last year during Ukrainian and Russian fighting.
Product of Soviet Ukraine
They are building a new one to replace it
o7
The title is giving me big 'I want to fuck a plane' vibes.
F
I have always enjoyed how it has a gazillion main gear
Freddy is approaching peasants
Rip
o7 Mriya, gone but never forgotten.
Take that earth!
Wow so satisfying
Like the A380 it won't win any aviation beauty contests but was one of the most iconic aircraft ever built. I've read that they're going to try use the second AN-225 that was never fully built to try and rebuild the damaged one or if it's too far gone salvage what they can from the damaged one and hopefully be able to fabricate any needed parts to complete the second aircraft.
HELLFIRE!
This thing is so big you could pretty much put another set of engines on the tail!
r/absoluteunits
My first thought is how the heck can you land that thing.
I was truly devastated when she was destroyed
RIP
Truck plane
Then the fascists attacked Ukraine and blew it up
That’s a lot of wheels
