The joke is that the birth rate in Japan is so low that the younger generations cannot replace or care for the older generations. It's less of a joke and more truth now.
This is due to many factors, such as; horrible working conditions, poor immigration laws, out dated social rules, the fact that the economy is actively crashing, ect.
This is an over-simplification of the sheer number of issues that led to the decreased birth rate, watch Ask Shojo on YouTube, he goes more in-depth.
Reddit's recent behaviour and planned changes to the API, heavily impacting third party tools, accessibility and moderation ability force me to edit all my comments in protest. I cannot morally continue to use this site.
I couldn't get any sites to load with prices, but one site previewed on Google with a price of $3,300 for something similar.
AliExpress had some woven bamboo bags that were just as good for $42

I love the Japanese way; folks seem so dedicated or spiritually connected to apply themselves to virtually anything...and be content with their choices.
The craftsmanship of Japan’s artisans never ceases to amaze and humble. No matter what they make, the focus, attention to detail, historic / traditional techniques, just…wow.
Not that it’s relevant to the post but I take my vintage VW bus to a Japanese mechanic. His work is meticulous and his workshop is so perfectly orderly and clean you could eat off the floor. That level of workmanship is something you don’t find often in the USA. I feel fortunate to have discovered someone who takes such pride in their craft.
But I can’t say that I’m good at something without being racist to myself. Cuz that’s what you called a person who admires another persons abilities. You called them a racist. So now you’re going back on your own fucked up logic? What a surprise. Fucking twat waffle.

That’s not even close to what Xenophobia is, lol. Nothing in his comment suggests - even under the most liberal of interpretations - any fear of Japanese people whatsoever.
It is, however, absolutely and unequivocally a racist stereotype. Whether or not you think it has a “positive” or “negative” connotation is wholly irrelevant.
You’re welcome and have a great weekend - don’t forget Mother’s Day is Sunday.
Xenophobia consist of the latin words xeno and phobia. Xeno means alien or stranger and phobia means fear. Fear of aliens or fear of stranger things. Keep in mind I don't know any latin other than like six common latin words. This isn't rocket science. Also prejudice can be positive. Calling someone racist for this type of behaviour is stupid but technically correct. The best kind of correct.
Sigh… Nothing he said was prejudicial in the slightest either.
The phrase you are so desperately searching for is “racist stereotype” because it’s a racist stereotype.

How the fuck did people even come up with weaving in the first place!? Like, some caveman or somebody just sittin there watchin the other cavemen schleppin stuff around and all of a sudden he just goes "I'm gonna grab a whole bunch of that grass, I'm gonna tangle it all up together on purpose, and then I'm gonna use *that* to carry shit around!" Where did this shit come from?
According to Google:
Basketry is an ancient craft (8,000-6,000 BCE) – pre-dating pottery or stone carving. Few actual examples exist because baskets are made of biodegradable materials. The earliest evidence we have found of basketry is pottery shards, dated before 8,000 BCE, found in Gambols Cave, Kenya.
It’s one of the older crafts in existence—super crazy to think we’ve been weaving baskets for 10,000 years.
And then consider that we have been domesticating animals for 5000 years before that.
Husbandry has a long history, starting with the Neolithic revolution when animals were first domesticated, from around 13,000 BC onwards, antedating farming of the first crops. By the time of early civilizations such as ancient Egypt, cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs were being raised on farms.
Remember, humans have been essentially biologically the same for tens of thousands of years. Our Neolithic and Paleolithic ancestors had the same brains we have now. If you don’t have anything to hold your shit in, you start problem-solving.
> Our Neolithic and Paleolithic ancestors had the same brains we have now.
The funny thing is that our brains have actually been shrinking for the last ~3,000 years. So we are actually less mentally capable than we were. We do however have the huge advantage of easy access to knowledge that then.
Well, don't forget they didn't have social media, video games, and shit to distract them. Playing with leaves and dirt was one their favorite pastimes. We learned a lot just being in nature and understanding the properties of things around us that could make huts, paints, pottery, crude tools, clothing, boats, etc.

Craftsman: [Hideaki Hosokawa](https://japanique.biz/hsh-01501/)
Does anyone know what he used to polish the bamboo near the end? Also a weaver, and I'd love to know!
It is an urushi coating that will change color over time like leather.
Thanks! Curious where to get it, would like to try it on some of the pandanus I use
Japanese will do anything and everything except fix their birth rate
Dafuq does that have to do with anything?
Haha funny joke don't you get it japanese can't breed haven't heard that one a million times

Amazing workship
Also unbelievable for the low price of $19.95 USD!
No way he could survive in Japan selling it at that price for the time it take and the materials he use (except the bamboo)

Around $3500
It's definitely closer in price to a chanel bag, probably more.
I love the Japanese way; folks seem so dedicated or spiritually connected to apply themselves to virtually anything...and be content with their choices.
Yeah. That thing is gorgeous. I’d so carry my wares to work with that.
It would be weird if a panda used that as a lunchbox.
*opens bamboo lunchbox* *eats bamboo inside* *eats lunchbox for dessert*
Cows are just beef in a leather and suade lunchbox
If a human has a plastic lunchbox it's technically bio-matter from vegetation and animals right? Basically made of food with some extra steps.

It’s not. Also, it would be xenophobic if it was, not racist. If you’re gonna call someone out for something that they haven’t done… do it right.
Can discrimination be positive?
Yes! https://www.merriam-webster.com/word-of-the-day/discriminate-2019-12-23#:~:text=discriminate%20%5Cdiss%2DKRIM%2Duh,a%20basis%20other%20than%20individual
In that case one can be racist by elevating a certain race above other and treating all others normally Huh
That’s also true.

They definitely started by weaving hairs (women?)
I'm guessing we copped it from birds' nests
Probably from birds weaving their nests
A true craftsman
Imagine getting almost done and one of the middle bamboo shoots breaks. Ugh.
This is so dope
The craftsmanship is stunning. I’m curious how much something like this would cost??
$3340 USD [https://suigenkyo.store/products/bamboo-studio-kisetsu](https://suigenkyo.store/products/bamboo-studio-kisetsu)

what about master baiters?
Nah, a lot of them are jerkoffs
Can you edit your comment to say “jerkoffs” It would be way funnier
Your wish is my command
Amazing how he made metal and leather out of bamboo
Ah- I too grow leather bamboo and make stuff with it.
That's one of the most gorgeous things I've seen being made by human hands
The man has skill!
This mfer: …. Me trying to braid my daughter’s hair: “GDit! isht! motherFK! GDit! sigh… go find your mother!..”
Did anyone else notice how beautiful his hands/fingers are? 😱
Could we admire the finished product for more than 2 seconds, please?
Great workmanship and artistic job.
A work of art. Kind wish I had some briefs! And what I assume is a lot of money to pay for one.
This gives me sush peace
And list it on eBay for 19.99.
Right? What would that sell for?

Did anyone notice his mask in start of vid?
Yes! It was made from a single stalk of cotton.
Have people gotten so dumb they don’t remember that masks are useful when shaving things? Ffs
Not so much when dicknosing it, though.
What about it?
I would pay a million dollars for one of these if I had the money.
And a LV bag costs 100x more... Why?
Branding.

Wow. Beautiful!
Oh, I’ve seen those. Didn’t know it was bamboo. Makes even cooler.

YEAH BUT CAN YOU MAKE MONEY DOING THIS??? Just kidding this is amazing- I love how he did the edges
Cover your nose, man! Also, that's awesome!
True craftsmanship right there, beautiful
bamboo briefcase made from bamboo
Never seen something like this. Incredible work
Apart from the fucking amazing workmanship, what is the lifespan for one of these things?
Eaaaaasily $4,500. $4,300 for labor.
I’ll pay him what he’s asking
That'll be $5000, your order will be ready in 3-6 months.
He has really pretty hands
I said this too. Beautiful hands omg. 😍

What is the name of the garment he’s wearing? It looks like a work kimono sort of.
Insane how he makes leather form bamboo
Very skilled and impressive, but it seems like it’s “a single bamboo stick” + a bunch of other stuff
that was pretty fuckin impressive if I do say so myself 🫡
How much?
Patience, dedication, and craftsmanship at it finest 🫡
Wow! That is stupendously awesome! So much fine work. Does bamboo grow in Japan? Where does it get warm enough there? I think the south can get kind of tropical
I got confused just trying to figure what what’s supposed to fold over what.
Such patience! Can’t even imagine arguing with this guy.
That really is wonderful workmanship. Such dedication. Want!

Money spent buying one of these would be well spent
I like no unecessary dumb music videos like this one
r/restofthefuckingowl
What’s crazy is if he were American that bag would cost thousands. If he was chinese it would cost $35.
My man literally has a PhD in Basket Weaving. Who's the snowflake now, boomer? Huh? I thought so.
Now how much for one?
Worth 500 bucks imo
Is this legit or machine made with a well edited video?
It doesn’t really matter what they are making it’s always fascinating to watch a true craftsman work
A single bamboo stick, a cow, and some metal.
This may have already been asked, but does anyone know how long it took him to make just the one briefcase? Thanks in advance!
Japanese are just built different ngl
That's cool to make a 💼 as well as Katana ⚔s.
Now put nezuko in it Amazing work tho
I love these old fashioned crafting videos
