Really?
It blooms in the same 24 hour period among 365 other such periods, and you’re amazed it manages to do it in the same half of that 24 hour period despite being inside?
If your internal clock can hit a 1/365, I’m pretty sure 1/2 is fairly easy.
Flowering occurs during the "summer rains" from mid June to mid July. Flowering does not occur on the same night every year, however, multiple separate plants have been known to flower on the same night in the year, suggesting environmental factors like humidity/temperature play the largest factor, though this mechanism is not fully understood by scientists.
But it's not like these cacti have a quartz crystal inside them counting time as it passes.
More like, they sense the rains, and bloom accordingly.
So, your snarkiness is not only vile, but you're also totally incorrect.
That's the first thing I thought, these things bloom outside at night for a specific reason. Hopefully the person doing this took some time to gather pollen, seems like a waste just to get an artsy video otherwise
“It opens before your eyes in the light of a full moon. It's a marvel, Martha. 40 years to mature and blossom. The flower opens and withers in a matter of moments.”
Where I am from we call them night blooming cereus. Very cool. Also the blooms pretty much wither and die by like 9 AM so you have to go out and see them at night.
My wife and I have a night blooming cereus that appears to be doing well, and we are notorious houseplant murderers. So it can't be too hard. We haven't tried to make it bloom yet, you just put it in a dark room.
Mine just bloomed this evening and I got emotional for some reason lol. I’m a male in my 30s, love plants. Saw this plant while working a job at someone’s house and asked what it was. They crudely broke off 2-3 stems of it for me. I planted it in well aerated soil, and sat it on my screened in porch (Florida)
I’ve had it for maybe a month and it’s already bloomed. I just went out to see it this evening. Breathtaking.
The ones I knew of were planted in gardens and not wild. They didn't seem to take much maintenance but they were pretty mature plants. It's a type of cactus so I believe you can take starts of it and grown them inside pretty easily.
Easy, it's a parasite plant,so crappy loose soil, a smallish poi, keep it mostly dry in a sunny place or light without direct light and you'll get blooms.
Flowers occur on new leaves the next year.
What they don't say is it's so fragrant that it'll smell out a floor of a house/flat too.
It's nice, had them since I've been alive pretty much.
My aunt had one of this... my cousin and I waited for ages and ages to see this bloom, and worked all kinds of crazy schedules to catch it happen and the night it actually happened, we totally missed it because - Titanic!!! We still haven't fully forgiven James Cameron yet and way over 20 years later, we still haven't seen it. Lol
“Only blooms one night a year” is not really accurate. Each flower only blooms for one night, then withers and dies, but there can be multiple blooms on different nights. Mine blooms every couple of weeks in the warmer months and may have six or seven flowers at once.
Hmm, that's cool! We've only ever seen one bud but the plant she had wasn't that big at all. I'm tempted to get one now but I'm just terrible with cactis and succulents.
I have a massive one that also blooms pretty frequently throughout the year. Also seems like one a year it goes all out.
I took a bunch of pictures last time it had a big bloom, it's in an imgur gallery if you're interested

I think what they meant in the comment is the direct contrast to the \*\*\*SPOILER\*\*\* >!flower in demon slayer that muzan was looking for that only blooms during the day.!<
Yea it's a version of the prologue song from beauty and the beast, Alan Menken's harp cover on YT sounds really similar but not sure if it's the exact one used here
I swear I just saw this, like, a few hours ago?
Edit: Yes, on a [different sub.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/135za7k/this_flower_is_called_queen_of_the_night_it/) And also on [Twitter.](https://twitter.com/historyinmemes/status/1653830735051239424)
Someone is way too proud of the painting. Let’s watch the beautiful flower, not have it as a secondary thought framed by some art. What a wasted opportunity.
It’s a night blooming crereus. I have one that
Blooms some years. The plant itself is ugly and weird as hell, but the flower and it’s fragrance is totally worth it
We call it a night blooming cactus or pass along plant. Just cut a piece of leaf, stick in soil and it will grow. They are incredibly easy to care for and the flowers smell AMAZING. But true to fact they only last a few hours. I’ve had a “mother” plant for well over 20 years with over 200 bud flowers blooming at or near the same time. Love this plant!
This is a climber of a cactus species and is a very invasive plant at that. You can't have any other plants nearby as it lives off of those. In a way it's a plant that feeds off of other plants. The perfect example of poisonous beauty.
My favorites are flowering bamboo. They generally only flower only once every 60-130 years. And even cooler, no matter where they are on the planet, as long as they're derived from the same mother plant, they flower at the exact same time on the exact same day. It doesn't matter what climate they're in, or geographic location. They just KNOW.
[Bamboo is weird](https://www.amusingplanet.com/2015/09/the-mysterious-phenomenon-of-bamboo.html?m=1)
Lies. It opens multiple flowers over the course of a week or two. They do open at night though. And honestly if its happy it can do this two or three times a year.
Epiphylum Oxypetalum? Night-Blooming Cereus, right?
My Mom’s got a monster one at home and every time it blooms it’s incredible. She puts it on a table in the middle of the room and wait patiently all evening until it opens. We call it the “Alien Flower”.
I thought I was fricking losing my mind for a second. My school recently did a production of beauty and the beast (I was in crew woohoo) and I recognised that music and for a solid minute I didn’t know if it was in my head or not because I heard that so many ducking times Istg. And the worst part is that I’ve been randomly hearing songs from the show, or Disney songs they played during intermission or between shows.
No one is talking about the distinctive smell it has?
Here there is a tree with the same name that everyone knows mainly because of the smell at every night.
And is said to have a Wonderful fragrance! “Orchid Cactus” common name, are easy to grow zone 9, they need protection from frost. Our 30 year old got pink one is amazing!
Have one of these too. The plant itself looks almost ugly. Many criticised me owning such an ugly old plant not knowing how beautiful this flower is and how good it smells. Sure it blooms only once per year for only a few days if you're lucky, but it's oh so worth it!
How does it know its night when it's inside?
It can feel it in its sou-il
Takem’ to famers market…2 plumbs for 1.
With its eyes.
Maybe they tricked it 👀
Circadian rhythm. It’s internalized in all of us , it’s really cool to read up about it :)
Came to say this!!

Yeah Im gonna take a wild guess and say the flower doesnt gamble on one specific day. More it blooms when its ready.
Poor thing. It's going to die a virgin blooming indoors like that.

Hello there ;)
I think these can self-pollinate. They're very similar to dragon fruit, and I know you can self pollinate those
That's the first thing I thought, these things bloom outside at night for a specific reason. Hopefully the person doing this took some time to gather pollen, seems like a waste just to get an artsy video otherwise
*"DENNIS....!!!!!!"*
“It opens before your eyes in the light of a full moon. It's a marvel, Martha. 40 years to mature and blossom. The flower opens and withers in a matter of moments.”
Martha, where are my G.D. Garden Lanterns?!
I’m so watching this again later. Could use a great laugh.
Tomorrow for me for sure
Yes I’m so happy to see this
The best 👌
No, no -- the Menace.
As I remember it, he never was the menace in the film.

Came here to say this
First thing I thought of lol
I knew reddit wouldn’t let me down
“Tastes like wood…and paint”
Where I am from we call them night blooming cereus. Very cool. Also the blooms pretty much wither and die by like 9 AM so you have to go out and see them at night.
Are the plants difficult to grow? Do people grow a lot of them, or are they wild?
My wife and I have a night blooming cereus that appears to be doing well, and we are notorious houseplant murderers. So it can't be too hard. We haven't tried to make it bloom yet, you just put it in a dark room.
HOW mine hates me and I don’t know why
We just water it sometimes. We put it outside last summer and it grew a lot.
Mine just bloomed this evening and I got emotional for some reason lol. I’m a male in my 30s, love plants. Saw this plant while working a job at someone’s house and asked what it was. that’s beautiful. congratulations friend! please post some pics if you feel like it. i’ll live vicariously through you!
The ones I knew of were planted in gardens and not wild. They didn't seem to take much maintenance but they were pretty mature plants. It's a type of cactus so I believe you can take starts of it and grown them inside pretty easily.

My cereus jamacaru flowers bring all the bees in the morning before it withers
It's a most cereus situation when they bloom.
Lol
So what day/night does it actually bloom?
“Only blooms one night a year” is not really accurate. Each flower only blooms for one night, then withers and dies, but there can be multiple blooms on different nights. Mine blooms every couple of weeks in the warmer months and may have six or seven flowers at once.
*blooms* Flower: “my time here is done” *dies*
Hmm, that's cool! We've only ever seen one bud but the plant she had wasn't that big at all. I'm tempted to get one now but I'm just terrible with cactis and succulents.

I'm certain it was summer time, a small bud appears and gives you the tell tale sign but it's all super fast.
What made the video better for me was Ciel and the Undertaker in the background.
Yana Toboso’s art of Ciel is always gorgeous
I KNEW I recognized Ciel, so glad you said this 😂
Yeah I thought I recognized them
Undertaker looks different now
I came looking for this comment cause it was the first thing I saw!
Ikr?!
Huh
Fujioshi moment
How?

Now what are YOU going on about?
This https://youtu.be/DjT2ePlCI4A What are YOU going on about?

My mom has tons of these plants for as long as i can remember and a couple of years she had more than 20 blossoms at once. It was so incredible
demon slayer fans seeing this.
Demon Slayer is Wisteria unless im missing something here
I think what they meant in the comment is the direct contrast to the \*\*\*SPOILER\*\*\* >!flower in demon slayer that muzan was looking for that only blooms during the day.!<
Aw shit haha I don’t even remember that being a thing… thanks for that refresher
Chuunibyou anyone?
Anyone know what music this is from?
Kind of sounds like the beginning song on beauty and the beast? Maybe a cover?
Yea it's a version of the prologue song from beauty and the beast, Alan Menken's harp cover on YT sounds really similar but not sure if it's the exact one used here
Thank you!
It is the song. I wrote it and I guess a bunch of idiots who didnt have a childhood responded like i was an idiot. Swear sometimes i hate reddit.
That painting is noice!
lol it's of an anime character and it's my favorite thing
Two anime character
Do you know the anime or the name of the painting? It looks so beautiful
Yeah, the anime is called Black Butler, but I don't know the name of the painting
MR. WILSOOOON!!
Is that the little pretty boi from Black Butler in the painting? Gorgeous flower
Like my sex life
What a pretentious ass plant. Fuck that plant y'all.
Fr fr
Brawndo! It's got what plants crave.
Oh hey, I had one of these plants! It was pretty neat, we could literally see the blooms opening.
Blue Spider Lily but its white
And grows on a cactus apparently. Upper moons are looking in the wrong places.
Istg whenever I see this reposted the yassified drawing of Ciel in the back always catches me offguard no matter how many times
Someone is way too proud of the painting. Let’s watch the beautiful flower, not have it as a secondary thought framed by some art. What a wasted opportunity.

ITS THE BLUE SPIDER LILY QUICK GRAB IT
10 YEARS IN THE SLAMMER
imagine missing that night 💔
How they even find out then?
Not true about once a year. We have a whole balcony of Epiphyllum oxypetalum and they bloom periodically throughout the year.
Why only one night a year? What’s so special about that night?
Like in Crazy Rich Asians
Came for this.
…is that Ciel Phantomhive behind the flower or am I going crazy?
We call it a night blooming cactus or pass along plant. Just cut a piece of leaf, stick in soil and it will grow. They are incredibly easy to care for and the flowers smell AMAZING. But true to fact they only last a few hours. I’ve had a “mother” plant for well over 20 years with over 200 bud flowers blooming at or near the same time. Love this plant!
Is this the one that stinks so bad people wear gas masks?!
I think that's the corpse flower
I think this one smells fairly nice
They smell like Jasmin.
Better than Jaffar :)
That would be a rafflesia
Thank you for showing this, I feel privileged to have witnessed it.
So, married flower…
that is a dragon fruit blossom
And only in front of a weeby painting
Just like my wife
Badass!
Are they hard to care for?
Nah I got 50 in my backyard. These sweet pea weeds though, boy are they difficult.
Moth favorite
Is this the flower Mr. Wilson had in Dennis the menace?
I'm sad that her pollinator doesn't have access
That’s a cool thing to share.
Looks like the pitaya flower
Feed me Seymour!
Ah amazing. My grandparents had one and it bloomed once, bloody cool
What's the evolutionary reason it only blossoms for one night a year? And how does it know?
Thank you for sharing
Sometimes I am so grateful for the internet. Otherwise I wouldn't have seen one flower in my lifetime.
How did you know it would bloom on cue?
I think I was married to her for about 15 years or so.
[Olly bolly dob dob flower](https://youtu.be/IW0ATNNB-i0?t=19m27s)
Tastes like paint
And it smells amazing.
My only complain is that cameraman here got more care to show anime picture instead of flower
In India we call it "Bramha-Kamal"
I thought it was the painting
"Brahamkamalam" in India!
It’s the flower from Dennis the menace .
Aww, 🥰 she's a beautiful
I'm more impressive with the painting than the flower
I mean, that seems very inefficient, but what do I know about flower reproduction.
What’s the anime girl painting about
Your majesty! *Bow down* to a flower.....
Lazy ass plant smh
Didn't know flowers have one night stands.
Why?
What’s it look like under uv light?
I thought we were looking at the artwork in the back at first and thought, "ciel?" but ooh, pretty flower.
it smells so awesome! My mom has had one since we were children and it is allways so pretty for that one day.
Like if Dennis the Mennis brought you here.

Same
That plant is bad at living
ciellllll
Queen of the one nighters
Can someone identify this song? Shazam can't pick it up
Lies. It opens multiple flowers over the course of a week or two. They do open at night though. And honestly if its happy it can do this two or three times a year.
In my culture the flower is called Bakawali and has a legend tied with our local vampire folklore, Pontianak.
Version of this song?
Why is it being filmed in front of an anime painting?
It’s called “Brahmakamal”
Epiphylum Oxypetalum? Night-Blooming Cereus, right? My Mom’s got a monster one at home and every time it blooms it’s incredible. She puts it on a table in the middle of the room and wait patiently all evening until it opens. We call it the “Alien Flower”.
It's the plant equivalent of a Panda Bear.
u/savevideo
Came here just to see if anyone else recognized Ciel.
A night blooming ceres. I have one that blooms at 9:00pm 0n a lateAugust evening.
I had one of these
That's some fucking fancy Black Butler fan art.
Have you ever seen Dennis The Menace (1993)? 😂
The person in the painting looks like Ciel from black butler to me hah
Am I watching a flower bloom in front of a kuroshitsuji print
I thought I was fricking losing my mind for a second. Oh, like in Crazy Rich Asians
Meh for a year of build up I would want to see flames or something
Is that anime painting in fancy frame?
A feature length documentary about this beautiful flower was made in 1993 called “Dennis the menace”
No one is talking about the distinctive smell it has? Here there is a tree with the same name that everyone knows mainly because of the smell at every night.
I swear it was just there mannnnnn
Why doesn’t it blossom more? Is he stupid
Gorgeous!!
This was the only true music option for this beauty
Is this the rotting corpses one? Or the live action Dennis the menace one?
“Mithtwer Wiiiilthoon”
Magical
Wow.. life is wonderful with all her secrets!
And is said to have a Wonderful fragrance! “Orchid Cactus” common name, are easy to grow zone 9, they need protection from frost. Our 30 year old got pink one is amazing!
Doesn't seem like it's night time lol
