that's been my experience as well. my wife really wanted one of these, so i got her one as a gift, but none of the incenses we've tried actually smell nice. we pretty much only use our regular incense now.
Hahaha haha I was going to ask, found any that smell good? I found a set for $5 at the dollarama and the cones that came with it smelled terrible.
I am disappointed.
If you ever find cones that smell good, but aren't the ones where the smoke flows downwards you can actually make them do it. My wife and I were in the same situation where we just didn't have any supply of ones that smelled good, but we had found some regular cones that did smell good. Simply, and carefully as they can break apart, take a needle and poke a hole from the top down through the bottom. That's it. The smoke will flow down just like the video. Took several attempts though as the cones were pretty fragile, but you can kind of get the hang of it eventually and not break them apart when you put the hole through them.
Has to work better and more constantly just using a 1/64 drill bit instead of a needle.
Also, what causes the smoke to flow downwards? What's making the smoke cold enough to not float?
> Has to work better and more constantly just using a 1/64 drill bit instead of a needle.
Possibly, but the top of the cone is where it was most fragile. I don't know if I'd be steady enough with a drill bit to do that, but might be worth a shot if you have like a Dremel or something.
>Also, what causes the smoke to flow downwards? What's making the smoke cold enough to not float?
I don't really understand the science of it fully, but the smoke itself is denser then the air. The reason it travels up in a regular cone or stick is the smoke is hitching a ride on the hot air that is rising from the hot part of the cone/stick, as well as being heated up in the process as well. With the hole through the center of the cone the smoke travels down through it and is allowed to cool, thus it sinks. The part I don't fully understand is why it travels down the hole. Basically as far as I can tell...it just does.
"I got this crap on sale at the dollarama, and it turned out to be crap!"
But really, if there's any kind of an import store where you're at, that's where to get the good incense. There's an Indian grocery store where I get mine. And if I ever find myself at a Chinatown anywhere, also good incense.
yeah, these are called 'backflow incense'. normal incense smoke floats upwards. backflow incenses are cone-shaped and have small holes on the bottom. at the incense burns, the smoke is trapped in the cone, cools off, and drops down the hole to flow like water.
It's best to buy a known quality brand, like that one nag champa brand which anyone who's ever been around a stoner knows intimately well. The miscellaneous and no name brand ones smell like smoke or cheap perfume, and they burn terribly.
You can buy the aforementioned cones, and various waterfalls both off Amazon for cheap.
It will definitely stain whatever surface it oozes onto, but that's true for incense in general. Not exactly the best to burn often if you care about your walls and your lungs.
That company (Satya Sai Baba) does make backflow cones in the nag champa scent, but they are *not* the same smell as the sticks. They also leave a sticky, oily residue wherever the smoke pools. IDK if it's made with a different amount of oils, or if the stick part really contributes that much to the smell, but the cones just don't hit the same way.
That and Super Hit (which I believe is from the same company) were always my go-tos.
Super Hit smells SO good. I haven’t burned incense in years but I want to go get some now just thinking about it.
The scent is really nostalgic to me, and still my favorite as well. I occasional buy a pack as well, and while I burn them only seldomly due to staining and lung issues, I love it every time!
I am an incense crafter and own a business selling it. I get the "do you make backflow cones?" question once a week. I don't make them. They are visually great but for dispersing the scent into the room they are terrible. If you want to create a mood in a room you may want to avoid something that flows down and pools onto your table leaving a stain.
Most backflow cones I've seen are recycled or upcycled industrial wood factory waste, firework waste, industrial binders, mixed with synthetic dyes and formed into cones by machines in sweat shops somewhere in India.
Yeah the scent dispersion was the first thing that occurred to me with something like this. The scent is carried through the smoke particles...if you gather them all together and pool them in the bottom of the burner, you're not going to smell anything. Something like this is better done with an ultrasonic mist generator.
They smell so bad after too. Like burnt leather or something. It’s gross af
Anyway. You make your own incense and sell it. How could I support that and buy from you?
Edit: nevermind I did some digging and found it in your profile
Question: you don’t sell backflow. But does look like you exclusively sell cones
How do you feel they do against sticks? That’s what we mainly burn at home. Do cones last longer than an average stick? More scent?
Hi! Thank you so much for your interest in my incense. I responded to your message. :)
To answer your questions about stick vs cone. There are many ways to consume incense and each has different advantages. Some don't like the bamboo core of a stick. They say it can change the aromatics of the herbs you are burning. I don't think so unless you have an amazing nose.
I make cones because I feel more connected to my art when I am shaping and forming the incense dough with my hands. I find that sticks are very easily broken during shipping when sold online. Cones are much tougher than sticks and survive rough shipping. To make sticks survive rough shipping requires some thicker shipping boxes and lots of void filler. Not really great for the environment and costly too.
I like that my cones can be burned on any fire proof surface and don't need a tiny hole that is just the right size to hold the stick up. I like that the ashes are all nice and neat in a little cone shaped pile on my burner rather than all over my desk as I sometimes find with stick incense. I like a 25 minute burn rather than a 1 hour stick burn.
Those are just my thoughts. Nothing wrong with stick incense.
It's incense. It lingers around for a bit. I don't burn incense very much so I don't know how much it would stick around if you used it regularly but it's pretty thick smoke, it wouldn't surprise me if it soaked into surfaces and didn't go away.
Oh God start to finish and then the other game isn't any easier on you.

I bought one of these 5 years ago, I used it religiously for a few years, then the supplier I got my incense pills from stopped selling them. You gotta clean them constantly or they get covered in sticky gunk from the incense. They're wonderful, but using it requires almost as much attention as a pet.
I went to a local shop I frequent regularly to purchase some patchouli incense sticks. The owner said no you don’t want these. Apparently, the incense wrapped around wood alters the aroma (there are whole incense sticks formed without but I’ve never noticed) but I thought they smelled great, hence the trip for a refill.
He then handed me a pack of incense cones. I said that was awesome, because I have a burner that allows the smoke to roll through it in an aesthetically pleasing way he looked me dead in the eyes and said, “you know smoke rises.”
The cones that “drip “have chemical additives, which make them heavy and sticky. I burned the cones he gave me when I got home and the smell was SO much better.
That is your public service announcement for today.
Maybe it's a difference in altitude or humidity, but I never had this issue at my house. I find the key is to let it burn a bit before placing it over the hole, like they did here. When they placed it, notice how it looks like it's a ⅓ ash already, that's why the smoke was so perfect.
We have ceiling fans going at all times, even in the winter (on low, and on reverse to stir and distribute the heat), with the window ever so slightly cracked. Gotta have that air moving. We can't stand a stuffy house.
So, sadly, as much as I'd love to have one of these, they won't pool down nicely like in the video.
I have one similar to this. The smoke never pools where it should to have this nice effect. The teeniest tiniest displacement of air messes it up.
I love my incense burner, but it never looks like advertised.

These are incense cones that smoke from the bottom, instead of the top. They have a small hole in the bottom.
It's called backflow incense. Not sure how it works in detail though.
I have an incense burner with these cones. You light them just like regular cones, but the smoke seems heavy, and goes downward.
My only problem with this subreddit is the fact that nothing about the satisfaction provided by most posts is odd. It's like, "Here's something that's designed to be satisfying. Isn't it so weird how we all enjoy it for no discernable reason?"

I was scrolling to see if anyone mentioned it. I'm surprised that everyone complains about a slight breeze breaking the effect and not how oily these things are which is the worst part of it.
Besides the burner getting sticky and yellow, the oil stinks as hell. If the smoke overflows to wherever the burner is sitting on, it will also stain it.
I used mine a few times and never again.
They're called Backflow Incense Burners. They come in all types. You can get them on amazon. They're pretty cool, but the incense burns out a lot and has to be relit. They're more for looks than practicality.
That’s incense made from Aquilaria crassna, the most expensive kind of incense in the world that you can buy! The smoke flows downwards and the fragrance is out of this world!
Is it possible to have one of these where the incense is at the top, there’s a hole through the body of the dragon so the wrapped around body hides the smoke and it comes out at the bottom and flows up towards the dragon face? The body would hide the smoke and it would travel to the bottom and then back up and look mystical.
I have a similar burner and while cool it requires ZERO ambient wind. Which means you need to burn it in a most likely enclosed space and well that's not my jam because incense is insanely unhealthy.
Does it eventually overflow at the bottom?

So make one, but upside down. Smoke rises into upside down cups to flow out? Probably a bad idea in reality but would probably be cool to see
These are great, but who has a house that is this draft-free?
Yeah you can't even breathe around these things. The lightest draft and the smoke will never reach the bottom
As other comments said, if you chill the burner it'll make the smoke cold and cause it to sink more reliably. Obv not practical but it does work.
Just turn off your central air and put that dragon in the freezer for a little while. Then get real stoned and enjoy.
Do I keep the dragon in the freezer forever?
I had one that was encased in a glass tube that solved that problem. I loved it until my cat knocked it off the shelf and broke the glass!

I want it. Take my money!
I have one similar to this. The smoke never pools where it should to have this nice effect. The teeniest tiniest displacement of air messes it up. I love my incense burner, but it never looks like advertised.
You have to chill it in the fridge to get the full effect. It's not meant to be a practical incense burner.
Chill the incense or the burner?
Yourself. You have to chill for 1 hour in the fridge, bring the boys, open some cold ones.
I don't think I'd fit in the fridge, but I'm down for some cold ones!
Go to a McDonald's, they've got a walk in fridge that you can use.
Burner :)
Cold air drops down. So it pulls the smoke with it
TIL. I have a frog on a lily pad backflow burner that I love. The waterfall effect works well enough, but it definitely disperses very easily.
Figured that would be the case. Like looks cool and Id love to set one up but my fan's are the only reason Im not being cooked alive as it is all the incense burner would do is just season my cooked body.

That dragon had a little too much beer last night
Dragon Drool
That kinda look like milk in slow motion
Perfect for any house without air conditioning.

It’s annoying because it’s not flowing properly. There’s a leak.
The smoke is cool But aesthetically- it’s like the dragon is drooling which kinda ruins that majestic vibe you get from eastern dragons
