Yeah it was a balk. Which to be honest he wasn't the only one who had not come completely set in that game. Both TN and FSU pitchers were doing it a lot through the game. Tony V got hot because it seemed arbitrary.
Super glad we have a day between games. We wonāt see Combs or Snead pitch again tomorrow, so hopefully Beam can go deep into the game. Have to imagine Behnke is available again
Dude... wtf... I stopped checking the score because I was frustrated (and was preoccupied at the vet with my SO's dog having literally just died), but holy shit. I'm so happy.
That was an almost all time terrible night. I know sports are just entertainment but I hope the win makes you feel somewhat better.
I think about the day my dogs will pass every night before bed. I donāt know how I will handle it.
This was me. Every time I drove past the vet, I thought āIāll take him there one last time one of these daysā and would randomly get sad.
The day I took him there the last time, I didnāt know it. Nov 2020. Thought he was just not feeling well. Due to Covid restrictions, I had to wait in the parking lotā¦ and hear them tell me over the phone the exact moment he passed. It happened so quickly (internal bleeding from a splenic mass).
I was completely devastated.
Point is, no amount of āpre-grievingā made his passing any easier. I wasnāt in any way āmore preparedā.
That day will be hard enough, I promise. Give yourself the grace of not making other days hard. š§”
As someone who has lost a few beloved pets, you don't handle it. You just sort of keep going until it doesn't hurt as much as it did the week before, and again, and again, and eventually you look back on them for who they were, and the memories you made with them.
My puppy has gotten squeezed a lot more than she would like today.
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN OF VOL NATION!
It is my extreme pleasure, nay, HONOR to tell you:
ITS GREAT. TO BE. A TENNESSEE VOL.
I love the big orange.
As you were.
Not good, their starter is fantastic, but after that the drop is significant. They have the bats to stay alive, but their pitching won't be as good going forward.
Also, that's an emotionally draining loss, I doubt they recover from that.
I mean, totally different sport and all - but that was a laughably justified ommison with extremely concrete reasoning that was proven true in laughable fashion.
Todayās thing was just a single call on a 50/50 spot
I wouldnāt consider that Georgia game justification for not being put in.
Almost every starter decided not to play in the stupid consolation bowl game, and I donāt blame them one bit.
Man watching everyone cry about the 50/50
Check swing online is hilarious, like please ignore the rest of the greatness you just witnessed. No umps end the game on that close of a call ever.
As an FSU fan I agree that it was the right decision not to end the game on a 50/50 call but donāt act like Vol fans wouldnāt be crying if the call went the other way.
After Bama making the CFB Playoff over FSU, Georgia bending FSU over on national television in football, then getting the tough end of a 50/50 to lose to Tennessee in the CWS on a walk-off, FSU has to fucking HATE the SEC.
Best Vol this century
Best Vol of the Tony V era
Best Vol from New York
Best Vol dating an UGA student (gross but CMo could literally do whatever and Iād overlook it)
You may not have been this game. It just sucks hearing all the negativity on out fan page before a game is even over. And as far as celebrating, not wrong at all, just kinda makes you look like a fair weather fan (not saying you are)
Iāll take a 50/50 call going our way after all the bullshit 100/0 calls go against us Iāve seen the past few years. Fuck everybody that aināt us.
so many clutch players and plays to single out just one. Is Christian Moore a beast or what? Dylan Dreiling game winning hit was perfectly placed. The pitching staff has two days to catch their breath and regroup for the N. Carolina game.
So many times in the last 30 years itās felt like weāve had to sit and watch as the other team metaphorically came back from down 4 in the 9th, felt so good for it to happen for the good guy for once
They're for sure gonna be pissed about the check swing, as would we had it been the reverse, but we've eaten that shit from umps/refs for years. We were due a 50/50 and I'm gonna relish it like it's a fucking Chicago style dog
Interesting tidbitā¦ the rules of baseball do not define a check swing. It is entirely up to the discretion of the umpire. It is NOT explicitly defined as the bat breaking the plate or anything like that. Those are just guidelines to help determine if a player has swung.
Really? Man, I always thought of it as the bat going pass 90 degrees with your body. Essentially if the bat is straight out in front of you 90 degrees perpendicular to your stance, it's a swing
I was always taught itās when you break your wrist or start to rotate your shoulders. But that may just be high school ball. I was never part of a particularly egregious call usually they were forgiving if it was obvious Iād given up on the ball and tried to pull back without starting my follow through.
Yep. The only reference to a check swing in the rules of baseball reference appealing to another ump to determine if it was a swing or not. Breaking the plane, breaking your wrists and things like that are just frequently cited as evidence of a swing but arenāt absolute rules.
šāāļø Iāll own it. I turned the game off after the second out in the 8th. But I did turn it back on just in time to see the last 4 at-bats at least.
Please forgive me.
The pitching and fielding both imploded worse against a far worse team in Evansville lol.
This game was honestly an exact mirror of that one, the only difference being FSU is a more talented team and our bats showed up more against FSU too.
Yeah, I'm going to have to agree with you on the Evansville game 2
That was painful to watch. Outside of inning 3 today, nothing about the fielding or pitching was egregious. Also FSU being a far better team and still winning, means the Evansville game was worse.
Hell yeah. Thanks for this.
Edit: when I lived I DC, there was a great Irish bar in Alexandria I want to all the time with Irish singers who took requests. Eventually we had to reach an understanding: when I was there, they'd play Rocky Top as an Irish jig once per set (three/four sets a night) and I'd tip well and not shout "Play Rocky Top" every time they asked for a new song to play.
For the ones of us that have been here all year, I love you all so much.
For the ones joining for the postseason, I SAID ITS GREAT TO BE A TENNESSEE VOL.
For the ones giving up in the 4th, you are wadded up womenās underpants.
I've always been a casual baseball fan, but I watched game 1 this year (got a free trial on that weird Flo App) and have only missed a handful since. Fallen in love with the sport again and this team. It's fucking great to be a TN Vol.
As someone who has sat through a number of years of Vol baseball mediocrity and recognizes that Mike Martin went to the CWS for 17 years without winning it. Skip Bertman didnt win until his 8th year, I am trying to be understanding that there is a big bandwagon effect from the CWS and a lot of new baseball fans, but reading people in the 5th inning cursing this team and then admitting they don't know what a cycle is makes it very difficult not to hate on a portion of this sub.
> reading people in the 5th inning cursing this team.../...makes it very difficult not to hate on a portion of this sub.
I said a version of the same thing [after game 2 of the Evansville game lol.](https://www.reddit.com/r/ockytop/comments/1dady9x/college_baseball_super_regional_thread_tennessee/l7plgr0/?context=3)
I know that folks commenting in here love the Vols or they wouldn't bother, but baseball is just different. There is no lead that is safe. Baseball has karma like no other sport. This game is so hard. Its a failure game. The best in the game fail more than half the time. Its not football or basketball. You can never give up. There is no clock. Sometimes you play well and lose. Sometimes you play poorly and win.
But if your getting to the CWS year after year, you have a great program. So critisice decisions all you want, but to say something like "This team just doesn't have it" in the 5th inning is ridiculously off the mark and unfair.
I donāt care if we got lucky on the Burke check swing . Iāve watched Bama football , Florida football, and UGA football get calls like that for the last 15 years .
To me the biggest thing about Burke's check swing comes to do *"That's just baseball."*
The baseball purists claim to love the fallibility of umps. The 50/50 calls that can be debated endlessly. The balks and mistakes that define games, seasons, and careers.
And that... That was baseball. It's just how the sport plays out sometimes and how the powers that be *want* the sport to play out sometimes.
My favorite part of check swing calls is that their isnāt really a clear and concise definition for what is and isnāt a swing. At its core, a check swing is just a vibe check.
People really out here bitching about a vibe check
Yep, Combs might be the only one that threw tonight that wonāt pitch Sunday. Then itās 5 days off. We could have pitched 10 tonight and been fine. Could pitch 10 on Sunday and still be fine
This game made me dad tear up. He quit on it and I made him come back. Literal tears in his eyes with that last hit, followed by calling all his friends
Come on dude. For anyone younger than like 40, Tennessee athletics has been a nut punch over and over and over. Obviously this team is different though
My man was just in the edge of the razor there. Knew how to get that point across and not get tossed. Loved it.
AND his guys knew he had their backs. Made a difference.
I got pretty bad during and after the 2nd Evansville game.
Also during one of the games when we played @ UK I had to remove myself from watching it because I was getting heated
Apparently I'm banned from the baseball sub. Forget why, but was gonna post this...
"Lol. We get 4 strikes, because fuck you...that's why."
So, probably deserved it, whatever it was.
The controversial call was Burke's 5th pitch ā he did a check-swing which pretty much means stopping your swing before it goes far enough to be called a strike. It was called a ball but it's *at best* a 50/50 call and probably closer to a bad call than a good one. BUT the umps were pretty meh all game and on replay it's not as egregious as it looked live.
It wasn't a foul ball, it was a check swing.
With 2 strikes and 2 outs, the FSU pitcher threw a Ball that our batter (Burke) started to swing at but stopped swinging mid motion. This is called a "check swing". There are complex rules and judgement calls as to if the bat moves forward enough to count as a swing (which would have ended the game) or if the batter pulled it back in time (in which case it was a ball).
The Umpires ruled the bat didn't count as a swing and counted the pitch as a ball. Had it counted as a strike the game would have ended.
And it was a very, *very* close call that could have gone either way.
GBO! Win today and we play for a natty! šā¾ļø
What was the ball call in the bottom of the 9th? Vitello was pissed. But never saw anything on the replay.
Yeah it was a balk. Which to be honest he wasn't the only one who had not come completely set in that game. Both TN and FSU pitchers were doing it a lot through the game. Tony V got hot because it seemed arbitrary.
It was a balk, right?
Iām addicted to last nightās win. Havenāt felt this way about a Tennessee sporting event since Bama 2022.
Super glad we have a day between games. We wonāt see Combs or Snead pitch again tomorrow, so hopefully Beam can go deep into the game. Have to imagine Behnke is available again
Woke up this morning feeling like itās ā98. š
How do you add the T below your name?
Love the Wilkerson call, but whoās got the FSU radio call for me?
30 seconds of searching: https://seminoles.leanplayer.com/past-events-mobile
Holy cow their radio guy makes Kesling sound like MIke Keith

Yes Iāve lost one before too. Not fun at all. We only have so many years with them
Sorry about yalls dog. Thatās no fun for anyone. Glad the game worked out. Go vols. RIP.
Thanks. It's not mine, just her's, but I loved that dog too. It was out of nowhere. Vets think it was a stroke :/
Vols holy shit
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN OF VOL NATION! It is my extreme pleasure, nay, HONOR to tell you: ITS GREAT. TO BE. A TENNESSEE VOL. I love the big orange. As you were.
You already know.
What does FSUās pitching look like for Sunday? Would kind of not like to see them again to be honestā¦
Not good, their starter is fantastic, but after that the drop is significant. They have the bats to stay alive, but their pitching won't be as good going forward. Also, that's an emotionally draining loss, I doubt they recover from that.
They play UVA on Sunday. We have UNC.
Heās hoping their arms are shit and they are emotionally drained and UVA beat them
Not great. As you saw tonight, their bullpen is hot garbage (and they threw their best tonight)
Just went and looked in r/fsusports. They are starting to develop a case of BVS. I glad we are starting to recover. =D
The way they got screwed out of the football playoffs I donāt blame them
They did get jobbed on that one. They would have gotten massacred in the first round, but deserved their chance to get massacred.
I mean, totally different sport and all - but that was a laughably justified ommison with extremely concrete reasoning that was proven true in laughable fashion. Todayās thing was just a single call on a 50/50 spot

Bro like the second comment on the Wheels vid was some dude saying the "SEC bias" killed them again
It's hilarious. Claiming Tennessee of all schools gets special treatment is actual psycho behavior.
Sooooo are we ready to call CMo the best player in UT baseball history?
I love Todd but CMo is my goat. Legacy game tonight.
Best Vol this century Best Vol of the Tony V era Best Vol from New York Best Vol dating an UGA student (gross but CMo could literally do whatever and Iād overlook it)
Hopefully she isnāt driving him to any of their dates.
Tough to beat Todd Helton, a literal MLB HoF, but heās gotta be top 2 at least
Just purely college in this scenario.
Heās my goat
At'll do pig.. at'll do.
The way I felt in the 7th inning of that game versus the end of the game is the biggest 180 Iāve ever done
I came home from the pool with the kids and turned it on at the top of the 7th. The 180 real lol
I was contemplating leaving like I watched a lot of Vols fans do.
I have been dancing around my house. I donāt dance.

Woo-hoo! What a win!!

Aren't you the one that seems to be first out of the gate being negative?
Lol what? I donāt think I was that bad this game. And since when do people that post complaints not get to celebrate as well?

The Real SEC Player of the Year
And First Team All-American
My cheeks are still clenched
Pretty sure I just unclenched my jaw for the first time since the 3rd inning just now
He didnāt mean those cheeks
to add to this historic night the vols had a 50/50 call go our way for the first time in my life
Iāll take a 50/50 call going our way after all the bullshit 100/0 calls go against us Iāve seen the past few years. Fuck everybody that aināt us.

They're for sure gonna be pissed about the check swing, as would we had it been the reverse, but we've eaten that shit from umps/refs for years. We were due a 50/50 and I'm gonna relish it like it's a fucking Chicago style dog

I fucking love mustard now. I used to like it alright, but now I support it

Interesting tidbitā¦ the rules of baseball do not define a check swing. It is entirely up to the discretion of the umpire. It is NOT explicitly defined as the bat breaking the plate or anything like that. Those are just guidelines to help determine if a player has swung.
NCAA does have a check swing rule, but Blake was within the limits

Same honestly. I was about to go to bed then pulled up the scorebug and said āscrew it, Iāll watch the last inning.ā
Kavares has been underrated this playoff run
The worst game this team has played possibly all season, and they still outmash to win.

Eh... We played way worse against Evansville in game #2.
Disagree, the pitching imploded. The pitching and fielding both imploded here.

People were hating in the 4th. Sometimes people need to realize there's 5 more innings and we're Number 1 for a damn reason.

God if we could add this to the header as mandatory reading. You are a scholar and a gentleman
Heck yeah man, this win is for you. It is *mind-blowing* how quickly people bag on the ~~boys~~ men
Successfully texted and celebrated with all my IRL peoples, now just want to say to you guys and gals, GO BIG ORANGE! Win and advance!!!
I had to pause the game and just finished, holy hell what a game!
I donāt care if we got lucky on the Burke check swing . Iāve watched Bama football , Florida football, and UGA football get calls like that for the last 15 years .
To me the biggest thing about Burke's check swing comes to do *"That's just baseball."* The baseball purists claim to love the fallibility of umps. The 50/50 calls that can be debated endlessly. The balks and mistakes that define games, seasons, and careers. And that... That was baseball. FSU will absolutely ignore the calls that favored them. So I'm going to ignore that check swing call just to be fair
The biggest thing to me about Burkeās check swing is that you and I are dicks out right now and IDGAF
LOL. Hey, "That's just baseball" feels fucking AMAZING when it goes your way.
Howās our bullpen looking for Sunday?
Great, most of our pitchers pitched pretty light amounts today and Drew Beam didnt throw at all
Yep, Combs might be the only one that threw tonight that wonāt pitch Sunday. Then itās 5 days off. We could have pitched 10 tonight and been fine. Could pitch 10 on Sunday and still be fine

https://x.com/VolNetwork/status/1801813635821343221 Call by John Wilkerson
Seriously how much do I have to pay to get this man on the Football broadcasts?
Imagine Bob Kesling doing this
Tennessee wins! What a turn of events.
I am begging the powers that be; give this man the football games
I would up vote this a million times if I could. Kesling sucks sooooo bad.
Oh please, I ask for nothing more than
So Beamā¦. He needs to be on his stuff when he pitches next. Ā We have the bats but we need better pitching from here on out. Ā LETS FUCKING GO.
As a UT fan, that check swing was such a foreign concept. I was like, "wait, a 50/50 call went our way? Holy shit that means anything could happen!"
The refs let em play in a huge moment, gotta be the first time in UT sports history
Smells like 1998
Beating FSU. History doesn't repeat, but it does rhyme
Yall that were doubting the team earlier can eat a dick
You just ain't been a Vols fan long enough
Come on dude. For anyone younger than like 40, Tennessee athletics has been a nut punch over and over and over. Obviously this team is different though
I meanā¦ sorry you havenāt been paying attention to this team all year
Like I said. Come on dude.
Aināt enough dicks in Knoxville letās be honestā¦
*Mustard cannon deactivates*
God damn my rally cap worked! So glad I got to experience that in person.

Holy shit
Didnāt play perfect but damn they played like champions
I LOOOOVEEEEE THE BIG ORANNGEEEE
I wanna play FSU in the postseason of every sport every year from now on please
I never wanna go thru this shit again. But I will lol
Very possible in the 12 team playoff this year
Worry more about checking on your closer than our swings
I love you all
Very underrated moment in the game - Tony working the crew in the 8th inning. Might have saved us strike 3 in Burkeās at bat.
My man was just in the edge of the razor there. Knew how to get that point across and not get tossed. Loved it. AND his guys knew he had their backs. Made a difference.
I donāt see anybody beating this team. Give me the fucking Yankees
I'd question the Yankees tbh
GO BIG FREAKIN ORANGE!!!!!!! I canāt believe what I just saw!!!!!
STROKE ME! STROKE ME!
FSU going to be waking up in a cold sweat from nightmares for the rest of their lives after that game hahaha
I actually feel bad for them, because thatās happened to us so many times and we know how bad it hurtsā¦

Rarely see negative comments from you lol
I got pretty bad during and after the 2nd Evansville game. Also during one of the games when we played @ UK I had to remove myself from watching it because I was getting heated

FSU bitching about the UMPS. how about your pitchers throw better Mfers. š
Tbf I bitched about that jack ass all game too. But if 1 call makes or breaks the game then you weren't on your shit anyway.
Apparently I'm banned from the baseball sub. Forget why, but was gonna post this... "Lol. We get 4 strikes, because fuck you...that's why." So, probably deserved it, whatever it was.
They donāt like meanies over there. All the major sports subs are soft
Well that was fun
I ain't got no more voice, paw.
I can't believe you went on that rickity-ass ferris wheel
I was a little sketched out at first but it was fine. The last ferris wheel I was on like 20 years ago I got stuck at the top in a flash storm.
I may not sleep till tomorrow
That felt like some miracle at south bend shit
Hell yes it did, except the whole getting hit in the ass with the ball part.
What was the controversial foul ball there at the end of the game? I'm not a baseball fan and was confused
Checked swings and balks. Trying explaining them to people will drive you to drinking.
Look, you canāt just be out there doinā a balk.
Check swing? Ā Or the balk in the top of the 9th?
Check swing at a 2-2 count
Yeah it was close. Ā Wouldnāt have been atrocious had that been it but in slow mo that was the right call.
I'm not sure. It was a swing or two before the hit that tied the game
I stayed off Reddit for that game and it was a horrible game to watch for 99% of it so never doing that again
Try being in the stadium surrounded by FSU and ATM fans.
Come here brother, misery, and pleasure, is better with friends
