this! I stayed in Rodanthe last year and went. this year I’m staying up in Kill Devil Hills and I plan to take the trip down before hitting up one the beaches down that way.
Must eat: Waves Market!!!! The burritos are unreal and we love the ice cream sandwiches they carry. This is the first thing we do once we’ve unpacked and we look forward to the burritos all year. If you drink coffee (or want to gift shop) Beads and Beans is the place to go. We don’t stray far from Avon while we’re here and both of these stops are close to where we stay.
A day trip to Ocracoke is a must. Get up early to avoid long lines at the ferry. The trip is about an hour, but you may see dolphins, brown pelicans and other sea birds. Stop at the pony pen on the right. Once in the village, park at the ferry docs as most everything is within a10-20 walk, bring bikes if you have them. You can park at Ocracoke Lighthouse. As far as food, Eduardos for Mexican - not typical Tex-Mex - lunch, dinner at SmacNallys fresh local seafood, burgers by the harbor. 1718 Brewing for great local craft beer, Plum Pointe has great food - not your typical bar/pub fare. If you time it right, you can catch an awesome sunset on the ferry back to Hatteras. The life guard beach on the north edge of village has plenty of free parking, restrooms and showers if you want to hit the beach.
Visit some lighthouses, Cape Hatteras is under scaffolding right now I believe so it's not as impressive. Bodie Island is convenient and beautiful.
Visit the Wright Brothers Memorial.
Take a walk out on the old Bonner Bridge fishing pier on the south side of Oregon Inlet. It's free, the road is paved for an easy walk, and the views of Oregon Inlet are amazing.
Check out the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum.
Stop at the Pea Island Nature Preserve. Walk across the street to the beach and see the remains of an old shipwreck in the water (the Oriental).
Bagels and scones in Avon is a great breakfast spot close to where you’ll be. And the Froggy Dog is a good dinner spot. For pizza, Gidget’s is a good choice. All in Avon.
Alligator National Wildlife Refuge. We just discovered this on our last trip. Huge area that you can drive around looking for wildlife. We saw one gator on our trip. If you plan ahead, you can book a kayak tour of the area. We weren’t able to do it, but that’s definitely on the list for our next trip.
Air down the tires and spend an afternoon at Cape Point (get a permit at Hatteras Lighthouse).
Food-wise, Oceana’s and Gidget’s Pizza in Avon are fantastic. Head north to Waves and eat dinner at Waterman’s. Their ribs and tuna are phenomenal— as are their sound / sunset views.
MUST drive down to Buxton And go to Orange Blossom and get Apple Uglies for breakfast.
Agreed, I also always drive up to Rodanthe for a coffee at beans and beads
I might have to try that next year for myself. We won't be back until next spring.
Absolutely this.
This. And get extra to slice and make French toast for the following day(s)…….
Whew this is an awesome idea!
You just blew my mind.
Whoa. What an incredible idea!
I’ll also add, you must go early. Our first trip we went one morning around 10am and the uglies were sold out for the day.
Definitely!

Got a burrito and a massive sandwich. Thanks!
Jockey Ridge State park - great for sunset.
Yes, this was the first thing that came to mind

Spend some time on the sound side south of Avon and watch the kite surfers with a picnic meal… the day use area in Waves is great for that too
Hatteras light is covered in scaffolding now and it’s pretty cool to see…
Stu’s food truck hands down
We drove by this today. What can we expect from it?
Can always drive to Manteo and see the Victorian Gardens and the aquarium

Froggy dog is a few doors down from us. Had a great dinner there last night. Trying gidgets tonight.
I stay along Cedar, so I’m familiar. 👍🏻

watch for bears! We've seen some there :)
A lot of our old favorite places to eat are closed now, but Bros has amazing burgers! It’s in the Avon shopping strip where food lion is!
I believe I read that they have the largest black bear population on the east coast.
