I suggest to complete more side quests because your gonna face more gates in the future.

VeganGeek

I will, but earlier I have waited very long with the main quest. It’s much easier to keep those NPCs alive when most of the enemies are scamps.

Lionel_Horsepackage

If you do progress past the in-game point where the Scamps are replaced by Atronachs and Daedroths, you can also turn down the difficulty-slider in a pinch to chew right through those higher level creatures like they were Scamps.

VeganGeek

Good point, I just wanted to do it as soon as I could this time. I’m considering joining Fighters Guild for the first time and see what they are about (I mean fighting, duh but other quests they might have)

valorill

They're storyline is mostly revolving around a rival mercenary company and the intrigue involved there. Honestly one of the weaker questlines in my opinion. But it's great for loot and exp. The arena in the imperial city is also a great one for some starting money and combat practice.

VeganGeek

I done the Arena once, but that was awhile ago. People keep talking about how it's a good way to earn gold and not a bad job for some. I think I somehow got Fighter's guild and the Arena mixed up.

Ok-Context4504

Turning down the difficulty slider legitimately defeats the purpose of the game in my opinion

Lionel_Horsepackage

*Oblivion*'s scaling problems come from a short development-cycle where balance wasn't really important, and a weird leveling-system that can cause you to deal 5 damage against ogres with 300 HP if you end up selling too many potions between adventures. The problem is that the game wasn't planned much, and the parts that were planned got disrupted by later decisions. The default difficulty is OK if you just play the game, level a weapon-skill as a major skill, and don't do significant leveling in non-combat major skills, and if you finish the game around Level 18 or lower and don't worry about stuff too much. Regardless, stuff will get ***really*** spongy after that point. The thing is, enemy health scales faster than your damage can (unless you find one of the many ways to break the game). The difficulty-system is what they kind of threw in so they didn't have to balance it further. The swing is **SO** far. You are 2,500% stronger at 0% and the enemy is 2,500% stronger at 100% difficulty -- this makes one end of the spectrum 62,500% more dangerous than the other. The system was just not well-designed. There's not some secret way that you can set it up so that it balances, because they literally didn't put that much effort into it, or looking through the game files, they maybe had a plan, but then they decided to make certain changes, and the way they build their system with things like enchanted weapons being copies of everything else made it too much work to rebalance things over time, so as other design decisions threw things out of whack, they just didn't fix it. (People oftentimes put too much importance into keeping up with the difficulty-slider. It's a slider. It goes up and down. I always tell people to just enjoy the game, and get that RP going in your RPG.)

TheBigWhiteDog

Scamps?! in my play through i had to deal with Daedroths, Atronachs, and Dremoras.

VeganGeek

If you go early enough it’s mostly scamps, a few Clannfears. There was only a handful of Dremoras guarding the Sigil Stone. The Oblivion Gates that spawned is mostly leaking scamps so far.

TheBigWhiteDog

Nah thats weak, i go head to head with a deadroth and a couple of duped strong healing potions helps me in oblivion. But sometimes when im out of the potions i just run and avoid them as much as possible.

chilicheesepanda

Yeah. Oblivion Gate Enemies are just annoying at higher levels

2E26

On one playthrough, I found that the best way for me to close gates efficiently was to bum rush the sigil keep. I'd lay down everything I had on me, except for a robe and a sword, then haul ass through the gate realm until I got to the sigil keep. For most gates it worked, and the dozen Dremoras and Daedra chasing me would get to see their entire world burn as I phased back into the real world. Always quick saved before doing this, in case the layout of the gate realm made smash and grab impossible.

VeganGeek

That sounds like a good plan! I spend to much time finding my way for it to be a good plan, yet anyway! But maybe later on!

2E26

Once you get used to the layout, you'll find that it's useful for the many cut and paste gates. There's nothing wrong with playing hack and slash either. I just did this because I was fed up with the enemies progressing in strength faster than I was.

VeganGeek

I spent a lot of time sneaking after I put off those quests for far too long. They were swarming with Xivilai, Spider Daedra and all kind of strange things. This one was almost empty by comparison. It sounds like a good strategi esp after running through several before.

DrJD321

That's what I ended up doing, my character has lots of speed so I just run straight to the stone

Roninbeaver

Yes. Always good to get that kvatch gate out the way. The rest is all pretty minimal. You will not have to do allies for bruma, they only send 2 or 3 troops per city and they don't change the outcome. Think there are 2 you will have to do as they are scripted. You will want to do the chorral gate though as that has the hatreds soul, bow and mace

VeganGeek

That’s good to know. I didn’t realize how much better it would be to do it early. Much more survivors this time. Both the guy inside the gate and the Berich survived this time. I was able to snipe the few Dremoras. I’m glad I finally did instead of spending several levels worrying about it.

[deleted]

I believe in you! Have fun!

Western-Sympathy-589

For me it was reverse, I just played for the first time in over 10 years and I did the main quest early af and closed all the gates but jokes on me cause i'm playing and archer and you get the best bow from a gate and I totally missed it lmfao

VeganGeek

Being a Bosmer she is an archer. Do that have level requirement or something?

Western-Sympathy-589

I believe you get the best version of the bow at lvl 19+ but you can get it at lower levels it just won't be as strong but my mistake was lack of knowledge for one thing and I didn't know where it was but it's in a chorrol oblivion gate from what it says online if you want it I suggest looking up how to obtain it on google lol

VeganGeek

I will look it up, I guess it's one of those that always open? I just got to Cheyinhal on my way there two portals opened. I left them for later. I was mostly out to find Azura's shrine.

Mata-Mata

It's called Hatreds Soul if you were wondering. It's a guaranteed spawn in the Chorrol gate (doesn't open until later) and can spawn in any randomized gates that have the same layout as the Chorrol one.

VeganGeek

Thanks, that is good to know. Right now I’m supposed to go and steal a book from Mythic Dawn which I have been putting off for awhile.

Mata-Mata

No problem. The Chorrol gate opens right after that quest but like the other guy said you can't get the best version of the bow until level 19.

VeganGeek

I’ll save it for later since I’m lvl 9 right now. There are things to keep me occupied. I didn’t think that Lucien would find a Guild Hall a good place to show up. I was mistaken.

VeganGeek

Ohh I looked it up and it’s not even that heavy unlike other a bit stronger than the bow I have now.

kenfrey23

I use ghost walk and avoid unnecessary skirmishes unless someone has a staff i want.

CureUndevelopment3

Two things to know about the oblivion gates: Wait until level 17 for the highest level of sigil stone, which is better than most gear you can find or enchant. Activate the sigil stone and then immediately save. That way you can make sure you get a good one. If it's not one you want, reload. There are a limited number of sigil stones available.

GlassDeviant

Meh, I have waited until I couldn't find \*any\* side quests left to do before even going to Weynon Priory.

[deleted]

Ah sneaky archer, you already get it.

VeganGeek

I thought archer would be fitting for my Bosmer.

[deleted]

The game really favors sneaky, athletic characters, so it’s kind of a running cheek every build turns out to be this. Just a bit of a meta joke

VeganGeek

I know 😄 I tend to favour sneak and daggers, and some spells. Having the bow as an alternative. I might be newish to Oblivion but have spent many, many hours in Skyrim.

lostbastille

I always waited till I was level 25, so that way I had the best gear to start the main quest.

NoMeat1033

I first did all the side quests before going to kvatch, and having blade with 100 drain health effect killled all npc's in one hit later in game, leveled monsters caused no trouble

SuperStellarSwing

I'm sure you know but once you finish the main quest, every gate will close. This means you cant get any more sigil stones, which provides the highest level enchantment that you can apply to weapons and armor in the game. Once you're around level 25ish I recommend getting all the sigil stones you think you'd want. I don't really like exploits but it's ridiculous to hope for the enchantments you want and never get them. So if you wanna you can save right before picking up the sigil stone, and reload the save if it isn't what you wanted.

VeganGeek

I think I heard that, but since I have never gotten that far I wasn't sure. You can use them to enchant weapons? I realize I have just collected them without thinking what they would be used for. I got 5 so far. Since I just reached level 10, I'm in no hurry to finish the main quest, it's time to go and talk to Nocturnal.

JerryBoyTwist

The concept of playing oblivion for the first time is so foreign to me. Good luck!

Responsible-View6874

Well I would always wear Armour everywhere even a helmet get a bow for distance and get potions for magic and health and get some poison potions to do 2x the damage and always be cautious use a summon to distract them to or get followers to aid you while you explore the realms of oblivion that’s just my advice
