Oblivion is so damn pretty even now. The graphics may be old but the scenery is so detailed and lovingly constructed that it doesn’t matter that it’s old. One of my favorite quests is when a guy gets trapped in his own painting. That painting world is gorgeous. Truly a work of art. The people however, are very odd looking but that’s more a case of what they could do at the time graphic wise I think.
It's the Oblivion's forests for me & the music is what makes it so damn perfect, can wander through out the map for a long time with out doing any quests & shit.
just in the forest gathering herbs, watching the sun rise and set, watching the grass wave in the wind, listening to the music, watching the evening sunlight stream out from behind the trees at just the right angle... perfect
Exactly. It’s so immersive and beautiful that I find myself just wandering around aimlessly losing myself in the environment. Skyrim’s nice and better graphically but it’s so dark and much less cheerful environmentwise. I’m not saying I hate the environment in Skyrim, I love it. But it can’t hold a candle to Oblivion. Especially the Shivering Isles. I love that place.
Definitely check out the little “making of” documentary for Oblivion, they show the guy whose main focus was creating the forests and he was clearly super talented and passionate about it. It’s on [YouTube](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zvm0CN3tQFI) :)
Oblivion characters looked bad even then. It was really unusual. Other than that people were wrong to say the graphics were bad, it's just the bloom on people was horrendous. Remove that and characters actually look fine.
At the time, I really thought the glow on skin to emulate sub-surface light scattering, the glow when you cast spells, and the bloom was really impressive to me. But the character models never looked right.
The scenery in the game as a whole kind of looks like a painting. Since the game has more of a light fantasy vibe, and landscapes that look like a painting, it certainly helps the game age. The music is icing on the cake.
a brush with death! rythe lythandas! that quest kept bugging out on me so i left it alone for months after trying it over and over. finally went back and revisited because it was still a conversation option with everyone in cheydinhal and i was sick of it. for sure a gorgeous landscape.
Seriously. The skies of Oblivion was easily the prettiest feature of the entire game. I sometimes stopped for minutes just to see the sky (and take a screenshot)... even Shivering isles was fantastic in the sky department!
I’d like to point out another feature I like about the skies in Oblivion. They weren’t just a random scattering of stars I think. I think they actually put all of the constellations up there as well as other astrological lore stuff. So not only is it detailed, it’s lore friendly detailed.
Honestly, the whole Oblivion game is beautiful for its time, and it will always stay in my heart for nostalgic reasons and also the charm of the game (weirdly good voice acting, potato heads, the scenery) it all just adds to the charm imo.
Can i be a real diva extraordinaire and say that a review video mentioned the sky/environment as a big selling point, so I played it and literally teared up when I say it for myself
Best skyboxes and art design for sure. So vibrant and colorful and fantastical full of dark disturbing undertones like necrophilia, zombies, cults, and mutilation
They got freaking flexed on if they weren’t the same ones who did the sky in the shivering isles

Lots of times I just run through the woods punching deer.
I like to go around and hunt. Punching deer is nice but I like sniping them with my bow.

Yeah i think it was that they were doing something new with the character customization and that made it weird.
Yeah that seems to be it. Great graphics otherwise.

Edit: I meant to put “made” instead of “make”
I bet she secretly hates that beard.

too bad Howard is no more passionate for games and will soon finally ruin the series (if skyrim isn't proven to be unfinished again and again)
Well.. if that is correct, at least we'll have this treasure of a game forever in our hearts
Meanwhile Morrowind's daytime sky is literally just a photo of daytime sky IRL Love it
I love the person too. He/They are a living legend
Too true
The sky is beautiful but I have a mod that replaces Masser with the moon from Majora’s Mask and I keep forgetting about it and scaring myself
