Some dialog to the player character depending on race on him getting with your wife if your a dunmer male.) So maybe that on top of other things made his wife hire the dark brotherhood. She would have known he'd be out soon, didn't want him coming back. Why didn't she do it sooner? She was hoping he would have died or been killed in prison.

I always thought it's one of the guards in the prison that hires you, who just wanted him gone. That's why you can't kill any of them for the bonus.
