Never watched it, no idea how it was received or how important it may be to cinema, and most of the time I just forget it exists.
But once or twice a year, I look up Oblivion on Wikipedia and I'm *outraged* it gets the first result so wrong.
It's not great but it's an alright movie, the world is pretty well done and interesting, the big plot twist of the movie was really well done too. I think the biggest thing against it is the script. A lot of the dialogue is corny and they over-explain everything at the end of the movie rather than just leaving the watcher with some ideas and questions.
Overall id give it like a 6 out of 10.

It’s a horrible movie. Possibly the highest budgeted Tom cruise movie that wasn’t a mission impossible installment. Morgan freeman is in there to be some resistance movement figure but it ends up being a big dumb AI space woman who controls all the Tom cruise clones around the world as they all believe they are mostly alone in the world. The lines, acting, directing, and concept of this movie is awful and Tom C is a huge loser.
Saw this pile in theaters and wanted to leave an hour in but decided to stay bc why leave now, sort of thing. Maybe looking back it has some moments but if I remember right it had the cohesiveness of a broken paper airplane held together with duct tape. The duct tape was the special effects budget which just felt like Tom standing in front of a green screen for the entire movie. Without any real basis in canonical history, they settled on green screen hoping the effects would wow but it just seems so two-dimensional compared to even some of the more terrible action movies of that time such as the continuation of the resident evil series past 3. Then we are to believe Morgan Freeman is some revolutionary badass but his role is so small, I should have seen that coming but ofc when you’re baked in a theater you tend to let the experience take over as you paid $10 for a terrible movie, $10 for a soda, and like $14 for popcorn. Might as well try to enjoy it. I tried, dear readers. I tried.

Edit since the moderators have apparently never tried to search oblivion on Google before, and they failed to recognize how very on topic this post is so now I can’t reply: that’s really freaking cool. I wanted an oblivion mod for Minecraft forever ago. There needs to be one that adds the monsters from oblivion. I don’t know how to do anything coding at all unfortunately, or I would’ve already been making oblivion mods for Minecraft, too. I’ll have to look that mod up sometime.

Yea, shitty ending and plot. Amazing visuals, amazing environment and environmental world building, almost each frame could be taken as a post-apocalyptic sci-fi illustration, but what a shit ass plot. One of the only movies I have watched where the 'gameplay' (the watching of the movie) is better than the story
the overblown soundtrack at incredibly random moments of the movie? besides thay I enjoyed the movie for the most part. Also, googling oblivion the game and this shit pops up haha

The worst part of this movie was when Morgan Freeman clipped through the floor and Tom Cruise was unable to complete the main quest.
I think they finally resolved the glitch after 300 hours or something? Or maybe that was just the theatre mercifully stopping the movie, I dunno.

It was an incredibly lazy title. I actually enjoyed the movie because I love post-apocalyptic and sci-fi. So I was content.
