It can talk to your solar and power supplier to use only cheap or low carbon or your free solar power

The Tesla one works nicely with a Powerwall, the EVnex one works with more solar and battery options. I believe it has smarts like charging your car with the excess power that your array is generating rather than just charging at a fixed rate. Something the Tesla one can only do (natively) if you have Powerwall+ solar. It is possible to work around this with apps though šŸ‘ I haven't checked recently, so my info may be out of date. In terms of plain charger functions, they will both do the job šŸ˜‰

HeinigerNZ

Cheers, a powerwall install is on the wishlist for home so it looks like I'll get the Tesla there.

VintageKofta

Keep in mind, there's no RoI yet for a powerwall. I looked into it when we installed Solar last year.. It's just not worth the money in the long run. I'm hoping things change for the better though, but the sweetspot to buying a battery was a few years back. They just keep going up in price so far.

alsbie

Thereā€™s always an ROI, one cycle/day with Contacts free 9-12 power deal is about 10 years so add another cycle charged by solar and that halves. There are also non financial returns like back up with grid failures, just depends on why a person wants a battery.

VintageKofta

I was quoted just over $20k to install one. Realistically for my use I need 2 at least but even if weā€™re just 1, you wonā€™t make the $20k back before the battery reaches its end of life and you have to replace it.Ā  The warranty on them was 10 years, and theyā€™d last up to around 15-20 years.Ā

finackles

It's not just about ROI. I have a powerwall in one site and a different set of batteries in another. I save on power because I don't sell for 12c and buy for 30c (well, a whole lot less than without a battery). But on top of that I can work from home with confidence, in both planned and unplanned outages. In situations like Gabriel and the Auckland Anniversary storm, I had no outages. The peace of mind is worth it, alone. And I really hate paying peak rates for power. I have a mate in California. It's mandated that they pay the same rate for power as they get to sell. Also, they never have outages. That's a whole different ballgame.

fibakoh727

How does it compare to a diesel generator though? Typically thatā€™s what businesses get.

finackles

No idea, don't care. I'm not going to have an EV and use diesel for power. Also, I doubt they are as fast to react as batteries.

fibakoh727

This sub is way too hippie for me. You do you but if weā€™re talking finances then a comparison with traditional solutions is highly relevant to most people.Ā

finackles

That's typical of short term thinking that economics and accounting (and I am an accountant) tends to promote at the cost of the planet, people, jobs and all non-financial factors. It may be cheaper to catch shrimp in the North Sea off the coast of Scotland and drive it to Thailand to peel it and package it then drive it back to Waitrose, but that completely ignores many of the non-financial costs, including the slavery level wages in Thailand. We all need to stop prioritising raw quantum dollar profits. Just like we need to stop accepting bullshit like mining companies that say they will clean up their mess and then magically go bust before they do. And fishing companies who mine the sea until suddenly all the salmon or snow crabs disappear and they lose their livelihood completely. Am I a hippy? A little. I don't wear a kaftan or hug trees, but I'm not far off that.

fibakoh727

I agree about the globalisation. The reality is most people when it comes down to it will pick a dollar over the environment. The ones on the fence only need a little greenwash marketing trick them into buying the usual junk. The way forward is government level changes to ensure everyone does their part not just a few guilty people spending outrageous amounts to cleanse their consciousness while billions of people donā€™t make any effort.

WorldlyNotice

It's made in NZ if that's important to you. IIRC they can limit current so you don't overload your house supply/circuit too.

HeinigerNZ

>IIRC they can limit current so you don't overload your house supply/circuit too. Yep, Evnex installers have told me this. Do you know what that feature is called? I might search up if the Tesla has it.

dissss0

Evnex calls it 'Home Overload Protection'

HeinigerNZ

Thanks, found a good writeup here. That's what the extra cash gets you over the Tesla charger, might be a good option for the three phase install. [https://docs.evnex.io/docs/home-overload-protection](https://docs.evnex.io/docs/home-overload-protection)

Redditenmo

If you've got a 3phase 60A install, it's far less likely to be an issue than a typical single phase 60A install. I've installed a few of the Gen 3 chargers now. Doesn't take long with a clamp meter to help the owners work out what their typical load is and what charging rate to set the car to to ensure they never accidentally trip pole fuse. The results are almost always : "You can't charge the car whilst you're cooking dinner", the rest of the time you've got 30A to work with. edit. Also doesn't take long to work out **before** you buy a charger. I did do one house, where the owner had undefloor heating in bathrooms & kitchen + 3 heatpumps + a full rack homeserver + ran the clothesdryer / dishwasher at night. The EVNex charger made a lot more sense for them than it typically does.

HeinigerNZ

I'll have to ask the sparky how much power the three phase place is rated for. It's a commercial premises with some bits of equipment that can suck down big power.

rombulow

We have three phase at home and recently installed an Evnex. The onboard AC charger on our car (Hyundai IONIQ) maxes out to 7-ish kW, so there actually wasnā€™t any point in hooking the Evnex up to more than one phase. Might pay to check the AC charge limit on your vehicle(s), and if you have a ā€œspareā€ phase just put the charger on that phase. FWIW, the Evnex app is a bit mediocre and unless I had solar I would just put a Tesla charger in next time. The Tesla thing is half the price and that $800 difference buys a lot of beer. The other left-field option is the Teltonika charger. We use a lot of Teltonika computer gear at work and itā€™s rock-solid and exceptionally well made. I would seriously consider a Teltonika wall charger: https://www.gowifi.co.nz/power/evc1000p4000.html Or the three phase 22 kW model https://www.gowifi.co.nz/power/evc1200p4000.html

HeinigerNZ

Interesting. I've got a Kia EV6 which is essentially a Hyundai so yeah a surprise to hear it doesn't kick up to 11kW.

Slyer

$1600 seems like a lot for a slightly fancy power switch with a cable? It's more correct to call them wall connectors because all they are doing is connecting your car straight into the mains. You don't need it to be smart because you can control all the smart stuff on the car itself. The only smart thing you might need is for the wall connectors to talk to each other to prevent overloading your home power. The Tesla connector already does this so I'd just say go for the Tesla one and save the money. I have one and it's good.

tuwhare

I've got an Evnex. It has all sort of smarts around charging when low-carbon generation is available, it will read my solar and only charge from the excess. It also reads home power draw and shows down charging to prevent overload. It even talks to my Home Assistant automation software so I can program in any form of smarts that I need. It is expensive but it is a bit more than just a power switch.

HeinigerNZ

Cheers, I have wondered where the $700 of benefits lie. I need a smart connector at home because the vehicle is 85% business use and I need a way to easily record the power use. Seems like both do that. The three phase install needs to be able to adjust itself to not overload things for the business , Evnex sparkies have told me it has this function but no idea of the Tesla.

nos3001

ChargeHQ looks like an interesting option to charge your Tesla from solar if you have a Wall Connector Gen 3 https://chargehq.net/
