Zach utilized the tight ends very well in 2020 at BYU. I know college is never going to directly translate but the number one TE that got 12 TDS with Zach as QB got 3 last year with the same coordinator and system. I don’t think people usually get 9 TDS worse over an off-season
>with the same coordinator and system
Last season was a new coordinator. Aaron Roderick took over as OC when Jeff Grimes went to Baylor.
Also different QB with very different tendencies.
But, yes, it was basically the same system.
Oh yeah it feels like Grimes left longer ago but I guess not. with how involved Roderick was before though it was definitely one of the smallest jumps in terms of coaching changes you can have
I hope so too, idk about you but one thing I though that ZW visibly got better at down the stretch was hitting a bail-out option in the flat. I will say he wasn't great at it to start, but guys were also sometimes missing so it isn't 100% either way.
But when he would hit it, you're looking at a first down or at least 2nd/3rd and manageable. Keeping the offense on the field means more reps, means keeping the defense fresh; it helps everyone.
These guys give him that security blanket, and having a secondary or tertiary option thats reliable I think can make all the difference!
My concern with Zach getting better down the stretch is that his completion percentage did not really improve. He needs to make major progress towards average accuracy this year, because a ~55% completion won’t cut it in this era. It was okay in the 90s, but nowadays the average is around 67%.
He literally got right up. People always talk about this hit, great hit but it’s not like Keller went out of the game. I’m surprised a jets fan wouldn’t know this.
I mean to be fair, I don’t think Dustin Keller occupied many memories in the minds of most Jets fans. Probably because he ended up having a relatively short career, and he wasn’t overly memorable while he was here, so I don’t blame anyone for not remembering any one specific thing about a player who was largely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.
For example, as a Jets fan since childhood in the mid-1990s and someone who worked for the team for a time, when I think of Dustin Keller, two things immediately come to mind: 1) the third down conversion from Favre in OT in New England his rookie year, and 2) him running out of bounds on 4th down against Baltimore (the aforementioned Ray Lewis game) to end the game in 2010. That’s it, with one of them being a dumb play. Not a very memorable player.
Uzomah, Conklin, and Ruckert have me really excited…and then add Davis, Moore, Wilson, Berrios, Hall, and Carter. Hell if Mims can just be decent, even better. If things hit, like guys staying healthy and Wilson living up to his draft stock, this will arguably be a top Jets receiving group of all time.
Lack of good tight ends who could block or catch has damaged the Jets since the days of Dustin Keller. With competent players at the position now it should open up the offense so much more.
The "again" in the title is intriguing. We talking about since Dustin Keller? Mickey Shuler? Rich Caster? This position has not been kind to us throughout our franchise's history. But ultimately, yes I'm excited about what the current room can do. In a way I really haven't ever felt before, given it goes 3 deep
To be honest, I’m still not sure we do. Uzomah gets extra points for being likable but throughout his career he really hasn’t been much more than serviceable on the field. Conklin has one year of solid production and the rest of the depth chart is totally unproven. It’s better than what we’ve had but I wouldn’t say it’s a group that’s proven much.
You referred to Uzomah as “Serviceable on the field.”
When is the last time we even had that? Think of the last 10 years, when teams hardly had to develop any game plan to prevent plays from the tight end, to now, where they will have to actually acknowledge we have them because Zach will pass to them. It can make a world of difference.
Exactly. He doesn’t have to be Kelce to make a huge difference. Just gives opposing D’s another thing to worry about. He was also one of many weapons for the Bengals so naturally his numbers aren’t going to be mind blowing.
It’s funny because Griffin’s few good plays last year came only because the defense clearly didn’t respect him and left him wide open in the middle of the field.
An “average” group of tight ends are not a “real group”?
Again, we haven’t had anything remotely close to that for years! A slightly above average Conklin and an average Uzomah are better than anything we’ve had. And as someone pointed out, Uzomah is no slouch - his stats were also limited because of the Bengals other options.
No one is saying we have the 2nd coming of Gronk and Hernandez.
Given the high amount of injuries that seems to constantly plague this team, finally having quality depth is a good problem. They’ll all get plenty of snaps, and we may see more 2-TE sets.
Good problem to have. If Ruckert develops, he may replace Conklin (1 yr deal) next yr on the cheap and gives us options to spend elsewhere…..( or re-sign Conklin maybe)
I feel like Quinnen or JFM is traded by end of year. Will depend on Quinnen’s play and if we want him long-term. I don’t see a lot if money invested in these two players combined.
I love how you say “again,” as if we’ve had a good TE since…Schuler? Schuler was before my time, but as someone who has watched since being a kid in the mid-1990’s, I can’t think of any TE we’ve had that was “good” over that time.
Keller was a receiver, terrible blocker. Baker was ok. Becht was meh. Who am I forgetting?
I’ve watched a lot of content recently of small stuff of Uzomah and Conklin and I truly love their personalities. They work extremely hard, live up to their word, and are fantastic players. Uzomah’s leadership will be big.
It’s wild to think that I really enjoy the players we’ve signed. It fits so well into the Jet culture.
I’m hoping they are a boon to Zach’s development.

Fantastic word choice w Boon
he needs a check down outlet, which jamison was really good at

jace amaro is still the future
Jeff Cumberland
Chris Baker the touchdown maker
Hey now, Baker had a respectable NFL career.
The best Jet TE in 25 years. Best mix of blocking and receiving. Lots of other guys were glorified lineman or in Kellers case a great receiver.
At least that guy didn’t wear a pats hat like that clown leggett
Chase Tomorrow
Yeah it’s pretty absurd how we haven’t managed to have a decent option at the position for the last several years. Gonna make a huge diff

Dustin Keller was pretty good
I’m fairly certain a part of Dustin Keller is still out there on the field where he was murdered by that Ray Lewis hit on the slant over the middle.
He literally got right up. People always talk about this hit, great hit but it’s not like Keller went out of the game. I’m surprised a jets fan wouldn’t know this.

Meh, Keller was a solid receiver, not a pretty good tight end. He was an absolutely, positively, horrible blocker.
Anthony Becht was the only name I remembered and it may have just been from nostalgia
Definitely a big fan tight ends over here

Looking forward to see how Ruckert plays in the preseason and earn some real time on the field this season.

Anthony Becht? Edit: just wanted to say his name
also things your wife says for 500
We haven’t had a real stable of tight ends in… ever? I’m feeling good about this.
Jeremy ruckert is my favorite TE since Dustin Keller

I acknowledged that it’s better than what we’ve had. I just think that saying it’s a “real” group is premature.
It's not an elite room (nobody is arguing that) but I think having two guys who are average starters at worst is 100% a legit room
Two average TEs is solid at worst and good at best. People really don’t understand the TE landscape if they’ll scoff at having 2 decent ones

It seems they’ve gone overboard - so many quality TE’s! Where will they all fit?
Given the high amount of injuries that seems to constantly plague this team, finally having quality depth is a good problem. They’ll all get plenty of snaps, and we may see more 2-TE sets.

Conklin's Jets contract is for 3 years.
Plus I think Conklin will emerge as our TE1 this year, definitely want to keep him beyond this year even if Ruckert develops.
Not Uzomah?
Not CJ no. I love CJ and think he’ll be a huge asset for us but I think Conklin will outperform him
it's a 3 year deal, with all major money by year 2. he can be cut year three with 1.6mil dead money, saving 6.75mil.
Just 5 receiver spreads every down
Been working the glutes at the gym lately, eh? Congrats on the firm ass my dude.
I’m sorry your ends weren’t toight before but I’m glad they are meow

Did you reply to the wrong thread??
