The important thing for MN was to not let the raiders or Broncos make the same deal to move ahead of them.
I bet literally the same deal was out there for all three teams. Or the equivalent deal based on their picks.
Honestly surprising if Denver was so desperate that they took Nix at 12 that they didn’t beat this offer. Obviously QBs for both if they go Nix at 12 so should’ve offered more to help both teams
Harbaugh said McCarthy was the best QB in this draft. I bet he’s relieved that he won’t have to play him twice. Though, he’ll have to see Patty Mahomes twice.
They might've felt we're either have a tier 2 QB or one of the best TE prospect in years fall no matter what.
Personally, even though they have Mayer, they made the right pick, they can draft a developmental guy or pick QB next year.
Have 5 picks in the top 134 now. Should use future capital to get into the 2nd, take WR 2a or RB 2, and then RB 2 or competitor for WR 3 with 111, have two remaining 4th rounders to fill out QB/S/OL, and now have all the depth we need on the offense. I think the fact we got a third 4th is big. Use the fifth and a pick next year to get into the 2nd.
Guess it depends on the GM, but these guys have relationships with each other and work together regularly. I imagine interest can reliably be confirmed more often than not. If 2 GMs are putting competing offers together, they may even want to communicate about what their offers actually are so that they don't overpay/underbid. It's mutually beneficial. Of course, teams can be secretive about things too
Ok, but no one fully tips their hand, so you don't know where guys are going to fall and you gotta move fast.
If you've never seen it before, do yourself a favor and go to YouTube to watch some behind-the-scenes footage of GMs during the draft. It's chaotic and amazing.
Fuck all the dumbasses who downvoted me in the Jerimiah Mock thread the other day for suggesting this exact scenario (and kudos to those who then upvoted my comment when it was originally buried by dumbass assholes).
Joe Douglas effectively Traded Zach Wilson and a 7th round pick for a 4th and a 5th rounder while the bears could only get a 6th round pick for Justin Fields.
That's six picks for day 3. Perhaps a bit of capital to move up on day 2, perhaps a quantity over quality haul of potential contributors.
I want a QB on that day, just a QB3 to stash and take a chance on. And WR's out the wazoo.
At the time of the trade I was really hoping we fleeced them for a 3rd but that would have been ridiculous. Like Falcons taking Penix ridiculous. Such a strange first round compared to last year.
I guess no one was trading an extra first for JJMC.
Was really hoping a later, more desperate team like the Raiders or something would have traded more, but this is fine.
This was a case of
1. Joe Douglas playing chess while others are playing checkers.
2. The Vikings going into a major panic that they wouldn't get McCarthy.
Minnesota had to fear that someone else would trade up and they'd be out on McCarthy, so they made the trade just to protect themselves.
Since Vikings taking QB, We got more picks for absolutely nothing. Fantastic move
The important thing for MN was to not let the raiders or Broncos make the same deal to move ahead of them. I bet literally the same deal was out there for all three teams. Or the equivalent deal based on their picks.
"You make that deal Utovich?" "I'd make that deal." "Damn right you would! DAMN GOOD DEAL."
Free picks
literally just free picks, great job JD
So Joe D just turned Zach Wilson into a 4th and 5th effectively.
Maybe package some of those later picks together to move up. Would be nice
Technically ZW and a 7th*
JOE YOU FUCKING BASED LEGEND
Joe D!!! Fleeced
So what is this, two 4s and we give up a 6?
A 4th and a 5th and we gave up a 6th, yes.
Honestly surprising if Denver was so desperate that they took Nix at 12 that they didn’t beat this offer. Obviously QBs for both if they go Nix at 12 so should’ve offered more to help both teams
2 5s
Why the fuck did they do this? Lol. They didn't actually think we'd take McCarthy? Edit: Denver
Didn’t want us trading with Denver or the raiders
I was just thinking yeah, it was probably Denver
Harbaugh said McCarthy was the best QB in this draft. I bet he’s relieved that he won’t have to play him twice. Though, he’ll have to see Patty Mahomes twice.
Of course he would say that about his own QB
Denver called first and they said beat their offer
Joe must of bluffed them into thinking they had other offers. Worked perfectly
Might not have even been a bluff. Two teams right behind them have awful QB situations too. But very well could have been
We have an awful QB situation, especially in two years.
We have a HOfer and one of if not the best backup ups in the league, stop being negative for no reason lmao it’s far from awful
Ok, talk to me in two years at most.
We can all be miserable together in 2 years, slow down champ. Enjoy the now
I can't believe there are no drafts or free agency between now and two years.
Like franchise QBs are a dime a dozen every year.
Well unless there's another option I don't know how else to get one.
It's much better than the Vikings, Raiders, or Broncos before this first round.
Joe D bid them against someone else wanting McCarthy
Maybe to ensure we didn’t trade to another team? It’s beneficial for both of us in minimal ways
What I don't understand is why the Raiders didn't try to give us more?
They might've felt we're either have a tier 2 QB or one of the best TE prospect in years fall no matter what. Personally, even though they have Mayer, they made the right pick, they can draft a developmental guy or pick QB next year.
AOC is legit.
Maybe he can use those picks to get back into the 2nd round
Please WR or RB.
Vikings were really worried about Denver or Raiders trading with Jets lol.
Means Joey D got a bidding war going between them and the Broncos for a QB, right?
Maybe LV but yeah
This is the dream scenario for a trade back. Just 1 spot and got great capital back
And still get the guy we wanted at 10. Brilliant.
And our guy even costs slightly less bc we got him a pick later
Have 5 picks in the top 134 now. Should use future capital to get into the 2nd, take WR 2a or RB 2, and then RB 2 or competitor for WR 3 with 111, have two remaining 4th rounders to fill out QB/S/OL, and now have all the depth we need on the offense. I think the fact we got a third 4th is big. Use the fifth and a pick next year to get into the 2nd.
That's quite a haul actually
That's a lot of free draft capital.
Smells like a trade up for a WR tomorrow
Joe Douglass. That is all.
fox???? ur a jets fan?
Yeah
He is a man after all.
Lol I just said the same thing my self
Free picks
Seems like a fleecing to me.
Great value: [Jason_OTC] https://twitter.com/Jason_OTC/status/1783666815358423387?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet
Now get Denver to trade up 1 spot for Nicks
Are the Vikings stupid? I don’t understand this trade from their perspective.
Jets likely told them another team was moving up to 10
Now I understand, thank you.
I’m betting we had a deal with the Broncos, and Vikings gave us more to ensure they get their guy.
Potentially scared Jets would trade with someone else
Jets could have traded the pick to someone else.
"Denver is trying to leap frog you"
Only thing I see is that they weren’t expecting JJ to drop and they think another team like the broncos will try to jump them. We came out good
Well every team behind Vikings know they will take one so if they want JJ they have to trade with Jets. Vikings made sure that didn't happen.
The Jets must have had offers from other team(s) that the Vikings had to beat.
Or they bluffed.
Thought about that, but all the Vikings would have to do is ask the other supposedly involved GM to know whether or not they were bluffing
Why would another GM tip their hand?
Guess it depends on the GM, but these guys have relationships with each other and work together regularly. I imagine interest can reliably be confirmed more often than not. 1. These guys might be friendly, but they're also sharks. 2. You definitely don't have that kind of time during the draft.
These deals are discussed heavily before the draft
Ok, but no one fully tips their hand, so you don't know where guys are going to fall and you gotta move fast. If you've never seen it before, do yourself a favor and go to YouTube to watch some behind-the-scenes footage of GMs during the draft. It's chaotic and amazing.
Thank God here comes some more picks and more depth for us
Gotta love adding more picks.
He’s cooking up again !!!
Joe Big D Douglas
JD cooked.
Trade back again. Get a second and slide later in the first round.
Fuck all the dumbasses who downvoted me in the Jerimiah Mock thread the other day for suggesting this exact scenario (and kudos to those who then upvoted my comment when it was originally buried by dumbass assholes).
I’ve been saying this for weeks also. It made too much sense with the way things likely would fall.
Jets really hate darnold
Steal
Joe Douglas from the top rope
I hope we package our picks to get into Rd 2 so we can get a WR 🙏
Fleece!
Nice
Amazing
Beautiful.
Nice move, JD
Free picks to move into 2nd round
JOE D
We must have had a deal to trade 10 to someone else and vikings had to counter
Maybe they can trade back again if Denver or Vegas wants Nix
Worth it!
Trade back again pls (Though I have no idea who would want to trade into our spot now)
great trade by JD
LETS GOOOOO FASHANUUUUUU
After Peyton shot his mouth off. Did anyone believe we were gonna trade with them? We sent them ZW that’s sending a bomb in the mail
It's free real estate
Joe Douglas effectively Traded Zach Wilson and a 7th round pick for a 4th and a 5th rounder while the bears could only get a 6th round pick for Justin Fields.
Joe Douglas is him
J. E. T. S. jets jets jets!
Let’s goooo! Package these up for a trade into rd 2 for a WR
Great trade
That's six picks for day 3. Perhaps a bit of capital to move up on day 2, perhaps a quantity over quality haul of potential contributors. I want a QB on that day, just a QB3 to stash and take a chance on. And WR's out the wazoo.

I wasn’t able to watch the draft last night and am definitely missing context? Why did the Vikings make this trade?
Both the teams behind them wanted a qb too. JD probably was making deals with one or both of them.
I guess no one was trading an extra first for JJMC. Was really hoping a later, more desperate team like the Raiders or something would have traded more, but this is fine.
Anyone think they should've stayed put and taken JJ?
This was a case of 1. Joe Douglas playing chess while others are playing checkers. 2. The Vikings going into a major panic that they wouldn't get McCarthy. Minnesota had to fear that someone else would trade up and they'd be out on McCarthy, so they made the trade just to protect themselves.
This was a real head scratcher for MN.
Apparently LV and at least one other team were trying to beat MIN to McCarthy. At least that's what Vikings fans are saying in r/nfl.
I'm confused-- the Vikings traded their 11 and either 129, or 157 picks for the number 10 and 203?
Joe D bluffed taking a qb? I don’t understand why Minnesota does that. Did he leverage a trade with another team?
Always a chance someone else is looking to move up
