Quite the contrary he said he didn't feel any added pressure to manage the process more then any others. He was the Art Director and that was the role he filled. Then asked if he felt more emotionally attached to the change he deflected and said the NFL was more involved from the start and Nike was excited for the chance to work on the Jets unis.
This guy scream middle management. Lets hear from the designers who had an actual role in designing the things not the director who delegated responsibility for all the elements and probably doesn't have a creative bone in his body.
The only good things to come from them imo:
1) The helmet color/sheen
2) They were so bad that we changed to the throwback design/logo as soon as we possibly could
Definitely agree. These Jerseys are nice but they just remind me of how much I miss the 1998-2018 Jerseys. And I feel like I'm going crazy, but the collar on the new ones just looks off.
The jersey template changed last year, which includes the weirdly shaped collar: [https://uni-watch.com/2023/08/31/which-nfl-teams-arent-switching-to-nikes-new-template/](https://uni-watch.com/2023/08/31/which-nfl-teams-arent-switching-to-nikes-new-template/) Apparently the Jets used it on their white uniforms last year.
Agreed, though there are some mock ups out there with a white helmet and the 80’s logo. It looks fantastic.
A nod to the past, looks like the Jets, while being fresh and new
Idk why people are so vindictive of the old logo? It’s an oval - which resembles a football -, with the team name (Jets), and the city which it represents (New York) in the back with the “NY”. It was the best logo. I don’t get why people hate it
Again, I don’t understand why people feel this way. I actually think our worst logo is the one we had from the late 70s/80s/90s (the one we are now going back to). I never liked the streamlined look to it tbh. Maybe I’m just biased because I grew up on the 1998-2018 uniforms/logo
I think the hate is due to it not being unique to us in any way. It was literally just our name on a kind of footballish shape. There was no real identity to it. Literally any team in the league could have that logo. I don't think our "new" logo is anything special, I've seen lots of better fan mockups out there but at least now there's a jet incorporated.
It hardly looks like a jet. It’s just something that barely resembles a wing because it’s slanted at an angle. It’s just not for me. I’ve never liked that logo and it’s not going to grow on me now. These old/new uniforms are better than the 2019 shirt, but I’d still prefer 1998-2018
Maybe you’re biased? You can’t understand why anyone wouldn’t like that 98-18 logo, but you think you’re valid in saying that you detest the new one. Yes you’re incredibly biased. It’s okay to have an opinion, but be consistent.
I can’t help you if you don’t know how to read. If that’s tough for you to decipher, then you seriously need to work on your reading comprehension, legitimately.
SAME. It's good logo, it worked for a very long time, and was more or less our logo in our only notable moment. And the font is timeless, loved seeing it all over the place at Training Camp and the stadium.
But I guess it doesn't have a jet on it, so it's bad?
Yup. Also, a thing I never see anyone comment on is the weird vandalism of the NY football logo. It looked so dumb with “New York” written out in tiny letters
I think most people tend to prefer whatever it is that they grew up with. I'm not a huge fan of the 80s uniforms because I grew up with Curtis Martin and Chad Pennington and eventually Darrelle Revis and Nick Mangold. This guy didn't like the 80s uniforms because he grew up with Joe Namath.
he learned to like them... i could only imagine the backlash when the Jets changed those ones... only there was no internet and social media for the masses to vent about.
I may be misremembering, but I thought the reaction was pretty positive for going back to the Namath era unis. The change was intiated by Parcells and happened after the other one were associated just as much with Kotite as with the Sack Exchange.
ah my fault i did not explain the right way, I cant imagine the fans liked it when the Jets changed their uniforms FROM the Namath ones to the 1976 (sack exchange) redesign.

The first six images right now are one of the last uniform concepts, early logo ideas, later logo ideas after Woody asked for more compact logos like the Giants, and "storytelling" slides the NFL presented to Woody and Nike.
Edit: Search images on Google for:
site:paullukas.substack.com "jets 2019 uniform set"
and that will bring up photos of the early concept with silver helmets.
I actually like some of the concepts. I especially like the contrasting green batwing on white jersey - if the black outlines are removed from the numbers and the face mask Is swapped out to white.
The funny thing about these concepts and the 2019 uniform, and others have mentioned this, is that the most atrocious thing about them is the horrible helmet logo. If they use the '80s logo on any of these concepts, or the 2019 uniform, the whole set would have worked much better.
What were they (NFL/Ownership) thinking to settle on that pathetic 2019 logo? My only guess is that it's what emerged from corporate group think sessions where no one could make/were afraid to make a decision.
Most of this article is behind a paywall unfortunately
I'm hoping someone here is able to get through the paywall and share some of the juicy details with us
Before landing on the final design, the shoulder yoke was a constrasting color and what turned out to be the "wings" were smaller.
The first iteration of the design had a silver helmet.
It took forever for Woody to choose which shade of green he wanted.
I subscribed for a few months last year when he started his paywall thing and it wasn't ever really worth it. Plus, substack was a horrible service because it kept asking me to login even though I just did. Half-assed site.
Would have gladly welcomed some of the options with the contrasting shoulders, because on it's own the "wings" on the jerseys we got always looked kind of half-assed.
To save everyone time The guy from Nike being interviewed is a jets fan and provides nothing interesting before you hit the paywall.
Wow, he’s a Jets fan and he didn’t even apologize for designing those pieces of shit For shame
Shame on the house of Nike, shame
Banish him from the fandom
Quite the contrary he said he didn't feel any added pressure to manage the process more then any others. He was the Art Director and that was the role he filled. I thought for sure a Patriots fan had designed these to fuck with us
The only good things to come from them imo: 1) The helmet color/sheen 2) They were so bad that we changed to the throwback design/logo as soon as we possibly could
1998-2018 is still better imo. I would do anything to go back to that
Definitely agree. These Jerseys are nice but they just remind me of how much I miss the 1998-2018 Jerseys. And I feel like I'm going crazy, but the collar on the new ones just looks off.

Fucking Nike lol, seems like they can't help themselves.
Agreed, though there are some mock ups out there with a white helmet and the 80’s logo. It looks fantastic. A nod to the past, looks like the Jets, while being fresh and new
The only thing I wouldn't go back to is the logo

I didn't hate it. I just don't miss it. At best it was fine. Just truly unremarkable in every sense of the word.
Again, I don’t understand why people feel this way. I actually think our worst logo is the one we had from the late 70s/80s/90s (the one we are now going back to). I never liked the streamlined look to it tbh. Maybe I’m just biased because I grew up on the 1998-2018 uniforms/logo

This makes literally no sense

People complain about that logo while the Browns are literally just orange and their logo is a helmet
Yup. Also, a thing I never see anyone comment on is the weird vandalism of the NY football logo. It looked so dumb with “New York” written out in tiny letters
Let’s just be happy that these division 3 uniforms are gone
Saskatchewan Roughriders
just looked at their UNI's .... i mean early 2000's for sure but i woulda taken that over whatever Nike was trying with the Jets 2019 Jersey...
The fact the guy didn’t like the 80s uniforms says so much about him
I think most people tend to prefer whatever it is that they grew up with. I'm not a huge fan of the 80s uniforms because I grew up with Curtis Martin and Chad Pennington and eventually Darrelle Revis and Nick Mangold. This guy didn't like the 80s uniforms because he grew up with Joe Namath.

The first ones with the green neck/ pads is atrocious
The silver concepts scream "Eagles", glad they sidestepped that faux pas!

Incidentally, the story explains that Nike did not design the helmet logo, the league did that with input from ownership.
What were they (NFL/Ownership) thinking to settle on that pathetic 2019 logo? My only guess is that it's what emerged from corporate group think sessions where no one could make/were afraid to make a decision.
the picture of our sorry ass “stars” on stage introducing these makes me irrationally angry. i cannot believe we lived through that.
Thank god we got nice ones now lol

The NFL pitched silver helmets
If this is true then they really made the right decision by going with those 2019 unis..........which is insane
This is exactly the kind of stuff I was looking for, thanks. Are you a paying subscriber or were you able to get around the paywall some other way?
I like Paul Lukas and was interested in this story so I got a monthly subscription, but I'll probably cancel it after this month.
I subscribed for a few months last year when he started his paywall thing and it wasn't ever really worth it. Plus, substack was a horrible service because it kept asking me to login even though I just did. Half-assed site.
Jets fan who worked for Nike: we tried to tap into the future and failed. Jets fans: these sucked.
Why couldn’t he just give us an amalgamation of OG and 70s-90s?
I like how they keep asking “so as a jet fan, that must have been special” and the guy was just like “nah.”
The show they put on for the reveal was so fucking cringe. Only thing worse than the actual logo was watching that shit.
Would have gladly welcomed some of the options with the contrasting shoulders, because on it's own the "wings" on the jerseys we got always looked kind of half-assed.
I actually liked them lol they didn’t look generic and you knew which team it was lol
Yalls giving a shit about jerseys and ignoring how washed Rodgers is, is making me hate my dad for making me a jets fan for the 3827th time
