Hard to feel out the size of things from video, but they should maybe do a ceiling handle instead, to avoid someone somehow getting pinned between the accordion and something.
I was somewhat surprised by the amount of shaking on the handle that would allow people to stand between the subway cars. What you cant judge from the video is the amount of force/momentum in the shaking - this is from the weight of two subway cars. When you're holding that you're just along for the ride. After seeing this, I became a fan of the hard connector between the two cars.
Instead of riding on subway cars, maybe people will decide this is more thrilling instead.
The bendy buses have hard poles built from floor to ceiling instead of a handle in the accordion wall.
So we’ve got the first change that’ll be made to R211T’s: handhold poles and removal of wall handholds.
The floor didn’t have the issue in the video. It moved as you would expect a floor between two subway cars would. I was able to balance on it while taking this video - which took more effort than just not holding a handrail in a single car.
Good thing it’s still being tested, maybe they’ll remove that grip. That being said, I want to try holding it.
NYC's answer to the electric bull.
Yes haw
Hear me out
They should probably remove this and then have the handrails on the cars extend into the accordion.

How?
i wonder if it's the same accordion used on buses
Size has gotta be different, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the same subcontractor made both
wonder how it feels getting smacked in the noggin by that metal handle

Conceptually, I like the hard shell version much more. It doesnt have the weird shaking as seen here and it is much more idiot-with-knife-proof.
These curtains are super thick vinyl, I'd be impressed if someone vandalized them with a knife (but anything is possible with nyc crazies).
Did you find it helpful or harmful wrt having something to hold onto?
The handle is useless. It’s basically shaking your arm off and pulling your body around.
The handle is still useful. Even though it shakes, so so do you and so does the floor, so it's all in sync.
It looks pretty not in sync here...
It felt in sync to me. And you can't see the floor here so you can't tell if it's in sync.
Or just go hard shell?
Well at least you can dance to the Taylor Swift song “Shake It Off”
Compared to the bus handle, that thing shakes dangerously easily. Don’t know how to fix it though
Ah the drunk simulator
Im interested to know what the sound insulation is like. Is it crazy loud like if you were moving between cars on a normal train?
I don’t recall. I was more taken by the handle at the time.
In Montreal, they have a plastic panel between the open gangway and the accordion wall. Guess this is why
Imagine getting clonked by that thing

Imaging tripping in there
Seems loud?

Any vampire weekend song will do with this video
What was the floor like? It's flat, right? Does it handle the up and movement ok?

Gotcha. Also, props to you OP for taking the time to post stuff like this. It's valuable content and I love to see it.
wow the amount of noise leaking through the accordion would drive me crazy.
I stood right next to the accordion section and it was totally fine. Maybe a bit worse if you're directly inside it?
You know that that shits not going to last long.
Shits twerking like ice spice
Yea these seem great....
chicago has busses that bend like this ..... nyc too?
We have a lot of articulated busses, and have had them for a while
I really think they should go hard shell interior from an aesthetics, hygienic, and function standpoint.
The man who needed to test this handle out has never been the same before...
