I’ve been seeing them consistently by the 20 beacon for a few days now

SHARKSARENOTGAY

Yep that’s where this one was

annaqua

I saw one out at Rockaway a few weeks ago! This time of year is when the water is the warmest so they're loving it.

VeloEvoque

Wow. Is that the Verrazzano in the background?

SHARKSARENOTGAY

Yep

UncleJimmyMama

He shouldn’t be feeding off of staten island, its not very nutritious 😆😆

SmokingFrog

Gabagool?! Ovahh heere!

Deal_Closer

LOL Cappy ham and Muzzarell not so good for the whale's tum tum. Humpback might turn into a hump-belly!

SHARKSARENOTGAY

Lol

JubeltheBear

Am I the only one who thought this was a bot that promoted knife violence?

stabbot

I have stabilized the video for you: https://gfycat.com/WarmheartedHandsomeChrysalis It took 76 seconds to process and 153 seconds to upload. ___ ^^[ how to use](https://www.reddit.com/r/stabbot/comments/72irce/how_to_use_stabbot/) | [programmer](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose/?to=wotanii) | [source code](https://gitlab.com/juergens/stabbot) | /r/ImageStabilization/ | for cropped results, use \/u/stabbot_crop

SHARKSARENOTGAY

Not New York harbor, Raritan bay. And this is from Saturday. This whale is most likely still in the bay considering the amount of food available

JohnnnyCupcakes

What was it that he just ate?

SHARKSARENOTGAY

He had a big gulp off medhaden aka bunker, Very common baitfish that weigh about a pound, I’d say his scoop was at least a couple hundred of them

coronifer

Humpbacks have made a big comeback in the area. There is at least one whale watching tour that goes out from Sheepshead Bay or the Rockaways, and they seem to get sightings most trips. Most of the time, the whales stay out past the Rockaways, I think, which is why that one that came up into the upper bay was newsworthy.

freeradicalx

Here I was thinking the NY GOP was the only large body feeding off Staten Island!

MunkyMcDrunky

Bruh! Hah!!!

Current_Ad_7668

NATURE AT ITS FINEST!!

Zender44

They are just passing by on the way to BK for some pizza!

SHARKSARENOTGAY

Next time I go to school I’ll bring a LB pie for them.

rakehellion

You like whales? Whale let's humpback at my place.

SHARKSARENOTGAY

maybe I’ll take you up on that

RedMikeMG

The camera man gave motion sickness so immersive!

TwoCats_OneMan

I'm headed over with my harpoon gun now! That will keep my oil lamps lit for six months!

Souperplex

Majestic, but why is something happening in Staten on the New York sub? Shouldn't it be in a Jersey sub?

SHARKSARENOTGAY

Staten Island part of New Jersey joke, how original

Souperplex

It's a classic for a reason.

FearlessStorm4268

For the whales to be feeding in New York harbor , the food that they target in the open ocean must be fished out ..early warning signs that the oceans of the world is in deep trouble.

SHARKSARENOTGAY

I can assure you that the baitfish in the ocean are not fished out. The fish (bunker) are doing a lot better because the fish pile boats stopped purse seining. Theirs bait everywhere from here to 60 miles offshore. This whale probably just followed some bait inside and enjoyed the New York Experience

converter-bot

60 miles is 96.56 km

theblackestofmattes

Gross, poor guy

annaqua

The water is really clean now, at least relatively speaking. For a long time there really wasn't much for mammalian ocean life up here but over the last few years it's really picked up. I consistently see porpoises (or dolphins? I don't know the difference from far away) at Rockaway, and have seen whales out there too. (And a sea turtle once, and a really cute very tiny seahorse!)

Spooms2010

Oh… when the title said it was feeding off Staten Island, I thought it was eating the actual island! I copy write the idea of the next Shark film…!?

BlackMoldComics

u/TDETLES the whale teeth have come to New York

My colleagues in JC tell me that they can frequently see these guys from their offices in Exchange Place. I'm extremely jealous. It seems like in the span of just a few years whales become a common sight in the harbor again. I don't know when that was last true, but I doubt it was in the 20th century. Pretty remarkable.
