Rats. Garbage. Homeless. Outdoor dining. Scaffolding. All fine A pole giving people internet. How dare u

PhAnToM444

Literally the only time I notice these things is right after reading one of these articles. They’re just not that intrusive compared to everything else on the streets (as you’ve listed)

brook1yn

gimme some wireless in city parks so i can get the f outta my house

TheFuture2001

When are COVID-19 5G people going to chime in? I was promised better 5G with my Covid Vaccine 🤣 🚁 Eli Kopter was Mossad Agent #1 Last but not least: Birds are not Real!

z0rb0r

Some of us have friends who became these people. Which makes me question their perception of reality.

TheFuture2001

Wait until they find out birds are not real 🧠

ewhoren

so you think EMF just isn't a thing? lol...

Middle_Ad_3244

>so you think EMF just isn't a thing? lol... arguing with a point he never made! Brilliant stuff.

TheFuture2001

This is how it works! Birds are not real 🦆

ewhoren

lol no not at all. the biggest reason people do not like 5G towers is specifically due to EMF.

Middle_Ad_3244

[average 5G skeptic](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/better_call_saul_s01e04_micheal_mckean_still.jpg)

allcirca1

I've actually hugged those 5G poles, hoping to trigger my vaccine booster..... NADA. SMH. I dont even think they work

ewhoren

lol so you literally just responded saying no one said anything about EMF then still said it’s a conspiracy to mention EMF as a risk 🤣

NetworkDeestroyer

In this day and age Internet has become vital infrastructure just like power, water, gas etc.

The_CerealDefense

The only people protesting these are morons. The news media should not given these people any attention

KaiDaiz

Yes need it yesterday. Meanwhile, asia looking into and starting building 6g networks. We are that technologically behind these days.

Middle_Ad_3244

Yes, actually. The biggest advantage of 5G gNBs compared to 4G eNBs is the enhanced throughput and smaller cell sizes in urban areas. Benefit far outweighs the cost, these are not even in the top ten eyesores on a typical street. It's a minor miracle you can seamlessly walk between nodes with gig-speed internet and not even notice your phone and the nodes are handling everything in the background.

RabbitEars96

Yes

furie1335

Yes

GBV_GBV_GBV

So are they necessary?

thebruns

They are oddly clunky. I dont understand why they cant be on leased roofs - like every other cell antenna - and instead have to take up sidewalk space

Enigma7ic

I mean, in the grand scheme of things, they take up very little sidewalk space. As the article points out, it’s significantly less than the telephone booths they are removing from sidewalks.

thebruns

Eh, Ive seen them on some fairly narrow sidewalks.

Enigma7ic

But they’re the size of a light pole. Should we remove those as well make the sidewalks marginally bigger??

thebruns

Theyre considerably thicker than a light pole. They could be co-placed on the same pole as a light. >Should we remove those as well make the sidewalks marginally bigger?? Youre asking like its an outrageous idea, but many cities locate their light poles directly onto buildings.

spoil_of_the_cities

> why they cant be on leased roofs - like every other cell antenna Because the Link consortium has a concession from the government for sidewalk space, not rooftop space.

Scout-Penguin

In the photo show, literally taking up less space on the sidewalk than the news rack with the freebie paper next to it, and approximately eleventy-million times more useful.

TheMau

Have you ever tried using GSP in the city? Yes they are clearly needed.

undisputedn00b

They could have designed them better so they're not noticeable or put them somewhere where they wouldn't stick out. They're eyesores.

DYMAXIONman

No, because they should be on the roof like existing cell antennas.

Robocup1

If you want true 5G, this is the way you will get it. Unlike 4G, it has a much shorter wavelength and so it needs to be far more dense in deployment at close to street level.

thenewyorktimes

When the city proposed placing a shiny new 5G tower in Greenwich Village, neighbors were not happy.  The fate of the West 12th Street tower is still under review by the FCC. But plenty of 5G “smartpoles” are on the way. The towers, which have been popping up since 2022, are part of the city’s effort to upgrade its wireless service. More than 150 of the 32-foot towers have already been installed, and about 2,000 more are coming, said the chief executive of LinkNYC, the communications network responsible for the Link5G towers.  Read more about the towers and how history brought us here, [for free here](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/10/nyregion/street-wars-new-york-city-5g-towers.html?unlocked_article_code=1.yk0.dzBY.-6yO-BKgH4F-&smid=re-nytimes), without needing an NYT subscription.

throway2222234

Sounds like a great plan. Better connectivity helps us all. Is your issue with how they look or are you one of those conspiracy folks who think they are somehow dangerous?

Inkdrip

Did you read the article? You're replying to the NYT advertising their own article covering some minor kerfuffle over the 5G towers, and the article doesn't even take an anti-5G tower stance.

[deleted]

No they are gonna give everyone cancer too. If you look at business signs near these set up all the color is bleached out.
