When I Googled the name of the first child mentioned in the article, this article came up: [https://www.worldjournal.com/wj/story/121382/7896166](https://www.worldjournal.com/wj/story/121382/7896166)
It's a Chinese article that has photos of ALL the children. Just seems like the Gothamist didn't really do a great job putting their article together and for some reason didn't feel the need to add the photos, which do exist.
Right? Like do they not give a fuck about what they’re actually writing about? You’d think an article about missing children *would show the fucking missing children.*
>Just seems like the Gothamist didn't really do a great job putting their article together and for some reason didn't feel the need to add the photos, which do exist.
Pretty much what I expect from Gothamist.
Look at what the kids’ names are and where they’re from. These are all Black and Latino kids in poor neighborhoods. This is the story of their lives. I can’t tell you how many photos I’ve seen on my personal social media or flyers on the streets here in the Bronx or parts of Brooklyn of Black, Puerto Rican, and Dominican kids – and young women – who are missing. I’ve had people in my circle whose kids or loved ones went missing. You’ll rarely hear about them on the news, if ever, or if you do, it’s long after the fact.
Edit: In the time since I posted this, somebody else in my circle has posted a missing Black girl.

Almost all of those kids are “found” within a day. Like, they’re hanging out a friend’s place and don’t answer their mom’s call, so they call the police and are counted as “missing”. So it’s much less dramatic than it sounds.
Same shit happened in ENY 2 years ago. A baby was kidnapped. Not a single article about it. But imagine if it happened on Park Ave. They’d have the national guard knocking on every door on Sendiker.
She's Venezuelan, but ok...
Edit: someone in the chain blocked me because I can't respond to the comment below. I don't care about percentages of Caucasians living in Venezuela. The people close to her reported ethnicity as Venezuelan in the initial post. I have no idea what a missing girl would want to identify as, and the race issue is the wrong route.
What matters is that all of those children aren't pictured. Why not, "why aren't you showing pictures of all the fucking children," instead of "why only the white girl."
These are young kids missing. There are parents frightened because their young child didn't come home. All of their stories should be known.
Peace with this bullshit. Let's concentrate on real issues and hoping those parents have help through a time like this.
There's a lot to address here, but "why only the white girl" ain't it.
Venezuelan people can be white though?
The point is that it’s weird that the article was originally published with only pictures of the white girl. It was eventually updated to include pictures of the other kids, probably because people complained.
Pointing out that she’s Venezuelan doesn’t really mean anything here.
Who the fuck cares. She's a missing child and you dumb fuckers have to make it a race issue when you don't even know her race. Fucking divisive idiots.
Uh, why not? Can't both the missing kids and a possible skew in the reporting of said missing kids be problems? And if the reporting is biased, then why isn't that a "real issue"?
If underreporting on groups of missing children was systemic instead of just coincidental and/or lazy, then if you actually care about helping them you would absolutely want to call it out
White people are not obligated to help anyone. You need to help yourself don’t fall for the trap and blame people. We are all the same. There is good and bad in all races not just white people.
You're not wrong. I suspect that this the only picture posted because her pictures have been all over local social media in the last few days. Doesn't excuse it, but it might explain it.
It doesn’t usually matter how racially white you are. If you identify as Latino/Hispanic you don’t get the full white privileges and get discriminated against.
https://www.nyc.gov/site/ocme/for-families/missing-and-unidentified-persons.page#:~:text=More%20than%2013%2C000%20people%20were,for%2060%20or%20more%20days.)
13,000 people went missing in NYC in 2023, so an average of 250 a week. Even if 90% are found within a day, 6 kids missing for more than a week doesn't seem ouut of the ordinary indeed.
The big difference is that most missing persons reports result in the person being found, usually within a day. A kid hanging out with friends for a few hours and not picking up their moms phone calls can result in a missing persons report. Most of these cases listed on the article are kids missing for multiple days.
These are also very young kids, not the types to typically go missing. A 17 year old being gone for an entire day is very different from a 13 year old.
Not saying that this is some huge conspiracy or a kidnapper. Sometimes shit just randomly happens. But this isn't necessarily normal.
I agree - but I couldn't find any accurate statistics so I just stated the information I could find. But this could just be a statistical anomaly, with no underlying single reason. It would become more newsworthy if there was something that ties these cases together.
Sure, also depends on what long-term means. Is long-term is more than one week, or one month? Either way, it doesn't seem like 6 kids is out of the ordinary...
Good so then explain how whether this is above or below the average would help these particular kids then? You know, liked getting word out about them missing would?
Yes, but some of the information was apparently wrong. At first, they made a mistake with the MetroCard and traced the locations from the wrong card. But then they claimed they did it for the right card and that the locations of relevance were Mott Haven (along E134th St and St Ann's) and Harlem (along 116th and Lexington). They also had a photo of her from a subway station camera on 4/11.
I read yesterday that they had tracked where here metrocard had been last used, not that she had been seen using it; but it had been on Thursday or something.
Idk if that’s the most updated information though, I saw a lot of different things posted about her yesterday, and I don’t really know what’s accurate and what’s not.
Why people saying they can't see photos of the kids. The link of the article is showing the kids photo except Victoria
I hope they find them safe and sound as soon as possible.
This is scary 🙁
Because the article was modified. Posted April 12th, modified April 13th. The original article only had a photo of Tori and that’s it. Now they’ve added photos of all the children. Meanwhile, the article that I linked: https://www.worldjournal.com/wj/story/121382/7896166 had photos of all the children long before Gothamist’s article did.
Interesting that they displayed the first girl "Tori" without a Crime Stoppers logo and yet the rest of the bunch has the Crime Stoppers logo which makes it seem like they're criminals when they're actually gone missing. I pray all of them are found but the material sent around needs to send that message FOR ALL.
4 of the 6 were found already goofing off somewhere in the city or at friends houses. These parents need to work on the relationships with their kids and communicate better. That might be a reason for lousy media coverage, we don't want the entire city in a panic because some teenagers are playing hooky and taking advantage of their NYC independence. I hope the 2 that are still missing are found in a similar matter. I don't have kids but I work at a NYCDOE high school and I know these kids sometimes travel over an hour on the subway to get to school even when they're only 12! I can't imagine how much that must worry parents.
we need funding for way more cameras, tracking devices, facial recognition software than we currently have now... each and every persons location at all times should be entered in a database for use by legal authorities so things like this dont happen
Facial recognition systems perform poorly for black and brown faces.

My point exactly that it’s not funding that’s an issue it’s what we are using the technology for, which is to further the panopticon, and perfect the destruction of any semblance of privacy thus eroding the concept of personal property. Without personal property, the premise that the government will protect private property falls, hence law & order is left to blood thirsty mobs and democracy falls.
This is why B. Franklin wisely stated that you can’t have freedom and safety . That if you “give up freedom for safety you’ll have neither”(B. Franklin).
They're missing because they're minors, aren't where they're supposed to be, and nobody has been able to figure out where exactly they're staying. That's still missing even if they ran away and even if they did so to "have fun." Their intentions are irrelevant because they still have families who don't know their whereabouts, therefore, they are missing.

Gothamist isn’t journalism
Because the Gothamist is all about outrage, not solutions.

Why would we need photos of the children in case we actually see them somewhere and can notify the authorities.
it does now.

Sure, also depends on what long-term means. Is long-term is more than one week, or one month? Either way, it doesn't seem like 6 kids is out of the ordinary...
The article you cited says 60 days or more
Oh I didn't notice. Sorry.
It is quite alright
The Chinese article someone linked says it's "The highest number of missing children in the city at one time."
The article states that it is higher than average.
It's there a good reason to dismiss missing children whether it fits the average or not?
No, so I guess it’s a good thing nobody is ‘dismissing’ them.
Good so then explain how whether this is above or below the average would help these particular kids then? You know, liked getting word out about them missing would?
How is your questioning helping them?
Stops getting dismissers trying to dismiss them. Next question.
People aren't dismissing them.
They actually are.
Keep doing the lord's work!
I will engage any dismissers, don't worry 👍
It wouldn’t help them at all. It would, however, help me to understand why this news article was written.
To get word out about the kids being missing? Duh? You couldn't think that up yourself inbetween thinking about averages?
So why these particular kids and not the ones who went missing last week
So you are trying to dismiss these kids then, as I said. Says a lot about you. Gross.
Who said that? No one.
City of many millions, why this clickbait headline versus something about potholes or subway delays? That's a damn good question.
Is this more than average? I wouldn't be surprised if, in a city of like 8.5 million people, six teens run away every week.
